Space Syntax and GIS of Mobility Spaces Introduction The course is organized in 10 sessions with lectures, exercises, and workshops. A set of tools and their degree of operationability will be presented during the lectures and students will test them out in the exercises and workshops parts. Additionally, students will closely interact with a reflexive attitude when using these tools in the planning and design process in the studio part.

be introduced to the world of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which allows for large amount of data to be displayed visually and located in spatial terms (global positioning, if data allows). Tools and methods of analysis on urban morphology will be combined with the added dimension of socio-economic data, lending itself to identification of socio-spatial organizational patterns and principles. Special emphasis will be placed on tools that allow for mobility analysis present in the GIS programs. In addition, students will be shown how to combine both Space Syntax and GIS for more comprehensive analysis.

Teaching aims The aim of technology-based course is to underpin strategic design scenarios through using and developing representation and evaluation models. Likewise, the representation and evaluation models will be used to support the decision making process in a transparent, scientific, accurate, accelerated and flexible manner. At the end of the semester students will be able to propose own ideas on how to approach problems during planning and design process through scientific grounded tools.

Assignment

Content The technology course consists of two parts. The first part is about carrying out spatial configurative analyses with the Space-Syntax method in order to understand the dynamic spatialsociety relation in built environments. Students will learn how to use this technology based tool to analyse the physical mobility network of built environments and its impacts on human behaviour, indicating socio-spatial problems in a systematic way. Moreover, identification of spatial potentialities for supporting future spatial intervention will be investigated. All lines analysis of a local area in Gouda. The use of Space Syntax in the design studio will strengthen the objective of the first part of the design studio consisting in exploring some extreme scenarios, while the second part of studio will focus on how GIS can be used in research and project interventions for spatial analysis related

research part, alternative solution part and evaluation of ones design proposal part. The first two parts will be done in groups of 3-4 people, while the last part will be individual. An assignment text will be given in the introduction lecture.

At the end of the semester the students must submit a report where they show the application of space syntax and GIS in their projects. In the report a demonstration and discussion of the analysis of the design proposals before and after proposed interventions must be carried out. Since students get input and evaluations during the workshops nd exercises, students must also discuss and reflect upon the results from their findings in the report. Finally, the students must be able to write critically about the method´s limitations and possibilities in relationship to the evaluation of their proposed model. Evaluation The students will be evaluated on the following criteria: • Ability to apply the methods on their design projects • Ability to use the method critically and to be aware of its possibilities and limitations • Ability to evaluate their own design proposals critically Assistance

Akkelies van Nes and Wendy Tan will lead the seminars and provide assistance for the students in exploring various possibilities to modelling some part of their design and projects.
