The City of Chester is home to the annual Food, Drink and Lifestyle festival, featuring over 150 exhibitors, free cooking classes for children and is this year is welcoming the presenter of MasterChef, Greg Wallace, to be the judge of the Sous Chef challenge. Alongside these festivities, CamperFest will be taking place, home to over 1000 fellow campers, and ArtFest which features artists from across the UK. The latest adrenalin pumping craze to hit the UK is Born Survivor, with its gruelling 10km course complete with ice cold river crossings and barbed wire trenches. carlisle The Great Border City is seeped in history from the nearby Hadrien’s Wall to the Citadel. Words Emma Procter

arlisle began its journey as a Roman settlement, where the important Hadrian’s Wall was established running alongside the border of Scotland. Watching over the city of Carlisle, proudly stands the Castle, which was used as a medieval fortress over nine centuries ago but is now home to the Border Regiment Museum. The great Border City also houses a Cathedral and was once referred to as the Priory during the reign of King Henry I. Carlisle is home to the impressive Citadel, consisting of two large oval bastions that until recently housed both the civil and criminal courts.

Carr’s Table Water are a biscuit firm favourite amongst many households, especially during Christmas time, with the Carr factory being opened up in 1831. During the recent Cumbrian floods in December 2015, there has been a shortage of Carr’s Table Water biscuits as the factory has had to pause production due to the water damage of the industrial ovens.

Carlisle Railway Station was built in 1847 and was one of Britain’s most paramount railway junction with seven companies operating over eight various routes. The renowned line from Carlisle to Settle is a journey packed full of stunning scenery starting in Cumbria and travels through both regions of the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines. Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery was founded back in 1689, constructed with an elegant Jacobean façade, it is home to a large spectrum of exhibits and a considerable collection of art pieces. Many events are run from crafty workshops and old-film screenings, to ‘night at the museum’ sleepovers.

The Halston Aparthotel is the first of its kind in Carlisle, situated in the heart of the city, the magnificent Edwardian building is steeped in history dating back to the early 1900’s. The Halston’s predecessor, Carlisle’s General Post Office, was an impressive building inside and out with intricately carved columns and mahogany counters, it served the city for almost a hundred years before it closed in 2008. The Halston has strived to retain many of the buildings original features and structural beauty, and has honoured the buildings heritage by naming the rooms within the aparthotel after various significant, historical elements. edinburgh The Athens of the North has built up a mighty reputation through its stunning scenery. Words Emma Procter

dinburgh started out as a small capital city of Scotland, with an overwhelming population of more than 30,000 inhabitants, the city consisted of nothing more than a single street running West to East. The residents of Edinburgh were subjects to squalor as they were crowded into high-rise cesspit’s, with the aim to maximise the limited city space.

By 1752 a plan to renovate the city to become an expansive and metropolitan capital, consisting of terraced town-houses, open gardens and shopping facilities. Edinburgh began to create a name for itself by the late 18th century through its stunning architecture, with several buildings being built in the Greek neo-classical style,

ondon, the capital of Britain, was seized by William the Conqueror and saffeguarded through the construction of the Tower of London. The Tudor era came around and the finer elements of life were introduced to London such as theatres. The Globe is a world-wide recognised theatre where Shakespeare himself owned a share, alongside having his famous play performed there. 1666 witnessed the Great Fire of London which burned for four days and destroyed 80% of the city. Many significant events took place throughout the 20th Century such as suburbs being extended, the first underground tube and the World War II blitz.

In 1929, author J.M. Barrie gifted Great Ormond Street Hospital, Peter Pan. GOSH is an acclaimed children’s hospital, located near Russell Square, and is currently the proud holder of one of the worlds greatest children’s stories. Passing over ownership to GOSH, the copyright and royalties from all associated works and performances now belong to them.

The London Eye has become a global icon with its modern design and engineering, it has been the number one visitor attraction within the capital during the past decade. Offering breath-taking 360-degree views of the city and its famous landmarks, it is the world’s tallest cantilevered observation wheel, and is perceived as the modern symbol representing the capital. It is believed that the world’s largest stained glass window is located at the Minster, measuring 186 square meters, it is a vibrant spectacle.

Remember, remember the 5th of November, gunpowder, treason and plot. The iconic day Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up parliament, however failed and paid the ultimate price by being publicly executed. The rebellious man himself was born in York, and a plaque on the wall in Stonegate commemorates his birth, with the building that he was born in now being the historic Guy Fawkes Inn.
