Emma Price Summary: “What is good?” OUGD201 Concept: Being small is good.
Initial research into how height affected day to day life.A main problem was tall people not having enough space. Concept: Being short is good because you get more space. Further research into relationship between space allowance and the economy.
Possibility of selling space as a product. Research into interior design, how to make space look bigger.
Looking at the language estate egents use to try and sell space.
Problem with first concept: focussed on leg room and problems with being tall rather than what’s good about being short. New concept: Being small is good because it gives you an advantage over others.
Brainstorming why it’s good to be small. Games/fun common theme. KS1 and KS2 children possibily an appropriate audience.
Initial research suggested insecurity as a problem. Anti-bullying material offered an example of language and colours. Didn’t like the tone of voice used. Educational material like Bitesize and Horrible Histories had a more favourable tone of voice, using humour.
Material my target audience might be interested in. The Beano was very important for development. Each of the characters were known for something, and they used that skill to have an advantage over others. It was reasoned being small could be represented as that skill.
Creating an identity for the character proved difficult, modelling was attempted to try and figure out body proportions.
Logo development
Developing the idea of creating a comic strip.
Idea of creating different ways to measure yourself, by comparison with celebrities. This design was not developed further.
Tim the Tiny Horse demonstrated a preferable way to illustrate characters.
Decision to exaggerate the size of the character, and thinking about what kind of things are possible at that height.
Visualising ideas
Drawings of MicroMike
Designing the typeface. Trying to maintain a handwritten style, without looking like faked childrens handwriting.
