By air: Arriving at Detroit Metro Airport, take I-94 west to Michigan Avenue exit (exit 181B). Get in the far left lane and turn left on Hewitt. Head north on Hewitt for 2.5 miles, past Washtenaw Avenue. The stadium is on the east side of the road. 2011 Season Preview

In the past 10 seasons, the Eastern Michigan University women’s cross country team has consistently made strides to improve its efforts at the Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championships. A fifth-place finish in 2010 was the best outing since the 2000 campaign, and with a solid returning squad in place, the Eagles will look to look to continue that trend this fall. “The team showed good improvement last year,” said Head Coach Sue Parks. “We hope to take another step forward this fall. Although we have a relatively small team, I feel that we have more quality and depth than we have had in all my years here. A big key for us will be closing up our 1-5 gap. We will have to do that to be

successful this season.” The most notable returning member that should contribute toward that quality and depth is First Team All-MAC selection, junior Courtney Calka (Livonia, Mich.-Stevenson). The Livonia, Mich. native is coming off of a notable 2010 campaign, where she placed fifth at the MAC Championships and later earned All-Region accolades after pacing the Green and White at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Terre Haute, Ind. Calka was the top EMU finisher in each of her seven races which included three first-place finishes. She also set a new Pine View Golf Club 6,000-meter course record of 20:48.20 at the George Dales Invitational last season.

season, while Elcock ran unattached at the EMU Classic. Elcock redshirted last cross country season after undergoing knee surgery, but the senior showed promise during the outdoor track season this spring. The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native qualified as the No. 40 seed at the NCAA East Preliminaries with her 2:08.22 800-meter time earlier that season. The senior also posted a second-place performance in the 800meter run at the Indoor MAC Track and Field Championships. “Elcock’s return to the team could be a huge boost,” said Parks, “as she finished 22nd in the MAC meet in 2010.” Redshirt freshman Brooke Sciullo (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman) will be joined by newcomers Mary Smock (Wyandotte, Mich.-Roosevelt) and Victoria Voronko (Moscow, RussiaUniversity of Moscow). Voronko journeys to Ypsilanti from Russia and brings with her a considerable résumé according to Parks. “Voronko comes to EMU from Russia

“Calka had some spectacular performances last season,” said Parks. “We look for her to prove that she is one of the top runners in both the MAC and Great Lakes Region.” Also returning for the Eagles is 2010 Academic All-MAC honoree, Rachel Quaintance (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern). Quaintance competed in seven races for the Green and White in last season, including a 33rd-place, career-best 22:15.3 finish at the MAC Championships. Morgan Churchwell (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) was the second member of the Eagles squad to cross the finish line at the 2010 MAC Cross Country Championships last season, and will return as part of the Green and White’s large junior class this fall. Cassie Coffman (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) and Amber Hutson (Jerome, Mich.-Hanover Horton) will run alongside Churchwell and Quaintance in 2011, and Parks is excited to see how they will perform this season. “Churchwell, Coffman, Quaintance, and Hutson have all worked very hard over the last year,” said Parks. “They have all shown great improvement.” Tiffany Kincaid (Clarkston, Mich.- Clarkston) and Lauren Lunsford (Miamisburg, OhioMiamisburg) will round out the junior class and are expected to be solid contributors this season. Seniors Natalie Webb (Allen Park, Mich.-Woodhaven) and Beverly Elcock (Ft. Wayne, Ind.-Northrop) enter their final season for the Eagles. Webb competed in seven races last

with some great marks” said Parks. “She could also be a big key to the success of the team.” With several members of the returning squad coming off successful track seasons, the Eagles should be in a prime position to make noise at the MAC Championships this fall. “A number of the women improved dramatically during the track season,” said Parks. “We hope to carry that over to some breakthrough performances this fall.” The 2011 campaign will feature tours through Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana and will also include a handful of new opponents for the Green and White. “We have some new meets on the schedule,” said Parks. “I feel that it is a good combination of races against MidAmerican Conference teams and also national level teams. “ The Eagles will kick off 2011 in Toledo, Ohio at the Rocket Open that will be hosted by last year’s MAC Cross Country Champions, Toledo. For the third consecutive season, EMU will journey to Three Rivers, Mich. for the George Dales Invitational — a meet where the Eagles claimed victory just a season ago. On Sept. 23, the Green and White will return to Toledo for the Bubble Buster which will feature a slew of NCAA qualifiers and several near qualifiers from last season, including Arkansas, Baylor, Columbia, Iowa, Ohio State, San Francisco and West Virginia. The Eagles are then slated to make their debut in the Greater Louisville Classic

in Louisville, Ky. Last year, the national event drew in 35 teams from around the country and featured over 300 athletes. After a short stint in Louisville, EMU will head to Muncie, Ind. for the Ball State Invitational on Oct. 14, while several members of the EMU squad will compete in the Pre-NCAA Meet in Terre Haute, Ind. on Oct. 16. A week later, the Eagles will travel to Hudson Mills Metropark for their annual EMU Classic. Last year, several EMU runners for both the men’s and women’s squads performed well in the field in both the 5,000-meter and 9,000-meter events. On Oct. 29, the Green and White will head to Muncie, Ind. for the 2011 MAC Cross Country Championships. Even though the Eagles placed fifth last season, they have consistently made strides since the 2007 campaign and the team will look to continue to improve this fall. “The team made good progress last year,” said Parks. “We hope to continue that trend this coming fall. It will be exciting to see how the team develops over the course of the season.” After EMU competes at the MAC Championships, the Eagles will close out the 2011 season at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 12 and finally at the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21.

Cross Country and Track and Field Alma Mater - Eastern Michigan, 1980, 1988 Sixth Season at EMU

The 2011 campaign marks the sixth season for Sue Parks as Head Coach of the Eastern Michigan University women’s cross country. Under her tenure, the Eagles have shown vast improvements since beginning her career at the helm in 2006. In 2007, the Eagles finished 11th (286 points) at the Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championships. Jut three seasons later, the Green and White improved to a sixth place finish (157 points) in 2009, and eventually improved to fifth place in 2010 (157 points). Prior to EMU, Parks enjoyed tremendous success in her 12-year tenure at Ball State, winning eight Mid-American Conference titles and finishing runner-up 10 times in track and cross country. She was named MAC Women’s Coach of the Year” five times, in indoor and outdoor track three times, in 1996, 1998, 2001, in outdoor track once, 2000, and in cross country once, in 2003. In addition, she was selected as an NCAA Regional “Coach of the

Year in indoor and outdoor track in 1998. Her 2002 cross country team became just the third MAC team to ever qualify for the NCAA Championship when it accomplished that feat in 2002. From 1990-94 she was an assistant cross country and track coach for both the men’s and women’s programs at the University of Arizona. Her UA women’s cross country squads placed 11th, 14th, and 12th in the NCAA Championships in 1991, 1992 and 1993 respectively and her 1993 cross country team won the NCAA District 8 championship. She was named NCAA District 8 Coach of the Year after the 1993 cross country season. During her tenure at Arizona she coached seven All-Americans in women’s cross country and track, including the 1994 5,000-meter champion in the NCAA indoor track championship. Prior to heading to Arizona, Parks was the head women’s cross country coach and assistant women’s track coach at Michigan State University

from 1988-90. She was graduate assistant coach for the EMU men’s track team from 1987-88. From 1984-87 she was the women’s head cross country coach and women’s assistant track coach at the University of Michigan she coached eight All-Americans in cross country and was selected as Big Ten women’s cross country Coach of the Year in 1986. Her other coaching stints including serving as the head women’s track coach at Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard in 1982 and the head women’s cross country coach at Ann Arbor Huron High School from 1979-83. Parks is certainly no stranger to EMU and the Ypsilanti area. She was raised in Ypsilanti and attended Ypsilanti High School where she was an outstanding cross country and track competitor. She

was a state of Michigan high school champion and former record holder in the 800 meters and also competed on U.S. teams in the Pan American Games. Parks went on to graduate from EMU with a bachelor’s degree in 1980 and a master’s degree in 1988. While an undergraduate, Parks was a Mid-American Conference cross country invitational champion in 1976, 1977 and 1978 and was also an Olympic Trials qualifier. She was elected to the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. Her father, Bob Parks, was the head men’s track and field and head men’s cross country coach at EMU for 34 years, from 1967-2000.

2010 SEASON RECAP

After finishing sixth at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championships, the Eastern Michigan University women’s cross country team entered the 2010 season with hopes of continuing to climb toward the top of the conference. Selected to finish fifth overall in the MAC Preseason poll, the Eagles would kickoff their campaign at the Michigan Open in Dexter, Mich. Then-sophomore Courtney Calka took first at the 5,000-meter event, posting a field-best 17:42.0 finish time. Morgan Churchwell placed 10th and was the second member of the Eagles to complete the event in 18:59.25, while teammates Natalie Webb and Tiffany Kincaid took 13th and 14th place, respectively. After taking a week off from competition, the Green and White ventured to Three Rivers, Mich. for the George Dales Invitational hosted by Western Michigan University. The Eagles collaborated for a first place finish at the 6,000-meter event, paced by Calka’s first place, Pine View Golf Club course record time of 20:48.20. Churchwell finished at 22:08.3, good for a third place finish, while Kincaid took fifth (22:33.5), and Rachel Quaintance claimed sixth place at (22:36.3). On Oct. 2, the Eagles headed to Madison, Wisc. to compete in the prestigious Adidas Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin. As a team, EMU placed 16th in a tough 20-field that included several top-30 ranked opponents. For the third consecutive race, Calka led the way for the Green and White taking 10th in a field of 202 athletes in 20:31.00. Quaintance was the next EMU runner to cross the finish line in the middle of the pack at 22:27, followed by teammates Webb and Kincaid who earned times of 22:30 and 22:33, respectively. At the Michigan Intercollegiate, Calka posted her third first-place finish of the season after completing the

5,000-meter course in a career best 17:16.0 time. Her efforts led to a MAC Runner of the Week honor, representing the first of the season and the second of her young career. Webb recorded her best time of the season and was the next EMU runner to finish at 18:36.1 in for ninth place. She was followed by Quaintance who placed 23rd with a time of 19:04.1. Cassie Coffman and Kincaid finished 32nd and 34th respectively, rounding out the top 35 in a field of 224 runners. The Eagles then traveled to University Park, Pa. to take part in the Penn State National Invitational. Calka continued to impress with her seventh place, 20:52 finish in a considerable field of 304 athletes that included some of the best talent in the country. Churchwell was the next runner for EMU to cross the finish line, taking 70th with a time of 22:22. The Green and White then hosted their annual EMU Classic on Oct. 23 in Dexter, Mich. In the women’s 5,000-meter event, senior Beverly Elcock ran unattached as she worked on her comeback from knee surgery, finishing 43rd with a time of 19:32.9. Teammates Lauren and Brooke Scuillo took 62nd (20:08.1) and 77th (20:51.1), respectively. A week later, the women’s cross country squad arrived at the MAC Championships in Three Rivers, Mich. The Eagles raced to a fifth place finish to improve one spot from last year’s sixth place efforts. Toledo brought home the title with 44 points, while Central Michigan placed second with 67 points. Miami finished third with 69 points and was followed by Ohio (fourth, 89 points). Rounding out the field were Eastern Michigan (fifth, 157 points), Western Michigan (sixth, 159 points), Akron (seventh, 187 points), Bowling Green(eighth, 235 points), Kent State (ninth, 254 points), Ball State (10th, 274 points),

Buffalo (11th, 276 points) and Northern Illinois (12th, 323 points). Calka led the Eagles with a fifth place overall finish this afternoon. Her time of 21:03.9 also helped earn her first team All-MAC accolades, marking the second time in her career that she has received this honor. Churchwell was the next to finish for the Green and White, taking 31st after posting a time of 22:06.6. She was followed by teammate Rachel Quaintance in 33rd place with a time of 22:15.3. Kincaid crossed the finish line at 22:39.6 for 42nd place, while Coffman and Lauren Quaintance finished 46th and 53rd, respectively. Calka and Quaintance would later pick up Academic All-MAC honors for the accomplishments both on the course and in the classroom. Calka later earned All-Region accolades after pacing the Green and White with a 21st place finish. She maintained a mile average pace of 5:44.1 en route to a 21:22.79 total time at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course in Rochester, Mich. She would later earn USTFCCCA AllAcedemic honors as well as CoSida Track and Field and Cross Country Academic All-District Honors.

The Eagles Fly North For Pre-Season Training The Eastern Michigan University womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cross country team headed up to Petoskey, Mich. to prepare for the 2011 season. On August 24, the team made the five-day excursion for camp, which was sponsored in part from funds donated by former EMU menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s distance runner, Dan McClory. The squad trained on the Little Traverse Wheelway and the limestone lined North Central State Trail. The Green and White also participated in some challenging team bonding activities at the Camp Adventure Center.

Eastern Michigan University Where We’re Located

Eastern Michigan University is located in historic Ypsilanti, seven miles east of Ann Arbor, 40 miles west of Detroit and just 20 minutes from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. It is an area rich in academic, research, technological and recreational resources. The University also has sites in Livonia, Jackson, Traverse City, Flint, Detroit and Monroe. EMU’s 800 plus-acre main campus of scenic flora and wooded areas includes 18 miles of walkways and jogging trails and has 122 buildings throughout the academic and athletic campuses. Eagle Crest – Eastern Michigan’s conference center, golf course and resort – is located on the banks of nearby Ford Lake. Recently named “A Cool City,” by Michigan’s Governor Jennifer Granholm, Ypsilanti plays a leading role in industry and education. The city and the University have forged close ties that have lasted 160 years.

What Makes Us Unique

In 1849, with the passage of Act No. 138, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Michigan formally paved the way for the establishment of Michigan State Normal School, with the exclusive purposes of instructing persons in the art of teaching; providing a good common school education; and giving instruction in the mechanic arts, husbandry, agricultural chemistry and the laws of the United States. Since its inception, Eastern Michigan, first as a Normal School, then as a College and finally as a University, has grown and developed to respond to the ever-changing needs of society. Over the years, EMU has educated thousands of sons and daughters of Michigan, the nation, and the world. The University currently serves nearly 22,000 students who are pursuing undergraduate, graduate, specialist, doctoral and certificate degrees in the arts, sciences and professions. In all, more than 200 majors, minors and concentrations are delivered through the University’s Colleges of Arts and Sciences; Business; Education; Health and Human Services; Technology, and its graduate school. Eastern Michigan’s exceptional faculty, students and alumni include CEOs from major businesses; a National Student Teacher of the Year, National Teacher of the Year, numerous Fulbright Scholars and Milken Family Foundation National Educators award winners; and several Michigan Teachers of the Year. Enrollment Profile

With nearly 23,000 students, EMU provides a rich learning environment for the university community. The University currently has approximately 17,000 undergraduates and 5,000 graduate students. Our students represent 45 states and 93 foreign countries. Of undergraduate students, 69 percent are full time and 60 percent are women. The most popular majors are education, business, social sciences and history, science and engineering, English, and the health professions. EMU’s population is approximately 70 percent white; 16 percent black; 3 percent international; 6 percent undeclared; 2.5 percent Asian-American; 2 percent Hispanic and 0.5 percent Native-American. Eastern Michigan offers a number of special academic programs to help students succeed. These include the Honors College; the Holman Learning Center; distance learning; accelerated format programs; online, weekend and evening programs and courses; American Humanics certification; the World College Study Abroad Tours; a specialized master’s degree program for corporations offered on site; a double master’s degree; online technologies for education and training through the Centers for Corporate Training; and EMU Worldwide. With more than 200 academic and social organizations, an extensive intramural sports program, 21 NCAA Division I-A sports and numerous cultural activities from which to choose, EMU students have diverse opportunities to become involved in campus life. Students’ on-campus housing choices range from traditional dormitory-style rooms to apartments and include living/learning center options.

Faculty/Staff

Eastern Michigan University employs 689 full-time faculty and 1,100 staff members. Ninety-four percent of EMU professors have doctoral degrees or terminal degrees in their field. The student to faculty ratio is 19:1. Faculty work closely with students, and many involve students in their research. In 2009, the University celebrated its 29th annual Undergraduate Symposium; a benchmark program for undergraduate research.

Community Outreach

Eastern Michigan is making an impact nationally by channeling its academic research as a means of solving real-world problems. EMU currently has 14 research institutes and centers that focus on community building and civic engagement, quality, community and regional development, small business development, geospatial education, textiles, export assistance and product development. EMU is well known for merging theory and practice for the benefit of the community. Applied research leads to new knowledge, new jobs and new business. Annually, the university receives about $15 million in revenues for sponsored research and community service activities.

The Alumni Association

Representing more than 142,000 alumni and friends, the Alumni Association sponsors social and service-related programs for more than 20 geographically-based and special-interest alumni chapters.

EMU’s Economic Impact

Since its founding in 1849, Eastern Michigan has provided quality services to the residents of Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, the State of Michigan and other states and nations. EMU’s total impact on the Michigan economy of an estimated $3 billion annually reflects a return of more than $30 for each dollar received from the state. The University’s total impact on the Michigan economy results in a contribution of $115 million in state tax revenue. Thus, EMU’s impact on state government tax revenue is $1.25 in taxes for each dollar received from the state.

Our History

When the state of Michigan was just 12 years old, Michigan State Normal School was designated by the state legislature as the first institution to educate teachers to serve the public schools. The University thus began, somewhat humbly, as the sixth teacher education institution in the nation. A campus that today comprises more than 800 acres was once a four-acre plot with one building and two programs of study – a classical course and an English Course. The school’s name has changed several times – to Michigan State Normal College in 1899; to Eastern Michigan College in 1956; and finally to Eastern Michigan University in 1959. During its first 100 years, the institution certified thousands of teachers and developed the broad-based curricula that ultimately prepared it for university status. Within that new university, three colleges emerged: Education, Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School. The University has since expanded three more times; adding the College of Business in 1964, the College of Health and Human Services in 1975 and the College of Technology in 1980. More recently Eastern Michigan has developed Extended Programs that include Continuing Education, the Centers for Corporate Training, the World College and numerous community-focused institutes. The University has enhanced its learning environment through structural initiatives during the past several years. Recent construction includes the Terrestrial and Aquatic Research Facility (1998), the Convocation Center (1998), the Bruce T. Halle Library (1998), the John W. Ypsilanti is a city in Washtenaw County with a population of 22,362. Originally a trading post established in 1809 by Gabriel Godfroy, a FrenchCanadian fur trader from Montreal, a permanent settlement was established on the east side of the Huron River in 1823 by Major Thomas Woodruff. It was incorporated into the Territory of Michigan as the village Woodruff’s Grove. A separate community a short distance away on the west side of the river was established in 1825 under the name “Ypsilanti”, after Demetrius Ypsilanti, a hero in the Greek War of Independence. Woodruff’s Grove changed its name to Ypsilanti in 1829, and the two communities eventually merged. Henry Ford and the automotive industry came to Ypsilanti in the 1930s and beautiful Ford Lake was created to generate hydroelectric power for the manufacturing plants. During World War II, Ypsilanti became home to the Willow Run Bomber Plant, a factory that would employ 100,000 workers.

Our 803-acre campus of scenic flora and wooded areas includes 18 miles of walkways and jogging trails, and has 128 buildings, the Lake House and Rynearson Stadium located on the south side of Huron River. Eagle Crest – our conference center, golf course and resort – is located on the banks of nearby Ford Lake. Most recent additions include the Terrestrial and Aquatic Research Facility (1998); the Convocation Center (1998); the Bruce T. Halle Library (1998); the John W. Porter Building, housing the College of Education (1999); the environmentally sustainable Everett L. Marshall Building, housing the College of Health and Human Services (2000); the renovation of Boone Hall (2000), housing our Extended Programs offices; and The Village (2001), a spacious, apartment-style residence facility. There are currently 11 residence halls and three apartment complexes with 583 units housing more than 4,000 students. The EMU Student Center also opened in November of 2006.

President Susan W. Martin

Dr. Susan W. Martin EMU President Entering her fourth year as the president of Eastern Michigan University, Dr. Susan W. Martin has made a significant impact on the campus in her short time in Ypsilanti. Named the 22nd president of EMU May 14, 2008, she is the first female president in EMU’s 161-year history. Martin officially took office July 7, 2008. Since joining EMU she has led the institution in two consecutive years of enrollment growth, kept tuition, room and board at 0% increase for 2010-11, enhanced the quality of education by investing in hiring new faculty, and enhanced the living and learning facilities by making $195M in capital improvements to the campus. “I am thrilled to be chosen for the honor of leading this great University, which has a strong history of excellent education and a bright future,” said Martin. During her inaugural address Martin set fourth an ambitious vision for the university. The goals included build-

ing on the pillars of academic excellence, refreshing alumni relationships, comprehensive fundraising and earning the public’s trust. Under Martin’s guidance in 2008, EMU was again recognized as a “Best Midwestern College” by The Princeton Review for the sixth straight year. Additionally, for the fifth consecutive year, The Princeton Review recognized Eastern’s College of Business as one of the “Best 296 Business Schools” in the nation. Eastern Michigan also was awarded a 2009 Michigan Historic Preservation Network’s (MHPN) Government/ Institutional Award for its preservation of the University’s core historic campus. Prior to coming to EMU, Martin was the provost and vicechancellor of academic affairs at the University of MichiganDearborn. The majority of Martin’s higher education career was at Grand Valley State University, where she taught and published as a professor of accounting and taxation. Martin served as director of the master of taxation program, director of international business programs, and chair of the accounting and taxa-

tion department. In June 2001, Martin joined the GVSU provost’s office and served in roles as assistant, associate, and executive associate vice president of academic affairs. One of her major duties in that office was to help manage the $154 million budget for the Academic Affairs Division. Before GVSU, Martin was deputy state treasurer for the Bureau of Local Government Services for Michigan from June 1981-June 1984. She also was the commissioner of revenue for the state of Michigan from 1985-1988. Martin received her doctoral degree in accounting from Michigan State University in 1988 and her master’s degree in accounting from MSU in 1976. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University in 1971. In 2009, Martin received the MSU Department of Accounting and Information Systems Alumna of the Year Award. Martin is a member of the boards of directors of the Michigan Educational Trust as well as Ann Arbor SPARK, a nonprofit organization that seeks to bring businesses to the Ann Arbor area. She is married to Dr. Larry Martin, professor of economics at Michigan State University, and has three children and two grandchildren.

The Board of Regents is the governing body of Eastern Michigan University. Its current format was created when the State of Michigan ratified a new constitution, Jan. 6, 1964. The Board comprises eight regents who are appointed to eight-year terms by the governor. The current EMU Regents are Roy Wilbanks, chair; Francine Parker, vice chair; Floyd Clack; Beth Fitzsimmons; Michael Hawks; Mike Morris; Thomas W. Sidlik; and James F. Stapleton. “Other institutions of higher education established by law having authority to grant baccalaureate degrees shall each be governed by a board of control which shall be a body corporate. The board shall have general supervision of the institution and the control and direction of all expenditures from the institution’s funds. It shall, as often as necessary, elect a president of the institution under its supervision. He shall be the principal executive officer of the institution and be ex-officio a member of the board without the right to vote. The board may elect one of its members or may designate the president to preside at board meetings. Board of Regents Roy E. Wilbanks Chair

Roy E. Wilbanks was appointed to the Board of Regents by Governor Jennifer Granholm in December 2004 to fill the seat vacated by Dr. Rosalind E. Griffin for a term ending in December 2012. Wilbanks was employed by Eastern Michigan University in various roles such as: Assistant to the PresRoy E. Wilbanks Chair ident for Government and Community Relations, Vice President for University Relations and Secretary to the Board of Regents, Executive Vice President, Interim Chief Executive Officer and President and Chief Executive Officer of the Eastern Michigan Foundation. In 2004, he was inducted into the Ypsilanti High School Athletic Hall of Fame and, in 2003, he was awarded the John W. Porter Distinguished Service Award. Wilbanks earned a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. Mr. Wilbanks serves as chair of the Athletic Affairs Committee and is a resident of Ypsilanti.

Floyd Clack

Floyd Clack was appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm in June 2005 to fill the seat vacated by Steven G. Gordon, and then reappointed to a full term in January 2007. Clack was a member of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners (District 2) from 1996-2004 and is a former state representative, serving seven terms from 1982 – 1996. He also served Floyd Clack as a member of the Flint City Council from 1979 – 1982 and was a guidance counselor and teacher in the Flint Community Schools. He is a former president of the Flint NAACP. Mr. Clack received a master’s degree in counseling from EMU in 1972. He lives in Flint.

Michael Hawks

Michael Hawks was appointed by Governor Rick Snyder in February 2011 to replace Gary Hawks, whose term had expired. He is appointed for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2018. He is a partner at Lansing firm Governmental Consultant Services Inc. He previously served as chief of staff for the majority floor leader in the Michigan House of Representatives and on the public affairs staff of the Speaker of the House before joining GCSI.

Beth Fitzsimmons

Beth Fitzsimmons was appointed by Governor Rick Snyder in February 2011 to replace Mohamed Okdie, who resigned. She is appointed for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2016. She founded Information Strategists, LLC, which provides information services to high-tech businesses. She served on the Department of Commerce National Technical Information Beth Services Advisory Board and on the School of Information Fitzsimmons and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Board of Visitors. She previously served five years as chair of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science. She is also the president of the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor. She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Simmons College, a master’s degree in library science from the University at Albany, State University of New York, and a doctorate in public policy from George Mason University.

Mike Morris

James F. Stapleton

Jim Stapleton was appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm in January of 2007 to replace Karen Valvo, who resigned. Stapleton was reappointed by Governor Granholm in January 2009 to his own eight-year term that expires December 31, 2016. Stapleton is President and CEO of B&R Consultants. From 2001 through July of 2004 (while James F. continuing to fully own and operate B&R), Stapleton asStapleton sumed the responsibilities of Senior Vice President of Business Affairs of the Detroit Tigers, making him (for a good majority of his tenure) the highest ranking African-American within the business operations of a Major League Baseball franchise. In July of 2004, Stapleton left Major League Baseball to participate in a group that, in June of 2005, purchased the Minnesota Vikings. He is the former president of The Think Twice FouAndation, an organization comprised of African and Jewish American Community Leaders that raised more than $1 million and provided more than 200 units of new and/or refurbished housing for Detroit residents. He is also a past chairman of the Detroit Chapter of the Urban League. Stapleton has also served on several profit and not-for-profit boards, including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Wayne State University’s Shiffman Medical Library Board of Visitors, Ontario Michigan Rail, and the Board of Directors of Detroit Commerce Bank.

Mike Morris

Mike Morris was appointed by Governor Rick Snyder in February 2011 to replace Phil Incarnati, whose term had expired. He is appointed for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2018. He served as a regent from 1997 to 2004, and is an alumnus of EMU, earning both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in biology. Presented with the university’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1995, he is president and chairman of AEP Energy in Ohio. He previously served as president of Consumers Energy.

Thomas W. Sidlik

Thomas W. Sidlik was appointed to the Board of Regents of Eastern Michigan University by Governor Jennifer Granholm in Dec. 2004 to a term expiring in December 2012. He was elected by the Board as EMU’s Vice-Chair from June 2005 to Jan. 2007. In January 2007, he was elected to be the Chair of the EMU Board of Regents, for a term ending in Feb. 2009. He has served as the Chair of the EMU Educational Thomas Sidlik Policies Committee since January 2007. In March 2009 he was appointed to be the Vice Chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee. He is a member of the Finance Policy Committee. In other capacities, he is also a member of the Board of Directors of The Detroit Institute of Arts. Sidlik retired as a member of the Board of Management of DaimlerChrysler AG in Aug. 2007. Sidlik has been Vice-Chairman of the National Minority Supplier Development Council and Chairman of the Council’s Executive Committee. Mr. Sidlik is a resident of Ann Arbor.

Dr. Derrick Gragg

Dr. Derrick Gragg Athletics Director The mark of an exceptional athletics program is the progress that is made each year. And under the leadership of athletics director Dr. Derrick Gragg, the Eastern Michigan University department of athletics has turned in successful campaigns in each of his first five years at the helm. During Gragg’s first year at EMU in 200607, the department set a school and MidAmerican Conference record by capturing a remarkable eight team conference titles, adding a league post-season crown and recording two runner-up finishes. The MAC-record eight team championships eclipsed the mark of six held jointly by Central Michigan University (2003-04) and Western Michigan University (1984-85). In 2007-08, Gragg’s second as athletics director, EMU followed up the record-breaking eight championships in 2006-07 with four league regular-season titles and one MAC Tournament crown and the Eagles secured the Reese Trophy which is awarded annually to the top overall men’s athletics program in the league. Eastern had won the prestigious Reese Trophy three previous times (1987-88, 1990-91 and 1995-96). Gragg was nationally recognized for his leadership in 2008-09, earning the Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) Administrator of the Year Award. He received the award at the BCA National Convention and Expo Awards Banquet, May 29, 2009, in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Eagles won a pair of MAC titles during the 2008-09 campaign in men’s cross country and swimming, while finishing as the runner-up in men’s golf, men’s indoor track, men’s outdoor track, women’s golf and women’s soccer en route to a second place finish in the Reese Trophy standings. Eastern continued to excel in 2009-10 with a trio of MAC team titles, 30 individual MAC Championships and 60 student-athletes named to the All-MAC teams. Gragg also helped spearhead the construction of EMU’s $3.9 million multi-purpose indoor athletic practice facility located near the north end of Rynearson Stadium. The 2010-11 season proved to be another record-setting campaign for EMU Athletics. The women’s outdoor track and field team won in 11 years to go along with the men’s cross country team capturing its 15 MAC crown. The Eagles finished near the top in the battle for the Mid-American Conference all-sports championships. The women’s athletic program turned in third place showing in the race for the Jacoby Trophy, while the men’s athletic program turned in its fifth consecutive top five finish in the battle for the Reese Trophy. Gragg was named EMU’s 11th athletic director, Feb. 21, 2006, after spending the previous six years at the University of Arkansas. In his tenure at Arkansas, Gragg was involved in various areas including: athletic administration, sport program oversight, marketing, sports information, recruitment, budget, student-athlete support, compliance, facilities and game management, fund-raising and research. During his career, Gragg has published several articles and editorials on intercollegiate athletics as well as a nationwide study on sports-related gambling. He is a former member of the NCAA’s Minority Opportunities & Interests Committee, having served as co-chair of the committee in 2004-05. Gragg also served as a member of the Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas Board of Directors and as a member of the American Heart Association, Northwest Arkansas Board of Directors. He currently serves as a member of the NCAA’s Legislative Council and is a member of the NACDA Division I-A Athletic Directors Scholarship Ad Hoc Steering Committee. A former collegiate wide receiver, Gragg lettered four years at Vanderbilt while earning his degree. He graduated with a bachelor’s in human development in 1992 and was a member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll during his senior year. administrator, he coordinated student life and support programs as well as supervising the academic counseling programs for student-athletes. In 1995, Gragg was named director of compliance & operations at the University of Missouri. During his two years in Columbia, he was the game event manager for 10 Olympic sports programs and chairman of the Big 12 Compliance Coordinators Group during his last year as compliance coordinator at the university. Named assistant athletic director for compliance at Michigan in 1997, Gragg spent three years with oversight of the UM compliance department. While serving in Ann Arbor, Gragg also earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Wayne State University. He then served on the faculty at WSU, teaching intercollegiate sport administration and sports marketing classes. During the past three years, he has also served as an adjunct faculty instructor at both WSU and EMU. Gragg earned his doctorate in higher education administration from the U of A in May of 2004 and also taught two undergraduate courses during his tenure there as an athletic administrator. Inducted into the Huntsville-Madison County (Ala.) Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, Gragg is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Black Coaches and Administrators (BCA). Gragg and his wife, Sanya, have a daughter, DeSha, 17, and two sons, Avery, 14, and Phillip-Raymond, 10.

EMU Support Staff Dr. Elizabeth Broughton Faculty Athletics Representative

Dr. Elizabeth Ann (Liz) Broughton, a professor in leadership and counseling at Eastern Michigan University, was named faculty athletics representative at EMU in January 2007. As the faculty athletics representative, Broughton is responsible for reviewing policies and procedures concerning student-athlete welfare, academic integrity and rules compliance. She also serves on the Mid-American Conference’s FAR Infractions Committee. Broughton has been an EMU professor in leadership and

counseling in the College of Education since August 1997. Her duties include instruction of graduate level courses at EMU and serving on the EMU Faculty Council. The 56-year-old Broughton is a native of Morristown, N.J. She went on to complete her bachelor’s degree in 1976 at Rollins (Fla.) College where she was a varsity tennis and basketball player. She earned her master’s degree in counseling at the University of Florida in 1985 and completed her Doctor of Education degree at the University of Florida in 1996. Broughton played professional tennis from 1976-77 before taking over as head women’s tennis coach at the University of Florida from 1978-81.

Erin Burdis

Assistant Athletic Director/Academics

Erin Burdis is in her ninth year as a fulltime member of the Eastern Michigan University athletics department. Burdis joined the EMU staff as a part-time academic counselor in 2001-02 and was elevated to full-time academic counselor and assistant to the director of compliance in October 2002. In the spring of 2004 she took over leadership of the program. As the director of the Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS), Burdis has developed a comprehensive learning assistance program which has led to a very successful departmental GPA and increased graduation rates. Currently the department has a cumulative GPA of 3.060. The main component of the comprehensive program consists of mentor, learning specialist and tutoring meetings that are all individualized. The 34-year-old Burdis joined the EMU athletics staff at the start of the 2001 academic year after serving as a graduate assistant in the

University of Kentucky Athletics Department during 2000-01. She was a support desk coordinator at Booth Newspapers in Ann Arbor from 1997-2000 and prior to that was an intern in the athletics department and assistant girls varsity basketball coach at Taylor Light and Life Christian High School in Taylor, Mich. in 1998. A native of Frankenmuth, Mich., Burdis was an all-state softball player and played on state championships teams in softball and basketball at Frankenmuth High School before graduating in 1994. Burdis then went on to Concordia University in Ann Arbor and was an honorable mention All-American shortstop as a senior and the co-captain of the softball team her final two years. She helped lead Concordia to the National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship in both 1998 and 1999. In addition, the softball team won the Wolverine-Hoosier Conference title in 1997 and 1999 and Burdis was named All-League shortstop and was an All-League All-Academic pick three times (1997, 1998, 1999).

Christopher Hoppe Associate Athletic Director/Compliance

Christopher Hoppe is in his first year as the associate athletic director for compliance for the Eastern Michigan University athletic department. The 32-year-old Hoppe earned two degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is currently working on a third. He completed his undergraduate degree, with honors, in English literature in 2000 and earned his Juris Doctorate in the spring of 2003. Hoppe has also been working on a Ph.D in postsecondary education and leadership at WisconsinMadison.

A native of Rhinelander, Wisc., Hoppe began his professional career as a court commissioner for Oneida and Vilas County Circuit Courts in 2003-04. Upon returning to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2004 for his Ph.D work, Hoppe began his career in collegiate athletics as an athletic compliance intern for the Badgers in 2005-06. In 2006, Hoppe joined the San Diego State University Aztecs as a student-athlete eligibility/student services coordinator. From San Diego State, Hoppe was named the assistant athletics director for compliance and sport supervisor at Robert Morris University in 2008, a post he held until accepting the EMU offer. A member of the state bar of Wisconsin, Hoppe and his wife, Meris, have two children, Austin and Isabelle.

EMU Support Staff Garrett Hotchkiss Academic Counselor

Garrett Hotchkiss is in his fourth year as an Academic Counselor for the athletic department at Eastern Michigan University. Hotchkiss joined the Student Athlete Support Services staff full time in 2007 after spending 2006 as a Compliance Assistant and Learning Specialist within the EMU athletic department. A native of East Lansing, Michigan, Hotchkiss was an honorable mention all-state baseball player, two time team MVP and also played on the soccer team. Hotchkiss then went on to play two years of college soccer at Adrian College where he received MIAA honorable mention both years.

The 33-year-old Hotchkiss earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Central Michigan University in 2001. He completed his master’s degree in sports administration from Xavier University in 2005. Prior to his time here at EMU, Hotchkiss worked as a Research Assistant in the Government Affairs office in Washington D.C. for Corning Incorporated. He also worked as a Game Day Operations Coordinator at the University of Cincinnati and Graduate Assistant for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio, during his time as a graduate student.

Erich Keil

Coordinator of Athletic Equipment and Facilities

Erich Keil is entering his fifth season year as a part of the Eastern Michigan University facilities department. Keil joined the EMU athletics department in December 2007 after working for the University of Michigan department of athletics for 20 years. Keil was responsible for the maintenance of the U-M baseball field that was voted the best college

baseball and softball field in the nation by Turface in 1997. In addition to his work as the EMU director of athletic facilities, Keil has three daughters: Melissa (22), Stephanie (20) and Kristina (16). Melissa is a graduate of the University of Michigan and is a professional figure skating coach , Stephanie is enrolled Michigan State University and Kristina attends Kent Prep School in Connecticut.

Mike Malach Associate Athletic Director

Mike Malach is in his 14th year as a member of the Eastern Michigan University athletics department and his fifth as the director of internal affairs. The 43-year-old Malach joined the EMU staff in September 1998 after a two-year stint as athletics business manager at Southeast Missouri State University. He was responsible for the development and control of the entire athletics budget at Southeast Missouri and he assumed the same responsibilities at Eastern, as well as, overseeing facilities, game operations and sports oversight. A 1990 graduate of Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisc., Malach

went on to earn a master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1992. After completing his M.A., he joined the University of WisconsinStevens Point as an assistant athletics director from 1992-95. Malach then became a systems engineer with Office Technology Company in March 1995 before moving to Cape Girardeau, Mo., as a member of the Southeast Missouri staff in January 1996. A native of Denmark, Wisc., Malach attended Denmark High School and was a member of the 1985 boys basketball team that won the Class B state championship. He also participated in baseball and football as a prep. Malach lives in Milan, Mich. with his wife, Joan, and their son, Brevin (13) and daughter, Elaina (5).

EMU Support Staff Steve Nordwall Director of Sports Medicine

Steve Nordwall is in his 10th year as the director of sports medicine/head athletic trainer for the Eastern Michigan University athletic department. Nordwall joined the EMU staff after spending the previous five years as an assistant trainer for the Kent State University athletic program. At Kent State, Nordwall worked with the entire intercollegiate sports program and held direct responsibilities with the football and men’s basketball teams. He also served as a certified clinical instructor in the athletic training education program. A native of Minnetonka, Minn., Nordwall graduated from Minnehaha Academy in 1986. He went on to complete his undergraduate degree

at North Park College in Chicago, Ill. in 1990, and followed that with his master’s degree at Western Michigan University in 1996. From 1991-94 Nordwall was the head athletic trainer at Triton College in River Grove, Ill. He then moved on to Western Michigan University as a graduate assistant athletic trainer from 1994-96, followed by a position at the University of Notre Dame as an assistant athletic trainer during the 1996-97 season. He joined the Kent State University staff in 1997 as an assistant athletic trainer and remained there until accepting the EMU position. Nordwall is a certified athletic trainer and a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association and the Michigan Athletic Trainers Society.

Dr. Michael Paciorek Faculty Compliance Associate

Dr. Michael Paciorek, a professor of physical education in the EMU College of Health and Human Services joined the Office of Compliance in January 2006 as Faculty Compliance Associate. Paciorek is a 1975 graduate of St. Bonaventure University where he received a B.S. in physical education. He received a Master’s degree in adapted physical education from The George Washington University in 1977 and a Ph.D. from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in 1981. He taught adapted physical education in the Norfolk (Va.) City Schools from 1976-1979, and holds national certification in adapted physical education. Paciorek is known for his work in the field of disability sport having been on the Board of Directors for Special Olympics Michigan for 12 years. He was a member of the United States Disabled Sports Team that competed in the 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona, Spain and worked in classification at the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta. He was on the evaluation team for the 1995 Special Olympic World Games and was Co-Coordinator for disabled athlete participation at the

1990 and 1991 U.S. Olympic Festivals in Minneapolis and Los Angeles respectively. Additionally, he spent 14 years in the United States Army Reserves rising to the rank of Major. Paciorek has written extensively in professional journals and his book “Disability Sports & Recreation is in its Third Edition. Since arriving at Eastern Michigan in 1981 Paciorek was the Physical Education Program Coordinator while teaching classes in adapted physical education, motor learning and development and disability sport. In 1999, he served as the President of the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPER&D). While at EMU he has received the Eastern Michigan University Distinguished Faculty Award for Service in 2000 and the EMU Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award in 1994. Professionally, he has received the MAHPER&D Distinguished Honor Award in 2005; the National Consortium on Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities Outstanding Service Award in 1999; and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance; Adapted Physical Activity Council Professional Recognition Award in 1999. Paciorek and his wife Karen, a professor of early childhood education at EMU have two sons: Clark (26) and Clay (23).

Ann Pierson Academic Counselor

Ann Pierson is in her ninth year as an academic counselor for the athletics department at Eastern Michigan University. Pierson joined the SASS staff after spending six years as an assistant coach for the EMU softball team. Pierson earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation and parks managements with an emphasis in therapeutic recreation from Central Michigan University in 1987. While an undergrad at CMU, Pierson helped CMU win two

Mid-American Conference softball championship (1983 and 1986) and one league basketball title (1982-83). She played on CMU softball teams that qualified for three NCAA regional appearances. A native of Ann Arbor, Pierson lettered in basketball and softball at Gabriel Richard High School. She helped the softball team win the state of Michigan Class D championship as a freshman and senior and was named All-State as a senior. A two-time Class D All-State selection in basketball, Pierson led the team to the Class D state championship game in her final season. Pierson and her son, Brian (17) reside in Ypsilanti.

EMU Support Staff Gregory Pyszczynski Interim Assistant Sports Performance Coach

Greg Pyszczynski, a 2008 graduate of Saint John Fisher College, has joined the Eastern Michigan University Sports Performance Staff as a graduate assistant. The 26-year-old Pyszczynski (12-11-84) joined the EMU Sports Performance Staff in June 2009 as an intern and worked his way into a graduate assistant position. Prior to joining the EMU staff, Pyszcynski was the volunteer head strength and conditioning coach and a graduate assistant football coach at Utica (N.Y.) College in 2008-09. While at Utica, he also supervised the stength and conditioning for the men’s

lacrosse, women’s ice hockey and women’s field hockey teams. In the 2007-08 year he was an assistant strength and conditioning coach and assistant defensive line coach for the football team at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Pyszcynski was the captain of the wrestling and football teams and also played lacrosse at West Seneca East High School. After graduating from high school in 2003, he went on to captain the St. John Fisher College football team while earning first-team Empire 8 All-Conference honors and helping lead the team to two NCAA post-season tournament appearances and a Final Four spot, in 2006.

Dr. Melody Reifel Werner Associate Athletic Director/Senior Women’s Administrator

Dr. Melody Reifel Werner is in her 16th year as a member of the Eastern Michigan University staff. She previously served as the associate athletics director/senior woman administrator, the assistant athletics director for compliance and the coordinator of athletics rules compliance. The 54-year-old Reifel Werner has earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees with honors from Eastern Michigan University. She completed her bachelor’s degree in marketing and communications in 1979 and her master’s in organizational communications in 1998. She was awarded her doctoral degree in educational leadership at EMU in 2006. Reifel Werner is the author of Protecting University Integrity: Managing Risks in Intercollegiate Athletics.

Reifel Werner joined Eastern in 1994 to develop and implement a training program for faculty and staff on the online student information computer system. Reifel Werner previously worked as a training consultant for The Pace Group. Prior to Reifel Werner’s work as a training consultant, she worked as an accounts manager and sales trainer for GTE in both Muskegon, Mich., and Ft. Wayne, Ind. She is a former member of the executive committee of the National Association of Athletics Compliance (NAAC) and the chair of the education committee of the National Association of Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA). Reifel Werner also serves as chair of the NCAA Research Committee. Reifel Werner is married to Thomas Werner and has two grown sons: Thomas Joseph and Anthony John.

Steve Smith Assistant Athletic Trainer

Steve Smith is in his third year with the Eastern Michigan University Sports Medicine Staff. He will serve as the primarily athletic trainer for the men’s basketball team, volleyball and crew teams. A native of Negaunee, Mich., Smith completed his undergraduate education at Northern Michigan University where he earned his

Bachelors of Science Degree in Athletic Training. He went on to receive his Master degree in Public Administration/Health Administration at Grand Valley State University while serving as a graduate assistant working primarily with football and baseball. The 28-year-old Smith is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist as a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association

Assistant Equipment Manager

Wayne Smith is in his third year as a full-time member of the Eastern Michigan University athletics department. Smith joined the EMU staff as an under graduate in 2004-05 and was elevated to full-time in 2008.

The 27-year-old Smith is responsible for the day-to-day equipment needs of the EMU’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and EMU’s Olympic sports teams. Smith is a certified member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA).

Megan Snow Assistant Athletic Trainer

Megan Snow is in her fifth year as an assistant athletic trainer at Eastern Michigan University. She will serve as the primary athletic trainer for the women’s basketball, tennis and soccer teams, while assisting in game-day help with nearly all sports.

The 32-year-old Snow joined the EMU staff after spending the 2006-07 year as an athletic training intern at Michigan State University. She also served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Central Michigan University from 2004-06. A native of Holland, Mich., Snow graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in movement science. She went on to complete her master’s degree in sport administration at Central Michigan University in 2007.

Jay Sofen Equipment Manager

Jay Sofen is in his fifth year at Eastern Michigan University and his second as the head equipment manager. He previously served as EMU’s assistant equipment manager from 2007-08 as well as spending the 200809 season as the acting equipment manager. A 2006 graduate of Eastern Michigan University, Sofen worked for two years in the athletic media relations office before joining the equipment staff for the 2005-06 campaign. The 28-year-old Sofen is responsible for the day-to-day

equipment needs of the football program. He also oversees with the operations with EMU’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and EMU’s Olympic sports teams. A native of Plymouth, Mich., Sofen completed his bachelor’s degree in Public Relations at EMU in 2006. As an undergraduate he served as an operations volunteer at the 2004 and 2005 Mid-American Conference Football Championship games. He also served as an operations volunteer at the 2005 U.S. Open Golf Championship in Pinehurst, N.C. Sofen is a certified member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA).

EMU Support Staff Greg Steiner

Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations

Greg Steiner is in his 11th year with the Eastern Michigan University Athletic Media Relations Office and his seventh as the assistant director. He will serve as the primary contact for the football, women’s basketball, and golf teams, while aiding in game-day help with nearly all 21sports. During his tenure in Ypsilanti, Steiner has promoted two Academic All-Americans, worked with six Mid-American Conference championship teams and instituted an aggressive approach to web development to provide better online coverage of Eagle athletic events. In addition, he has worked as an announcer for Internet radio broadcasts of EMU sporting events, and he was part of the media relations staff at the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Regional and the 2009 Final

Four in Detroit, Mich. The 30-year-old Steiner worked as a student athletic media relations director at Eastern Michigan for three years. A 2003 graduate of EMU, he graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. During his tenure as a student assistant, Steiner was responsible for the development of the athletics department Web site, as well as most of the office’s publications. Steiner worked four years (2001-2005) for WOHL television in Lima, Ohio, as videographer and co-host of “The Friday Night Frenzy” and “The Ottawa Oil Pre-Game Show”, a local high school sports show. He completed an internship at Bluffton University during the summer of 2002, where he assisted with the day-to-day operations of the sports information office. A native of Bluffton, Ohio, Steiner graduated from Bluffton High School in 1999. He is a member of the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the MAC News Media Association (MNMA).

Jim Streeter Associate Athletic Director

Jim Streeter is in his 37th year with the Eastern Michigan University Athletic Media Realtions Office, 36 of them as the director. A 2004 inductee into the EMU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004, the 62-year-old Streeter earned a bachelor’s degree from EMU in Dec. 1973, with a major in physical education and minors in journalism and history. He was sports editor of the student newspaper, The Eastern Echo, for two years. After serving a two-year stint as a sportswriter for The Ypsilanti Press, Streeter joined EMU as an assistant sports information director in 1974. He was named SID in August 1975. Streeter is a member of the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and was a member of the publications committee

for four years. He was the secretary of the Detroit Sports Broadcasters and Writers Association (DSBWA) from 1990-94 after serving as vice president for one year. Additionally, in 2007 he received the honor of “Best of the Best” from the DSBWA. Streeter was selected as one of nine Media Marshals for the 2004 Ryder Cup Golf competition at Oakland Hills Country Club. In addition, he was part of the media relations staff at the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Regional and the 2009 Final Four in Detroit, Mich. A native of Albion, Mich., Streeter graduated from Albion High School in 1966. He earned two varsity letters in baseball and two in basketball at Albion High. He served as president of the Varsity Club his senior year and vice-president of the junior and senior classes. Streeter and his wife, Mary, live in Ypsilanti and have three sons: Andrew (33), twins Michael and David (31), two granddaughters, Isabel (11) and Annaliese (7) and one grandson, Avery (4).

Bill Tuscany

Associate Head Athletic Trainer

Bill Tuscany is in his 26th year as a member of the Eastern Michigan University sports medicine staff, having been promoted to associate head athletic trainer in September 2001. In addition, Tuscany serves as a lecturer and clinical instructor in EMU’s accredited athletic training curriculum. A 1973 Eastern Michigan University graduate, Tuscany earned his master’s degree from EMU in 1976.

Before joining the EMU athletics department, Tuscany was the head athletics trainer at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., from 1976-86. In addition to his training duties at Lewis, Tuscany was the director of the Emergency Medical Service, an associate professor in physical education and from 1981-86 he was the chairman of the physical education department. Tuscany is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). The 60-year-old Tuscany and his wife, Carol, have a daughter, Sarah (29).

EMU Support Staff Blair Wagner

Interim Head Sports Performance Coach Blair Wagner is entering his second year at Eastern Michigan University, and the first as the interim head sports performance coach. An assistant strength and conditioning coach at The Citadel for the past three years, the 25-year-old Wagner worked directly with the basketball and wrestling programs, while assisting with the Bulldogs football and baseball teams. He was first appointed in December 2007 after spending the fall with the College of Charleston in a similar position. While with the Cougars, he was responsible for the men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming and men’s and women’s track and field teams. In addition, he assisted with men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball.

In October 2007, Wagner had the privilege of assisting with the training of the NBA’s New York Knicks during their preseason camp. Prior to arriving in Charleston, S.C., Wagner spent a short time as a volunteer strength coach at the University of Nebraska Kearney. Wagner attended the University of Wyoming and obtained his bachelor’s degree in exercise science in kinesiology while working primarily with the UW Football and strength and conditioning programs. Blair is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and sports performance coach certified through the United States Weightlifting Association. A native of Cheyenne, Wyo., Wagner recently completed his master’s degree in exercise science from The Citadel Graduate College in May 2010.

Recruiting Do's And Don'ts Only EMU coaches may be involved in the recruiting process. Boosters may not make any recruiting contacts with prospective studentathletes, Boosters are prohibited from the following: • Do not telephone, write or make in-person contact with a prospect for recruiting purposes • Do not contact a prospect's coach, principal or counselor in an attempt to evaluate the prospect • Do not become involved in making arrangements for a prospect, the prospect's relatives or friends to receive money or financial aid of any kind • Do not visit a prospect's school to acquire films or transcripts in an attempt to evaluate the prospect's academic or athletics eligibility • Do not have contact with a prospect, their relatives or friends during any of their visits to EMU's campus • Do not contact student-athletes enrolled in other four-year institutions regarding the possibility of transferring to EMU Even though there are many rules prohibiting your involvement with prospects and the recruiting process, as a booster you are permitted to do the following: • Notify EMU coaching staff about noteworthy prospects in your area, • Attend a prospect's athletics event on your own initiative, provided no contact with the prospect, the prospect's parents or coach occurs, • Continue existing friendships, provided solicitation of a prospect's enrollment does not occur.

The existence of a successful compliance program depends on the willingness of coaches, administrators, staff, student-athletes and boosters to be cognizant of NCAA, MAC and institutional rules. WHAT IS COMPLIANCE? At Eastern Michigan University, the Office of Compliance works within the department of athletics and the University to ensure EMU's compliance with all applicable NCAA, MAC and institutional rules. In doing so, the compliance office is charged with the following tasks: • Educating administrators, coaches, staff, prospective student-athletes, current student-athletes and boosters about NCAA, MAC and institutional rules; • Developing monitoring systems to ensure compliance with NCAA, MAC and institutional rules (e.g., recruiting, academic eligibility, financial aid, awards and benefits, amateurism and agents); • Investigating and reporting violations of NCAA, MAC and institutional rules. ARE YOU A BOOSTER? You are a booster if you are or ever have: • Been a member of a booster organization that supports EMU athletics (e.g., EMU Athletic Club, E-Gridiron Group); • Made any financial contributions to the athletics department; • Been involved in promoting EMU's athletics program; • Been a season ticket holder; or • Provided benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their relatives or friends. You can become a booster if you provide benefits to prospects, student-athletes, their relatives or friends and any of the following statements are true: • The relationship between the athlete (or parents of the athlete) and the individual providing the benefits developed as a result of the athlete's participation in athletics or their reputation as an athlete; • The relationship began only after the athlete become a prospect; • The relationship began only after the athlete had achieved notoriety due to his or her athletic ability or reputation; • The pattern of benefits increased after the athlete attained notoriety as a talented athlete.

ONCE A BOOSTER ALWAYS A BOOSTER. Once an individual is identified as a booster, the person retains that identity forever! This is true even if the individual no longer contributes to, or is involved with, EMU's athletics program. WHO IS A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE? A prospective student-athlete (prospect) is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade, students enrolled in preparatory schools and two-year colleges are also considered prospects. An individual remains a prospect even after he/she signs a National Letter of Intent. WHAT IS AN EXTRA BENEFIT? An extra benefit is any special arrangement by a EMU employee or booster to provide a prospect, student-athlete or their relatives or friends a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA. Examples of impermissible benefits include, but are not limited to, the following: • Gifts of cash, clothing, equipment or any other tangible item; • A special discount, payment arrangement or credit on any purchase or service; • Loan of money or co-signing of loans; • A vehicle, use of a vehicle, or any transportation expenses; • Free or reduced-cost services, purchases or rentals; • Entertainment on- or off-campus; or • Free or reduced-cost rent or housing. WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES? EMU is responsible for the actions of its boosters. If a booster provides an impermissible benefit to a prospect, student-athlete, their relatives or friends, EMU may be subject to penalties from the NCAA and Mid-American Conference. When a violation occurs, regardless of intention, it can: • Jeopardize the eligibility of prospective and current student-athletes; • Result in the EMU athletics program being penalized by the NCAA and/or the MidAmerican Conference; and • Cause you to lose benefits or privileges associated with the athletics department (i.e., booster club membership, ticket privileges).
