Board Meeting

The board of trustees meets the third Friday of the month at 8:30 a.m. in the cooperative boardroom.

This institution is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

Thank you for attending the 2023 Annual Meeting of the Membership! A total of 200 members participated in this year’s annual meeting. Including guests, 298 were in attendance.

This annual event provides members with an opportunity to learn about the cooperative’s projects of the past year, receive financial information about the cooperative and visit neighbors and employees of Sierra Electric. The meeting started with a great meal provided by Dennis and Paula Riggs.

Attending members received a $50 bill credit, a member appreciation gift for their participation and a chance to win various gift cards and door prizes donated by Tri-State Generation and Transmission, T&D Services, Central New Mexico Electric Cooperative and Western United Electric.

During the business meeting, five members were on the ballot to fill four seats on the board and represent fellow member-owners in setting policy for the cooperative. This is the most important part of the meeting. It allows members to participate in the democratic process of their co-op. Board elections were held for Districts 1, 2 and 3.

In District 1, incumbent Dennis Franklin ran unopposed and was reelected. In District 2, Ray Hodges, who ran unopposed, was newly elected to the board for a one-year term. Ray Ruffini, the incumbent, ran unopposed and was reelected. District 3 incumbent Tami Garrett ran against Kevin Zelenka, and Tami Garrett was reelected.

The Sierra Electric Board spent 2022 reviewing and updating the SEC bylaws. The revisions remove outdated provisions and update the bylaws to reflect current practices of the cooperative. Members were provided a summary of the proposed revised bylaws with the meeting notice and could vote on the revision. Attending members voted to approve the revised SEC bylaws.

Sierra Electric makes a difference because we are different. We are member-owned and locally operated. Members have a voice in how the cooperative is run because they elect the board of directors. The co-op is accountable to its member-consumers. Rates cover the cost of doing business and are not marked up to generate profit. When profit is generated, members receive money back as capital credits.

Thank you to all who attended the annual meeting. Participation like this has made us a strong cooperative for 82 years and will continue to allow strength into the future.
