Paddle Round The Pier

Your guide to this year's festival Aloha, Welcome to the 2014 Paddle Round the Pier Beach Festival. This annual event has grown from very humble beginnings in 1996 into what is now considered to be the World's largest charitable beach festival. Paddle remains one the highlights of Brighton’s summer calendar, with visitor numbers in 2013 of some 55,000, from the city and across the globe who all converge on Hove Lawns to celebrate a little aloha! Paddle Round The Pier is a two-day extravaganza where the sea meets the beach and thousands of people enjoy a huge variety of activities, sporting competitions, music and other entertainment. A highlight for 2014 is going to be the Surf Lifesaving competition with competitors coming from 70 clubs around the UK. There’s a few new surprises in there, as always, along with some firm favourites like the Bone-Yard Dog Show, strongman contest and look out for the IRB (inshore Rescue Boat) racing display on Sunday morning. Over the past few years, the event has raised over £200,000.00 for the chosen charities and this year we’re looking to increase that figure with your help by supporting the RNLI, Surf Life Saving GB and local children’s cancer support charity Freddysmile. See pages 4 and 5 for more about the charities. It’s worth bearing in mind that this event is organised and run entirely by volunteers - many of whom literally take unpaid leave from work to make this event happen. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the “Paddle Crew” for all their tremendous work and dedication to giving our city such a marvellous event. OHANA is the Hawaiian word for family - You will see this word on many of the Paddle Crews shirts and hats. This means they have volunteered on Paddle for 4 or more years and literally have become like family! Remember all monies raised are given directly to the charities so please support this event by donating what you can into the buckets carried by our official collectors at the gates and around the event. So on behalf of all the Paddle Crew (our Ohana) - We hope you enjoy this year’s “Paddle” and look forward to seeing you back again next year (July 4 and 5 2015).

This year's charities RNLI LIFEBOATS The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24 hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 137,000 lives. Locally at Shoreham, the new boathouse opened in October 2010 following a three year community appeal to raise £1million towards the new build. The station’s new £2.7million Tamar lifeboat, named the Enid Collett, after the late donor whose generous legacy funded the boat, arrived in Shoreham on December 10. She had her first operational shout two days later. All the lifeboat crew and shore helpers, apart from the full time mechanic, at Shoreham are voluntary and are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. At Brighton, the RNLI lifeboat had the busiest winter in recent years for the fully volunteer crew and station personnel.. There have been almost 20

call outs this year already, even before the busy summer season has begun. 2008 was the busiest year since 1824 for the RNLI in Brighton – with over 80 maritime incidents assisting 120 people..

SLSGB Surf Life Saving GB is a charity of 6,000 volunteers helping to make our beaches a safer and more enjoyable place for everyone. SLSGB volunteers have been providing beach lifeguard training and patrolling the coast for more than 55 years. SLSGB clubs are nationwide, training members aged from five years upwards in beach education, lifesaving, rescue and fitness skills, helping create fitter and safer communities by the sea. Surf Life Saving GB is the awarding body for the highest standard of Beach Lifeguard qualification in the country, and is the National Governing Body for Life Saving Sport. Brighton Surf Life Saving Club is regis tered charity, affiliated to the national

organisation Surf Life saving GB (SLSGB). We are an active sports and community club with members of all abilities and ages based on Brighton seafront. In the last 18 months we have success fully launched a youth section which comprises of Nippers (age 7 13) and Juniors (age 13 18). The young folk participate in up to 3 sessions a week in both the pool and the sea which are geared for the children to learn through fun and enjoyment. We are the only club in the UK that go in the sea all year round – even in the snow! Depending on conditions, age and ability the training sessions may include swim ming, paddle boarding, board rescues, tube rescues, towing, line throwing, first

aid and/or beach flags (a sprinting sport). Our aim is to teach young people to be safe by the sea and encourage an active lifestyle. Specifically for the Junior section we aim to have them ready to qualify as a Surf Lifeguard by their 16th birthday.

For more information and to find out about SLSGB qualifications, contact: SLS at info@brightonslsc.org

We are a family based in Lancing, West Sussex. In 2010 we went through the worst time in our lives after our son Freddy was diagnosed with a tumour. During that year, a charity kindly sent our family on a break to the New Forest. It gave us the opportunity to just be a normal family and have time away from hospitals and doctors and let our children just simply be children and have some fun. We decided to set up a charity to try and offer the same opportunity to other children. Our brave son smiled his way through that scary and painful year and he won his battle, and that is why we

called the charity Freddysmile. So that is how it all started… Since that time, with support from so many kind people and many local businesses, we have raised funds to buy three caravans at the Bunn Leisure Holiday Park in Selsey, West Sussex. We have also become the only charity in the UK to provide Hickman line drysuits to allow children with a Hickman line to swim. We are honoured to be one of the beneficiaries for this year’s Paddle Round the Pier. Please feel free to get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you. Urban Athletics

We are a community of people into parkour, freerunning, tricking and street stunting – a real mixture of styles and disciplines. We train in and around Brighton and Hove and we travel to meet up and train with like minded people across the South. Parkour is a quest to find the most efficient method to overcome any obstacle in your path. When you reach a level of mastery, individual movements don’t matter, but much like a martial art, you must build up to this point with a strong foundation of the basics. Once you commit some of the simple, foundation movements to memory, you’re free to move without extraneous thought. Check out the Urban Athletics Crew performing from 12noon daily in the Paddle Village.

Turn & Burn Competition

The Slalom Turn & Burn Competition is back this year thanks to Octane and Ocean Sports. Helmets are mandatory for all races. Sign up by 11:00 on Saturday 5th July on Hove promenade and races will run between 11:00 – 16:30 on both days.

The Sharkbait Surf Tent

Unbeknown to most of Brighton, there is a huge underground community of surfers along the Sussex coast. It was from this community that that the ‘Paddle Round the Pier’ came to being when a bunch of us rounded up by Dave Samuel first met on Hove Lawns, made the paddle together and raised some cash for local charities. After all these years who would have guessed the extent to which this yearly event grew from our first small gathering. This year the festival is giving something back to the local surfers, a tent amongst the ‘village’ showcasing local surfing in the form of art and photography of surfing in Brighton from now and back in the days. Come down and meet the Sharkbait team (www.Sharkbait.co.uk), who have been updating daily surf reports and forecasts for the last 14 years. Visit the tent and have chat about surfing in Brighton

Paddle Round The Pier

Music on the Main Stage Jen Collins, Main Stage director @JenPaddle

In 2006 I, Jen Collins aka Jen Paddle, joined the paddle team, as an avid follower of the Brighton music scene and back then a bit of a party animal. I set about creating a stage with three main aims: 1. To show off the best local music around 2. To help raise as much money as possible for charity 3. To get those paddle supporters dancing their socks off With the help of the wonderful Brunswick pub and Yellowfish Music Studios, 2007’s Paddle Round the Pier festival saw this happen, from then the music stage just took off. Each year more and more great quality bands wanted to get involved and this saw the crowds in search for summertime fun grow into their thousands. To pick even a few highlights from over the years would be simply be too hard as it has all been amazing and this year aims to be no different. There is so much fantastic live music at Paddle Round the Pier this year; you’ll

be in a constant state of shock about the fact that you only donated £1 to get in. The answer to this is to donate more, much more because every penny raised goes to the charities we’re supporting, which this year are RNLI, Freddysmile and SLSGB. Doing our very best to support the local music scene, the majority of the acts performing on stage are from these very pebbly shores and there’s something for everyone: Kiddie rock stars, the heavenly sound of a community choir, singer song writers with voices that will stop you in your tracks, folk, Rock, Pop, Fip Fok (not a clue either), Ska, Electro Funk, Psychedelia, Beat Poetry, Jazz, Gypsy Jazz, Reggae, Swing, rock & roll, rhythm & blues, jump jive & Electro Swing… and take a breath. The live music starts off bright and early both days finishing at 8pm on Saturday and 6pm Sunday. Each day starts off with a slower pace of music slowly building band upon band until you’re nicely warmed up and before you know it, you’re jigging around with your dancing shoes on (which at the Paddle is bare foot), wishing it would never end. So are you sitting comfortably? Because here’s the final line up.

Paddle Round The Pier

Swims @ Paddle There are 2 Swim categories for 2014: Saturday 5th July sees the 2.5k swim organised by SLSGB – which is open to all. Sunday 6th July sees the 1.25k swim organised by Swim Brighton which is open to all. This year, we are delighted to confirm that there will be two swims over the Paddle weekend for both fun and serious swimmers. The shorter 1.25k fun swim will be on Sunday, July 6 and is being organised by Swimtrek – the world’s leading swimming holiday company and Paddle’s long term partner in Swim Round the Pier. The 2.5k swim will be provided by Surf Life Saving Club GB (SLSGB) – one of this year’s charities. There are wetsuit and non-wetsuit categories in both races. Race entry includes an official event swim hat which you will be required to wear for safety reasons..

Saturday, July 5 9.30am

2.5k circular swim from Paddle Village, Hove Lawns Age: 14+ SLSGB bring to you this classic event where you will have a swimmers’ eye view of Hove Lawns and Hove’s classic seafront architecture. There will be both wetsuit and nonwetsuit categories (decide on the day!) for both men and women in the following categories: ■ Under 16 (min age 14) ■ Novice ■ Open ■ Elite Race entry is £25. This covers some basic costs of swim hats, petrol for the safety boats, etc. The remainder of the entry fee goes towards this year’s charities. Experience: Confident swimmers with some experience of sea swimming.

Sunday, July 6 9.30am

1.25k fun swim around the iconic West Pier, Brighton Age: 12+ Swimtrek bring to you this beautiful linear swim which begins on Brighton beach between Brighton and West Pier, in the heart of Brighton’s vibrant seafront area and finishes in front of Paddle Village on Hove Lawns. It is a great way for both experienced and inexperienced sea swimmers to complete a swim around Brighton’s iconic West Pier (conditions permitting). It’s a challenging swim for the novice open water swimmer, but the views of the beach and sense of achievement are well worth the effort.

Race entry is £15. This covers some basic costs of swim hats, petrol for the safety boats, etc. The remainder of the entry fee goes towards this year’s charities. Please note: On the day of the swim you will need to bring an additional pair of flip flops and a light warm jumper/fleece to walk to the start area which is located approximately 15 minute walk from the registration area at the Paddle Village. For further information and to register, visit www.paddleroundthepier.com or email: swim@paddleroundthepier.com

We recommend you register on-line beforehand as numbers are capped to ensure sufficient level of safety cover. However, if spaces are still available, you will be able to register on the day. Registration will be open from 8.00am in Paddle Village. Please note, all swimmers will need to come to the registration desk before your swim to confirm your attendance and complete essential safety briefings. On the day there will be a bag drop tents. Valuables will be left at your own risk and Paddle cannot accept any liability for lost or damaged items. We recommend bringing a pair of flip flops that can be left on the shingle beach during your swim.

Paddle Something Unusual What is “Paddle Something Unusual”? Is it a race? Well kind of It’s a race to be ridiculous and creative... The “Paddle Something Unusual” team event is the perfect opportunity for those less stable in the community to exercise their creativity and join in the Paddle. It’s aimed at businesses, groups of friends, a pub or a club etc. In previous years the crowds have been entertained by everything from an aeroplane to a crane, from a bed to a shed – the only guidelines are to make it as ridiculous (but safe) as possible, raise plenty of money in sponsorship – and have a spectacularly good laugh doing it! Who can Paddle and is it safe? Everyone can enjoy the land based activities of the festival but for common sense sake the organisers ask anyone who is taking part in the water to be able to swim a minimum of 100 metres in the sea. Paddle Director Dave Samuel says: “It’s as safe as your raft building skills are – most of which are normally delightfully dubious! Therefore there are plenty of Lifeguards and Safety boats on duty!” What to Paddle? The rules are simple; it has to be paddled manually have a minimum crew of two (no maximum limit) absolutely no propellers or engines of any kind You must ensure that is seaworthy and capable of making it! That’s it! The entries head around the old West Pier remains so the creations do need to be reasonably capable! Who wins? The joy of this mad cap Sunday lunchtime exploit is that it’s neither the fastest nor the slickest team that will win. It’s simply the entry that makes the crowd, the water safety teams and Paddle Director laugh the most – and they all love a good laugh! Peugeot dealership KAP won in 2013 by paddling a real Peugeot 206 car with its engine removed, closely tailed by Police Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp and his crack team of uniformed Sussex Police officers (apparently they’d spotted the lack of tax disk). Other favourites have been the cowboys with full size wagon train and Thunderbird 2 from PSU legends “the Average Joes”. Raising Money The event has donated over £200k for charity in previous years so there is a strong legacy to continue. The chosen charities for 2014 are, The RNLI, Freddysmile & Surf Life Saving GB. For further information email psu@paddleroundthepier.com Paddle Something Unusual takes place from 12noon on Sunday, July 6

Paddle Round The Pier

One of these kids could well save your life…"

Helping save lives Surf Life Saving Ask any kid in the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club exactly why they like to go in the sea every week, all year round and the answer is simple “it’s fun”. This vibrant and exciting kids club was formed in March 2012 and quickly went from strength to strength with a constant waiting list for places. Parents are also invited to get involved and undertake training of their own to become a qualified helper or even a beach lifeguard; which results in it often being questioned who’s having more fun in the water, the parents or the kids? The Nippers Club caters for age 7 up to 13 and the Juniors from 13 onwards. The Brighton Club is one of the few SLSGB affiliated clubs in the country where the kids go in the sea all year round (yes even in the snow!). For the winter months the kids all have thick boots,

gloves suits and hoods – which not only instil more confidence in the water but also make them all incredibly buoyant! Each session differs depending on conditions but encompasses CPR, resuscitation and general first aid, sea swims, rescue board paddles, board rescues, flag signals and sprint racing known as “beach flags”. There’s also a fair bit of surfing on the rescue boards when conditions will allow! There are two distinct areas of Surf Lifesaving GB, one is the obvious “saving of lives” and the second is Surf Life Saving as a competitive sport – both mediums are becoming increasingly popular in the UK. Paddle is extremely proud to be hosting the largest SLSGB contest held outside of the West Country this year. You will see competitors from across the UK compete in all age ranges from Nippers to Masters. The clubs are a friendly bunch so stop and have a chat – it’s a great activity to get involved in.

Paddle working in conjunction with BSLSC now host the Sussex Schools Junior Lifeguard program for four weeks leading up to the Paddle Round The Pier weekend. Brightons Peugeot dealership KAP have kindly sponsored this scheme for the second year running to allow kids from across Sussex the chance to experience both life saving first aid training but also to get wet and use the lifeguard equipment for a day. The reach this year has been 800 pupils. All schools in the area are invited to take part so if you haven’t heard about this before – hassle you head teacher for 2015! One day, using the skills

attained at these sessions, one of these kids could well save your life… This is the serious point The National Water Safety Forum, of which Surf Life Saving is a founding member, reported that in the UK each year 400 600 people drown in the sea or inland waterways and approximately 7000 more get into serious difficulty. There is clearly a pressing need to educate people in beach and open water safety if more lives are to be saved and incidents reduced. Surf Life Saving GB takes an active role nationally and in 70 clubs around Great Britain training people to become the volunteer

lifesavers of the future. We know that by giving people the skills to be competent in open water, not only are they then able to keep themselves safe but can potentially save the life of another. Don’t miss the Ocean Ski racing (the long thin “dart like” kayaks) or the rescues board races. The beach flags competition or swim races. The heats will all take place on Saturday with the finals on the Sunday morning. For the 2 stroke petrol heads among you the Inshore Rescue Boats (IRB’s) will be sure to thrill in their race demonstration on the Sunday morning.

There's something for everyone The Access Beach Aiming to be fully inclusive One aspect of Paddle which few people seem to know about is the Access beach. Back in 2010 Paddle Round The Pier introduced this with the hope to be as inclusive as possible. The Paddle Crew all thought that it wasn’t satisfying enough to just give a charity a cheque at the end of the event. We understand more than most the enchanting effect of simply playing in the water and how it can enrich a life. This passion for the sea and the simple reward it offers is something we wanted to share with the kids, their families and carers. We’re a bunch of old sea hippy’s at heart! Working in conjunction with Surf Life Saving GB; the event continues to facilitate disability individuals and groups as diverse as Cerebral Palsy sufferers, Downs Syndrome, Partially Sighted/blind and kids afflicted with Chromosome Deficiency allowing young people and children who often have not even been on a beach before access to the sea. Can we help someone you know? The “Paddle” crew work to a ratio of 3 1 to enable each child the support they needed. We supply new wetsuits/lifejackets for all

Access Beach @ Paddle. The bus company are keen to build on their working relationship with their customers some whom may have a disability. There will be a Brighton & Hove bus parked up alongside the Access Beach (off Hove Lawns) for the whole Paddle festival weekend. It is hoped that many parents/ carers will take this opportunity to consult with the company on how they can continue improve and develop their services If you want to see a true to aid access for all. Managing Director smile – take a look at Martin Harris said: the kids on Access Beach" “We are delighted to be supporting such a worthwhile cause in Paddle Round The Pier. are content to simply experience the power We are particularly excited to be sponsoring of the waves. The individual kids and groups the access beach, which ensures that the Access beach targets have often never everyone can take part in the fun.” even been on a beach before let alone gone into the sea! They do as much or as little as The Paddle Crew are always keen to they want to. If you want to see a true smile – take a look hear from any disabled young people or their carers who would like to take part at the kids on access beach. To be fair the now or in future years. Do you know of Paddle crew working this beach seemed to anyone that may benefit from such a beam from ear to ear too as it really is one great experience? Please speak to one of of the most rewarding parts of what we do. the coordinators on the beach or email: Paddle is proud to be partnered with access@paddleroundthepier.com for Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach further information.
