We continue to sell the new Iris named after our long-serving General Manager, Bob Willard. ‘Bob’s Fancy’ is featured on pages 22 & 23 of the catalogue and is a most exciting cultivar of Iris Chrysographes (the Siberian Iris - better known as the Black Iris). It is deliciously fragrant.

Dahlias are enjoying a strong revival in popularity, and we have expanded our range with some interesting and unusual new tubers. Dahlias provide wonderful colour towards the end of the summer and well into autumn; they flower prolifically and make excellent cut flowers. It should be noted that, due to their increased popularity, we may experience a shortage of supply and it is advisable to order early to avoid disappointment.
We have again expanded our collection of Lilies, to offer possibly the most comprehensive range available in the country, with 94 different varieties to suit all planting situations - whether for pots, beds or borders. For those of you who may suffer from allergies there is a fine L3379 Claude Shride

range of pollen-free lilies. We are particularly keen on the Martagon lilies which provide masses of colourful pendant flowers. The beautiful new variety ‘Jo’s Choice’ is again featured. It was named in honour of our Jo Heale, who has given inestimable service to the company for over forty years, and it has proved immensely popular.

The Pictorial Meadows Seed mixes have proved hugely popular and successful, flourishing in gardens both large and small. These mixes are easy to grow and provide an ever-changing tapestry of delightful colours over a long season, from June until the first frosts. They are ideal for filling any empty spaces. The National Trust’s Polesden Lacey cultivated a stunning display of the Classic Mix, as illustrated. A magnificent new mixture has been developed by Dr Nigel Dunnett of Sheffield University for use in the Olympic Park, and we very much hope to be able to sell this in our next catalogue. Furthermore Professor James Hitchmough is working on a range of perennial mixes which could be released for sale in 2013.

Many of our bulbs greatly benefit bees, birds and butterflies. Sadly modern farming methods can have a detrimental effect on many species and gardeners can help to redress the balance. Moreover it can provide such pleasure to see welcome garden visitors enjoying the fruits of our labours!
With your kind support we continue to raise money for breast cancer charities by means of our Pink Bulb Range. Early in the New Year we will be making a substantial donation to the Mid-Kent Breast Cancer Research Appeal which will go towards purchasing a much needed portable ultrasound scanner for bedside diagnosis. QVC, the shopping channel, continues to play an increasingly important part in our business. Our top quality, top size bulbs are proving extremely popular, as a wider and more diverse range of gardeners learn that bigger bulbs mean better performance. Your may have heard that gardening is to get its own version of Comic Relief in the form of the first ‘Garden Re-Leaf Day’, which will take place on March 13th with a nationwide programme of fund-raising events aimed at gardeners of all levels of expertise. Gardeners young and old will be celebrating the start of the gardening year with fun events to raise money for Greenfingers, the garden industry charity that creates gardens at children’s hospices. Alan Titchmarsh, when pledging support, said: “It’s a wonderful idea which will encourage every company in the garden industry to take part, have fun and raise as much money as possible for Greenfingers.” We at de Jager will be joining in, and details of our involvement will be published on our website www.dejager.co.uk shortly.

In 2012 we will be repeating the very well-received Tulip Festivals, as detailed on the back cover of the catalogue. The six prestigious properties, in a wide range of locations within the UK and Ireland, have planted a large selection of de Jager tulips, which will provide magnificent displays. We heartily recommend a visit to these magnificent houses and gardens for a very worthwhile day out.
We very much hope that this new Spring catalogue will serve as an inspiration in planning your summer garden. It goes without saying that we would be delighted to offer any help or guidance that you might require. Thank you very much indeed for your continuing kind interest and support. Yours sincerely, After nearly two years in the new warehouse at Church Farm, we continue to streamline picking and dispatch for the benefit of our customers. New temperaturecontrolled storage has been installed (both chilled and warm), providing optimum conditions for all bulbs, so that customers receive them in the very best of condition. Many of our warehouse staff have been with the company for well over ten years, and they provide invaluable quality control as all bulbs are picked by hand.

DAHLIA - SET THE TONE IN MID-SUMMER Dahlias are much prized for cutting and they are very decorative in the garden. The Dahlias we offer are in the form of tubers, and from February onwards TOP QUALITY FIELD GROWN TUBERS will be despatched in polythene bags, in which they may be safely kept until planting time, stored in a cool place. Dahlias thrive in rich soil, and an application of well rotted manure is most beneficial. During dry weather water liberally. Plant 75-90 cm (30-36”) apart each way. Protect from slugs. FD = Flower Diameter.
ANEMONE FLOWERING DAHLIA This variety is also known as the Powder Puff Dahlia because the large feathered centres resemble a powder puff. A very showy variety, stunning as cut flowers. D4400

PICTORIAL MEADOWS MIXTURES These mixtures are carefully blended seed mixes of native and non-native hardy annuals designed to provide high quality and cost effective flowering displays. They have been developed following several years of intensive trials at the University of Sheffield. Unlike other mixes that are available, they will flower and provide visual interest over an extremely long period of time (from summer through to late autumn). These meadow mixtures overcome many of the problems that are often associated with creating meadows from seed, such as unreliable germination, short flowering season, untidy appearance and the need to sow on low-fertility soils. They create sumptuous visual effects; they are formulated primarily for their harmonious and impressionistic colour associations, rather than attempting to copy the species compositions of meadows that might be found in the wild. They inject drama into large-scale commercial landscapes, as well as creating sparkling, complex and intricate pictures in the smallest of spaces, providing a colourful, wildlife-friendly replacement for mown grass, or colour between shrubs, trees and perennials. The mixtures have been used successfully in urban parks, private gardens, school grounds, play areas, urban highways, verges and on roundabouts. Leeds City Council included a meadow mixture in their magnificent Gold Medal winning garden at the Chelsea Flower Show 2010. These meadow mixtures contain native wild flowers and non-native garden plants, and are a product of more than one country. Most are therefore not suitable as conservation mixes for use in rural areas outside garden boundaries. Sow these annual seed mixes in the spring – March, April, May – and they will produce superb colour displays within 8 weeks or so of sowing. Unlike other annual meadow mixtures, these mixtures are formulated so that as one species in the mix starts to die back, it is replaced by another, to give continuous displays from mid-summer through to late autumn. The suggested sowing rate is 2 - 3g per square metre. SD101

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q. Is there any grass seed content? A. There is no grass content to the mixes. Don’t mix with grass as it will kill off the flowers. Q. Can I just scatter the flowers over existing grass to create a meadow effect? A. Unfortunately not - the seeds have to be sown on bare soil. Q. Will the annual mixes self-seed? A. Only some of the species in the annual mixes will. To get the same effect you have to resow each year. Q. Will birds eat the seed ? A. No, they are too small for them to notice. Q. Will the mixes work in Sandy/Chalky/Clay soil ? A. Yes. They will work on all types of soil but the better the soil the better the result.
Q. Do I need to water the seeds if it doesn’t rain once I’ve sown them ? A. No. There is usually enough rain eventually and if you overwater they could rot before they germinate. Q. Will the mixes work in shady areas? A. Yes, but the mixes do need sunshine at some point during the day. Q. How long will the seed keep if I don’t use it all? A. Usually for several years - keep stored in a cool dry place. Q. Can I blend the mixes together ? A. You can if you want to, but that defeats the objective. Each mix is designed to produce its own long-lasting show. Taller plants in one mix may hide shorter plants in another, so you will get a better result if you keep them separate.

Please order early to ensure you obtain the varieties you require.
PLANTING DEPTH Failures with bulbs are most frequently due to their having been planted too deep or too shallow. A good general rule to follow is to cover the bulb with soil one and a half to twice its own depth, measuring the bulb from the base to the shoulder. Thus a bulb measuring 2 inches from the base to the shoulder should be covered with 3-4 inches of soil. Always unpack bulbs on arrival and leave bags open so air can circulate until planting. 44
