Introduction This portfolio documents architectural design work produced in the last twelve years. Beyond being a thorough summary of experiences, the following pages feature pieces, each selected with an intent to lead to a discussion regarding particular interests, ambitions, and pursuits in architecture. My primary goal with this portfolio is to create a container for transmission of ideas and values. And my main intention is to reflect the attitude that drives the work by using both the portfolio itself and the individual projects. While informing the viewer about the content of the work, this portfolio also offers hard evidence of the qualities valued, chief among which are attention to detail, precision, versatility, and rigor. Projects featured in the portfolio are all examples of collaborative effort and teamwork. However, the projects specifically selected to appear here are the ones in which I played a greater role with a full scope of involvement. The same selection criteria apply to all the individual visual media in the portfolio. For each project, details of involvement are explicitly explained. By operating on all aspects of research driven, design enforced projects at a wide range of scales, flexible strategies and techniques have been developed for the complex and intertwining processes of creating meaningful architectural spaces. While working on the projects shown on the following pages, my main interests included the roles of representations and methodologies in the production of architecture and in the broadening the conceptual range by which architecture contributes to our cultural imagination. Bamiyan Cultural Centre Bamiyan Valley, Afghanistan 2015

Status: Competition proposal

Area: 2200 m2

Architects: Emre Bozatli & Ahmet Balkan

Visualizations: Frontop CG, Emre Bozatli, Ahmet Balkan

Awards: Received one of the four runner-up awards out of 1070 proposals from 117 countries.

Details of Involvement: Cocreated the concept. Prepared all the drawings, diagrams and the competition board layouts. Supervised and managed the visualization team.

Project Description: The proposal titled as ‘THE SILENT GROUND SCRAPER’ seeks to compress architecture into its simplest and most essential form to provide an economically and socially meaningful public space to serve the local community. The traditional courtyard – or the hawli – as an essential element of Afghan dwelling and a synonym for the house has been used as the starting point towards a vibrant communal life. All life and functions revolve around the central hawli and radiate outwards to

12

open up towards the greater culturescape of Bamiyan. These series of reversed extrovert courts each have a specific function and primary direction and focal point in space. Thus the building takes the traditional introvert hawli, reverses it, and stretches it out to extend and merge it with the immediate site and the valleys and mountains beyond. An in-situ concrete construction and locally produced baked brick is the main building material making up an economically feasible structure which allows for large and flexible spaces, supports the continuation of local building traditions, and integrates the building seamlessly with the landscape. The building will also provide future possibilities of growth, while the bare interiors offer space for adaptation and change.

Murro di Porco Resort Hotel Syracuse, Italy 2016

Status: Competition proposal

Area: 3000 m2

Architects: Emre Bozatli & Raina Kanari

Visualizations: Emre Bozatli & Raina Kanari

Details of Involvement: Co-created the concept and all the drawings.

Project Description: This competition proposal for a resort hotel is situated on a preserved natural park near Syracuse in Sicily, Italy. The competition site included an abandoned albeit still functional lighthouse and its auxiliary buildings located on the unique rock cropping formations. The brief of the competition limited the area of the entire complex to 3000 square meters and to only one story in height. Development of the main concept and the entire layout derived from the ways of responding to the context. Master planning of the functions, spreading the hotel rooms as individual units rather than blocks containing groups of rooms all rationalized from a contextualist point of view. The positioning of each hotel room unit and grouping the units within a zone where rock formations would be least affected also came from a sensitivity to the site. The main strategies which started to drive the concept were: Preserving the existing public areas, protecting the

16

public use, preserving the rockscape and conservation of the topography. Main hotel building conceived as a continuation of the existing base for the lighthouse. While preserving the original, existing symmetrical approach, the roof of the main hotel building became the viewing platform. The roof level platform gave the area taken by the hotel building back to the park and to the public. The 22 individual units of the hotel rooms scattered through the chosen zone. Each unit is positioned to maximize its view and the privacy of the guests. For “minimum intervention to the site in order to protect the topography, all structures are raised on poles, elevating the units over the ground surface. Finally, the specifically positioned skylights in each unit and in the main hotel building not only provides natural light and cross ventilation but these skylights are thought as devices connecting all the new development to the existing lighthouse. Each skylight is oriented to find the specific angle where it connects to the lighthouse. The special architectural lighting can be used when it is dark to create the houses of light, making all the pieces of the complex as one.

Status: Competition proposal

Area: 900 m2

Architects: Theo. David Architects

Models: Richard Tenguerian, Emre Bozatli

Details of Involvement: Played a significant role in the conceptual development and the entire design process. Created physical and digital models. Conducted extensive research about the historical and modern precedents. Took the responsibility of the developing the detailing drawings. Assisted the principals with the final presentation materials.

Project Description: A proposal for the rebuilding of a church at the WTC site whose idea was generated by an abstraction of symbols specific to the Orthodox Christian liturgy and tradition combined with the geometrical space of a sphere, which often symbolizes universality and as a response to the desire of the congregation for an ecumenical space. The forty foot high tilting oval wall rising from its own stone podium, unfolds out towards the memorial pools and park creating the main entrance into the sanctuary, conceived as a welcoming gesture much like an arm outstretched to all and signaling from a distance the presence of St. Nicholas, while serving

18

as the vessel within which the spherical dome is mysteriously and only partially revealed. This metal clad steel-framed dome is suspended inside the sanctuary by steel cruciform supports projecting through slits in the perimeter wall, integrating structural necessity with religious symbolism. The rebirth of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at the World Trade Center, should be ecumenical in its Concept through an iconic presence, welcoming people from every corner of the globe. The challenge is to reach this enlightened and noble goal through a work of architecture. We propose an architectural vision of today, shaped by contemporary design and technology, which simultaneously derives its roots from the essence of traditional forms and symbols that evoke Byzantine architecture and that, serves the liturgy of the Greek Orthodox Church. These forms and symbols, including the predominance of the dome as the spatial host for religious iconography, the geometric symmetry of the Greek cross, the chiaroscuro filtering of sunlight, drive our vision to create a spiritual space and ambiance which will appeal to the senses of any and all visitors regardless of faith.

Status: Study

Area:

NA

Architect: Emre Bozatli

Facilitator: Istanbul Technical University

Details of Involvement: Cocreated the concept. Prepared all the drawings, diagrams and visualizations.

Project Description: Peel-it is an experimental and speculative design concept. It is created while conducting research on issues such as flexibility, transformability, and mobility in Architecture. “... A table, a chair, a bus-stop or a dwelling... How can a thing become all of these? How can one thing turn to anything? The question above has started the Peel-it project. Shortly after investigating the problem, it became clear that the elasticity was the key concept to work on.

20

Elastic adj. 1 able to go back to its original length or shape after being stretched or squeezed. 2 adaptable. Elasticity n. 1 bendable, flexible, pliable, pliant, resilient, springy, stretchable, stretchy. 2 adaptable, adjustable, flexible. Peel-It conceived as a panel system composed of at least two layers made of peelable stripes which can be placed either horizontal or vertical, on top of each other. It is possible to place both stripes and/or panels horizontally and vertically as well. A single panel can be transformed into a table or to a sitting unit. Spaces can be created by gathering multiple panels. Peel-It panels can also be marketed as flat pack furniture. The potential implementations are infinite thanks to its almost limitless ability to transform.

Details of Involvement: Played a significant role in the conceptual development and the entire design process. Performed design alternatives and implementation with coordination of various sketch models. Created detailed digital models to test structural ideas, material finishes, spatial arrangements and interior configurations. Created initial conceptual visualizations and final detailed realistic 3D views.

Project Description: The proposed extension of a nonlisted existing building of mud-bricks into a three-member family home with contemporary need is located in an area adjacent to the Venetian walls of Nicosia. The existing building was divided into four main rooms with the south area as the

22

main one. All the internal dividing mudbrick walls are removed and the south wall that surrounds the main entrance is replaced by glazing allowing the sunlight to penetrate the open plan ground floor of the existing building during the winter months. Due to the removal of the existing partitions and unification of the internal ground floor space, the shell is reinforced and new foundation with steel structural elements holding the upper floor addition is inserted. Programmatically the private spaces as bedrooms and restrooms are moved upstairs leaving all the communal areas to the ground floor. Although the existing entrance remains, it is converted into an access to the southern garden and pool, moving the main entrance from the busy main road at the south to the east quiet off-road.

24

Project Description: The organizational idea for this community of educational spaces consisting of an elementary school and independent nursery school was to provide an architectural identity to each by the juxtaposition of an obtuse triangle over an oval. This severe formal composition which recalls the constructivist movement was further developed by the use of contrasting material finishes and color while repeating the oval as an oculus cut into the triangular metal courtyard canopy, as a raised exedra and music room volume.

Project Description:

Full scope of involvement, from initiation of the first ideas to the completion of the construction.

This high-end development of 18 vacation residences in Protaras on the eastern coast of Cyprus, is unique for the area, because of its exclusive location on a high bluff overlooking the Mediterranean and surrounded by public open land thus ensuring a quiet private environment with unobstructed views in all directions.

Played a significant role in the conceptual development and the entire design process. Created digital and physical models to explore the design alternatives. Prepared and coordinated Tender and Construction Documentation. Coordinated services of engineering consultants to be incorporated into the design. Conducted research on materials, products, fixtures and generated sample boards. Attended construction site inspections. Coordinated all post-completion matters and assisted clients.

26

Attention was given to the integration of the residences with the topography of the site so as to allow views not only of the sea but also of the surrounding rugged landscape and stone outcroppings characteristic of the original natural environment of Protaras. Furthermore, large openings facing west are avoided so as to reduce heat gain. The architectural expression of the development is derived from the indigenous architecture of this region of Cyprus.

The idea for this residence for a young family on a suburban corner lot was informed by thinking how (as in certain works of art) an entire microcosm can be accommodated and expressed within the restrictive volume of a cube of space. The microcosm of the act of dwelling is expressed not only by spatial folding within the given volume, but with the juxtaposition of contrasting materials including water that define horizontally and vertically habitable space.
