It wasn’t until I moved one hundred miles north that I began questioning what it means to be southern in twenty-first century America. Since moving back to Richmond, Virginia, I rigorously began seeking out signifiers of the many mythologies that exist within contemporary southern society.
On a recent visit to Richmond, whilst driving through the traffic circle that contains General Lee’s monument, my former roommate in Washington, D.C. informed me of her distant relation to Robert E. Lee.
One warm January afternoon, I caught myself standing inside the shadow of Robert E. Lee’s monument, attempting to illuminate it with an on-camera flash.
