1. Introduction: My Placement – context is half the work
An Artist Placement is where I will be able to develop my practical skills to a professional standard, alongside gaining experience of working in a professional environment. This project will provide me with experience I need to prepare myself to enter the working place and push me to develop my skills in order to produce work to a professional standard. Hopefully I will produce a piece to place into my portfolio as well as including a positive experience in my CV. Following the APG notion I wish to adapt my skills to a working environment, along with being given the opportunity to prove I am able to work to a brief with a fresh perspective. Allowing me to hold a position in a company where I will be required to make decisions and hold valued opinion from an artistic point of view. My placement is with NICOLA (New International Company of Live Arts) a charity run company supplying workshops for young people, providing young people the opportunity to be involved with creative arts. It is a non-profit organization and has ambitions to become an international company. My work for NICOLA will be as an artistic placement, only involving myself with the production of my brochure for the company, not with the operational aspects. My placement will be from a graphic design perspective parallel to making images from of a collection of NICOLA’s workshops, portraying a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. I will be working alongside a fellow student to produce a book/brochure documenting NICOLA’s artists, workshops, previous and upcoming productions with a brief description of the history of NICOLA. Although I will be working for NICOLA I will be working from home, but, will continue to have constant contact and be available for meetings to discuss my works progress

In order to gain a placement I was required to produce a Creative CV as well as a Cover Letter directing the targeted company to my key skills relating to the job requirements. My Cover Letter provides NICOLA with the knowledge of my enthusiasm to work with them, also allowing both my technical and personal skills to become evident. Details of my availability is also provided to offer the company security in the knowledge that I am keen to work for them.
3. Online Portfolio As well as providing written evidence of my skills within my CV I also provided access to my online portfolio, allowing a personal insight to my inspirations and previous photographic work.
page10 Placement Report
The photography is categorized with each attached to a brief description of the reasoning behind each collection. Considering the company will be unfamiliar with my work I felt it necessary to provide them with a clearer insight into the ways in which I work, as well as my passions.
A link is also provided at the bottom of each page in which to contact me through email.

For each category selected a screen appears providing thumbnails of the collection, along with a brief text relating to the collections context.

Once a thumbnails was clicked on it enlarged, offering an increasingly details view of the image. A tool bar is also available to scroll from ‘previous’ to ‘next’ through the collection, with the collections title evident above.

4. Project Outline
My aims for my project where as follows: ‘My Placement will starts on 18th March 2009 and finishes on 26th April 2009, in which I will be making a book/brochure for NICOLA to show the workshops they organise and the artists they use. I will be making the book using a combination of my own images together with a selection I have collected from NICOLA and the artists they use. I will be using Photoshop to design the books pages and InDesign to put the book together. I haven’t decided which publishing site I will be using as we may send the book in emails to download due to funding, although we will have copies made to take into schools etc. I will be attending a selection of NICOLA’s workshops to gain an understanding of the company and to take my own pictures. The majority of the work will be at home or using university facilities but there will be constant contact with NICOLA throughout, also I will be having meetings at least once a week to discuss progress.’ In reality, when starting my project I realized that the process of making the brochure and collecting images for it was extremely difficult. There seemed to be little/no organization from my supervisor, as well as when emailing designs for feedback I was replied by: ‘Michela Ferrara to me, katrina Show details Apr 19 Reply Hi Emma & Katrina, Sorry if I have not sent you the material yet, I am very busy with putting together the Sunday event, so until next week I can’t think about the brochure. Sorry ‘. I was aware that my supervisor was under alot of pressure due to the amount of placement students she had taken on, as Michela was in charge of us all, alone. Despite the lack of communication and feedback I created designs for the brochure but was unable to complete production. I was not provided with enough information and material to complete the brochure, and as my design received little feedback from Michela I was unable to push this process further.
page20 Placement Report
Although, when starting the placement I was told I would be taking photographs of the workshops as well as making the book, due to the amount of other students taking photographs, it seemed more logical to instead focus on the brochure. It was difficult to collect the images, and my designs hold ‘made up’ text as information from the company was not forwarded. Overall I was disappointed with my placement, when starting I was enthusiastic to be involved within a working environment, but it quickly became apparent that my ‘experience’ would be close to nonexistent. The blame is not entirely on my supervisor of the company, it was a combination of lack of communication and conflicting versions of each others working attitudes practices. I am aware my project is far from completion and, given the time, I would love to revisit the brochure and complete it with a greater understanding of NICOLA’S visions for it. I would also like to take my own photographs of the workshops, as this would eliminate some of the issues surrounding the gathering of material needed.

6. Photography from Ariel Dance Workshop
Although I wasn’t required to take any pictures for my placement, I attended an ariel dancing workshop one wednesday night, and took a few shots. There was only one student with the teacher present and lighting was extremely poor, it was beautiful to watch.
7. Web 2:0 Communication To communicate with other individuals also working with NICOLA I used Twitter, a social networking site, which provided me with easy access to see how other were progressing. Although I did use Twitter, I found using Facebook a much easier way of communication. I created a facebook group where pictures, links and designs could be communicated amongst colleges. Also instant messages were able to be sent allowing for quick answers to questions and meeting times arranged in seconds. Using Facebook provided an easy way of communication and simple applications in which to upload images, but referring to the group, it lacked character of the company. The only way of personalizing the page was to add a picture to the group, where as Twitter offers extended ways in which to do so. You can create your own Twitter page, including uploading an image as your background as well as editing the colour scheme to your choice. Allowing you to provide your profile with it own unique character, making it more attractive to visit.
