My team and I were tasked with repurposing the Park Fair Mall building in Des Moines, Iowa into an modern and innovative continuing care retirement community.

Our client base includes older adults who identify with the LGBTQ+ community, as well as those who are allies and seek an uplifting, community-centric, hate-free environment.

This project was developed in collaboration with my two teammates, Joey Miller, and Brianna Nelson

The purpose of this design is to provide a home for LGBTQ+ elders to age in place in an area where they will be accepted and safe. This space will reflect their specific needs as LBGTQ+ older adults while ensuring inclusion, and supporting diversity and equality for all.

The new Stonewall Estates will take advantage of the site‘s existing architecture, bring in additional natural lighting, and utilize a combination of vintage and contemporary furnishings and accessories to attain a comfortable and timeless atmosphere.

My teammates and I focused on research regarding LGBTQ+ older adults and the areas of concern related to their long-term care environments.

These included a poor understanding by facility of sexuality and sexual diversity in the elderly and negative personal perceptions of safety and inclusion among LGBTQ+ elders and long term care residents.

We found that despite the large population of LGBTQ+ older adults and these widespread fears of discrimination, there is still a major lack of housing opportunities available for the LGBTQ+ community, specifically in the South and in the Midwest.

My partner and I were tasked with repurposing the Landscape Architecture Bulding on the Iowa State University Campus into an evolving higher education building for multicultural students. The project approaches student’s wellbeing in a holistic way with new teaching and learing technologies that supports online and hybrid learning.

This project was developed in collaboration with my partner Tessa Pooley.

This space is designed to create a safe and engaging atmosphere for international students and other users of the building. By using warm hues and soft textures the space will feel like a third place to its users. We strive to create a universal and inclusive design for students of all needs in order to activate their highest learning potential. This will include fluid & team-based learning along with adjustments for education in a post-pandemic world. Our spaces will contribute to the overall well-being of students and faculty in a harmonious manner.

The NEXT BEAUTY space is designed to recreate the core values of inclusivity and diversity that the brand itself prides on, as well as being vegan, crueltyfree, and sustainable. These values are highlighted by using only raw, clean and organic materials within the space. This design showcases warm tones and incorporates characteristics of biophilia to create a feeling of security while also connecting users with their innate need to exist in nature.

The concept for this design is to create a relaxing, welcoming space for the clients, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher in their new vacation home. This residence will be secluded in the mountains in Utah. This home will be the place for them to enjoy their family and friends away from their hectic, California lifestyle. To establish that cognitive-emotional bond within their home the place attachment theory will be used within the space.

The concept for this design is to create a calming space for the clients to age in place on their own. This home will accommodate their needs to maintain a healthy lifestyle & communicate with loved ones through virtual meetings while also being able to relax and enjoy the culture & city life around them. In order for these clients to age in place with ease, their home will need to account for larger & easily accessible spaces to accommodate wheel chairs and/or walkers in the future if needed. Overall, this concept will provide a safe & nurturing environment for the couple to live.
