R.A.I.N. for Kids (Project Based on Exchange for Summer 2012) RAIN for Kids is a two-part advocacy project for children that aims to generate awareness and address challenges encountered by less fortunate children in Davao City. It is comprised of two phases. The first phase focuses on the “awareness” part where international volunteers immerse to different NGOs as a means to integrate the children into the mainstream society. Second Phase is the “action” part where volunteers take part in a community immersion to address the concerns for health among children through community health drives and Community Participatory Action Research.

MISSION We intend to help improving the condition of children’s developing environment by initiating a movement of sensitivity for the issue in Davao City. We aim to mobilize human resources to spread awareness of the situation of children and to create necessary action steps to ease their situation. Through the volunteer work which the project entails, we believe that we can create young leaders who can positively work and impact the society, who can also create good case practices in Davao City for spreading awareness that can be adapted by other countries.

PROJECT MODEL PHASE 1: AWARENESS PHASE Internship Dates: July 9 to August 20, 2012 Where: Davao School and Rehabilitation Center for Visually Impaired (DSRCVI) and Davao Autism Intervention Center and Foundation, Inc. (DAICFI) Target EPs: 40 Objectives 1. Reintegration of children with needs to the society by inculcating a sense of belongingness, and introduction of global outlook in their lives 2. Providing human resources that will take part in the children advocate’s facilitation and progression. 3. Gauging positive impact through advocating the cause of NGOs to the general public and to open more doors for possible benefactors for the NGOs. Highlights EP Immersion to DAICFI and DSCRVI This is a two-way life-changing experience for both international volunteers and children as the former obtains awareness, values and fulfillment after their exposure to the NGOs and for the latter to experience a sense of belongingness and acceptance thus creating a lifetime impact to both.

Let it R.A.I.N. Event This is an affair that will showcase the talents of the children from the 2 NGOs as well as a means to generate further awareness/exposure by introducing the NGOs that are handling them to the invited potential benefactors gathered by the project board. This serves as the culmination of the immersion period, at the same time, the launching of the second cycle of the project which will focus on the realm of health awareness among kids.

Implementation The Local Committee, through the Project Board, and the Exchange Participants will work hand in hand to run the project.

INTEGRATION OF CHILDREN WITH NEEDS INTO MAINSTREAM SOCIETY

Exchange Participants and volunteers are matched with NGOs RAIN: An Advocacy for Children aims to bring 40 international volunteers who will work with Davao School and Rehabilitation Center for Visually Impaired (DSRCVI) and Davao Autism Intervention Center and Foundation, Inc. (DAICFI). The volunteers will be working with each of the partner foundations for two (2) weeks from July to mid-August 2012. NGOs orient volunteers with their volunteer work and provide volunteers with itinerary Before the two-week volunteer program there will be a day allotted for the volunteers’ orientation regarding the work expected from them by the NGOs. All activities during the volunteer program for each foundation will be discussed and consulted with the Foundation Heads and Directors prior to the actual program. This allows the EPs to give the best service possible for the children. An itinerary is provided for by the NGOs to ensure positive and fruitful volunteerism. Children and volunteers interact The EPs are encouraged to hold activities that showcase their own culture to be shared to the children. By the end of their internship, it is expected that both parties shall have experienced something that changes their values and behaviors towards each other. Volunteers self-realize because of the experience and children feel accepted and cared for

The volunteers of the program obtain a sense of fulfillment and awareness. For the international volunteers, this allows them to bring their experiences back to their countries and apply what they have learned and also the values that they have realized. The children, on the other hand, are given a lifechanging experience where they acknowledge the care and love that society has to offer them creating a lifetime impact. INTEGRATION OF CHLDREN WITH NEEDS INTO MAINSTREAM SOCIETY This is the impact and main goal of the entire PBOX and we believe that the volunteer-child interaction is the best way to create an impression on both parties and achieving this goal. After the volunteer program, there will have been a difference made in each child’s life.

PHASE 2: ACTION PHASE Internship Dates: August 17 to September 28, 2012 Where: 4 barangays in Davao City Target EPs: 20 Objectives 1. To yield greater impact in the children’s needs through education and training on proper sanitation, disease prevention, and nutrition. 2. A richer experience of actively taking part in creating a positive impact by devising a project that captures the local needs and realities of the community in Davao City. Highlights Community Profiling The interns will be given ample time to identify the nature of the community they are working on and to target the needs of the community that they need to focus about and take action. Community Health Drive To execute a greater awareness among children and parents through the greatest means of awareness: education through a symposium. Health drives shall follow these symposia where we offer free medical consultations from health care professionals. The EPs shall be the support system of the health care staffs. Create a customized project for the community A good way to enhance EPs research and project management skills by practicing a sense of autonomy among EPs to craft a certain project that addresses an immediate problem in their assigned community.

Implementation

Exchange Participants will be oriented about the project and will be grouped into teams

EPs will visit their assigned community and community welcomes them

EPs will conduct community profiling; community will provide EPs with the needed information

EPs conduct a community health drive

EPs will craft and execute a project for the community

*Community Health Drive and Mini-project can be interchangeable. For more information, check the itinerary.

Exchange Participants will be oriented about the project and will be grouped into teams EPs will be oriented what the project is all about and will be given a series of orientations about what is R.A.I.N., cultural integration session, project management and conducting research. Afterwards, EPs will be grouped into teams and each team will have an assigned community. EPs will visit their assigned community and community welcomes them EPs will visit their assigned community, introduce themselves to the focal person, introduce themselves to the community, talk about the project and set certain agreements. EPs conduct community profiling The community profile serves two purposes. EPs will do community profiling of the target communities to assess persistent problems affecting health of its residents especially the children. Data gathered shall be used to devise lecture topics for the symposium addressing these problems. Second, the community profile should also contain other persistent problems and immediate concerns that need to be addressed by the community; the data will be used to generate a certain tangible output that is beneficial to the community. Community Health Drive After gathering the necessary data and match community needs and what the EPs can provide, they will develop the learning plan for the symposia that is deemed fit to the community’s reality (e.g., records show that most children in the community suffered from dengue last year, EPs from that group will devise a lecture that will explain about dengue, its causes and preventive measures). Afterwards, they will conduct community health drives (medical mission and symposium) focused on children in different barangays [small administrative divisions in cities or municipalities in the Philippines] around the city. They will give the lecture presentations to target audience and assist in the execution of the medical mission.

EPs craft a mini-project for the community Using the data from the community profile, EPs will create a project responding to the most immediate community problem determined during the profiling. Interns are given autonomy to craft and manage their own project and employ own strategies that effectively achieve the goals of their project
