River festival brought in large visitor spend The return of Liverpool’s River Festival has been hailed a massive success after attracting almost three times as many people as organisers thought, according to Liverpool City Council. Around 140,000 people converged on the waterfront for the various festivities, bringing £10m into the city’s economy over the week, it claims. The number of visits smashed the predictions of organisers who originally estimated around 50,000 people would spend time at the Pier Head, enjoying the free activities on offer from 8-15 September. Highlights such as the visit by liners Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2 attracted tens of thousands of people. A fleet of Tall Ships, the free Beverley Knight concert, the exciting finale of the P1 Powerboats Superstock Championships, food and drink
markets and an air display by the Yakovlevs Display Team also proved to be extremely popular, it says. The council’s culture and tourism person, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “The popularity of the River Festival has exceeded our expectations and I’m delighted so many people showed their support for the return of this event by turning up in their thousands.” July’s Reflection on the Waterfront which saw the Macula spectacular transform the Liver Building and the new Museum of Liverpool, attracted 60,000 over just three nights. The figures dwarf last year’s On The Waterfront series of events and this year’s events were funded by Liverpool City Council. 2011 is the fist time the city has hosted an official River Festival event since scrapping it 2005.

THE FACTS ABOUT MANN ISLAND & LIVERPOOL
Liverpool voted UK’s ‘friendliest city’ by readers of Condé Nast Traveller Rathbones takes more space at Port of Liverpool Building Wealth manager Rathbone Brothers has taken more space at the Port of Liverpool Building. The FTSE 250 firm already occupies 55,000 sqft and has added 10,299 sqft under a new long-term lease. It is now its largest base in the country, housing 380 staff. Rathbones has expanded into three suites on the third floor and taken on the building’s boardroom on the second floor, pictured, which will still be available to other occupiers. Last year Downing completed a £15m restoration and refurbishment project at the waterfront building, which is one of Liverpool’s ‘Three Graces’. Paul Chavasse, director at Rathbones, said: “The Port of Liverpool Building is already our largest office but this extension of our lease gives us the impressive historic boardroom as well as improved security and connectivity with our own private lift lobby on the third floor. “We were keen to stay in the building as it has unrivalled character and is in a fantastic location for us, and we’re pleased that Downing was so flexible in regearing our lease.” for more information visit

Readers of leading leisure magazine Condé Nast Traveller have voted Liverpool as the UK’s Friendliest City for a second successive year. The accolade was awarded at the Condé Nast Traveller 14th Annual Readers’ Travel Awards, which took place at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in London last August. Sarah Miller, Editor of Condé Nast Traveller, commented: “Readers just love Liverpool. They think it’s the friendliest city with very hospitable people and also great value for money.” TMP Chief Executive Lorraine
Rogers commented: “This is a fantastic acknowledgement for Liverpool. Anecdotally Liverpool is often known for its friendly welcome and the warmth of its people – but for this to be officially recognised by readers of one of the leading and most discerning travel magazines for the second year running is a major accolade. “We have a great range of world class venues, attractions and hotels which appeal to leisure and business visitors and this asset combined with the warmth of the people and the welcome we give visitors which encourages them to spread the word about what
a great time they’ve had. The people of Liverpool are one of our important assets and this award is a very special endorsement.”
Record visitor figures for City Region for first 7 months of 2011 TMP, the Tourist Board for Liverpool City Region, has announced a strong and encouraging increase in the number of visitors to Liverpool City Region for the first half of the year. July 2011 was a record month with 222,000 hotel rooms sold across the City Region –12,000 more than the previous highest recorded month of October 2010. This massive jump is being attributed to a number of factors including recent new hotel openings for Hotel Indigo Liverpool and Travelodge in New Brighton; an exciting events programme featuring the opening of the new Museum of Liverpool and Tate Liverpool exhibition, René Magritte: The Pleasure Principle plus investment by TMP in a national advertising campaign to promote the destination From January to July 2011, 71,000 more hotel rooms were sold across Liverpool City Region compared to the same period in 2010 – and 205,000 more than in 2009. Hotel occupancy for the month of July was 77.2% - the best
recorded figure for the month since 2008; Average weekend occupancy from January to July was 84.5% compared to 82.4% for the same period last year. 183,250 more passengers through Liverpool John Lennon Airport between January and July 2011 than for the same period in 2010; 200,000 higher footfall through Liverpool ONE between January and June 2011 than the same period in 2010; 37,000 more visits to attractions in January to July than in same period 2010. 250,000 visits to the new Museum of Liverpool in the first four weeks of opening – its overall projected target for the first year was 750,000. TMP Chief Executive Lorraine Rogers commented: “These figures are encouraging news for the Visitor Economy, especially during this challenging economic climate – and are a very strong indication that we are not only maintaining our momentum but moving in the right direction and becoming one of the top
international destinations to visit. It’s a challenging time for businesses in terms of margins and yields but the underlying trend shows that the destination’s appeal is growing at an impressive rate’. Earlier this year TMP launched a host of marketing initiatives costing £350k to boost the number of short break visitors to Liverpool City Region over the summer and autumn. The initiatives include a national advertising campaign on London Underground and in the national media, an online campaign, an events guide and visitor publications plus some specific initiatives to attract midweek visitors. Liverpool City Region’s Visitor Economy currently generates visitor spend of £2.8 billion and is estimated to support approximately 41,000 jobs.

THE FACTS ABOUT MANN ISLAND & LIVERPOOL
The Liverpool City Region’s cultural and tourism offer is the strongest outside of London The Visitor Economy is now of such importance to the local economy that it has been selected by political leaders and business leaders as one of the four transformational sectors in the Liverpool City Region that has the potential to make a step change and help transform the economy over the next decade. This strategy is the bedrock of an action plan that will be developed in close consultation with key local and regional partners as well as the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. An action plan that will harness the opportunities presented by the unique offering of culture, music, heritage and sport to enable the Visitor Economy to grow. This is a sector like no other; one that provides real employment opportunities for the people of the City Region in hotels, shops, restaurants, conference venues, visitor attractions, cultural institutions, transport and tours and creative industries.
It is a key driver for broader regeneration. Liverpool’s phenomenal success as European Capital of Culture 2008 was the culmination of a decade-long programme of investment in Liverpool city centre, coupled with the impressive growth of Liverpool John Lennon Airport. A decade which saw huge improvements in the public realm, the brand new shopping and leisure district – Liverpool ONE , the building of a major Arena and Convention Centre, as well as the stunning programme of events during 08 itself. It was a decade in which the tourism sector developed to become a major source of wealth and jobs. And of course all of this helps to improve the quality of life for the one and half million people who live and work here. It encourages increased inward investment, sustains our communities, our local facilities and attractions, and makes us proud to live in one of the most vibrant and culturally
alive regions in the UK. Over the past few years there has been a huge improvement in the quality of our destination offering - but there’s still potential for further development. The vision for the City Region’s Visitor Economy in 2020 is the result of extensive consultation with all those with an interest in the sector and this summary document offers a brief overview of just what we’re looking to achieve over the next decade.
