I was hugely committed to dance as a sport, taking up to 15 hours a week out of my evenings and weekends. My commitment to the hobby brought me success when competing and performing. This dedication is also brought into my design work and I strive for success with every project; from the masterplan down to the smallest detail. Performing on stage brought great confidence when pitching to clients and giving presentation. As well, the discipline of the sport and the school I attended is something I still pride myself on; in particular discipline in my self-presentation and attendance.

I continue to maintain fitness by attending a gym and rock climbing (currently only indoor but wanting to branch out to outdoor); and I have a long list of new sports I would like to try.

PERSONAL DESIGN DIRECTION I believe that my role as an Interior Architect/Designer, is more than just creating beautiful spaces. The rising importance of sustainability, wellbeing and designing for the future, means that, as young designers, we need to be constantly educating ourselves on the ever changing issues of the world and implement solutions into our works. Here, we can use our creativity and platform to problem solve and propose new ideas. Adaptive reuse has always been an interest of mine, and with the current vogues of industrial spaces and character buildings, increasing the reuse of older buildings could be a way to combat some of the social and environmental issues that are seen today. The concept of designing in past buildings for the future of people, is something that drives my passion and I will continue to educate myself on this topic throughout my career. Something that I know is important in the sustainability of buildings, is having a good social wellbeing within the space. My University Final Major Project was based around design for wellbeing and, again, this is something I will continually make an effort to learn about and implement in projects I work on.

WA K A G A E R I : AN ARCHITECTURAL GESAMTKUNSTWERK UNIVERSIT Y FINAL MAJOR PROJECT

Wakagaeri: an Architectural Gesamtkunstwerk, is an explorative design study which challenges movement and provides a space where local artists can display work. The title literally means “Rejuvenation: A Total Work of Art”; the art of architecture, nature and movement combined. The unique concept for the project began with the lack of internet access at the site, Clumber Park, creating a space which acts as an escapism from everyday life. Conceptualising the notion of movement, the user is taken on a journey that goes against, perhaps, comfortable ergonomics, and is encouraged to consider their movement and environment more. The idea being that, like yoga and other forms of mental ‘escapism’, the user ends their journey feeling “rejuvenated” (English translation of ‘Wakagaeri’). The design is encouraged by research into Japanese architectural concepts and using them to manipulate people's movement and slow their journey. Japanese architecture is a current trend amongst designers but also with younger generations. An increase in social media has driven vogues of Asian design and people are beginning to implement this into their homes and workplaces. Ideas of social sustainability within Japanese design is something that, as designers, we should be researching more in order to enrich western architecture. Wakagaeri, aims to bring awareness to this. Wakagaeri brings recognition to local artists, provides a place for appreciation of art forms and subtly nods to the nature of the landscape (all things that the National Trust have done in the past). However, more importantly, Wakagaeri brings new ideas about how designers can create spaces for better wellbeing and drives the importance of taking time out of every-day lives to just be. We are beginning to see new spaces within cities that encompass these morals... so why not implement it in rural context, where research proves our mental wellbeing is better?
