PRESENTATION COMMUNICATION (WRITTEN & VERBAL)
Extended research-led projects presenng scenarios of significant scale, scope and complexity characterized the learning process. Working individually and in groups, involving complex problemsolving related to the design of buildings and our environment, was vital. There were several opportunies to follow specialist routes that established my priories and made independent and purposeful decisions.

01 KAMPALA CENTRAL BUS TERMINAL A smart moving city is one in which tra people can choose the most e i (public) transport, whether it is walking, a bicycle or a bus, with distance reduced to a minimum. In Vision 2040, Uganda’s development blue print, the country aims to achieve faster socio-economic transformation through government investment in better urban systems that enhance economic productivity, liveability and sustainability.
To meet this target, the government will have to strengthen urban infrastructure like transport, and public service facilities. This project is a design of a modern city bus terminus-cum-commercial complex that is located in Kampala’s central division to replace the current “old taxi park”. The design seeks to better integration of transport and land use, essential to supporting the economic, social and environmental objectives of developed and developing cities.

MASTER PLAN The master plan concept is based on the movement within the site. The design seperates pedestrian and vehicular circulation so as to achieve high safety of the passengers and unaltered buses in and out of the site. It also seperates the di provision of distinct loading bays and drop-o passengers.
r
The design also provides access for pedestrians from all streets through stairs and ramps allowing them reach the terminal level. GSPublisherVersion 0.2.100.100
For pedestrians from Ben Kiwanuka street, gates have bee provided for access to the site since the road is on the sam level with the bus terminal.
The design also provides soft landscaping like in the termin triad courtyard and the turning circuit that has shading in for of trees and seating area to allow for relaxation.
There are kiosks found along the pedestrian walks as seen o the side adjacent to Burton street taking advantage of the hig foot tra o i .

TERMINAL PLAZA: THE BUS AND ITS FACILITIES. The Kampala City Council Authority plans to replace all taxis (14 seater matatus) with buses in the city centre. The 1285 taxis using the old taxi park that service routes within Kampala can be replaced by 300 sixty seater modern buses but for this project, atleast 500 buses were planned for and an o -site parking facility was recommended to reduce congestion and for e i the city terminal. N
The Terminal Plaza is located in the NorthEastern part of the site at the juction between Luwum street and Burton Street. This is to take advantage of the heavy footfall at this point of the site context. The building invites the pedestrians from the junction to the bus terminal level and the services it o . This has led to design of commercial spaces.

18 Loading bays and 3 unloading bays have been provided for in the design. One of the loading bays is used for servicing the Terminal Plaza.

02 THE RAILWAY CITY MUD An Urban Redevelopment Project Redevelopment in Nairobi’s expanded CBD has gained momentum over the years due to increased business opportunities from within and outside the country. Many old buildings within the expanded CBD have been demolished and replaced with modern structures, while areas previously zoned as residential, have been converted for mixed-use purposes. Areas such as Upper Hill, Westlands, Parklands and Ngara are examples that are being redeveloped into modern commercial, recreationalentertainment and residential districts. The Government, the Kenya Railways Corporation and the County Government of Nairobi in the last few years have undertaken joint studies that seek to establish the way in which the central railway station and the surrounding area can be redeveloped to maximize on its economic potential. A number of planning scenarios have evolved out of these studies thus far and those will keep on changing over time as the country seeks partners in the redevelopment process. The purpose of this project is to explore ideas and concepts of urban design and to deepen the understanding by proposing an urban design plan and MUD that could inspire Nairobi’s urban future. Task 1: Urban Planning and Design Explore and critically analyse the function of the selected area paying particular attention to Nairobi's existing and proposed transport system, commercial activities and public facilities and spaces. The project will be carried out through an inventory of commercial, social and recreational activities, environmental issues, tra t o . This exercise will lead to the development of a proposal for an urban development plan based on one's preferred planning and design concepts. Task 2: Mixed-Use Development Identi . The development will be under prevailing planning ordinances. The proposed MUD will be built on land between 1000m2 2500m2 and accomodate atleast three of the following activities; retail & wholesale, accommodation, food & beverages, & banking, consultancy & professional services, residential, recreation (sports, entertainment), conferencing & exhibition.

MASTER PLAN The project is part of the Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Plan is aimed at expanding the capital's Central Business District as currently set up.
It also stretches to the locomotive and wagon workshops and the section of Nairobi's Industrial Area that borders the southern boundary of the Nairobi Railway Station.
The site is located in the area between Haile Sellasie Avenue, Uhuru Highway, Bunyala road and Landhies road.
The plan includes the building of a new railway station that allows for the integration of BRT and other public transport modes.
According to Kenya Railways, the proposed site for planning covers the area containing the Nairobi Central Railway Station, the marshaling yard, and the Kenya Railways Pension Scheme Land (Landimawe Estate).
The refurbished Nairobi central station shall be designed to be a multi-modal hub in the CBD to ensure the seamless connection among commuter rail, BRTs, city bus and nonmotorised transport (NMT) like cycling.

SITE PLAN
The proposed site plan seeks to give life to this area through zoning that allocates better land use activities and improves the quality of urban life.
LEGEND
The proposal also maximizes the use of green open spaces in promoting the interaction between people and nature through creating parks, courtyards and roof gardens. The park is centrally placed for easy accessibility but more distinctively to act as a point at which the people can meet for di .

The design promotes connectivity between the di zones, built structures and the green spaces by provision of su i o s e . A BRT system has been integrated on Enteprise Road which runs and connects to the multi modal station o s . BRT can improve bus speeds, reliability and identity while minimizing adverse impacts on street tra , pedestrian and property access. BRT is regarded as an environmentally responsive and cost-e . It provides more operating , adapts better to stage development, and generally costs less than rail transit. The transport system will also be supported by a city bus service and a design that provides wide and safe sidewalks to promote walkability and cycling within the site.
COMMERCIAL ZONES AND OFFICE PARK The commercial zones are located within the core of the site, along principle arterial roads, bus routes and local roads for easy service and access for both pedestrians and motorists. The commercial include;
spaces
-O e -Retail Stores -Restaurants -Supermarkets -Boutiques -Hotels/Motels
RESIDENTIAL ZONES The residential zones are mostly found on the periphery of the site, towards the Muthurwa housing scheme. The structures are mostly M.U.Ds with commercial spaces on the ground o residential spaces on the upper o . The Mixed Use Housing percentage decreases as one moves towards the commercial zones.

Both zones are found between the commercial and residential zones. Institutional zone caters space for schools that will provide education to the residents living nearby. Public utilities such as health centers, community halls and religious structures are also found in this zone for easy access to the residents.
INDUSTRIAL ZONES The light industries are located at the periphery of the site along between Factory Street and Commercial Street, closer to the other industries nearby hence maintaining an e i work .
GREEN PARK The green park is located at the center of the site acting as a meeting point for di activities. It creates a suitable environment for interaction between the people and nature.
