1. Introduction The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) claims the position of being the largest residential higher education institution in South Africa, offering more than 400 career options, and catering to more than 60 000 students annually. The vision of the university is to be a people’s university that makes knowledge work through its visibility in five South African provinces. The university provides high-quality education to many young people in South Africa. TUT has seven faculties. Among them is the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE). The faculty’s focus is on active learning and creating significant learning experiences in and out of the classroom, ensuring that future-ready graduates are prepared. The Department of Architecture and Industrial Design (Arch+ID) is one of nine departments in the FEBE which strive to fulfil this mandate. The existence and growth of the department, since its founding in 1970, is a proof of its resilience and pioneering spirit in the context of a university of technology. Against all odds, the department obtained its first accreditation in the early 2000s, gained disciplinary visibility through winning student design competitions, obtained a reputation for producing work-ready graduates, and is now crafting its identity by naturing socially responsible design leaders in politically and environmentally sustainable technologies. This report contains a self-evaluation of the TUT Arch+ID for the reporting period, 2017 to 2021, presented in the following parts: • • • • •

Part A- provides an overview self-evaluation of the department. Part B-provides a detailed self-evaluation of the department. Part C-contains the portfolio of evidence of both the undergraduate (BArch + BArch Ext) and postgraduate (MArch + MArchTech) programmes offered by the department. Message from the Dean The department of Architecture is going through a leadership transition at the moment, this is a result of the sudden resignation of Prof J Laubscher as HOD in April of 2022. Prof Laubscher’s term was due to end by the end of August 2022. In order to ensure stability within the department, The Executive Dean of the Faculty took the leadership responsibility of the department with the assistance of Dr Nkambule, who is leading the accreditation project for the department. Issues of transformation have been at the centre of discussion lately in the department, however as a faculty, we have been transforming the department in terms of staff composition and the academic project as per the TUT transformation framework (see appx. B2.3). The framework outlines TUT’s commitment to transformation and steps which are taken to ensure that the transformation agenda is practically implemented. It is therefore important to note that since the last SACAP accreditation, the department and the faculty has progressed significantly as evident on the department’s profile. In terms of the department’s profile, there is a position of the HOD and the one of a section head currently vacant. The section head position was approved at the end of last year hence we haven’t filled the position as yet, in moving forward we will fill both the HOD and the Section Head positions to ensure succession planning. The deanery understands the need to build future leaders hence the implementation of the succession plan and steps to address the matter. The approval of the section head position is a step in the right direction to ensure the stability of the department in case the HOD resigns from the position. Recently, we have lost one of our staff members Dr Melchior Jacobus Stander, his passing has left both staff and students devastated, his contribution towards the successful running of the foundation program is appreciated. He will surely be missed and may his soul rest in peace.

Foreword Various permanent staff members wrote this report to reflect the diversity of the department. The data was simplified using several tables intended for interpretation and provision of background. Visual illustrations in relation to the written text were also used to provide a context, discuss and clarify certain matters about the Architectural Learning Site (ALS) and its way of doing things.

2. Setting 2.1. Intellectual position Imagining The Department of Architecture and Industrial Design at TUT1 The Department of Architecture and Industrial Design (Arch+ID) at the Tshwane University of Technology is a school of architecture at the margins. Historically, the university was part of the old technikons system, designed to transfer practical competence from skilled practitioners and craftspeople to students and apprentices. The technikon was transformed into a university of technology during the national restructuring of South African universities in the early 2000s. This transformation set in motion a gradual and continued increase in emphasis on the balance between technical competence and critical reflection. The university originally offered diplomas and BTech degrees and today offers BArch and MArch degrees, as well as a Doctor of Architecture degree. Arch+ID is perceived as at the margins of the city, its province and intellectual knowledge. This perception persists at the periphery of the minds of many. Furthermore, we embrace this perception. The school is at the coalface of transformation. Therefore, Arch+ID is uniquely positioned to reveal new sources of relevance in architectural and technological discourse. The gaze from the fringes offers fresh new ways of seeing and space for growth and relevance in the broader social context. The school’s six special features interact to give it a unique offering and identity, namely model and make, the foundation programme, the urban and social contract, technology as design philosophy, work-integrated learning and the Anthropocene. Model and Make In 2018, the school explicitly introduced the model-and-make teaching approach as an integral part of studio-based teaching after setting up the department’s MakerSpace facility. This ethos was carried further through the subsequent merger with the Department of Industrial Design in 2019. ‘Model and make’ explores the designer’s will to create, make, experiment, and then ‘theorise’ or reflect. Created objects, spaces and places are perceived to contain the embedded knowledge available to the creator. Students are given materials such as concrete, plywood and drywall, among other building materials. The materials are often sourced through industry liaison and sponsored partnerships. Design briefs are developed to help challenge and guide students to configure and/or reconfigure, assemble and/or disassemble, arrange and/or scatter these materials resulting in meaningful artefacts. Then the artefacts are usually donated to selected communities for everyday use. Prototyping is at the core of this experimental design-teaching approach, and therefore students are taught fundamental construction techniques. In addition, all first-year students are required to complete a one-week building-skill course, including bricklaying, tiling and carpentry, among others. The Foundation Programme The foundation programme is formulated as a bridging course to move students from a non-architectural background into architectural studies. The curriculum designed to achieve this is based on the concept of universal languages (lingua franca). Every discipline and vocational area has its own language that acts as the common currency for acceptance and entry into that specific field. For students to be successful in their chosen field, it is important that they are fluent and adept at that particular language. Drawing is the universal language of the arts, design and architecture communities. Many students in the foundation course come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Through the programme, the students are given the skills to express themselves through drawing from the onset of their studies. In turn, this fluency in the language of drawing grants them immediate access to perform well in the mainstream course. The techniques employed here are centred between two core poles, drawing well and drawing fast. The range of possibilities between those poles generates a voice for them, which otherwise would have been lost. Lecturers and classmates generally experience graduates of the foundation as fluent in ‘design speak’ as they can easily convey ideas and concepts without using superfluous language or slow, time-consuming computer imagery. Graduates of the programme have a demonstrably improved ability to comprehend scale and texture depth. Students can then develop a basic design language for themselves through emplacement, exploration and self-discovery. In turn, this leads to confidence, uniqueness of approach and a solid grounding in basic design principles.

The Urban and Social Contract The master’s programme in design takes place in the MArch studios. The programme intensively considers the physical and social context within which the design is proposed. Contextual informants include theories from the Global South, urban planning, urban and rural character themes, informality and suburbia. Urban, multi-storey complexity, inner-city development and density are key aspects of the programme. Accessibility, transformation, ‘incrementality’, adaptive reuse and social housing are further themes of investigation. Students are exposed to the urban realities of cities. Through others’ lived experiences, we can better understand cities and our service to the public. The master’s programme in design encourages on-site work, walking the city, documenting, narrating and critically analysing the physical and social conditions of place. Importantly, the background, approach, ethos, ideology and worldview of individual students are sensitively taken into consideration in the teaching environment. Inclusivity and integration of the diversity of the student cohort in the studio are part of the urban and social contract.

Technology as Design Philosophy The Architectural Technology programme is a design-research field adjacent to the MArch studios. This programme offers an optional career path that runs from the fourth year to the sixth year. In this programme, the simulations common to architectural education (client, site, building, budget) are adapted to allow peripheral practices and possibilities to be explored in more depth. Here the scale can vary from the conventional architectural scale to the abstract and microscopic world of material properties and thermal forces. In the undergraduate programme, real world, built projects and industry engagement form the backbone of the curriculum. In the postgraduate programme, mechanics, materials, details, manufacturing, management and experimental research are foregrounded with the aim of producing Candidate Architects who are entrepreneurial, dynamic, specialised, passionate and critical.

Work Integrated Learning A unique feature of the school is the integration of real-world architectural practice into the curriculum. The BArch2 consists of a six-month tuition component and a six-month working component. The institution actively recruits practices for apprenticeship-based learning and assists with pairing students with practices. This work-integrated learning approach ensures that students receive a good grounding in real-world projects and the workings of architectural offices. Students who return to the third year of study have often improved competencies and certainly have an improved sense of the day-to-day activities of architects. In addition, the programme facilitates networking and helps students understand the employment landscape for which they are being prepared during the undergraduate programme. The Anthropocene The Building Physics and Systems Design stream of modules has been introduced from the first to fourth year to help students grapple with the biggest challenges we are currently facing as a society and as a planet. Topics ranging from material innovation to energy efficiency are embedded as design tools in the programme to ensure that the study of the Anthropocene is central to the solutions developed for global environmental, economic and social crises. Centering At ARCH+ID, we empower students to make meaningful contributions to the profession through skills and technology transfer, teaching and instruction. However, through critical reflection, we also aim to produce graduates who serve the profession and have the confidence to hold the profession accountable to the public they serve. There are no edges in the world since we know that practically all architecture happens in the thin sliver between the biosphere and the stratosphere. Every place is a centre to someone, and so the opportunity exists to claim from the periphery the centre’s status as a place where knowledge is legitimised.1

2.2. Programme Design The BArch programme is aligned with Architectural Professions Act 2000 (Act 44 of 2000) towards the registration category of a Candidate Senior Architectural Technologist with a specialisation in design or architectural technology. In the second year of the BArch programme, work-integrated learning is used to expose students to the realities of professional practice. The programme later presents the theoretical components of design, construction, theory and history, building physics and systems design, computer applications, and professional practice modules (inductive teaching). The MArch programme emphasises the theoretical underpinning, urban design and context towards appropriate architectural design-led methodologies. The MArchTech programme introduces students to design-led research methodologies focusing on architectural technology (construction materials and methods). The MArch and MArchTech programmes align with SACAP competencies for the professional registration category of Candidate Architect.

2.3. Teaching and Learning The Arch+ID delivers teaching and learning in various forms: design-based, science-based, expression-based, humanities, work-based and professional-practice modules. This multi-mode teaching and learning is student-centred and delivered mainly through outcomes-based education (OBE), aligning with SACAP’s competencies at different learning stages. From 2020, the blended-learning approach increased due to Covid-19, mixing face-to-face and online teaching and studio-based mentoring, individual and group assignments, self-study, and work-based learning. The department is experimenting with making, working and travelling as pedagogies.

2.4. Assessment The department mainly uses two continuous evaluation methods: formative and summative. Studio-based teaching is used for architectural design, construction and architectural presentation modules (portfolio-based), employing formative evaluation as part of the learning process. These evaluations are achieved through weekly studio contact sessions (three-hour sessions offered three times a week for design), where students receive one-on-one and group critiques from staff and peers. Like formative evaluation, summative evaluation is used in all portfolio-based modules in mid-year and end-of-year exams. The remaining modules use mainly traditional assessment methods in the form of written tests, exams and assignments, as well as oral tests, exams and presented assignments.

2.5. Transformation Initiatives It is difficult to expect Black students to enroll in the department’s programmes if they do not see Black academics in role model positions. Four new White staff and only one African woman permanent staff member were added to the department since its 2017 SACAP Validation. One White staff member was replaced by a new Black staff member in 2020, resulting in only four Africans and six Black staff (Indians and Coloureds included). The number of Black part-time staff and external examiners and moderators has grown in the past five years.

2.6. Staff The department consists of 14 full-time academic staff members registered with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP). There are two professors, two senior lecturers and ten holding lecturer positions. The staff brings academic, research and practice experience into the studio and classroom. Part-time specialists are appointed for modules requiring expertise not held by full-time staff. Lately, to recruit younger future academics, the department appointed less experienced part-time staff, who are either working for a practice or furthering their studies. Registered students in senior years are also appointed as tutors of junior years as another form of learning and of recruiting future academics. Student assistants and tutors are appointed annually to assist the support staff with administration and technical tasks. Some support staff are appointed for a second or third term, providing the necessary continuity.

2.7. Students Between 2017 and 2021, the number of Black students admitted into the department’s programmes grew by more than 25%. There are 156 Black students (Indian and Coloured included) among the 400 students. The diversity of the student body is a changing student profile, attracting students of all races from the previous Bantustans, rural areas and small towns. This increase in Black students gives the department an advantage when anticipating emerging and underappreciated niches for the architectural profession. Between 2017 and 2021, the Department of Architecture and Industrial Design was the only department that has recorded an increase in success rate (degree completion) compared to other departments in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE). In all five years, the success rate stayed above 80%.

2.8. Research and Practice Since 2019, the newly introduced Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) Policy on the Evaluation of Creative Outputs and Innovations has revived interest in integrating architectural practice and research work by staff. However, the school has not yet reaped results from this opportunity despite appointing Dr Henri Comrie as a research fellow in anticipation of submitting creative outputs from his practice work. Developments to improve creative outputs are underway. In BArch2’s work-integrated learning (WIL), the students visit practitioners at their workstations, helping the school maintain continued contact with practitioners. Moreover, the school is involved in various engagements with professional architects, as part-time and guest lecturers, examiners and moderators, and through voluntary bodies such as the Pretoria Institute of Architects and the South African Institute of Architects.

2.9. Community Engagement Social responsibility is one of the values of the department. The department integrates teaching activities with community engagement through its MakerSpace design projects, especially in design modules. Not all the study years actively link design module projects with community projects. However, the BArch4 (Design) and BArch (Technology) years are the best examples. Community projects are also extended by integrating them with research projects. The best example of this integration is the National Research Fund (NRF) funded Betrams community research project.

3. Operational Matters Institutional frameworks on the day to day running of Arch+ID are provided in the following TUT policies which guide decision-making and motivation when deviation is necessary: claims - loss or damage; accepted invoices; access control of enterprise resource planning system; acquisition of information resources; access to external libraries; administration fees for refer to drawer; allocation of parking spaces; annual adjustment of student fees; appointment of invigilators for examinations and other assessments; audio-visual equipment; budgeting; cashier deficits and surpluses; circulation of information resources; cleaning services; collection development and management; computer equipment purchases and replacement; computer related technology intervention; contracting of operational leases, rental of office equipment; credit cards-advances and buying card; creditors-account payable and account payable COD payments; data backup and server management; disciplinary code and procedure; employee training and development; grievance; institutional repository; and many other related policies (see appx. B2) for some of the policy documents.

3.1.Strategies It has been a tradition of the Arch+ID to strengthen social ties and promote team building by having staff lunches every Monday, hosted by permanent staff. A collective approach to decision-making, problem solving, and the running of the department is made possible by this existing social capital. Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive, which are linked to Microsoft Outlook are used to facilitate communication of information, collaboration on given administrative tasks, and the organisation of data. Assigned Year Coordinators play a key role in handling administrative and relational matters affecting teaching, learning, and assessment. They also pick up on some of the administrative work required from part-time lecturers. Various staff members represent the department in University and Faculty committees to ensure the flow of communication and resolving of matters. For example, administrative and academic matters related to post-graduate studies and research are handled by the Departmental Research Committee, with its members serving in faculty research committees. Student representatives are invited to biweekly staff meetings, so they have a platform to raise issues affecting their learning, assessment, and wellbeing.

3.2.Administration There are two administrative staff members who are assisted by students appointed on a yearly basis. They handle a range of administrative and financial matters from reception desk enquiries, telephonic and email enquiries, applications, registrations, announcements, appointments, reports, appointment of part-time lecturers, examiners, and various related tasks. Their work lightens the additional administrative burden on academic staff, who only handle all administration work closely tied to their day to day teaching, assessment, research, community work, and respective portfolios.

4. External Funding External funding for the department in the period, 2017-2021, was mainly for research activities and was mainly sourced from the National Research Fund (NRF), the Newton Fund (University of Bath), and the Embassy of Italy in South Africa. In the period, 2019-2021, the Etex Group South Africa funded community projects which form part of teaching and learning. 4 3. Executive Summary

The South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) was invited by the Head of Department (HoD) of Architecture to assess the quality and relevance of the architectural qualifications leading to candidacy and eventual professional registration and practice. This followed from the HoD’s involvement with associated Heads of Schools Meetings in South Africa. This report was prepared by a Visiting Board (VB) representing the SACAP. The process involved inspection of the facilities, evaluation of subject contents and assignments, and interviews with staff, students and external examiners, as well as a review of the Architectural Learning Site (ALS)’s contribution to architectural education.

3.1 Recommendations

3.1.1 Studio Contact Time The Department should consider increasing staff/student contact time for design subjects. 3.1.2 Student Feedback Mechanisms The Department should explore alternative channels to communicate and receive feedback from students other than ESB.

Additional design studio sessions were introduced for all years from 1 Sept. 2017. Design is now presented for 3 days per week for 3 hours per day.

3.1.4 Identity of the Department A clearly articulated identity of the ALS was not apparent to the visiting Board. The ALS should give due consideration to expression of the unique traits and characteristics that define the identity of the ALS during the period prior to the next Validation visit.

3.1.5 External Examiners The Department should seek to diversify the pool of external examiners in terms of geographical location, race and gender.

In an effort to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds the department does the following: lecturers contact students if absent for a longer time without any formal reason; struggling students are referred to TUT’s Student Development and Support (SDS); some lecturers, in their personal capacity, sponsor students with printing and model making materials costs (this can be formalised to support financially struggling students) ; and TUT Postgraduate scholarships are made available, prioritising South Africans

Reflection on ALS identity: Our department prides itself on its practice-focus (design, develop, model and make) and in a University of Technology this is something to be supported and a heritage to be celebrated. The will to embrace research is another matter. Changing the culture of the department is a multi-year endeavour. This initiative is titled “THE PHILOSOPHY OF TECHNOLOGY” as a means to combine both the heritage aspects (technology/practice) as well as the future vision (research/ writing/reflective practice).

The TUT Architecture Departmental Research and Innovation Committee (A_ DRIC) constitution was established and is responsible for providing leadership in relation to strategic decision-making and management of research, innovation and research training at the Department of Architecture, Tshwane University of Technology. The A_DRIC manages all post-graduate degrees produced at the department, and therefore also functions as a Departmental Post-Graduate Studies Committee.

9.1 Documentation, Digital Presentation and Exhibition of Works Documentation The work of the Validation Board was disrupted and delayed somewhat due to the incompleteness of the validation document delivered prior to the visit and the subsequent issue of additional documentation and revisions to the Board only on the first day of the visit. To prepare for the next validation, the Board advises the ALS to prepare the necessary documentation timeously and to thoroughly check the documentation before it is couriered to the Board.

The Board similarly felt that the Department should articulate a vision statement that clearly commits the institution to a direction that every staff member is aware of and which could help promote TUT as a university of preference for students who want to study architecture.

The Visiting Board is concerned that the last staff ‘bosberaad’ was in 2012 and that the many changes in staffing since then may have resulted in some loss of vision. The Visiting Board is therefore of the opinion that another staff ‘bosberaad’ might assist the staff to bring them closer and work in unison as the TUT Department clearly services a niche market.

The Visiting Board was not entirely satisfied with the response by the Department of Architecture at TUT to the 2012 visit. The Department appears to have viewed the recommendations of the Visiting Board as mere comments and not requirements and consequently did not fully implement all of them. These requirements remain areas of concern to this Board and require follow-on review by the next Validation Board.

15. Commentary

15.1 Interview with Management. The Validation Board met with TUT Dean of Faculty Engineering and Built Environment, Prof Barend van Wyk. He said the university regards architecture as a flagship program and they offer continued support to the department.

The Department undertook to address these matters with the utmost urgency. Implementation of some of the requirements have already begun since 1 Sept. 2017.

15.2 Comments on Interviews with External Examiners The external examiners who were present said the standard of education in the department is satisfactory. They said the work of the students ranges from acceptable to exceptional and were impressed with the following: The Foundation Year. The lack of academic rigour amongst students.

Assignments: when researching for writing and preparing assignments, for all modules, students are required to reference using the TUT Referencing Guidelines; this is enforced by including referencing as part of the marking rubric. Theory and History of Architecture modules: the frame of reference for students is expanded through these modules; students are encouraged to cultivate a culture of reading by including using books in the ReadingLab when preparing for assignments; what is still under development is increasing the academic rigour through correctly referenced essays, improving writing skills (more written essays with feedback), and referring students with poor writing skills to TUT Student Development and Support (SDS).

The Validation Board is concerned that the external examiners are being selected from an insufficiently diverse resource pool and recommends to the TUT Department of Architecture to broaden this in terms of geographical location, race and gender. This concern was similarly raised by the visiting Board in 2012 but has gone unaddressed.

From 2018 onwards the list of examiners is reviewed at the beginning of the year by HOD, to ensure diversity of external examiners for each module. The A_DRIC reviews the list of examiners for the MArch 2 and MArch Tech 2 programmes.

Some students, especially those who stay far away, commented that distance is an issue for them and makes it difficult to work in studio.

Some students complained that the use of Afrikaans by some lecturers excludes those who do not understand it and would prefer all communication be done in English so that all students can benefit. Many students who completed the Foundation Year spoke well of the program as they felt it prepared them to study architecture Students also complained about the workload of 5th year, claiming that many of them don’t cope with the workload and that it even affected the health of some of them.

Some of the positive feedback from students included there has been an increase of black students in the Department. The Visiting Board commends the department for enrolling more black students. would like to see a larger proportion of black students enrolled into the master’s program.

The department acknowledges this challenge, and in response design studio times were increased to make sure students have enough time to access the the studio, CADLab, MakerSpace, Library, ReadingLab, and other resources during the day.

Some students commented that the student body ESB is not fairly representing the views of the students. They feel that the leadership of ESB is favoured by the staff of the Department as they earn a salary and that there is favouritism in the department.

Measures have been taken to ensure the election of the student body, now called the AIRC, is democratic. Class representatives, through a line function, are able to raise students’ concerns as they arise directly to module lecturers or Year Coordinators and at staff meetings.

He commented that the staff and students enjoy the new building and appreciate the renovation of the old building. Mr. Schmidt mentioned the following as some of the challenges facing the department: Bad publicity of the University. The University is associated with frequent strikes. • The Department of Architecture does not attract top students. They had the opinion that students with potential opt to apply at universities such as the University of Pretoria and the University of the Witwatersrand that are perceived to be better.

The Department of Architecture at TUT attracts ‘low-end’ students. In response, the Department has created the Foundation Year program to bridge the gap between secondary school and university.

15.6 Comments on Resources and Facilities The Visiting Board was given a tour of the renovated old and new buildings and was impressed with the renovation The new building is well equipped with a spacious lecture hall, studios and other facilities and it has generated enthusiasm among both students and staff. The studios provided in both Buildings are generous, well-equipped and pleasant spaces, with lockable desks, lockers, power and networking. The main auditorium in the new building is big enough to accommodate a large number of students.

Design 1 The Architectural Design I course is well structured and managed. The course Outline has been well prepared. The students’ response to the course is positive.

The Visiting Board is of the opinion that several of the portfolios that were exhibited appeared shallow and that some of the projects are not challenging the students. A new syllabus was introduced from 2020 and MR T Ramatlo has introduced some changes (see PART C for portfolio of evidence).

Despite the observation that the course is well structured there is a certain level of complacency in how the course is actually run. Maybe more basic understanding of the principles of architectural form making can be introduced. In the same manner students could be made more aware of the influences of context.

Presentation Techniques 1 This is a very well-structured course with appropriate drawing and presentation techniques for first years. The focus is clear and it is well integrated with design. It is great to see that there is an emphasis on the qualities and advantages of hand drawn techniques in the age of computers to understand how different techniques are used to present one’s work to your client or even internally to your office staff. The aim of this subject is to improve the comprehension of the students and to increase their skills to communicate in English both orally and in writing. It is the opinion of the Board that some of the high achievers in this subject were scored too high as their writing skills were not up to standard.

Computer Applications 1 Installation of new CAD-lab equipment since the last validation visit is noted and appreciated. External Examiners advised that content of Computer Skills stream is appropriate and up to date with current trends. Course objectives are clearly defined and are appropriate. The course provides working knowledge of Windows XP, MS Word, MS Excel, an Internet Browser, Corel Draw and Sketch Up, as well as basic Computer Hardware. The course aims to provide a foundation for Computer Aided Design (CAD). Assessment is via a series of tests and practical assignments.

CAD 1 From the course program, the focus appears to be upon introductory level for ArchiCAD. The course is relevant to students who have never used CAD software before. External Examiners advised that content of the course is appropriate and up-to-date with current trends. Mark sheets indicate marks allocated for a Class Exercise and for a Contract Documentation assignment.

Congratulations to Estelle who presneted the courses in 2016 and Devaksha who presneted the course in 2017. LP: The content of the syllabus was revised and the module is now called Computer Applications in Architecture I. This subject falls into the Basic skill level of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and other applications assisting Design and Contract documentation subjects. Five practical projects are submitted referring to the Basic topics workshopped in the block courses for awarding of the year mark. A final exam submission is of the best contract documentation project and design poster referring to topics workshopped during the year to grant an exam mark. Year mark at 60% and Exam Mark at 40%, totalling the Final mark of 100%.

1st year - Basic 2nd year - Intermediate 3rd year - Advanced 4th year - Specialised History of Architecture 1 The first observation that needs to be made is that the course is only focussed on Western and Southern African Architecture. The question remains why? However this course content is not followed up in the course content as evidenced in the test questions. This course can benefit from a greater sense of structure and much more depth in terms of course content. It would seem that evaluation is only done by means of multiple choice questions. This might be due to the time it takes to evaluate the work. However it then remains knowledge on a very superficial level.

A new curriculum was introduced in 2020 where History of Architecture and Theory of Architecture Design modules were consolidated into one module, Theory and History of Architecture. The new content of the module addresses these concerns.

This range of experience is deemed both appropriate and valuable. The course builds upon skills and knowledge acquired during First Year. The course is assessed via a portfolio submission (work completed during period of placement in an office) and a written test, which is deemed appropriate. CAD 2 The course builds upon the CAD I introductory course. The focus is upon equipping the students to undertake computer modelling and technical documentation skills using ArchiCAD. The course is taught via three full day lecture sessions at the beginning of 2nd Year in a wellequipped 38-station CAD laboratory located in Building 2. The Visiting Board noted comments regarding a lack of studio culture precipitated by the building refurbishment during interviews with staff and students, although during visits to studios the Visiting Board noted a reasonable number of students working in the studios. Given the already restricted amount of contact time between staff and students (3 hours per week), a further reduction in staff time should be avoided at all costs.

Alternative methods (like pise or soil construction) are studied, although quite superficially. Assessment in general across all 5 years seems to be focused on small tests with multiple choice questions or sketches requiring annotation.

The combination of the modules was implemented from 2020 and changes are observable in PART C.

There was no evidence of rigorous testing of intellectual issues in construction or the comparison of different structural systems. It is a very pragmatic approach, which might work, but it does not challenge students to question decisions regarding the reasons for deciding on different structural systems or methods.

Assessment is too focused on multiple choice/ short form responses. No written work was visible and academic rigour consequently appears to be lacking. Consolidation of subjects (for example by combining Construction Materials with Construction Methods) would make assessment less onerous and thereby help reduce the workload of students in years three and five. Greater use of ‘My TUTor’ for testing and communication would be beneficial and students invariably commented that this resource is underutilised. 17

External examiners were generally not critical of the school and expressed very positive opinions of both the organisational and academic aspects in their assessments. A concern was raised in the 2012 validation report that external examiners are sourced from a relatively small, local pool and that the school would benefit from expanding this resource to include examiners from further afield and of greater diversity. 6. Succession Plans 6.1. Recruitment Arch+ID recruitment happens through appointing student assistants and tutors and through part-time and permanent appointments. Students who have the potential to be successful academics and researchers are inducted as tutors with the hope that some of them will make a career in academia. In addition, some part-time staff end up as permanent employees. Although the department historically used part-time appointments mainly to outsource the teaching of specialised modules, it is beginning to focus on recruiting TUT alums and young graduates from other institutions to develop their teaching and research careers in the architectural disciplines, some of whom are currently enrolled in the department’s newly established Doctor of Architecture programme.

6.2. Talent attraction In order to effectively acquire the best-suited talent, the department is embarking on the following: creating a strong brand that reflects the department’s core values; valuing and appreciating current employees, giving them room to grow through funding staff development and capacity-building initiatives, awards, and aligning the teaching and research with their talents; utilising social media, the university website, and other avenues to communicate the Arch+ID identity, and whom we need to be part of the team.

7. The Future Historically, the department is unique and possesses a pioneering spirit shown throughout its distinct phases of transformation at the Tshwane University of Technology and in the context of other architecture schools in Gauteng Province and the rest of South Africa. It is on these roots that the department rises to find its position in the future of the discipline. In an attempt to establish international relevance by being grounded in local contexts and issues, the department has altered its direction since the 2017 SACAP Validation. How does the department position itself in the future of the discipline? On the one hand, the department is strengthening its research, philosophical and abstract identity. On the other hand, the department is committed to embracing and retaining its tradition of crafting and making in a way that the one does not negate the other. The research liberates students from the restrictions of just being work-ready graduates and instead stirs students in the direction of questioning existing practice traditions in the hope of creating new practices fit for the future. The department currently outsources the teaching of Theory and History of Architecture modules to part-time staff. Permanent academic staff are supposed to define and expand the theoretical position of the school, and due to the outsourcing of theory and history, staff do not have much control over the philosophical aspects, despite providing the content of the syllabus. In the future, it will benefit the school rather outsource highly specialised technical modules and those that link most closely with the current practices of the profession. The permanent staff will then lead the abstract and philosophical agendas. Out-of-the-box thinking and the zeal to do new things are important in the struggle to ensure sustainable funding of the department’s teaching, research, and community work. In addition to obtaining NRF funding and other similar sources, the department runs a practice, Studio 7, providing architectural services by employing staff and students. Studio 7 is not a simulation of a practice and is instead an actual practice that has the potential to extend what work-integrated learning (WIL) aims to achieve. In addition, Studio 7 provides a stream of income for the department. Exploring the potential of short learning programmes (SLPs) is one of the new things the department is actualising. In 2021, a free, week-long online training photogrammetry programme was organised and presented by the Italian University of Salerno in partnership with Arch+ID. The programme was well attended, mostly by technologists and senior technologists.
