Total Number of EMU Alumni Reaches 50000 with the Recent Graduation of 2000 Students
Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) 2016-2017 Academic Year Spring Term Spring Semester Convocation Ceremony for Associate and Undergraduate Program graduates took place on Tuesday, the 20th of June 2017. Around 2000 associate and undergraduate program graduates received their diplomas at the convocation ceremony which took place at the EMU Stadium. With the graduation of the said students, the total number of EMU alumni has reached 50000. Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Mustafa Akıncı, TRNC Parlimentary Spokesperson Dr. Sibel Siber, Minister of Labour and Social Security Hamza Ersan Saner and parliamentary members were amongst the notable names present at the ceremony. The night came to an end by the concert by Göksel.
President Mustafa Akıncı In his short speech, President Mustafa Akıncı addressed the graduates in a joyful manner and stated that they are waiting for the speeches to end, start to receive their diplomas, throw their caps in the air and cannot wait for the concert to begin. President Akıncı congratulated the graduates and wished them good luck with their new lives. President Akıncı also congratulated the EMU Administration and academicians for their efforts on educating the graduates, and their families for their endless support. President Akıncı concluded his speech with the following words: “Do not forget your university, this beautiful country and it’s people. Here exists a Turkish Cypriot community that always loves you and will show the same
warmth to you anytime you visit this country. In the name of my community, I send their love to you and wish you all good luck.” TRNC Parlimentary Spokesperson Dr. Sibel Siber TRNC Parlimentary Spokesperson Dr. Sibel Siber stated that the Turkish Cypriot community is in need of success stories that would strengthen the self-confidence and bonds of the public. Underlining that success stories gain even more meaning under isolation and embargoes, Dr. Siber mentioned that EMU is one of the institutional success stories. Dr. Siber said that universities are like the windows to the world and, at the same time, very strong sources of motivation.
Dr. Siber underlined the importance of the government to pave the way for the universities. Meanwhile stating that universities should be autonomous, Dr. Siber commented that the current state of this subject is not at a desired position. EMU Board of Trustees’ President İlker Edip EMU Board of Trustees’ President İlker Edip stated that EMU is a 39-year old success story and they are proud with their students and graduates from 114 different countries. Edip mentioned that EMU graduates are the TRNC’s and EMU’s representatives and thanked the governments of Turkey and TRNC, academicians and families of the students for their contributions towards EMU’s >>P.2,3,4,5 development.

Rector of EMU Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam Rector of EMU Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam started his speech by offering his deepest condolences to the ones who lost their lives at the fire disasters in England and Portugal. Prof. Dr. Osam underlined that the students are graduating from one of the most respected universities in the world that provides high quality education as also
confirmed at international levels. Prof. Dr. Osam mentioned that the graduating students are equipped with special qualities allowing them to embrace universal values, see differences as our wealth and acting in line with the rule of law. Underlining that EMU gives great value to research and development, Prof. Dr. Osam added that papers of 284 academicians were published in international journals and a total 3095
academicians were cited in 2017. Prof. Dr. Osam said that EMU will do anything possible to ensure the provision of high quality education. Mirza Özahi EMU graduates Mirza Özahi and Aysel Amir gave speeches in Turkish and English, also participating at the symbolic tree planting ceremony in the
name of the 2016-2017 Spring Term Graduates. After the protocol speeches; top faculty, school and department students received their diplomas from the members of the protocol. After associate and undergraduate students were presented their diplomas, students and their families had joyous moments at a concert by the popular Turkish singer Göksel.

EMU Presents Diplomas to Doctoral and Master’s Degree Graduates
Eastern Mediterranean University 20162017 Academic Year Spring Semester Graduate Programs Convocation Ceremony took place at Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, 18 June 2017. Different from previous years, this year master’s and doctoral degree program graduates received their diplomas at a separate ceremony, which was broadcast live via EMU TV. Boasting over 20000 students from 106 countries, EMU lives the excitement of graduating around 2000 students. Among those in attendance were TRNC Ministry of Health Undersecretary Kemal Deniz Dana, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam, Member of EMU Board of Trustees Recai Ergün, Vice Rectors, around 260 graduates and their families, members of the EMU Senate and academic staff members. Having commenced with the entrance of the 2016 – 2017 Academic Year Spring Semester master’s and doctoral degree graduates to the ceremony venue with music and applause, the ceremony continued with a moment of silence and the national anthem followed by a guitar
and flute performance of İbrahim Çetiner and Münevver Sakar. Then, on behalf of the master’s program graduates, EMU Communication Faculty Digital Media and Film Studies Master’s Program graduate Chinedu Emmanuel Ayinotu delivered a speech. Stating that Cyprus is the only place he has traveled to so far, Ayinotu told the audience that he had never left his country, Nigeria, until then. Adding that when he first arrived in Cyprus he thought he would have adaptation problems, but due to the warm environment EMU provided upon his arrival, he experienced no problems at all. Ayinotu also added that EMU hosts students from 106 different cultures which gave him the unique opportunity to meet different individuals from different cultures. Expressing his appreciation and gratitude towards his family, friends and instructors, Ayinotu added that the education he received in his department has been a privilege for him. At the end of his speech, Ayinotu surprised the audience as he sang ABBA’s song “I have a dream”.
EMU Architecture Faculty Doctoral Degree graduate Cemaliye Eken also delivered a speech during the ceremony. Thanking all families present at the ceremony for their support towards their sons’/daughters’ success, Cemaliye Eken stated that they will use the information, skills and talents they gained in EMU to tackle problems at all levels. At the end of her speech, Eken thanked all families, friends and instructors who have contributed towards their graduation. Prof. Dr. Osam: “As the ambassadors of EMU, you will shape the world” In his address during the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam extended his best wishes to all those in attendance on the occasion of Father’s Day and Ramadan. Expressing his pleasure in hosting graduates, their families and academicians at Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center, Prof. Dr. Osam added that graduates of postgraduate programs will shape the world as the ambassadors of EMU. Prof. Dr. Osam also recommended all graduates to continue with their academic studies. Expressing his pride
regarding the appearance of EMU within the top 980 universities on the Times Higher Education 2017 World University Rankings, Prof. Dr. Osam added that during 2017, a total of 284 publications have been produced in EMU and 3095 attributions have been made from EMU academic staff members’ work. The 2016-2017 Academic Year Spring Semester Postgraduate Programs Graduation Ceremony continued with the presentation of diplomas to graduating students by the TRNC Ministry of Health Undersecretary Kemal Deniz Dana, Member of EMU Board of Trustees Recai Ergün, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam, Director of EMU Institute for Graduate Studies and Research Prof. Dr. Mustafa Tümer, Assistant Director of EMU Institute for Graduate Studies and Research Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Hakan Ulusoy and EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences Founding Dean Prof. Dr. Ayhan Bilsel. The ceremony ended with the graduates throwing their caps in the air.

EMU Organized a Special Reception For Spring Term Graduates and Their Families
As part of the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) 2016-2017 Academic Year Spring Semester Graduation Week activities, a Graduation Reception was held at the poolside of the Rector’s Office at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, the 18th of June 2017. Among those in attendance were graduates and families, President of EMU Board of Trustees İlker Edip, members of the Board of Trustees, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam, Vice Rectors, Rector’s Office Coordinators, administrative directors
and academicians. The reception commenced with the screening of EMU 2017 Promotional Film. The families shared the joy of the graduates by the poolside. EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and Vice Rectors visited all the tables one by one, congratulated the families on their children’s graduation and took photos with them. The students and families showed great interest towards EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam as they constantly visited Prof. Dr. Osam’s table
and took ‘selfies’ with him. In his speech, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam stated that he is very happy and proud to be present in this beautiful organization, mentioning that EMU is in a week of honor. Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam said that they are also graduating new researchers who have completed their postgraduate studies with great success. Underlining that EMU pays special importance towards high quality and social values, Prof. Dr. Osam addressed the families of the
graduates by thanking them for trusting EMU regarding their children’s studies. After the Rector’s speech, EMU Faculty of Education, Fine Arts Education Department, Music Teaching Program student Çağdaş Aydaş and his band gave a musical performance. The second music band in the reception was Group INKA. Towards the end of the reception, EMU 2016-2017 Academic Year Spring Term Graduation Ceremony Cake was also cut.

EMU Honors Members Of Alumni on The 25th Anniversary of their Graduation
Organised by Eastern Mediterranean University Alumni Communications and Career Research Directorate (EMU - MİKA), an honorary night for the members of alumni who have reached the 25th anniversary of their graduation took place at EMU Beach Club at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, 17 June 2017. Among those in attendance were Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Özkaramanlı, Vice Rector for International Relations and Promotion Prof. Dr. Cem Tanova, Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Muhammet Yaşar Özden, Vice Rector for Administrative and Technical Affairs Prof. Dr. Özgür Eren, Rector’s Coordinator Assist. Prof. Dr. Arif Akkeleş, Director of EMU - MİKA Derviş Ekşici, around 80 graduates who have reached the 25th anniversary of their graduation, and about 25 academic staff members from their period of graduation. Commencing with the screening of EMU 2017 Promotional Video, the organization continued with opening addresses. In his opening address, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam stated that since the first day of its foundation, EMU has taken firm steps towards its targets in line with its mission and vision. Adding that today’s achievements are accomplished with the current and past efforts of the present and former administrations, Prof. Dr. Osam put forth that they work selflessly to take the university to further successes. Prof. Dr. Osam also highlighted how EMU invests on quality and added that the university boasts around 100 programs, almost all of which have gained the accreditation of reputable international organisations. At the end of his speech, Prof. Dr. Osam thanked all participating graduates and academicians for their
attendance. Former Director of the Institute of Higher Technology Prof. Dr. Erzat Erdil also delivered a speech in which he provided information about the history of the university. Stating that the success of graduates is a good indicator of the success of an educational institution, Prof. Dr. Erdil added that Eastern Mediterranean University has become an important institution of higher education contributing to the community and country’s economy with over 1000 members of the academic staff. Prof. Dr. Erdil concluded his speech by stating his pleasure in observing the increasing number of EMU graduates working at senior positions all over the world. Following Prof. Dr. Erdil, EMU Alumni Association Chair Ekrem Soyşen expressed his happiness in being together with the graduates celebrating the 25th anniversary of their graduation. Providing information on the aims and targets of the association, Soyşen thanked EMU Rector’s Office and EMU MIKA for the organisation of the event.
EMU Tourism and Hospitality Associate Program 1992 graduate and İstanbul UBC Global Textile Managing Partner Banu Üner also delivered a speech in which she thanked all academic staff of EMU who equipped them with high quality academic information in EMU. EMU Engineering Faculty, Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department 1992 graduate and TRNC Civil Aviation Department Director Mustafa Sofi stated that 25 years have passed following their graduation and that they have benefited from the information, skills and talents instilled to them by EMU during the course of this period. Putting forth that it is due to EMU’s contributions that they have successful careers, Sofi expressed his best wishes to all members of EMU. EMU Business and Economics Faculty 1992 graduate, Cyprus Turkish Milk Producers’ Association Chair and Vice Chair of the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry Candan Avunduk delivered a speech and stated that in 1986, EMU
had five buildings and now, it has become one of the top institutions of higher education recognised both in Turkey and worldwide. Avunduk also thanked all academic staff for their devoted efforts in transforming them into successful professionals. Graduate of EMU and Director of Sabuncuoğlu PR Consultancy and Communication Agency Mahiye Sabuncuoğlu stated that EMU is an institution where they experienced the firsts in their lives. Highlighting the existing solidarity and friendship in EMU, Sabuncuoğlu thanked all academicians and event organisers for their contributions. Following the speeches, gifts and medals were presented to academicians and graduates celebrating their 25th anniversary. Following a group photo, participants spent joyful moments with the live music performance of EMU students Latih Al-Shaikh, Zack Douamna and Behzad Heidarshinas.

EMU 2016 – 2017 Academic Year Graduates Bid Farewell to the City Through a Torchlight Procession Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) 2016-2017 Academic Year Spring Term graduates bid farewell to the city through a Torchlight Procession which took place at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, 19 June 2017. Around 2 thousand graduates were present at the procession in their gowns. EMU 2016-2017 Academic Year Spring Term graduates, academicians administrative staff members, students and families started the procession with torchlights at Famagusta Improvement Academy and walked to the EMU Atatürk Square. Singing songs during the walk, the graduating students bid farewell to the city of Famagusta and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The procession took one hour approximately and welcomed the participation of EMU Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Özkaramanlı, Prof. Dr. Cem Tanova, Prof. Dr. M. Yaşar Özden and Prof. Dr. Özgür Eren. Upon the completion of the procession, the group continued with the graduation celebrations at the Square.

EMU Health Sciences Faculty Organised an Oath Ceremony for New Graduates Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Health Sciences Faculty organised an oath ceremony for the graduates of the 2016 - 2017 Academic Year Spring Semester. During the ceremony which took place at Rauf Raif Denktas Culture and Congress Centre at 10:00 a.m. on 19 June 2017, 469 associate and 210 undergraduate program graduates recited their medical oaths. The oath ceremony commenced with a moment of silence and the national anthem followed by the dance performances of Special Education Students. Speaking at the opening ceremony, EMU Health Sciences Faculty Student Representative Emre Öztoprak put forth that the graduation and oath ceremony are both the first step taken towards their professional careers. Thanking all the academic staff members of EMU for their contributions and support throughout their studies, Oztoprak concluded his words by stating that their main aim is to protect EMU’s identity whilst contributing to the health sector. “Let Humanity be your Primary Goal” EMU Health Sciences Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoc delivered a speech at the opening ceremony and provided information about the faculty. Stressing that the new graduates are taking their first steps towards their prospective careers, Prof. Dr. Malkoc expressed her wishes as follows: “Let humanity be your main goal; your attitude and your professional liabilities are far more significant than your titles. You are now a part of the health team, I congratulate you all as my colleagues.” “Depend Upon Your Oath” Delivering a speech on behalf of the university, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam stated that Health Sciences Faculty has obtained considerable achievements since its establishment. Putting forth the developments and achievements of EMU since it was founded in 1979 as the High Technology Institute, Prof. Dr. Osam stated that EMU has taken its place in the world
lists and is the first university ever in the TRNC to appear on the Times Higher Education list. Prof. Dr. Osam advised all graduates to depend upon their oaths in order to become successful in their prospective careers and went on to highlight the importance of trust and compassion that can be demonstrated
