What can false lashes do for you? The human face is made of many features; the ones that stand out the most are usually eyes, cheek structure and lips. In the feminine face profile these features are usually defined through use of make up. For example, foundation and blusher draw attention to your cheeks and provide a baseline for your facial profile, your lips are defined by gloss or shaded from lipstick and your eyes are highlighted with mascara and eyeliner. This is fine, but adding more volume and definition to eyelashes can alter the whole facial profile and determine your overall look. Most women overlook this and will never achieve the styles made possible through false eyelashes. The majority of women stop there and don’t think about eyelashes however; eyelashes are perhaps the most important facial feature a woman can have! The hair follicles in eyelids are sensitive and when you lose eyelashes they tend to grow back lighter and with less natural colour. This can make your lashes look very pale and in some cases none existent! False eyelashes have gained popularity over the past decade and moved away from the wacky party gimmick to essential every day items for some women. The best part about them, is that they can be worn for work, nights out and of course as part of funky fancy dress outfits! We are going to show you everything you need to know about false eyelashes from choosing the correct style, measuring for size, applying and even removing…...

Choosing the correct style of lash. If you have ever looked at lashes in a store you will notice there are hundreds of styles, colours and sizes, which at first, can be a little confusing! You will quickly notice the dominant brands on the shelves are Mac, Mister Mascara and Eyelure. These brands tend to be the best in terms of being hardwearing and providing value for money. The cheaper brands that you can find on eBay often produced in China tend to be flimsy to the touch and snap after one application. We recommend spending a little more money and going for one of the brands mentioned above however as a general rule around $8 - $12 is about the right price to spend on every day normal lashes. For this price most of the time, the lashes can be used up to 10 times if they are taken care of correctly, which we will reveal in the book! The style of the lashes varies quite a bit here are the basic types of lash you will find. Note when referring to false eyelashes it usually means a full row of lashes attached by a ridge. There are also individual lashes that attach to your existing lashes, which are usually referred to as eyelash extensions. Choosing the correct lashes depends on the following: 1. The occasion (are they for work/everyday or a party etc) 2. The density of the lashes (what suits your facial structure and makeup tone?) 3. The colour (what is your natural hair/lash colour?) Once these questions have answered you should have a pretty good idea of which lashes to purchase. Remember these rules are not set in stone, feel free to mix and match and experiment with different looks. For example light coloured hair women often wear dark lashes for a sophisticated evening look etc there is no limit to what you can achieve with false lashes.

If your false lashes appear to be too big for your eye, don’t worry… most false lashes are too big for the average eyelid and need to be trimmed. Just start off with a pair of small nail scissors and trim a tiny bit off the width of the ridge and the length of the lash if necessary. Be careful not to trim too much at a time or you might ruin the whole eyelash. To finish with the perfect size hold the ridge flush with your eyelid and make sure it curves round to match the curvature of the lid without any overhang on each corner. Remember, if you are wearing lashes for any period of time they can be extremely irritation and uncomfortable if they are too big as the edge of the lash rubs against the delicate skin surrounding your eye, so getting the perfect size is vital!

Choosing the correct eyelash glue. The eyelash glue is one of the most important aspects of wearing false lashes. Particular attention and care should be dedicated to purchasing the correct glue. Even the glue that comes with the most popular brands can be very average in terms of hold and looking natural. It is worthwhile investing in some separate eyelash glue to ensure your lashes have a natural looking seam and hold firmly to your eyelid. * Secret Tip!...It can be a case of trial and error when it comes to eyelash glue. Most reputable brands are safe for sensitive skin so it can be wise to test the glue on a patch of skin on your forearm to gauge the reaction it will have with your skin. * Lash glue come in two colours, clear or black. Although this is personal preference the most popular choice is to go with black eyelash glue as this helps to define the line of the eyelash. The best glues are featured below and have been put through our test to ensure they meet our criteria which is: • • • • •
No clotting or drying crusty. Keep a firm hold under the harshest of conditions (wind, humidity etc) Easy to apply (no dripping or uneven application from tube) Easy to remove (without pain or discomfort) Value for money (the tube lasts for more than 10 applications)

Applying the lashes (the fun part!) While there is not really a “right” or “wrong” way to apply false eyelashes there certainly are ways that work better than others going from experience. Most women blame poor holding lashes on the design of the eyelash itself when really, the majority of the time the eyelash glue or application technique is the cause of the problem! Before we explain a few tried and tested techniques here are some Don’ts… • • • •
DON’T use a hair dryer or any form of fan to dry the eyelash glue. DON’T apply excessive adhesive – with the correct glue less is often more! DON’T handle the eyelashes more than you need to, ideally don’t handle them with fingers at all. DON’T apply the adhesive directly onto your eyelash. This can cause irritation! The Toothpick Technique
Warning: Clean eyelids are a must before starting the application process. Please ensure your eyelids are freshly washed and make up is completely removed. Failing to do this will cause the lash glue not to hold! 1. Remove eyelash from packaging onto clear paper with a pair of tweezers. 2. Add the adhesive to the paper and wait for approximately 20 seconds until the adhesive is slightly tacky. 3. Gently dab the end of a toothpick to the adhesive and apply evenly onto the ridge of the lash. 4. In front of a mirror… pick up the eyelash with tweezers and gently push the eyelash into the inside corner and apply pressure gradually around to the opposite corner. 5. Once applied leave the eyelashes to bond firmly for around 1 minute. You can now curl the lashes using eyelash curlers

The Backhand Technique 1. Remove eyelashes from packaging with a pair of tweezers. 2. Apply a small pea sized blob of glue to the back of your hand 3. After about 20 seconds, pick the lash up with the tweezers and gently run the seam through the glue. 4. Apply from one corner to the next distributing pressure evenly across your eyelid. 5. Allow to dry for 60 seconds and proceed to curl if necessary.

Removing the lashes Removing false eyelashes requires just as much care as applying them. Many women simply pull the lashes from the eyelid, which can cause the lashes themselves to tear and cause a significant amount of pain! While this may be easy with inferior, cheap eyelash glues generally speaking, if the glue is high quality you will not be able to simply pull the lash from your eyelid. We recommend this removal method so that the lash can be used again to get more value for money from your lashes and avoid any pain or discomfort. 1. Take a cotton swab or thin piece of cotton wool and generously apply some eyelash remover to the line of the false eyelash (just above the seam) 2. Gently apply pressure from the outer edge of your eyelid and into the opposite corner. 3. Alternate between applying pressure onto the ridge and gently tapping the ridge until the remover soaks in completely. 4. Wait for the remover to loosen the adhesive. This usually takes around 3 mins. 5. Start on the outer edge of the lash and gently remove it from your eyelid using tweezers. 6. If there are patches of glue left on skin, gently dab them with cotton wool and a little more remover, until they gradually work loose. * Secret tip… Both olive oil and coconut oil have been known to have the same effect as eyelash remover! *

Storing your lashes for re-use One of the best things about false eyelashes is fact you can re-use them many times depending on the level of care you give to them. These tips can be very handy to know as buying false eyelashes can quickly become expensive if you purchase new pairs every time you wear them! These simple guidelines will enable you to use your lashes more than 10 times if followed correctly! (Although this does depend upon the quality of the lashes in the first place…) 1. After removal, place the lashes into a small bowl of warm soapy water. This will soften and remove any glue that is still attached to the ridge. 2. Once removed, use tweezers to remove any glue or mascara that is still attached to the lash. 3. Allow to dry naturally. 4. Store in original packaging, if lashed did not come with a hard plastic container then a small plastic box would be best to prevent any damage.
