“Random Attempts” at EMU

Directors of the short film “Random Attempts” Vasvi Çiftçioğlu and Doğuş Özokutan took part in the talk titled “Short Film Production with a Low Budget” along with Cinematographer Peter Verburg at the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU). The organization took place at the Communication Faculty at 14:00 on the 8th of November 2017 and was attended by students, research assistants and academicians. The opening speech of the talk was delivered by EMU Cinema and Televisiom Department Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahire Özad. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özad thanked Çiftçioğlu, Özokutan and Verburg expressing her satisfaction regarding hosting them at the university. Özokutan started the talk by highlighting the importance of being planned when producing low budget short films stating: Whether you are the director or the cinematographer

you need to pay attention to even the smallest of detail. Because re-filming requires expenses. Therefore plans must include even the smallest of details.” The following parts stood out from Özokutan’s talk: “The story is more important than anything else” Pointing out that it is not only the equipment used that makes a film good or bad Özokutan stated: “The story is more important than anything else. It is not possbile to make a good film from a bad story but it is possible to correct bad light.” Also indicating that the film with the lowest budget apart from theirs at the festivals they attended had a budget of apprioximately 100 thousand euros Özokutan indicated that they filmed international award winning “Random Attempts” with a 30 thousand lira bank lone. “‘Random Attempts’ is the first and only Turkish Cypriot film to compete

with the aim of being an Oscar nominee” Çiftcioğlu who started by defining themselves as independent film-makers went on to say “We normally film documentaries. ‘Random Attempts” was our first short film. Up until now it has has been screened at 42 festivals in 23 different countries. It has picked up 3 international awards; 2 from the USA and one from Brazil. It is the first and only Turkish Cypriot film to compete with the aim of becoming an Oscar nominee.” “Filming fictional short films isn’t easy” Pointing out that there are differences between filming a documentary and a short film Çiftçioğlu stated “Filming fictional short films isn’t easy. Unlike when filming a documentary, when filming a fictional short film you need to pay attention to factors like light, sound and acting.” Also touching upon

the difficulties of having to follow a pre-written script Çiftçioğlu noted that documentary films are more sponteneous. “Light is very important” Showing examples of use of light Cinematographer Verburg noted: “Light is very important. If you don’t use it correctly the image you want to portray and the atmosphere you want to create may not be obtained. Light allows you to relay the feelings you want to relay, it is very important just like sound. During the presentation in which he introduced the types of light and filming equipment Verburg provided an analogy of a carpenter. Just like it is important for a carpenter to work with his own hammer, it is important for a good cinematographer to work with a camera he is used to and knows well. The organization came to an end after a question and answer session.

EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty Marks Organ Donation Week Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty Academic Members and Marmara University Pendik Education and Research Hospital Organ Transplantation Coordinators Deniz Birtan, Fatma Başyiğit Uçar and Uğur Özdemir made statements on the occasion of Organ Donation Week (3 - 9 November). Statements touched on the following: What is Organ Donation? Giving authorisation to transfer one’s organs to another individual after death is called organ donation. Who can Donate? An individual should be older than 18 in order to be able to donate. Moreover, the person should verbally state his/her wish to donate in front of two witnesses; also the procedure should be confirmed by a doctor. Donating organs in return of money is prohibited by law. Being an elder, having health problems, consuming cigarettes and alcohol does not prevent one to donate organs. Which Organs can be Donated? Each healthy organ can be donated. Organs such as heart, lung, kidney, liver, pancreas, small intestine, face, hand, arm and leg or tissues such as cardiac calve, cornea, bone marrow, cartilage, muscle,

tendon are successfully transplanted in our country. It should not be forgotten that everyone can be in need of organs. What to do if You Decide to Donate Your Organs? Organ Donations can be done in health departments, hospitals and centres/institutions offering organ donations procedures. It is significant that the individual considering organ donation informs his/her family about the procedure in order not to face any difficulties during the donation process. Therefore, while filling in the organ donation form the individual should provide information regarding a relative or a loved one. After the form is submitted, the ministry will send a message the mentioned relative informing them about the individual’s decision on organ donation. People who are organ donors should always carry their organ donor cards with themselves so that there won’t be any misunderstandings or delays in an event of donation. If a donor changes mind and decides not to be a donor, s/ he should immediately stop carrying the donor card and should inform her/ his family on the issue. The donor can also go to an Organ Donation Unit and state that s/he changed her/his mind.

View of Directorate of Religious Affairs on Organ Donation Directorate of Religious Affairs has reported that organ donation is acceptable in the religion as well (06.03.1980 / 396113). What is Organ Transplantation? Organ transplantation is the process of transferring a healthy organ from a living person, a person whose brain death has happened, or from a dead person to replace an unhealthy or mal-functioning tissue-organ. Organ transplantation plays a vital role in both medical and socials aspects for patients who are terminally ill because of organ failure. For organ donations, donor can be alive or dead (patients with brain death as well). %7580 of organ donors are cadavers and %20 -25 are living individuals in developed countries. However, in our country the percentages are the other way around but the amount of cadaver donors are increasing each day. The highest rate of donors around the world is in Spain with 40.2 in one million whereas the rate in Turkey is 6 in one million. Only kidney and liver plantations can be done with living donors. Therefore, cadaver donors have highly important for donations of other tissues and organs. You can give life to many people by donating your organs. Each donation is a new life.

leukemia cases in adolescence and people in their 20s as well as 20 percent of leukemia cases in adults.

Childhood leukemia is more common than other types of cancer. Both genetic and environmental factors are thought to play an important part in leukemia.

Chronic Leukemia: It is characterized by the excess production of blood cells that appear to be mature but cannot do what normal blood cells do. It spreads slowly and has two main subcategories:

smears and examples taken from bone marrow. Symptoms of Leukemia:

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty academic staff member and Marmara University Medicine Faculty Department of Pediatrics and Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Chair Prof. Dr. Gülnur Tokuç released a statement regarding 2-8 November Children with Leukemia Week. The statement on Childhood Leukemia reads as follows: Leukemia is a type of cancer where bone marrow cells, especially abnormal white blood cells divide uncontrollably. The high amount of abnormal cells take the place of normal bone marrow cells. Therefore the number of platelets that play a part in blood clotting and normal white blood cells that are needed for

Acute Leukemia: There is a constant increase in blood cells with cancer and their number surpasses the amount of healthy-normal blood cells. These abnormal cells can spread to other organs. The classification of acute leukemia is based on the types of abnormal cells that appear. Acute Lymphoid Leukemia (ALL): In acute leukemia, the bone marrow cells cannot mature properly into lymphocytes. Immature leukemia cells called lymphoblasts continue to reproduce and build up. The number of lymphoblasts increase accumulating at lymph nodes and causing swelling. ALL is the most common type of childhood leukemia and makes up approximately 80 percent of leukemia cases in those under the age of 15. It is sometimes seen in adults but very rare in those over the age of 50. Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML): It emerges when myoblast cells that need to turn into normal blood cells increase. It makes up 50 percent of

Chronic Lymphoid Leukemia (CLL): CLL is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes too many lymphocytes that are abnormal because they haven’t fully matured and unlike normal lymphocytes cannot protect our body against infection. With CLL, cancer cells are found in the bone marrow, blood and adenoids. Swelling occurs in the lymph nodes. CLL is responsible of 30 percent of all leukemia cases. It is rare under the age of 30 but its frequency increases with age and is most common between 60 and 70.

• Fatigue, exhaustion • Colds and similar complaints • Loss of appetite and weight • Frequent infection • Bruising and small red-purple spots on skin • Swelling lymph nodes • Paleness • Bleeding in the nose and gums • Pain in the bone or joints Treatment Chemotherapy is the most common treatment method of childhood leukemia. Stem cell transplantation may be needed in certain cases such as when there is no response to treatment or when leukemia is recurring. Stem cells are undifferentiated blood cells collected from the donor’s bone marrow. They are either taken from the patient before his/her treatment or from somebody else with tissue
