YOUR 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP

2

FROM ONE FRIEND TO ANOTHER Dear Friend, It’s always nice to get a thank you letter from a friend, a hand-penned note from someone who has taken the time to reach out to you. Knowing they have been blessed by you even in some small way, that has led them to put pen to paper. This is our thank you note to you. To express our immense gratitude for all you do to bring health, healing and hope to some of the world’s poorest people. Every time I visit our partners and the communities we serve they are full of thanks for your kindness and generosity; for your faithfulness and prayers. Your friendship really counts. It makes a difference when times are tough; when emotional and physical pain threaten to overwhelm, when health workers are struggling to keep their heads above water. In your Annual Report you’ll find a selection of these words of thanks and examples of why your friendship is so important to Christian health workers and the poor and marginalised people they serve. Thank you.

Dear Friend, You and us together, we can achieve an HIV-free generation. Your generosity and friendship has begun this work. It is a privilege for me to sit with mothers who have HIV but yet still their faces bear the biggest smiles because their babies do not. Your gifts mean these women have the support of Mother Buddies. We know there are many mothers and many more babies that need our help if we are to see that HIV-free generation. It’s harder still now because floods and droughts have devastated food supplies. Without a stable diet, HIV medications don’t work, the disease spreads and people get sick and die. Your friendship is more important now than ever. We have hope that, with your help, we can eliminate HIV, which has derailed development in our country for more than three decades. Yours in Him,

Mphatso

YOUR FRIENDSHIP TO MALAWI LUTI’S STORY Luti and her husband Norman have four children and live in Chilonga village, Nkhata Bay. During Luti’s fourth pregnancy, she met one of EMMS International’s Mziche project carers, who encouraged the couple to be tested for HIV. Sadly, both Luti and Norman tested HIV positive. The Mziche project enabled the couple to receive HIV treatment, provided antenatal care and addressed the health of the unborn baby. Luti was given treatment to stop HIV being passed on to the baby and the couple worked together to take the medication correctly. Mphatso and her team at the Mziche project made sure they brought the baby for testing to find out if it had HIV when it was six weeks old.

EMMS INTERNATIONAL

Luti said, “AT FIRST FEAR GRIPPED ME BECAUSE OF THINKING THAT MAYBE MY NEWBORN WOULD BE HIV POSITIVE.” It is not easy for couples in Mzenga to have their children tested for HIV due to fear of stigma. Most parents wait and it’s the symptoms of AIDS that confirm the diagnosis. But Luti was supported and encouraged to protect her newborn. Imagine their joy and relief when their baby was tested HIV negative. Your friendship has given another new life filled with health, hope and possibilities. Thank You.

BABIES BORN WITHOUT HIV WHEN MOTHERS HAD HIV

I got an insight into the way of life of many Malawians and their resourcefulness and vulnerability due to dependence on the land. People passed with bikes loaded with wood, goats, sugarcane, sacks and buckets of maize flour balanced atop their head… Poverty has been visible at every turn. Our empty water bottles were seen as hard currency in a land where possessions are few.” 2015 Malawi Bike Ride participant

I have worked closely with EMMS on their Palliative care work in Malawi. The quality of their work and the carefulness that they exhibit in their plans and relationships is exemplary. They are professional, supportive, committed and go the extra mile at all times. Distance relationships are notoriously difficult but they handle them with ease and mutual respect.” Maggie Baxter OBE, Adviser to True Colours Trust and former CEO of Womankind Worldwide

My eldest brother Bruce, who was a good friend to me, passed away aged 29 in 1973, which hit my parents and his widow hard. During the latter years of my parents’ lives, we talked about leaving a legacy in memory of Bruce. I helped them set up a small charitable fund in his memory and they were able to make gifts during their lifetime, and leave a legacy after they passed away. My parents were able to see the impact of the gifts made during their lifetime but left me with the responsibility of investing their legacy in something that honoured both my brother and my parents.

We also give thanks for the lives of Miss Denise Earthy, Mr George West, Mr Philip Veitch, and Dr Herbert John Powell, all of whom left a lasting legacy of health and hope by remembering EMMS International in their will.

My parents supported a number of charities, particularly within the health arena, and before they passed away we spoke about g heckin thecetype ment c of work they liked to support. These conversations helped to inform my decisions about how to invest their legacy. I first became involved with EMMS International early in 2012, when I was invited to be a trustee of the charity, and I took part in a Malawi bike ride

in 2015 to celebrate my 60th birthday. The Madhipura Hospital rebuilding project ticked all the right boxes. It leaves a lasting legacy that touches the lives of thousands of people living in poverty, as well as improving the lives of Christian health workers in a continent where my father had worked. My brother and parents would have loved to have seen what is being achieved in their memory.

Like my parents, I, too, am committed to leaving a lasting legacy in my own will, whilst also trying to do as much as possible during my lifetime. Ensuring that one’s family or extended family are provided for is important but, equally, we should not underestimate the importance and impact of leaving significant legacies within our wills that will aid those charitable causes that are dear to our heart.

Dear Friend, I say this all the time, but for me, serving God and serving the poor are one and the same thing. I love my work and if I can relieve the suffering of others I will do this with a glad heart. This year has brought more suffering than usual to our beautiful country. In the aftermath of the earthquake, life has been harder than ever, especially for the poorest. You have been a friend to Nepal in a very difficult year, when I have needed our friendship more than ever. Thank you for remembering us and helping us in our darkest hour. I am training to be the first palliative care nurse specialist in Nepal. Your kindness means I, and the others I train, will have the skills to make sure everyone receives the care they need. With every patient I ask myself, “What is life like for this person? There is so much suffering, but I am blessed to be of service and to relieve their pain. I’m glad to have your friendship and support in this. Sincerely,

Manju

YOUR FRIENDSHIP TO NEPAL YEK’S STORY Practical pain relief forms a significant part of what you can offer to those suffering from incurable conditions in Nepal. Our work includes teaching health workers good communication skills so that those who want to know about their illness are given the opportunity to prepare and say their goodbyes. This is particularly important in Nepal, where it is the custom not to tell patients of their diagnosis or prognosis – even though their families are fully aware. 67-year-old Yek, a father and grandfather, was initially visited by the palliative care team in his home and given relief from pain caused by cancer. Then, the family were adamant that he not be told of his cancer diagnosis. Over time, a trusting relationship was built with the family during visits, support and counselling. When the family were ready, the pastoral worker and doctor were able to ask Yek directly what he thought was happening and gently explain, when he wanted to hear EMMS INTERNATIONAL

more, that he had cancer and wouldn’t get better. When his family came back into the room, he immediately told them, “I have cancer.” This was critical in enabling the family to talk together and plan for the next stages in Yek’s illness. In the last stages, Yek’s symptoms increased. He was one of the fortunate few in Nepal who was able to be cared for in a palliative care bed in a hospital, his pain, comfort and symptoms being managed. Yek died a week after admission. His daughter said, “I HAVE WATCHED MANY CANCER VICTIMS, INCLUDING MY MOTHER, DIE IN PAIN, BUT MY FATHER DIED WITH HIS PAIN CONTROLLED AND WITH SO MUCH DIGNITY. THINKING OF HIS END WITH SO MUCH SUPPORT AND CARE HEALS MY PAIN.”

Dear Friend, Your friendship saves lives every day, literally every day. Your generous support has equipped our hospital with phototherapy machines and ventilators so that no baby has to die from easily treatable conditions like jaundice. You have sent a light into dark places. My team go out into the villages of Bihar to find mothers, some still children themselves, and make sure they and their babies get the care that they need. It is a privilege to work with people who not only give but also pray. As we continue this work, it is a comfort to know that we are in the thoughts of praying friends. With thanks,

Sharon

YOUR FRIENDSHIP TO INDIA JUST IN TIME. ANEETA’S STORY Aneeta Devi was semi-conscious but could hear the shouts of the women forcing her to bear down. She felt hands pressing down on her abdomen, trying in vain to deliver her baby. She wanted to scream at the top of her lungs for these women to stop, but did not have the strength to even take the next breath. Thanks to EMMS International’s health project with the Duncan Hospital, the village nutrition worker had been trained in identifying high risk pregnancies. When she heard that all the women in the village had gathered at Aneeta’s house, she went there to see what was happening. One look at the young woman and the nutrition worker realised that something was wrong. By providence, Duncan Hospital was conducting an antenatal clinic in the nearby village and so the nutrition worker ran there. She found a senior nurse who understood the gravity of the situation and came to see Aneeta.

EMMS INTERNATIONAL

Aneeta says, “IF NURSE KARUNA HAD NOT COME TO RESCUE ME THAT DAY, I WOULD NOT BE ALIVE TO TELL YOU THIS STORY”. After being taken to the Duncan Hospital, Aneeta’s baby was successfully delivered by vacuum extraction. She felt her heart was going to burst with joy. Aneeta and her husband are now much wiser and bolder when it comes to matters relating to pregnancy and health. They care for their baby daughter and have decided to follow the Duncan nurse’s advice on birth spacing. Thanks to friends at EMMS International, the dreams Aneeta has for her baby may now become a reality.

23

At Duncan Hospital, I found a committed team of people working hard to bring hope and a greater sense of human dignity to people in the midst of terrible circumstances and a culture where human life (especially female life) is not valued as highly as it should be. In doing this, they are imitating the self-sacrificial love of their Lord, Jesus Christ.”
