Annual Summit 2019
Highlights The Global Shapers Annual Summit 2019 was the largest summit to date with over 400 participants committing to action in three priority impact areas. The eighth Global Shapers Annual Summit was opened by Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum and the Founder of the Global Shapers Community. He welcomed participants from 380 hubs in more than 154 countries and territories around the world, alongside influential leaders, renowned experts and journalists. Under the theme ‘Leading for Impact,’ the summit convened more than 400 Global Shapers – including hub leaders and members of the Foundation Board, Advisory Council and Steering Committees – to debate and devise solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues. Participants engaged in workshops, plenaries and leadership exercises to share ideas, set ambitious goals and drive global action.
Participants outlined solutions to support the community’s three impact areas including: protecting the planet, shaping the future of education and employment, and standing up for equity and inclusion. Collectively, Shapers committed to the achievement of the following goals by 2021 (the Global Shapers Community’s ten-year anniversary): –– Mobilise 1 million people to influence policy on climate change and protect the environment –– Equip 100,000 people with digital skills and knowledge to thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution –– Train 100,000 people with knowledge and skills to drive action on diversity, equity and inclusion locally and globally “The power of the Global Shapers Community is its ability, as a diverse group of passionate young leaders from all walks of life, to come together to share ideas and drive collective action,” said Wadia Ait Hamza, Head of the Global Shapers Community. “With youth making up 50 percent of the world’s population, young people have a crucial role to play in decision-making, solution-building and effecting lasting-change in their communities and the world. That’s why this summit is so important.” This year’s summit has set the Global Shapers Community on track to amplify its impact worldwide. We would like to thank Klaus Schwab and the World Economic Forum, as well as our partners Ellyn Shook and Accenture, for enabling us to shine a spotlight on the power of young people to actively shape a more sustainable and inclusive future. Plenary: Leading for Impact
Plenary: Catalysing Multistakeholder Action
Wadia Ait Hamza, Head of the Global Shapers Community, introduced the summit’s theme and objectives, and challenged participants to explore ways to influence decision-making, solution-building and lasting change in their communities and the world through their important role as a curator.
Eiman Siddiqui (Austin Hub), Fatima Azzahra El Azzouzi (Casablanca Hub), Juan Jose Pocaterra (Caracus Hub), Olisana Mariner (Apia Hub) and Shem Opolot (Kampala Hub) joined Klaus Schwab for a dialogue on the current state of global affairs and how the next generation can lead for impact.

Plenary: Inclusion Starts with I
Plenary: Setting Ambitious Goals
Shapers are diverse in expertise, education, income and ethnicity – but are united by a common desire to inspire positive change. Shapers explored what it means to be a responsible leader and how to build an inclusive team culture capable of lasting impact with Accenture’s Chief Leadership and Human Resources Officer, Ellyn Shook.
Participants listened to the stories of two influential world leaders – Lindiwe Mazibuko, the former Parliamentary Leader for the opposition in South Africa’s Democratic Alliance and Børge Brende, President of the World Economic Forum and Norway’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs – who voiced the need for youth to run for office and engage in politics.

Plenary: Creating Lasting Change What will it take for today’s leaders to leave a positive legacy behind? Amornthep Sachamuneewongse (Bangkok Hub), Cecile Ney (Managua Hub) and Parvathi Santhosh-Kumar (Chicago Hub) joined Nicole Schwab and Klaus Schwab for a final discussion on how leaders can set the next generation up for success. What makes a great leader? For Klaus Schwab, the five key elements are heart, brain, muscle, nerve and soul. Shapers agreed and confirmed that a leader cannot achieve greatness without deep empathy towards others – this is the most important sentiment to fight against the injustices that persist in the world.

Experts from Accenture, The Climate Reality Project, Apolitical Academy, The National Geographic Society, The World Wildlife Fund for Nature, CNN Money Switzerland, Project Everyone, The International Labour Organisation, The Social Enterprise Institute and our own Advisory Council and Steering Committees helped equip Shapers with skills and tools to take back to their hubs.
Small group discussions around vulnerability, authenticity, belonging and other values important to Shapers, helped participants look inward and assess their own leadership journey and goals as curators. Robyn Seetal (Calgary Hub) and Frederico Rivas (San Salvador Hub) summarized these discussions in the graphic below. All leaders must practice empathy, honesty, courage, agility and accountability to move from intention to impact. These values with be presented at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2020 in Davos, Switzerland.

Impact Help us build a grassroots movement for change. Advance hub projects in our impact areas and work with the Steering Committees to achieve our goals. At the Global Shapers Annual Summit 2018, Curators selected three priority areas of impact: protecting the planet, shaping the future of education and employment, and standing up for equity and inclusion. In 2019, Curators went a step further, identifying sub-topics, solutions and projects scalable across hubs and setting ambitious goals to be achieved together by 2021.
Young people today are the first generation living with the significant effects of climate change and are possibly the last generation that can reverse course. At both the individual and hub level, Shapers are passionate about the environment and the urgent need to preserve our planet. With the right tools, training and political will, Shapers carry out sustainability projects to create a future where we can all thrive.
Access to quality learning and dignified work remains an utmost priority for young people, as evidenced by the Shapers Survey. Understandably, education and work vary by region and access is often delineated against factors including gender, class, income and ethnicity. To help drive equitable societies, Shapers advance digital literacy for all and help impart market-ready proficiencies to advance employment.
Young people today view diversity, equity and inclusion as crucial to improving the state of the world. Our differences enable us to effectively innovate as hubs and build strong leaders advancing human rights and equal opportunity for all. Shapers envision a world where young people drive community engagement, policy-making and systems change, and inspire collective action for a more equitable and inclusive future.
