or Theater of the Stars (TOTS) President Nick Manos, it all begins with family. His father, legendary producer and TOTS founder Christopher B. Manos convinced him to leave the corporate world of employee benefits to join the family business, where he enjoys producing family friendly musicals, including the “official” version of Disney’s High School Musical. The success of that production resulted in a valuable partnership with Disney that gives TOTS the right to adapt High School Musical’s sequels. But the initial idea to tackle the show, Manos says, came from an evening he spent with his daughter. “My daughter wanted to watch the original when it [aired] on Jan. 20, 2006, on the Disney Channel, and

What’s the story? It’s the summer before senior year. East High Wildcats friends Troy, Gabriella, Chad and Taylor are working at the Lava Springs Country Club, owned by the family of the theatrical siblings Sharpay and Ryan Evans. Sharpay wants Troy badly, and uses her powerful connections to lure him away from his girlfriend Gabriella. Will Troy choose his rich new friends over his trusted, loyal ones? she asked me to watch it with her,” Manos remembers. “I did, and I got more interested immediately. The movie struck a nerve with the kids, obviously, but it also struck a nerve with me, because it

was an opportunity to have a fun show with a lot of positive messages.” It’s difficult finding movies that would make good stage musicals, Manos says, especially if you’re geared towards entertaining multiple generations. Most movies are not family friendly, and when they are, they tend to be animated. What Manos found so promising about Disney’s High School Musical was that it was a live action movie, starring teenagers, that sent kids the message that it’s OK to be who you are and take risks to achieve your dreams.
“The first one has been compared in some ways to Grease,” says Nick Manos. “You could certainly argue that Disney’s High School Musical 2 is an updated Beach Blanket Bingo.” “Those are messages that hit home with a lot of people and … [it had] the kind of storylines and messages we like to portray in the shows we do,” Manos says. Disney had made the decision to allow theater groups to produce musical versions of the movie, but on an amateur, not professional, basis. “They thought it was more geared towards that style of show: casting real teenagers and doing it in high schools and middle schools,” Manos says. “[TOTS] and a couple of other professional theaters pushed very hard to expand that to include professional theaters.” 10 ENCORE ATLANTA
TOTS was one of six professional theaters committed to developing a musical version, and the first to get a fully mounted production up and running. “We put our heart and soul into producing it,” Manos remembers. “We hired a great creative team and made a few tweaks to make it shorter, faster and funnier. It was a big success artistically, financially and otherwise.” The Disney executives who came to see the show agreed. “They ended up thinking the show was now not only suitable for schools, amateurs and a few professional licenses, but that it could tour around the country,” Manos says. “They picked it up and started touring it in summer 2007 and finished the tour [this] August. The same production has played in throughout the United Kingdom and Italy; it’s playing this fall in Australia, and it’s our production.” The success of the original deepened the partnership between TOTS and Disney, who already had a good working relationship. Disney not only gave TOTS the right to produce subsequent musical versions of the lucrative franchise, they also gave them the green light to produce an original musical version of the movie Tarzan, playing the Fox Jan. 16-25. Disney’s High School Musical 2 plays Nov. 6-16 at The Fabulous Fox Theatre.

HONORING JAZZ GREATS Co-creator and director Richard Maltby Jr. celebrates the 30th Anniversary of Ain’t Misbehavin’
T
hirty years ago, Ain’t Misbehavin’ — the original jukebox musical — premiered at the Manhattan Theatre Club and transferred to Broadway. The evening of Fats Waller songs launched the careers of artists such as Nell Carter, Irene Cara and André DeShields, and won several awards, including the 1978 Tony Award for Best Musical and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. It also won a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, which went to the show’s co-creator Richard Maltby Jr. (Miss Saigon, Fosse, Big). Maltby also directed the 30th Anniversary version of the show, which kicks off its national tour in Atlanta this month, starring “American Idol” veterans Ruben Studdard, Frenchie Davis and Trenyce Cobbins. “I’m immensely proud of this show,” Maltby says. “It’s a tribute to the artists who forged the way. All the black artists who are successful today are standing on 12 ENCORE ATLANTA
the shoulders of these people [who] did it when it was really hard. It was hard to get a recording contract; it was hard to get a record out. They did it simply by being so talented that they couldn’t be ignored. … Nowadays, you can be heard if you’re singing at 16, and you can be famous by the time you’re 17 or 18. All that happens because of the trails that were blazed by the jazz artists of the 30s. Any young person looking at the show should [realize] ‘that’s where I came from.’” The inspiration for this production’s casting came from an unlikely source. “I watched the Ruben Studdard year of ‘American Idol’ [2003] and was thinking, ‘These kids are so unbelievably talented.’ And then I [realized], when I cast Ain’t Misbehavin’, all those people were in their 20s. As it’s gone on, the show’s been [remounted] with people who have done the show before, so we’ve gotten used to the show being played [by] older

performers. I thought, ‘Why not get these young artists? Wouldn’t the show benefit from having this kind of youth?’” Maltby began work on Ain’t Misbehavin’ soon after graduating from Yale University. His friend Murray Horwitz, a jazz buff, convinced him to collaborate on a new musical based on the life of Fats Waller (born Thomas Wright). They scrapped the project when they discovered his life had no real second act. When Manhattan Theatre Club’s Artistic Director Lynne Meadow asked them for a nightclub version to fill a hole in the theater’s season schedule, Maltby and Horwitz found the inspiration needed to finish the show. A series of accidents gave Ain’t Misbehavin’ its final structure. Maltby wrote the show with a particular actress in mind. When she turned down the role, open auditions were held. “In came Armelia McQueen, who is bizarre and has this glorious voice and seems like she’s from this other planet, and I thought, ‘Oh, that’s fantastic,’” Maltby remembers. “Half an hour after that, Nell Carter came in and I thought, ‘Oh my God, that’s fantastic.’ I could only hire one of them, and I couldn’t make up my mind, so I hired them both and then built the evening to a song in which where they both had high notes, so no matter what had happened before or after, you’d have a show-stopper.” 14 ENCORE ATLANTA
When the slender Irene Cara came in to audition, Maltby got the idea to cast her as a physical contrast to McQueen and Carter, and have the larger women gang up on her. He also realized that if he cast two men instead of three, there would always be one woman left out when people coupled up. That tension, Maltby discovered, gave the show a multitude of plots with only five characters. Maltby says he wanted to helm a 30th Anniversary production to remind audiences of what the musical is really about. “It has been done by other people, and every time I see it, I feel as if other directors and choreographers have sort of missed the point and the dignity that’s in the show. You could be a star in a Harlem nightclub, but if you went downtown, the only parts available [to black actors] were a maid or a slave. You could be a member of the band at the Waldorf-Astoria, but you weren’t allowed to walk through the lobby. Tin Pan Alley ripped off songs by the great writers and published them with other people’s names on them. So underneath the comedy of [the show’s songs], there’s something serious the whole time.” Ain’t Misbehavin’ plays The Fabulous Fox Theatre Nov. 17-23. How did your experience on “American Idol” prepare you for Ain’t Misbehavin’? It prepared me [for] the workload. It’s my first time ever having to do eight shows a week. It’s more similar to what I did in college [as a vocal education major] than what I did on “American Idol.” What has been your biggest challenge in preparing for this role? We did a cast recording about three weeks ago, and we had to learn the whole show in days. [I went] from just singing my music to having to rely on knowing how to sing [technically] and read music — things I haven’t done in years. It’s more musically intense than I thought it would be. The comedy comes from the way you deliver the song. So, that’s the stretch for me, learning how to turn it [up to] 50 when you’re used to singing on stage at 10. How did you prepare for this role? I listen to the music a lot [and] watch the original cast recordings, trying to see what I can do to still be myself, but stay true to the part. Singing the material every day is something I have been doing since I left New York with the cast. Do you feel any pressure performing this role? Of course. When you come behind anything that’s great, there’s always a certain level of pressure. But this is my job, and this is what God has given me 18 Encore Atlanta
the opportunity to do. At some point, you have to get over that and just try to do the best that you can. What’s your favorite song in the show? Probably “Honeysuckle Rose.” I sing a lot of love songs, [but] this one really kind of caught me off-guard. It’s such a wellwritten song. I really love the words, the music, everything. It’s awesome. And, it’s something I think somebody would want [someone] to say to them. I really love [singing it with] Frenchie. It’s a very sensual play on words. Everybody’s going to like that part. How did “American Idol” influence you artistically? Before “American Idol,” I was really into neo-soul music. That changed a lot because, once you get on “American Idol,” you have to do music that is more commercially accepted — people just expect that from you. I think that with this new album that I’m doing with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, everybody’s going to get the opportunity to see the real Ruben, the soul of me. I never want people to forget that I was on the show, but [I’m] trying to step out of the box, the confining box that they put you in musically. Dear Patrons and Subscribers: Welcome to the fifth show in our 2008 Season, the professional premiere of Disney’s High School Musical 2. The Wildcats are back for an all new adventure and we look forward to having Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, Ryan and the gang back on the Fox stage. With a summertime plot and great new music, we are positive that everyone will love this fun and energetic show. Following Disney’s High School Musical 2, we move on to the highly anticipated Tarzan, Jan. 16-25, 2009. Both shows are new to the Fox stage and we hope you will enjoy them! Theater of the Stars leads the Atlanta arts community in creating new musical theater work. This season alone, TOTS will have produced two new adaptations and one completely new piece for the stage. We do this because it is our mission to continue to provide you with family friendly theater that can be shared with the young and young at heart. Producing three new works in a season of six productions is not without risk. We are aware the economy is making it harder and harder for families to afford to join us just as it is becoming harder and harder for TOTS to keep up with the rising costs of producing at the quality levels you deserve. Please know we are doing all we can to keep our ticket prices reasonable while continuing to create exceptional productions. For 2009-2010, Theater of the Stars will not increase its subscription prices from the current levels. If you are a subscriber, please renew today to insure that you don’t miss the excitement of the many great shows to come, including the hugely popular JERSEY BOYS. As you know, subscribers have access to the very best seats in our house every season! While you are at it, please consider inviting a friend to join us as a subscriber. We’ve got a new Ambassador Program that will reward current subscribers for bringing new subscribers on board. There are a lot of fun benefits included and you will be helping us continue to share the important — and entertaining — musicals you can only see through TOTS at The Fabulous Fox Theatre. Give us a call at (404) 252-8960 to renew your subscription or to learn more about the Ambassador Program. How did you become involved with Theater of the Stars? I have always attended the Theater of the Stars musicals. I happened to mention to a friend how much I loved musical theater and that if I ever made a career change that I wanted to go into theater and entertainment. Unknown to me, she was on the TOTS Board and knew that the organization was trying to build more strategy and marketing capability at the Board level, which is my expertise. Shortly after my conversation with my friend, I was approached by Nick Manos to serve on the Board. I am honored to be asked to participate in something I love. What are your favorite musicals? I have three favorites: Les Miserables, because the first time I saw it, I realized I had never seen anything like it before; A Chorus Line, because it was my first professional musical; and Anything Goes, because I love the tap dancing. What is it about theater that speaks to you? I always, when I am in the theater, feel like I am in a different world. I find musical theater to be completely absorbing and uplifting, even if the stories are not always about happy subjects. The combination of music, dancing and acting makes my spirit soar. What would you tell someone about Theater of the Stars if they haven’t experienced our work? Every production is magnificent. The depth of talent and the quality of the productions are comparable to what you find on Broadway and the West End. The other thing I would say is that Chris’ curtain speeches are legendary — so you are part of a unique experience in Atlanta. What is one thing people might not know about you? I grew up in Belfast during a period of civil unrest when all of the professional theaters were being blown up and closing. My exposure to theater was listening to my parents’ record collection of musicals and seeing movies. I saw my first professional production when I was 17 in London. When you are deprived of something you love, you really appreciate it when you get it. To this day, every time I enter a theater it thrills me. Two other things. I am really a research scientist with a Ph.D. in Agricultural Botany, and I brought theater into the business world by working with a Tony-winning director to use actors to bring alive consumer research and motivate business leaders to think in a new way across Europe and the U.S. Is there anything else you would like to include in this interview? Just that I am so proud to be a part of Theater of the Stars. The organization does so much wonderful work that is touching to all of us.

How did you become involved with Theater of the Stars? While I have been a frequent theater-goer, including many of Theater of the Stars’ productions, I am fortunate to know one of Atlanta’s incredible arts patrons, supporters and enthusiasts, Virginia Hepner, who serves on the Board of Trustees. We had known one another for some time via business and civic functions, but one day she asked me whether I’m a theater fan -— and the answer was an enthusiastic “yes.” The rest is history because Virginia is outstanding in reaching out to others and encouraging opportunities to become more deeply involved in arts and culture. What are your favorite musicals? Picking all-time favorite musicals is difficult because, throughout my life, I’m rarely disappointed in all aspects of a show. They often offer something of value, even if the music, lyrics and book are not all equally wonderful. For example, I’ve seen plenty of incredible talent performing on stage in less-than-successful vehicles. West Side Story and Les Miserables are two standout musicals not only because of their incredible scores and staging but for the inventive ways these shows brought to stage material derived from literary sources —- Shakespeare and Hugo. What is it about theater that speaks to you? It’s a simple truth that musicals provide a way of getting outside of yourself for a couple of hours. Depth of character is conveyed through lyrics and music, which is unlike any other form of expression. Even for shows that have become somewhat dated, there is always the time-capsule aspect that allows for wonderful escapism and a way to experience what audiences did in an earlier period. What would you tell someone about Theater of the Stars if they have never seen one of our productions before? Be prepared to see a first-rate production that moves you and offers great staging, talent and production values in performances of some of musical theater’s best and most carefully chosen material. As a bonus, you get to experience shows within the incredible space that is The Fox Theatre — a joy for all audiences. What is one thing people might not know about you? Depending on who you are asking, not everyone would know how widely my entertainment interests and tastes vary. I enjoy a day (and night) of watching college football on Saturday followed by musical theater on Sunday. For that reason, living in Atlanta in the fall is especially spectacular! Is there anything else you would like to include in this interview? One of the things that people in Atlanta may not realize, and that I came to find out once I discovered more about Theater of the Stars, is the phenomenal community service provided by this non-profit organization. Between providing important local jobs in the theater arts for established professionals, the Theater enables young people to gain incredible experience on a big stage performing classic or timely material. Thriving cities like Atlanta depend on a great theater enterprise like this one to be a truly vibrant community.

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view.
