Mozaiko
A Brazilian platform to foster social entrepreneurship through co-research and co-creation
Mozaiko (www.mozaiko.cc) is a service to offer NGOs and corporations help to show them how to engage with people to create new social services and values. As the first phase of the development Voël, a Brazilian Design Thinking company, hired me to lead and develop the thinking processes behind Mozaiko and then carry out a prototype of the service in workshops with government, start-ups, NGOs and designers in three locations in Brazil: Belo Horizonte, Recife and Rio.
Mozaiko’s WHY, HOW and WHAT
Mozaiko’s co-research and co-creation process
Aware of my lack of understanding of the Brazilian context, at the start of the workshop I made all the participants aware that they were co-researchers and co-analysts, and that whoever was investigating a context would carry on and translate their insights into a social business idea. The process followed a collective exploring and synthesising approach to generate business ideas.
1. First exploration: People selected a context, listened to people’s daily routines to understand social problems that matter.
3. Second exploration: A question was formed from the insights, key values of a service and conceptual map generated.
2. First synthesis: Insights from the contextual stories were grouped and shared as ‘What ifs’ on the Wall of Possibilitie.s
4. Second synthesis: Every service or new ecosystem was visualised through a customer journey map and business model.

Being an educator
By learning through doing, and seeing the process as a prototype, the process changed in every workshop and improved in the moment from listening to the participants. During the workshops I shared this message with participants, and encouraged them to use the tools to help conversations with people and in their teams. The workshop led to identification of different business solutions that addressed the problems that matter to Brazilian people, which are shared below.
Belo Horizonte workshop in a cultural centre, exploring problems in the centre of the city
Problems: Use of public space, security, traffic, community isolation, lack of local cultural events and education.
Solutions: (a) Learning system to understand use of public space (b) Hygiene facilities for homeless people (c) Cultural events that connect with traffic problems, and bring local history to life (d) Skill sharing in public spaces.
Recife workshop in a shopping centre exploring cultural districts of the city
Problems: Lack of family time, education access, lack of security on transport, ‘flanelinha’ or informal jobs, isolation and becoming homeless.
Solutions: (a) Access to education on local transport, (b) Co-working model for families (c) Family culture events and (d) Community car sharing events.
Rio workshop in centrally located pub, exploring local street markets, a favela and the streets
Main contextual problems (a) Market: Good produce thrown away unused, sellers didn’t come together as a business community (b) Favelas: No infrastructure or utilities, lack of pride (c) Streets: Lack of social engagement from elderly people.
Solutions: (a) Develop a local market ecosystem to use waste products to grow business (b) Brand a favela so that people would be drawn to the area (c) Help carers to help older people to re-engage with their communities.

For this module students developed a brand for a new Czech Republic vineyard or cafe shop. As well as taking them through the key elements of a branding process, I worked alongside students to develop a clear vision and coherent thinking throughout their brand. Examples of their work can be found below.
Innovation Design
Being an educator
A module on innovating interfaces with first year Interactive Design students
This module entitled ‘Ways of Seeing’ asked students to pick a philosophy from a hat and apply the key principles to an interactive flash interface. The social process devised enabled students to share and develop an understanding of their selected philosophy.
The social teaching process
1. As a group, students brainstorm the hippy movement. Based on this activity, students created their own guidance to review their chosen philosophy.
2. Students read a number of books on their chosen philosophy and created their own brainstorm.
Examples of students’ work
3. Using their brainstorm students were placed into opposing philosophy groups, and asked to discuss and view images from the viewpoint of their chosen philosophy.
4. Students sketched out each others interfaces.
Publishing Design
A module on print and online publishing design with first year Interactive Design students Teaching approaches
1. Understanding the differences between ideas and concepts
Examples of students’ work
Being an educator
An introductory module to publishing design asked students to create material to launch an unknown artist that a music company had just signed. As well as teaching the technical skills of publishing during this module, I devised approaches to enable students to develop strong coherent designs and be open to feedback.
2. Students develop their own rules for how they would like feedback during design critiques
3. Gallery feedback activity
