My Boring Book.
Emma Schuler Art 130 Fall 2018
Welcome to my struggle of a semester. Being a perfectionist can be very frustrating when on a strict time limit. I tried my best and this is what I came up with. This is my boring book.
D-School Objective: To learn how to communicate with others, practicing for future clients. Also, to learn how to work with clients and understand what they want.
Engaging with another person allowed me to create something that personally would work for them in their situation. It was uncomfortable for me because we had to show our rough drafts. I tend to be a perfectionist so when my work was messy, it made me self-conscious about the project. This project was very fast paced and that made me very uncomfortable. I like to take my time and make my projects as good as they can possibly get to my ability and focus on detail so it comes out the way I would like it to. If I were to do this project again I would ask the client what their thoughts were on the first prototype, takes notes on what should be changed, and go back and fix the details they wish to see in the final product.
Dot Line
Objective: This project was to help build strong compositions using the Gestalt Theory. To start out by making many iterations and narrowing them down to choose the best ones. To practice craft and learn about value, scale, line, and visual hierarchy.
This project focused on Gestalt theory which is about creating a piece of work that has different components that come together to make one. It relates to this project because we had to think of all of the different principles of gestalt to make a successful composition. This project allowed me to see words differently rather than just their literal meaning. It showed
me that there are many ways to represent things in design rather than just writing it out. I think this project made it easier for me to represent ideas without illustrating them. It allowed me to think harder and interpret the words in my own way. The gestalt theory can help with many different projects other than this one. It helps to give an idea of what makes a piece of work more successful.

Hand Lettering Objective: This project was to start experimenting with different fonts and hand lettering. To understand that words can be represented by more than just illustrations and literal meanings. To refine your work and create multiple iterations to have a variety to choose from.
This lettering assignment taught me that there are an endless amount of different types of lettering and fonts. My favorite technique to use was charcoal and I would like to continue using it to perfect it. I like charcoal because it is easy to manipulate, and I enjoyed how I could make It my own. I would like to create a picture with charcoal next and learn how to use it for shading.
If I were to do this project again, I would try different techniques and see all of the different ways to create using simple media. Overall, this was my favorite project of the semester.
Object Iterations Objective: This project was to experiment with different types of media and show range in creativity. To have a challenge and use the entire process as a means of the final product. To refine work to the best of your ability within set parameters.

I chose flamingos for my project and they are a lot more complex than you would think. There are so many different types and each had their own details and characteristics. Using different media, the one I found most challenging was acrylic paint that I used to create an Elizabeth Peyton iteration. I found it difficult to have similar brush strokes
and patterns as hers and I had to start over many times. I also found it difficult working with the different opacity of the paint for certain parts if the image. I was very glad that we got to work in Photoshop for this project because it is a program I am familiar with and that I enjoy. I have used it for years and will continue to use it for editing purposes.
DataViz Objective: This project was created to be able to clearly represent data found, further skills in InDesign, and use type and images to show that data found.
While creating the Dataviz we had to keep in mind visual hierarchy. I thought that the 4-year graduation guarantee was what I wanted to highlight, so I made it the center of my poster and larger than the others. During this project I further learned how to use InDesign. I learned how to incorporate more color and how to make my work visually appealing. I also learned how to take information and minimize it so people passing by can easily read the message I am trying to get across. This was the first project where we got to use color and I really enjoyed it. I liked being able to choose my own colors that are appealing and that can catch someone’s eye from a distance.
