EMMANUEL CHIMERE EZE APPLICATION FOR MARCH ARCHITECTURE APPLICATION NO: 22185287 2018-2022 SELECTED WORKS

Bio To me, architecture is much more than just designing buildings; it is about expressing myself and solving a problem. My interest in architecture began when I was given a set of Lego building bricks. Whenever I played with them, I tried to construct structures of different kinds. I did this so often that I asked my father what profession would allow me to create structures like this one day, and he said architecture. I realised then that I wanted to be an architect. Learning is a lifetime process; I want to pursue a Master’s Degree in Architecture to enhance my architectural skills and prepare me to compete in the real world with my fellow architects. My ultimate goal as an architect is to solve problems in the world through my designs and design buildings that will make me remembered, like Hadid, Gehry, and other greats.

IYANA IYESI COMMUNITY CENTRE Mixed-Use Development Location - Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria Academic- Year 3 Semester 1 (2019)

Ota is a town in Ogun State, Nigeria, and has an estimated 164,000 residents living in or around it. Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area is headquartered in Ota. The traditional leader of Ota is the Olota of Ota, Oba Adeyemi AbdulKabir Obalanlege. Ota has the third-largest concentration of industries in Nigeria due to its proximity to Lagos. It also possesses a large market and an important road junction, found just north of the tollgate on the Lagos - Abeokuta Expressway. The Iyana Iyesi community centre is a mixed-used development, tailored to meet the present and future needs of the people of the Iyana Iyesi community. With a focus on people, place, and culture, this development creates an avenue for people empowerment, entertainment, and recreation.

TOPOGRAPHY

The site has several structures currently erected on it which through government intervention will be removed and relocated. Rubble and waste from the demolition will be recycled in the construction of this new development.

The site slopes gently downwards. Site drainage will be positioned to take advantage of this natural slope.

A closed-ended survey was performed to determine what the people wanted their community centre to represent. The majority of the population expressed they desired a community centre that would empower them. After that came leisure, recreation, and finally trading/business. According to the results analysis, the polls were relatively close, and not creating a community centre that includes empowerment, leisure, entertainment, and trading would not please a large number of people. As a result, I decided to combine all of these into a single structure.

ANCHOR This project aims to become a focal point that empowers the various industrial settlements located around the outskirts of Abuja. Like a ship’s anchor, this project aims to be a source of job security. The crude shape of anchor was refined to produce a tropical design with a courtyard which addresses issues like natural lighting and ventilation.

A framed structure system is used for its ease in construction and economical advantage. This will help to create interior spaces mainly within the production and warehouse zones that are easily adaptable to a new function in the future.

MESSRS TINBUL HEAD OFFICE Commercial Location - Lagos, Nigeria Academic- Year 3 Semester 2 (2020)

Lagos is Nigeria’s former capital and largest city with an estimated population of about 21 million people. Lagos State plays a pivotal role as Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre; it remains the focal point of economic activities of the nation. The Messrs Tinbul Head Office is to be the principal office for Messrs Tinbul International, an engineering and building construction company that specializes in the execution of major works in Lagos as well as real estate. The building houses five departments which include administrative, estate, financial, procurement and works.

The dominant soil type on the site is laterite. This connotes that the site can support structures of up to five floors with no additional support. However, beyond that some additional support may be required.

SITE CONCEPTUALIZATION

AREA

EXISTING CONDITIONS

TOPOGRAPHY

The site has an area of 222,500 m2.. This area is too large and hence only a portion of the site will be developed.

The site, mostly virgin, does have a few illegal roadside structures to be demolished. Reuse in construction will not be an option as these structures are made from derelict materials.

The site slopes very gently to the left. This will not be an issue and design techniques such as cut and fill will not be required.

WIND SPEED

TEMPERATURE

RAINFALL

From the climatic analysis, it was observed that the site temperature is hot for most parts of the year and has its highest rainfall in June. The problem of heat was resolved by introducing courtyards to facilitate natural ventilation. A high pitched roof with concrete overhangs was adopted to deal with excessive rainfall. Lastly, Trees were planted on the undeveloped portion of the site to act as wind breaks. weatherspark.com

UNITY Nothing displays unity like most arthropods of the animal kingdom. The bees, always working in unison to create and repair honeycombs. With this inspiration, the design looks to create an avenue where the flow of work is optimized with each department working in unison to achieve a common goal, organizational excellence.
