Visual Communication could be described as “how practise and theory connect to demonstrate the value of a dialogue between the two,. (Baldwin, J. 2006). Throughout this critical journal I will be discussing and demonstrating how I have produced content for four briefs via using both CAD and research skills combined to ensure effective visuals.

Chapter 1: JD Sports Brief
BURY IT? “Bury It?” is a brand of sportswear garments created in response to the given JD Sports brief. Although JD Sports is a strong brand name that ensures the brand is well known and stands out among competitors such as Sports Direct; its own brands sold within JD Stores such as “Pink Soda” and “Supply and Demand” are not largely popular, potentially due to the lack of relation it has to the brands identity and heritage. “Bury It?” has been created to address this issue, with the name evolving from the birthplace of the company in Bury, Manchester and the logo depicting the Manchester worker bee. The image of the bee and the rhetorical question “Bury It?” relates to the brands concern for the environment, in particular the 300,000 tonnes of clothes per year being sent to landfill in the UK (The Times, 2018.) WGSN (2018) have predicted that “sustainable fabric options and eco-friendly finishes”, particularly within sportswear will set the tone for AW/19/20; although this prediction is for the year previous to the “Bury It?” collection release, it is almost certain this trend will continue into AW/20/21. The brands garments will be made from environmentally friendly processes and sustainable materials such as Viscose and Lyocell, similar to the materials used by sustainability enthusiast, Stella McCartney, within her Adidas sportswear collaboration.

“s u s t a i n a b l e fabric options and ecof r i e n d l y f inishes”, (WGSN, 2018.)
The predicted color palette by WGSN (2018) for AW/19/20 shows “Filtered Pales” which is very similar to the earthly tones and color palettes used by Kanye West within his Yeezy collections and Stella McCartney within her sustainable collections; whilst also forecasting a “Perished Pastels” color palette from which grew the inspiration for the “Bury it?” color palette ensuring it differed and was recognizable amid competitor sustainable brands. “Optical Geos” is also a forecasted pattern for this season which highlights the honeycomb pattern (relating back to the worker bee) would be suitable for the collection as it “creates a sense of movement [on the garments] and a subtle retro feel” (WGSN, 2018.)
9
Bury It?... In the past, JD stores have stocked collections such as “Yeezy” and “Ivy Park”, both of which were highly anticipated due to the exclusivity and limited numbers of products; “Bury It?” has been created in response to the JD Sports consumers need for exclusivity. The unisex brand has a target audience aged 18-30 who search for uniqueness within garments and appreciate the heritage of the brand. Generation-Z make up nearly 50% of this audience, a generation who are growing increasingly concerned with climate change and how their choices as a consumer matter in tackling the issue; thus potentially encouraging the popularity of the brand. Similar to tactics used by Yeezy and Supreme, Bury It? Could use social media campaigns to create hype over a new collection “drop” emphasizing the excitement of its exclusivity. This target audience could also be reached through the use of advertising within edgy editorial magazines such ID; within the mood board I have created I have highlighted the greenery of the locations where the campaign images could be shot but I have also included the idea of a shoot on a clothing landfill to raise awareness of the issues the brand is targeting. .

Chapter 2: Millets Brief
MILLETS X FIB BENICASSIM The collaboration between the Millets brand and FIB Benicassim festival has been created to promote Millets camping and outdoor clothing ranges to a target audience of 18-30 year olds, whilst coinciding with spring/summer music festivals 2019. FIB organizers are extremely conscious of the festivals environmental responsibility and therefore take action each year to keep their ecological footprint to a minimum; for example, they promote responsible use of water at the festival through employing water saving systems and their project Fiberosque encourages festival goers to share transport to reduce C02 emissions. Unlike their competitor brand Blacks who have produced several blog posts concerning humans environmental impact such as how we can battle ocean plastic, Millets have produced little to no information surrounding the brands ethical concern for the environment and their impact. However, they have paired with DTS to produce a UK wide service that collects and recycles unwanted electrical equipment. The Millets X FIB collaboration opens the opportunity to extend this recycling service to tents for festival goers upon leaving, in Reading festival alone in 2018, approximately 60,000 tents where left behind highlighting the need for action against this issue at festivals. The scheme would be named “Rave, Recycle, Reward” and would allow those at the festivals to recycle their tent and any unwanted camping goods at Millets pop-up stalls around the festival, encouraging FIB’s selective waste collection scheme already in place. To encourage customer engagement, rewards would be given for the amount recycled beginning at a reusable flask and up to money off a FIB ticket for 2020.

Not only could Millets recycle tents, they could begin to produce and sell tents and clothing made from sustainable materials such as Basalt fibre for tents. In 2013/14 Marie Hesseldahl collaborated with Rockwool to produce a prototype of a tent made from Basalt fibre which proved to be sturdy, insulating, and fire/weather proof. In the outdoor clothing sector, North face are storming the way for sustainable materials. The production of their Denali jacket sees 30 million plastic bottles removed from landfill each year and turned into fleece before being dyed using sustainable methods. Whilst a fleece is a necessity at a summer festival, so is breathable clothing for those hot days; Millets could produce their own range using materials such as Lyocell and Viscose.

Products sold by Millets are often darker in color, i.e. blacks, browns, plum, navy all of which are suitable for their current target audience of older, outdoor enthusiasts. To meet the target audience of this brief (18-30 year olds) and those that express their colorful eccentricity at FIB festival. Millets may want to consider a brighter color palette and eccentric patterns similar to the “artful floral” and “washed camo” patterns predicted by WGSN for festivals SS/19. Millets competitor Blacks has also recognized the demand for brighter outdoor wear for festivals as seen in their “be bold” color collection.

Millets X FIB Benicassim
Millets X FIB Benicas
I have recognized how Millets do not have a strong social media presence unlike competitor brands such as Blacks and The North Face who not only have their own blogs which are updated regularly, but are also greatly active on social media platforms such as Instagram. This constant activity allows these brands to interact with their audience and consumers, whether that be through daily stories to keep them updated on the brand or through reposting consumers images to show appreciation. The target audience for the Millets X FIB collaboration are greatly active on social media and will be active whilst they are at the festival; through creating mockups of Instagram posts I have shown how easy the brand can communicate with festival goers both before and during the festival to ensure the purpose of the collaboration is met.

Chapter 3: Student Project
Founded in 1946, Dior is a luxury couture brand under the LVMH conglomerate. The brand has a unisex customer base aged 25+ across a global market, with females being the majority. Dior exceeds in ensuring that the brands original values of providing joy through creating beautiful garments that liberate women are kept. However, the brands feminist values have been criticised in the past as they are often accused of having “whitewashed”, “racist” runways, as well as their perfume ad campaigns being accused of sexualising women through connotations such as “female fatale”,”sex addict” and “hypnotic.” All of which connotations are created through the modelling, location, styling/makeup and the language used.

Critical
I have recognised this representation of women contradicts Dior’s beliefs and values which have the sole aim to liberate women, and I have therefore created a concept that aims to approach and solve this contradiction. The aim of this concept is to show Dior how they can represent all women of different ethnicities, backgrounds, sexualities, sizes, and those with disabilities whilst staying true to the brands image and heritage. I aim to produce a campaign titled “DI(all)OR(nothing)” which features women from different ethnicities, sexualities, sizes, and those with disabilities with the aim to show Dior how representative of women their brand can be whilst still sticking with the brands image. I will do this through recreating past ad campaigns for both clothing and perfume whilst also creating images/video of my own for the “DI(all)OR(nothing)” campaign. (This will be carried out as part of my FMP.)

Within my portfolio I have researched how potential competitor brands such as Dove and Lane Bryant have developed their “Real Beauty” and “I am no angel” campaigns to ensure that their message was portrayed effectively. I have created an editorial campaign mood board that portrays how I plan to carry out the photography shoots within my FMP. In order to ensure consumer interaction, Dior uses promotional campaigns such as regular short films; they also use these films to project influential messages into the public eye, as well as making use of their runways shows which in the past has seen models styled in feminist slogan printed t-shirts. I will keep this in mind when producing ideas surrounding the styling of the shoot and how I will portray my own message

Chapter 4: Final Major Project Project
Chapter 4: Final Majo The heritage of Dior as a brand is one that is very female focused with designer Christian Dior dressing major movie stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly within the fashion house. In 1957, the designer made the cover of Time magazine which gained him license agreements with the best manufacturers across the globe; therefore causing the fashion house to travel overseas. It was Christian Dior’s relationship with Marilyn Monroe that gained the brand so much attention, particularly through photoshoots in which Monroe looked eternally glamourous dressed from head to toe in Dior. Monroe is the epitome of true femininity, always proud of her hourglass figure she was idolised across the world by both her audiences and fashion houses who wanted to dress her. However, Dior is no longer highlighting this true feminine figure, but why?
Moving forward into my final major project, I will produce physical work of the concepts produced within the previous student brief and more. To portray the message of “DI(all)OR(nothing) I will use a diverse group of models to recreate past editorial campaigns from both Dior clothing and fragrance. These will be recreated in both the studio and on location depending on the setting of the original ad and all props/clothing will be gathered by myself. Alongside of recreating these ads, I will produce original images for the campaign to be used in promoting on social media and for the use of telling the individuals own personal story. Telling the story of the individual women involved has the potential to have an emotive effect on the audience as it is greatly personal and causes the audience to become more engaged with the campaign. These images will finally be printed into two separate look books.
Not only do I plan on recreating ad campaigns from Dior, I plan on producing a mock website for the brand which will be similar to their current website only will use a more diverse group of models. I am aware that there will be many barriers in doing this, i.e sourcing similar clothing, cost, time consuming it is something I feel will be greatly beneficial to the outcome of the campaign in showing Dior how they can truly represent women on all of their platforms.
