Happy silver anniversary to the Alliance production of A Christmas Carol ! Twenty-five years is a long time, and I am privileged and astonished to have been associated with 24 of the 25 productions, either as an actress or director. Being part of A Christmas Carol always feels like returning home for the holidays. The memories are rich. At the start of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge has locked away his memories for quite some time. While visiting the past, he reflects after seeing Dick Wilkins: “Was there ever a friend like Wilkins? Strange to have forgotten him for so many years.” I remember my high school English teacher used to say, “It is lucky we all have good forgeteries.” Emily discovers this in Our Town when she is reliving memories and achingly asks, “Does anyone realize life while they live it ... every, every minute?” The answer: “No. Saints and poets maybe ... they do some.” If you were fortunate enough to have seen Susan Booth’s beautiful production of Native Guard earlier this season, you would have experienced this in Natasha Trethewey’s poetry. Memories are part of the fabric that makes up our lives. Sharing memories, painful or not, wraps us in emotion and connects us to each other. At the end of A Christmas Carol (spoiler alert!), Scrooge is “not the man he was.” He becomes hyperaware of himself and his surroundings. He cannot see, hear ... sense enough of everything! He is like a baby – discovering all and sharing his findings with everyone. Few of us will ever encounter ghostly visitors, and I am guessing many of us are not poets, but most of us have memories, and that’s what anniversaries are about. If you have a memory of one of our Christmas Carols past, or if you are creating a memorable moment today, please take time to go to the Alliance website and share that memory with all of us or, if you wish, use Dickens’ method and put pen to paper and send it our way. I would like to acknowledge and thank the hundreds of actors, designers, crew members, theatre personnel and volunteers who have joined us over the years to share this remarkable story with the Atlanta community. I would also like to thank our audiences and especially you sitting here right now – whether this is your first Alliance A Christmas Carol or your 25th – we appreciate that a choice has been made to create memories with us as this moment in time. “I will strive to live in the Past, the Present and the Future,” Scrooge repeated as he scrambled out of bed. “The spirits of all three will strive within me.” God bless you, everyone!

S

crooge, glorious Scrooge. That cranky old geezer is sure to be restless on (or under?) the boards of the Alliance Theatre, sneering and snickering and counting his coins. We can also be sure that on Christmas Eve, he’ll tuck his miserable self into bed and have one doozy of a dream. And year after year, many of us choose to relive that dream with Scrooge, the central character in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

“We revisit this story,” says Rosemary Newcott, who directs the Alliance’s 25th anniversary production, “because Dickens’ tale holds ideas and elements that are central to the season of goodwill.” “The essential story helps us recognize the compassion we should have for all human beings — no matter their circumstances,” says Newcott, the Alliance’s Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth and

“ I have replaced actors on more than one occasion and here’s what I have come to know: Even if you do something similar, it’s not the same because you are you, and you have your own unique essence.” David de Vries Families. Over the years, she has both acted in and directed the Alliance’s Carol. She’s eager to introduce a new Scrooge to this holiday tradition. After 16 years in the role, Chris Kayser hung up his night cap last season, making way for a new Ebenezer, Atlanta actor David de Vries. “It helps that Chris and I are about the same size, at least in terms of body frame,” says de Vries. “Maybe that’s really why I got the part, because they don’t have to make new costumes for me. I can just wear his.” Bah, humbug. “David is such an enormously talented actor,” says Newcott. “I mean this is a guy who has done everything from Glengarry Glen Ross to Wicked to playing the candlestick in Beauty and the Beast on Broadway. He has such range, to be whimsical and also dead serious. As Scrooge, he gets to play all levels.” The role requires a champion, she says. Scrooge is almost always onstage. As the play unfolds, he revisits his entire life — a life fraught with lost chances, loneliness, turmoil and regret. De Vries calls Scrooge “one of the

De Vries in Sleuth. reat roles of the English stage.” He’s had his eye on the part for years. “The fact that I’ve had plenty of life experience by now, to me that’s invaluable to approaching this role. When you’re young, all you see in Scrooge is someone who is unkind and ungenerous. The more life you live, the more you understand how choices, circumstances and losses inform a person’s worldview. And hopefully you develop, at the very least, a sense of understanding and empathy as to why a person became the way they are.” The actor calls Scrooge “an emotional anorexic who has built a fortress around his heart.” And he’s in denial, as are many people before undergoing a transformation or intervention. In this case, three ghosts handle Ebenezer’s intervention, de Vries says, and the end result is redemption. “At the start of the play, he doesn’t see people as human beings, but rather as transactional entities,” the actor says. “He goes all the way from that to seeing them as people with hopes and dreams and love. To me, that’s the spirit of the show — the idea that it’s not too late for anyone.” De Vries says he has no tricks in

mind for putting his own stamp on the role previously inhabited by such Atlanta icons as Kayser and Tom Key. “I have replaced actors on more than one occasion and here’s what I have come to know: Even if you do something similar, it’s not the same because you are you, and you have your own unique essence,” de Vries says. “You have to trust that as an actor, because if you start overreaching, it won’t seem authentic.” “All I can do is try to access my heart and understand the circumstances of the play and render them as honestly as possible. That’s what I’m shooting for.” The last thing he’ll do, he says, is “lose” himself in the role. He adheres to advice from a famous New York acting teacher, the late Uta Hagen. “She said you don’t lose yourself in the role, you find yourself. I like to find myself. We have to plumb the depths of our own experience. When you’re doing that and when you are really cooking onstage, believe me, you are aware of absolutely everything.” A

discover us discover us. discover you. When our 6-year-old daughter had a walk-on part in A Christmas Carol, I saw her discover the magic of the theatre. In her own words, “I got ready with the other actors and I learned about their backstage game Good Show! My dresser always made sure I had the right costume and my stage mom helped me find my marks on stage. I even got to make it snow! Scrooge ad-libbed a line about me and I got to take a curtain call with everyone else.” There are many important themes in Dickens’s classic work: selflessness, charity, love, community. A Christmas Carol will always take me back to a December matinee when a wonderful group of talented people welcomed my daughter into their theatre family.

Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 80 original productions including Tony Award winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice, and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. The Alliance has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring, and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act: The Musical, Come Fly Away, Bring It On: The Musical, Stephen King and John Mellencamp’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, the American premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings, and most recently, Bull Durham and Harmony — A New Musical by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman. The work produced by the Alliance gives locally based artists the chance to create on a nationally watched stage, building and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Each year the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department reaches close to 50,000 students through performances, acting classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives. The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level, from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to the groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance also offers community education classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development, working with local and national playwrights. An active participant in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatrical techniques to aid in student learning through storytelling and problem-solving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K – 2nd grade, and Dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance Children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher Corps. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact Shana Orr at 404.733.4761 or shana.orr@woodruffcenter.org.
