THE SHORT CIRCUIT
A FOOD STRATEGY FOR THE AMP METROPOLIS Made with Maxime Richaud, Anne-Claire Chazelat, Guillaume Zentelin Julien Monfort Advisor Marseille, 2017
In the studies and the thoughts about territory and urban developpment, one aspect is generally forgotten : Food.
If, at the first sight, food seems to have no reason to be considered in urbanistic and metropolitan views, it is actually one of the most important dimension of territory plannning. Indeed, the way people eat has an important impact on the aspect of the territory. It affects landscape with agriculture, mobility with logistic chains and many other things. The Short-Circuit is a project which offers a way of developping metropolitan territory after food considerations. Today most of the food eaten in Aix-Marseille Metropolis come from abroad. As well as providing bad quality products, this system encourage the development of long road logistic chains, wich have a terrible effect on the Metropolis mobility network. It maintains pollution and traffic jams all along the highways and the roads of the Metropolis. In addiction to it, the monopoly of the road network on the mobility system and the import of foreign food encourage urban sprawl and the extinction of the Metropolis’ cultivated areas. The Paradox is that, despite this situation, local agriculture is in quite good health and produces more food that metropolitan population could eat, but for logistic reasons, farmers prefer sell all their products abroad. The Short-Circuit is a metropolitan railroad network wich becomes a gigantic pipe for local agriculture. Railroad become a way to promote urban density and preserving the terroir form urban sprawl. Therefore cultivated areas become a central operator of the Metropolitan development in being guarantor of the nutrition and the identity of the territory.

the system remains for sure in the logistic domain.
The TERROIR is one of the main objects of the metropolitan identity. It provides food and cultural coherence.
The AGRIHUBS are the first step of the short-circuit, where farmers make their products.
The METROPOLITAN RAILROAD is the garantee of the metropolis balance. It promotes urban density and delivery of local food.
THE SHORT CIRCUIT METROPOLITAN PART On the metropolitan scale, the Short-Circuit is composed of plenty of agrihubs, where farmers can drop off their products wich are going to be sell in the Metropolis. The freight-tram-train, the new metropolitan logistic system become a new metropolitan public transport wich links all the Metropolis cities.

THE SHORT CIRCUIT URBAN PART
At the urban scale, the ShortCircuit is a way to introcude local products in the cities by the positionning of urban logistic hotels called synapses. ROTONDE
All this places become strategical points of the city where everybody can find a farmer market brought by the freighttram, and can go anywhere in the metropolis by the same transportation. The Wholesale market of Marseille (MIN) is a central point of the system in becoming an agrihub, a synapse and the biggest farmer market of France.
THE SHORT CIRCUIT
URBAN PART
Insert logistic into urban centers is not an easy thing to do, because of the cost of plots and the nature of the activity. Synapses are therefore conceived in taking care of it. They became programmatic condensers where farmers markets and goods delivery are mixed with major equipments.

A METROPOLITAN FOOD MARKET Made with Maxime Richaud, Julien Monfort Advisor Marseille, 2017
Marseille’s wholesale market located in the North districts of the
city, is currently a logistic centre totally closed by impassable boundaries. It has lost the popular facet that it had in the past when it was located at the centre of the city. The short-circuit in redefining its role in the metropolitan food system, is the occasion to re-evaluate its position in the urban context. Our project break down the barriers and transform the wholesale market in a piece of the city with the birth of diverse programs all around the biggest farmer market of the metropolis. The shape of the project come from the meeting of two main parameters. The hierarchy of logistic flows and the need of thinking about a possible evolution, because of the logistic and the urban instability.

WALKING ON THE HIGHWAY SPORT EQUIPMENTS ACROSS THE HIGHWAY Made with Maxime Richaud, José Moralès Advisor Marseille, 2015
Marseilles suffers a lack of sport equipments. Its election as sport
capital in 2017, make the city reflecting about building new sport equipments particulary in the north of the city. North of Marseilles is a web of urban highways connecting the city to the rest of the metropolis. If this network create links on a metropolitain scale, it results in a multitude of faults in the urban fabric. The project use the contradiction between the qualities of roads on urban and metropolitain scales to considerate problems on the two domains : Making metropolitain equipments on a metropolitain line allows to solve local problems at the same time.

The first step of the project consists in two major equipments made for practising sport for metropolitan people, and cross the Jean-Paul Sartre Boulevard (urban Highway) for inhabitants. This situations represent an opportunity for the reunification of Montolivet and Malpassé districts, today separated by this road.

Linked to the city by the current metro and to the metropolis
by the Highway, Malpassé pool become the first public olympic swimming pool of Marseille. As well as it, its roof, is a part of an urban link between the close districts wich also includes the improvement of the Malpassé metro station. Buried under an urban park, the pool is divided into two parts. An olympic area, next to a familial pool, and some thermal baths in the other wing of the building. The courtyard at the center of the plot give also access to the roof, wich link Montoliver Street to Malpassé. Under the Highway, the current car park, and metro station are improved, by removing the vehicles and adding some local sport equipements. The Bottom of the highway become a real part of the link between the two districts and a major place for social link.

URBAN STAPLES
PUBLIC SPACES ALONG LA CADIERE Made with Maxime Richaud, Jean-Charles Franceschi Advisor Marseille, 2014
Marignane like many of provençal cities has began to neglect his
river from the arrival of running water. Hidden in a continuum of separate houses and housing estates, the water is now almost invisible and inaccessible. Walls, private gardens and houses prevent people to access «La Cadière», the historical river of the town. Indeed, in the 1960s, the city stretched out very quickly in becoming a commuter town of Marseille and Aix en Provence. From an old medieval town surrounded by fields, Marignane changed in fifteen years into a generic suburb, full of cars, without any public space. Walls and fences are the landscape of the man visiting the town. In the project, the river became a way to break down the barriers and give plenty of social spaces to the inhabitants of the city. The banks of La Cadière become a walk wich allows people to move inside the city and children to play near the water. The Urban Fasteners, long public spaces across urban fabrics stand perpendiculary to the river and break the barriers between the different districts of the town. They give an access to the river and at the same time become important places of the city, full of public spaces and equipements.
UNDER THE GROUND
A CULTURAL CENTER AT THE TOWER OF LONDON London, 2014
Today a large public space, the square in front of the tower of London would receive a new program in becoming a cultural center.
In my sense, the most important is to preserve this nice place wich allows people to admire the castle. My cultural center slot therefore under the ground and then, lift four angles of the place to give access to its different programs.

MORLAND
VERTICAL CITY ABOVE LA SEINE, Made with Maxime Richaud, Julien Monfort Advisor Marseille, 2015
With the transfer of Paris’ Prefecture, the future of Morland Hall become a difficult question for the city. With its 36 000 sqm, this building represents a true piece of urban fabric. Built in the early 1960s during an administrative reorganisation of the region, It represents an important part of the history. One of the other reasons of its great value is that, new rules forbid today to build a such high building in this area. It was therefore one of the project sites in «Réinventer Paris» contest.
The importance of this building and its symbolic value make us think, it could have a great metropolitan signifiance. Therefore, Morland hall is separated in two distinct entities. The ground part wich is dedicated to local signifiance programs, and the upper level wich is dedicated to metropolitan uses. The ground part hosts many services and programs linked to student life, because of the close Jussieu University. The tower is more turned to enjoyment with sports complexes, restaurants, nightclubs.
