ake a trip out to Hawkshead. Latterbarrow is a popular fell near the village with a large stone column at the summit, and this walk gives you inspiring views of a range of higher fells down Esthwaite Water and around Lake Windermere. Best to allow 2-3 hours for this, including rests. Find a map of the route on our website.

how to get there Catch bus 505 at 1042 from Ambleside and get off at the Tourist Information Centre in Hawkshead. Turn right onto Main Street and head towards the Post Office and start of the walk. When you get back, wander through the small lanes of Hawkshead - theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re charming - and stop at The Kings Arms Hotel on Flag Street for a light snack, if you fancy it. Complete your visit by popping into the Beatrix Potter Gallery, a 17th-century stone-built house dedicated to showcasing the original book illustrations of Beatrix Potter. Then catch the 1658 bus back to Ambleside. The timetable for route 505 is on pages 36-37

Levens Hall and garden

his lovely market town, called the Gateway to the Lakes, has a long main street with narrow lanes and yards leading off it, lined with all manner of interesting shops just beckoning to be discovered. There are lots of fine buildings and plenty to see and do to while away a few pleasant hours. If you want brilliant views over the town’s churches, chapels and rows of houses and you’ve got the energy, climb up to Kendal Castle – a short walk from the town centre. It’s now a picturesque ruin, but so worth exploring. Open daily, free entry. And don’t forget to try Kendal Mint Cake. Based on a traditional recipe, this delicious peppermint confection is well known to mountaineers but it’s great anytime.

ngland’s second largest lake, Ullswater, is stunningly beautiful. Take the bus to Glenridding for a leisurely boat ride to Howtown then walk back to Glenridding.

This famous scenic walk is an easy, low-level 7 miles, which should take you 3-4 hours. Stop off at Beckside Farm tea rooms along the way or at Glenridding, sit down and relax at the Inn on the Lake - it’s buy one get one free on hot drinks when you show your bus ticket at either café.

how to get there We suggest bus 508 at 0932 from Penrith Bus Station to Glenridding to connect with Ullswater Steamers at 1030*. For a shorter walk, catch the bus 508 at 1132 to Aira Force, an impressive 65ft drop waterfall, and afterwards have tea and cake at the tea room within the grounds. You could also board the 1505 Ullswater Steamer from Aira Force pier to Glenridding. Buses back to Penrith leave Glenridding at 25* past the hour Mon-Sat (last buses 1725 and 1828) - check page 40 for Sunday times.
