BEACON'S BEACH LANDSCAPE RESTORATION

The Beacon’s Beach restoration project began fall 2021 and included the removal of non-native vegetation, installation of native shrubs and wildflowers, hydroseed sprayed on the bluff with a native seed mix, erosion control and monthly maintenance. The primary purpose of the landscape restoration is to lessen erosion and stabilize surface soils by establishing native plants on visible areas of the bluff. The native plant restoration project will also create coastal bluff habitat for wildlife and will beautify the coastal access trail.

In winter 2022 crews completed the second round of native plant installation on bluff. The planting included 200 native plants in 1-gallon containers, hydroseed with native seed and additional measures for erosion control. With the recent winter rains keep an eye out for many of the native seeds that have germinated and wildflowers to come this spring.

The Leucadia Streetscape Phase 1 project was completed in Summer 2022. New improvements between Marcheta Street and Basil Street include wider sidewalks, dedicated bike lanes, landscaping, irrigation, streetlights, storm drain system, parking pods, pedestrian trials, crosswalks, asphalt paving, traffic striping, street furniture including benches, chairs, tables, bike racks, and trash and recycling bins, and a roundabout with pedestrian undercrossing at El Portal Street which is now open to the public.

Construction of the Leucadia Streetscape Segment B and C Safety & Mobility Enhancements project began in July 2022 and was completed in December 2022. The project included modifications to the median, restriping of the northbound and southbound lanes through Leucadia to create dedicated bike lanes and reduced the highway to one vehicle lane in each direction from Basil Street to La Costa Avenue. This striping and mobility project brought the Segment B and Segment C portions of the Highway 101 corridor into alignment with the vision of Streetscape in a quick and cost-effective way.

The next phase of construction will begin in late Spring 2023 for the Leucadia Streetscape Segment C West project. New improvements between Jupiter Street and La Costa Avenue include wider sidewalks, dedicated bike lanes, landscaping, irrigation, streetlights, storm drain systems, parking pods, pedestrian trials, crosswalks, asphalt paving, traffic striping, street furniture including benches, chairs, tables, bike racks, and trash and recycling bins, two roundabouts at Grandview Street and Jupiter Street, and a pedestrian traffic signal crossing at Avocado Street. Construction is anticipated to be completed in Summer 2025. The Leucadia Streetscape team continues to engage local businesses to provide information about upcoming work and help address their concerns.
