between us

When my dad was in his 60s, he called me at college and told me he was taking a new job in a faraway city and selling our family home. My first response was, “Wow ... how great that my dad and mom and sister, still in high school, are starting on this new adventure.” I hung up the phone and burst into tears, realizing my childhood home would no longer be a place to which I would return. I did not realize until that moment that I had established such a strong attachment to that “place.” When I went home on winter break and saw the new house, I found it absolutely lovely and far easier for my mother to keep up and navigate. The move was a good one. The home quickly became the new destination for family celebrations. Change is not easy. Scrooge’s journey proves that over and over. He finally realizes that humans have a huge capacity to do good ... and that THAT can bring great pleasure to those who receive and those who give. The places in which we work and play significantly affect our quality of life, but it is the caliber of the human interaction anywhere we linger that sustains us. The connections between the artists who create this world and the connections between the audiences and actors are always the heart and soul of our production of A Christmas Carol. Thank you again and again for making us a part of your holiday. I wanted to end this letter to you this year by recognizing a human whose spirit will always remain a part of this production. Pete Shinn, who for many years maintained and built upon Diane Ferry Williams’ beautiful A Christmas Carol lighting design, passed away this past season, but his light shines on. Wishing you safe and happy life changes, the warmth of friends and family, and great joy this holiday season!

Tiny Tims Christmases Past

Catch up with 8 Tims from Alliance Theatre stagings. One has grown to 6-foot-3. One is on Broadway. All agree that playing the role was a very big deal. By Julie Bookman

10 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

“God bless us, everyone!” Tiny Tim, the sweet but sickly Cratchit boy, delivers perhaps the most memorable line in A Christmas Carol. The 1843 story by Charles Dickens centers on the redemption of nasty old Ebenezer Scrooge, but Tiny Tim is its beating heart, representing the goodness that Scrooge so seriously lacks. The role of the 6-year-old Tiny Tim isn’t huge. But it’s a big deal for the parade of young actors who’ve carried his signature crutch and spoken his memorable lines on the Alliance Theatre stage. When Nicholas Sanders won the role in 2011, “he absolutely thought it was the biggest role in the show,” his mom, Courtney Sanders, says with a laugh. It’s a role that not just any kid shy of 4-foot-4 can play. Tim is emotionally mature for his age and size, which is why the boy chosen is often older than 6. When casting the role, director Rosemary Newcott says she seeks a certain “quality.” She looks for a small person with “soulful” eyes, someone able to “understand the journey that is Tim’s journey.” At auditions, she questions potential Tiny Tims so she can learn “about the heart standing” in front of her, and the child’s understanding of giving. This year — the Alliance’s 27th A Christmas Carol and Newcott’s 17th — 9-year-old Marco Schittone plays Tim. He was in the Alliance’s world premiere of Tuck Everlasting in 2015, and went with the show to Broadway. He “has a radiance and intelligence about him that belie his years,” Newcott says. Follow us now to Christmas Carols past and get reacquainted with a Tiny Tim or two you may remember.

SCHAFER GRAY | 1997-98 • Then: Schafer was 7 when he first played Tim and didn’t realize the weight of the role until he saw a newspaper story headlined: “Alliance Theatre has found its Tiny Tim.” He’ll never forget those words. • Now: He’s 26 and a graduate of the University of Georgia, where he majored in religion. He lives in Mableton, works as an anesthesia technician at Northside Hospital and plans to become a physician’s assistant. Years ago he swapped acting for music. He’s the drummer for an alt-rock-folk band called Amsterdam Station, which plays around metro Atlanta. • On playing Tim: “It brought confidence to me at such a young age, to know that I have something that could bring people a lot of joy. It was impressed upon me that it was an important role and I took it seriously at the time — as seriously as a 7-year-old could.” • A highlight: “I loved experiencing the inner workings of a large theater. A backstage technician showed me the big caldron full of hot water and dry ice used to fill the stage with fog. I was mesmerized.” EVAN O’REILLY | 2000 • Then: Evan, 6-foot-3 today, in second grade when he played Tiny Tim, comes from a family of actors. His parents, Teresa DeBerry and Allen O’Reilly, met in the 1980s as Alliance Theatre interns. • Now: Evan, 23, graduated from Drew University in New Jersey with a psychology major and theater minor. He waits tables to pay bills and although his theater focus has shifted to writing and directing, his goal is a music career. • On playing Tim: “I think I was a pretty cute kid. I had big eyes and a big head. I liked being part of such a big production at a young age. It made me want to learn how everything else in the theater works. “Once you have the theater bug, it’s hard to shake,” he says. The desire to act has never left, but “adult pressures can get in your way. When you’re a kid, you don’t begin to understand the obstacles. At 7 and 8 years old, it was the easiest thing in the world, with girls wanting my autograph. I wish I could be as carefree now about it as I was when I was as a little kid.”

CHAS CRAWFORD | 2002 • Then: Chas had a tiny role in a play about Julius Caesar while in third grade at Pace Academy and caught the eye of the school principal, who knew the Alliance needed a Tim. No one in his family had ever done theater. “Gosh, I was so nervous,” he recalls. “I had never auditioned before, and my mom kept telling me to relax. I had to sing ‘Away in a Manger.’ ” • Now: Chas, 23, graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a degree in theater performance. He lives in Denver, where he sells computer software to earn a living and saves so he can concentrate on acting later. He’s done commercials and film work, including a role as the evil leader of a street gang in an hourlong independent film called The Restless. He considers that his best work to date. • On playing Tim: “It helped me learn how to be present in the moment.” That year, Kenny Leon played Scrooge and Chris Kayser was Marley. A powerful memory for Chas: observing Leon going over his lines. “I watched him from the sidelines as he repeated them over and over. It was a great lesson and the image never left me.” • K ids will be kids: Kids in the show liked to go underneath the trap door onstage right before Marley’s entrance. “I’ll never forget goofing off down there and watching Chris take a drag on a cigarette because he wanted smoke to come out of his mouth as he came up.” BRYCE GOLSEN | 2003 • Then: Bryce had never auditioned before. “I was very, very scared because I was never a very social kid. I was small, shy, not confident.” He remembers other kids being “overly enthusiastic, while I was this quiet, level-headed kid, small and meek. And I think they needed small and meek.” • Now: Bryce, 22, is a pre-veterinarian biology major at Emory University, hoping to attend vet school at the University of Georgia. His dream job: to work with pandas. “I did some more acting and dancing after I played Tiny Tim,” he says. “I saw it as an unusual hobby as a kid and liked the attention, but as I got deeper into the industry, I realized it wasn’t for me. It’s not all puppies and rainbows.”

TENDAL MANN | 2005-07 • Then: Tendal played Tim for three years, succeeded by his younger brother, Royce. At 9, Tendal earned praise as Dill in Theatrical Outfit’s To Kill a Mockingbird. The Mann brothers, the sons of theater pros Sheri Mann Stewart and Barry Stewart Mann, continue to act in theater, film and commercials. • Now: Tendal, 18, is taking a gap year and traveling before he enters Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., where he plans to continue acting and study psychology and philosophy. • On playing Tim: “I always thought I got the role because I was a cute kid, and because I went into it without pressure or expectations. I was just natural. I liked the attention I got as one of the stars of the show, but looking back, I also think the fact that Tiny Tim comes from an impoverished background and has a disability helped open my eyes at a young age — to not always just be thinking of myself.” ROYCE MANN | 2008-10 • Then: Royce’s acting career began at age 7 with Tiny Tim, and has never let up. “I remember jumping up and down and screaming when we got the call that they were casting me. Like all younger brothers, I wanted to do what my older brother did.” • Now: Royce, 15, is a student at Atlanta’s Paideia School and also loves sports (especially baseball), writing and filmmaking. The role represents “the heart, the soul, the overall meaning and spirit of the show,” he says. “It’s a wonderful character — someone I hope to embody.” • On playing Tim: He rehearsed “God bless us, everyone” over and over because he wanted to do it a little different than his brother. “I liked playing someone who has gone through so many setbacks that I haven’t but always seems to find the bright side of things. Tiny Tim is so young, but he already knows about empathy, love and compassion and has so many wonderful qualities that many adults don’t even have.”

NICHOLAS SANDERS | 2011 • Then: Nicholas gives his mom partial credit for winning the role — she sent him into the audition dressed as Tiny Tim. “I was not going for it. I thought that was just going to make me look crazy,” he says. But it turned out to be his lucky charm. “After I sang for them, we walked back to our car, but they were already calling us back into the theater to see if I was light enough for the older Cratchit boy to carry me.” • Now: Playing Tim at age 10 “put me on my career path,” says Nicholas, who’s 15 and a sophomore at the DeKalb School of the Arts. He’s most recently played multiple roles in Shuddersome: Tales of Poe, one-acts prepared for high school theater competitions. He plans to study acting in college. • A Tiny Tim memory: Nicholas began each show by entering with the actors playing his parents. At one performance, the trap door they crossed over had not been properly closed. “But my mother noticed, and she grabbed me and led me around it, keeping me safe. That’s what it was like. We were like a family. I have your back, you have my back.” MORGAN GAO | 2012 • Then: When Morgan auditioned for A Christmas Carol, he didn’t have a resume or know what a headshot was, but playing Tiny Tim sparked his acting career, he says. In short order, he had an agent and a manager. • Now: Morgan, now an 11-year-old sixth-grader at The Lovett School, is on Broadway in Holiday Inn, The New Irving Berlin Musical, playing Charlie Winslow, whom he describes as “precocious, straightforward, smart and practical, but oddly charming.” Morgan’s the only kid in the show, with his own spacious dressing room. • On playing Tiny Tim: “It was my favorite Christmas season ever!” Even though Tiny Tim has it tough, “he keeps believing,” says Morgan, “and always sees the good side of his surroundings. He makes everyone around him joyous.” A

Recognizing Dickens’ characters in ourselves

ith hundreds of adaptations over a span of almost 200 years, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has become timeless. While 19th-century London is far removed from 2016 Atlanta, the story’s holiday ethos still rings true today. Despite our worst circumstances, we take the holidays to celebrate good times and good people. We look forward to the year ahead, and set resolutions on how we can be our best selves. We give back to those who have given to us, and give to those who are unable to give at all. Much like the people in Ebenezer Scrooge’s life, we find there is much happiness to experience and share. I first saw the Alliance production of A Christmas Carol last December. It was reminiscent of other film and TV adaptations, focusing on the whirlwind adventure through time, and the spectacle of the ghosts. What I found striking was how our version delves into

the characters who surround Scrooge. Like us, they struggle with money and their health. They lament about getting through a harsh winter. They sing, dance and laugh. They love fervently, even when their world may not love them back. By digging deeper into the lives of London’s impoverished and working-class heroes, we find that despite running a business and owning a spacious home, Scrooge is the poorest person in the story. He has ultimately bankrupted himself by isolating his heart from the wealth found in love, family and the holiday spirit. Yet, this does not rob Scrooge of redemption. His reaction to his personal hardships is very human and modern. Even today, we have our Scrooge moments. We stress over how to make ends meet and fret about the future. We miss family members who have passed on. All of this can lead to frustration, despair and a negative worldview. What I realized while seeing the Alliance production ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG 21

program note Chas Crawford (seated, center), Mitchell Anderson (standing), Tracey Copeland and the 2002 cast. Photo by Eric Richardson

was that most of us are ultimately similar to those trying to uplift and accept Scrooge. Some of us are Fred, Scrooge’s nephew, trying our best to be open and endearing to those who are guarded and unpleasant. Some of us are Bob Cratchit, working long, tough hours to provide for loved ones, while also being of good cheer. Some of us are Tiny Tim, dealing with chronic illness or pain, and still finding relief with hope and eternal optimism. The holidays were rough then, and they can be rough now. In a rush of wish lists and bargains, we may feel not welloff, or that our giving may 22 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

not be good enough. We are Scrooge’s neighbors, scraping together what we can for gifts and feasts, and for what we can’t give or receive in material things, we make up for in love and appreciation. This season, it’s important to encourage the Scrooges in our lives and to honor our Cratchits and Freds, the people who keep us in good spirits year-round. In turn, we can spread our own joy and compassion, both of which are found in abundance in the immortal characters of A Christmas Carol. — Olivia Matthews Playwright, Alliance Theatre Kenny Leon Fellow

discover us. discover you. discover us. discover you. The annual tradition of revisiting A Christmas Carol is shared throughout the world, but our telling of this classic tale is wonderfully unique in the way it reflects the beauty of the Atlanta community. Welcome to “Dickensian ATL”! Traditional carols with a hint of gospel fill your soul, a multiracial Cratchit family reminds you of true love, and old Scrooge’s journey of redemption is framed by his elaborate warehouse of goods containing treasures from years of theater at the Alliance. As I don my bonnet for another year and prepare to help tell this story, I feel a great sense of joy and responsibility in being a part of such a special tradition for so many. Ann Marie Gideon Belle/Ensemble, U/S Christmas Past

synopsis:

Ebenezer Scrooge, a stone-hearted Victorian accountant and money lender, learns the true meaning of Christmas after he is visited on Christmas Eve by four fantastic spirits: the ghost of Jacob Marley, his former partner in the counting house; the Ghost of Christmas Past; the Ghost of Christmas Present; and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. The specters reveal to Scrooge the seeds of his loneliness in his youth, opportunities for happiness still within his reach, and his dire future if he continues in his mean and miserly ways.

Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. The Alliance delivers powerful programming that challenges adult and youth audiences to think critically and care deeply. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance Theatre received the Regional Theatre Tony Award® in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education, and community engagement. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 100 original productions including Tony Award® winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice, and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. The Alliance has developed and premiered important American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring, and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act: The Musical, Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away, Bring It On: The Musical, Stephen King and John Mellencamp’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, the world premiere of the new musical Tuck Everlasting, and most recently, Born for This: the BeBe Winans Story. The Alliance also creates and nurtures the careers of artists through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing the world premiere for the competition winner as part of the regular season, and the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, providing developmental support and production resources for three performing arts projects each year. The Alliance’s dedication to providing access to the arts is reflected in its commitment to creating new work for all ages, and to bringing that work into classrooms and communities across Atlanta and throughout the region. More than 50,000 students each year experience age-specific professional performances and participate in acting classes, drama camps, and in-school initiatives through the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department. The Alliance’s groundbreaking Kathy and Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young performances offer professionally-produced, fully interactive theater for infants and toddlers; the Palefsky Collision Project invites high school artists to create and perform new civic-minded theater based on a classic text; and community acting classes and skill-building workshops engage professional artists, young actors, business leaders, and curious learners of all ages. Twice recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for leadership in arts education, the Alliance Arts for Learning Institute equips classroom teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum and have been empirically proven to improve student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts and Dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. The work produced by the Alliance allows locally based artists the chance to create on a nationally watched stage, building and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. The vision of the Alliance Theatre is to be a beacon of leadership for the national field, while remaining deeply rooted in and reflective of our local Atlanta community. MISSION Atlanta’s national theater, expanding hearts and minds on stage and off. VISION The Alliance will lead the national field by deeply engaging with its local community, modeling radical inclusion and catalytic experiences on our stages, in our classrooms, and throughout Atlanta. alliancetheatre.org or 404.733.4650

Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fundsaving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The three committees are the Theatre Advocates, the Theatre Educators, and the Theatre Ushers. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact Michael Winn at Michael.Winn@ alliancetheatre.org.
