asim pieta: document evan washington clarke nabrit
asim pieta: document november 7, 2006 - november 22, 2006: this album documents the Asim commission. the word "pieta" is translated as "pity", from the italian. sometimes called 'the lamentation' in other doctrines, the event depicted involves mary with post-crucifixion christ cradled in her lap. this gory iconography was first popularized in 13th century germany as sculpture, often rendered in wood, the wounds and anguish exaggerated to gothic purportions. michelangelo gives us the mannered version 100 years later in italy. the pieta is a classical, high-potency theme in western art and thought. the opportunity to enter my version into this longevous discourse was one i could not skip. the asim pieta is intended to be both reverent to this history and at the same time challenging to its contempory viewership.
