Emory & Henry College Mission Statement “Increase in Excellence,” the historic motto of Emory & Henry College, expresses our intention to be a learning community that moves toward fulfilling every student’s potential. Bishop John Emory, along with the founders of Methodism, symbolizes our belief in the union of faith and learning, while Governor Patrick Henry symbolizes our commitment to freedom and civic virtue. We affirm the Christian faith as our spiritual and moral heritage and encourage all our members to grow in faith as they grow in knowledge. We believe in the worth of each person’s religious and cultural heritage, inasmuch as that heritage leads to service to others in our region and the larger world. We affirm the liberal arts as our intellectual foundation for undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs and we believe that excellence results when everyone actively participates in the educational process. We challenge all persons to confront historical and contemporary ideas and issues and to develop the ability to think critically about all areas of human experience and to pursue research as appropriate. These traditions provide the context for our pursuit of excellence, as we engage a diverse group of well-qualified persons in educational experiences that lead to lives of service, productive careers, and global citizenship.

Message from Ascend Campaign Tri-Chairs While Emory & Henry College has a tradition rivaled by few, the higher education landscape is changing as never before, and the choices we make today will deeply impact the future KYRA KEGLEY BISHOP Emory & Henry Class of 1977 Chief Financial Officer Berry Home Center, Inc. of E&H students and the institution itself. Challenging times call for well-considered boldness. Patrick Henry understood this in 1775, as did Bishop John Emory when he advocated for the education of women in the early 19th century. Boldness, however, needs an action plan. As the saying goes, “To know the surest path, one must ascend the highest hill.” Through Ascend, The Campaign for New Heights, all who care about Emory & Henry College are afforded both the perspective and the means to ensure institutional relevance and excellence for coming generations of students, whether they hail from around the region or around the world. Thirty-five years before Loren Pope authored Colleges That Change Lives, Emory & Henry College changed mine. Drs. Stephen Fisher and Edgar Bingham sparked in this shy country boy a thirst for knowledge and instilled a sense of pride in being Appalachian. Small classes prevented me from hiding and demanded preparation and participation. I learned to think critically, to question authority. In time, I evolved into a confident young man who would excel in law school. Message from the President
JAKE B. SCHRUM President Emory & Henry College Emory, Virginia
This truly is a defining moment for not only Emory & Henry College, its students and faculty, but also its extended family, including you.
Before I became Emory & Henry’s 21st president, I understood what makes this college so special. Here, earnest students and dedicated faculty and staff interact with each other and the greater community in wonderful ways that edify us all. This should, of course, occur at any college, but it’s the passion among our people to do both well and good that sets Emory & Henry apart. And I’m not referring only to those on campus, but also to the legion of alumni and friends — you — who care deeply about this place, its history, traditions and, hopefully, its future. We’re truly bound together in a sacred trust as stewards of this place. Because no institution is guaranteed a future, we asked ourselves, what effect and relevance can a college like Emory & Henry have in a time of unprecedented global demographic and technological disruption. Our affirmative response is that the world needs many more of our kind of graduates — servant leaders who think on their feet, communicate and innovate effectively while continuing to learn throughout their lives. We can take heart in this. However, a changing world and our College’s imperative, “increase in excellence,” demand more. Our answer is found in the goals and objectives of Ascend, The Campaign for New Heights. The ongoing creation in Marion, Virginia, of the E&H School of Health Sciences, the College’s greatest initiative since its founding in 1836, is a campaign centerpiece, as is our resolve to renew and expand the institutional infrastructure on the main campus. Ascend is developing the resources to better prepare our students to be productive citizens both locally and globally, while it works to increase the College’s endowment in order to provide greater access to an E&H education, and to recruit and retain the exceptional faculty for which Emory & Henry is known. Ultimately, Ascend will provide the resources to re-invigorate the Emory & Henry student experience so that our graduates will be exceptionally welcome into graduate schools and the career marketplace. We will accomplish this through the creation of the Ampersand experience, which is the transformative result of a project-based liberal arts education. In its aim to make Ampersand available to all our students, your College is acting as a bold trailblazer whose lead many higher educational institutions will seek to emulate. We believe this because, even in Ampersand’s formative phase at Emory & Henry, the stories our students are telling about the results of this impactful integrative experience are remarkable, even amazing. This truly is a defining moment for not only Emory & Henry College, its students and faculty, but also its extended family, including you. How you choose to respond to Ascend’s call will deeply impact and influence not only your College’s relevance in Southwest Virginia and beyond, but its very place in the future of American higher education. If you share the excitement regarding the hopes and dreams for Emory & Henry that have already spurred so many alumni and friends of the College to offer their extraordinary philanthropy, please act now.
