This is a dessert which used to be made in homes all over the country and consisted of a sponge mixture in a pastry case, flavoured with almonds, with jam at the bottom.

Apple Crumble •History Crumbles originated in Britain during the 2nd World War because the ingredients needed to create the bases of a normal pie weren’t available. Pie’s would require too much flour and sugar to make the pastry. So people in the 2nd World War made a simple mixture of flour, margarine and sugar and used this to make the top of the crumble. The dish is also popular to its simplicity.

VICTORIA SPONGE •HISTORY The Victoria in question is Queen Victoria who reigned as Queen of Great Britain, and the British Empire, for the best part of the nineteenth century. Queen Victoria's reign was a golden age for some and there were many innovations. The Victoria sponge cake was invented as a sweet treat to accompany tea-time which was a new concept at this time. The Queen's sweet that were served became her favourites.
