Dear Friends, Why do we like to spend time with Scrooge? Finding optimism can be challenging. And yet, it is well documented that miraculous circumstances have occurred when positive expectations are a part of the scenario. Hope is not a wish that things will get better, it is an actual belief that they will. For instance, in the Cratchits’ darkest moment, we watch along with Scrooge as Bob Cratchit pulls his family around him. While they mourn an almost unbearable loss, the family love is palpable and despite the pain of the moment, we know this family will survive. A lovely young theater director recently told me she hated to leave her production after it opened because she would so miss the characters and how “hopeful” they were (perhaps even more hopeful than she). I understand. I believe that is one reason we love to return again and again to A Christmas Carol. It leaves us with one of the most powerful messages of hope in all of literature. If a miserly, sour and cruel old man like Scrooge can change, there is hope that anyone can change. Dickens goes a dramatic step further: we not only witness a man’s ability to recognize and become penitent about the way he has lived his life, we witness a completely delightful transformation, beyond what any person who knew Scrooge could hope for. As we read in the novel: “He became as good a master, and as good a man, as the good old city knew, or any other good old city, town or borough, in the good old world. Some people laughed to see the altercation in him, but he let them laugh.” Thank you, Mr. Scrooge. You make us angry and then you make us laugh, and you remind us that there is hope for those Scrooges in our lives, and hope for the little bit of Scrooge in all of us that can learn and change. May your holiday season be filled with heart-filled laughter and may this be a year infused with hope and goodness. Blessings,

All DressedUp The Alliance’s lavish telling of A Christmas Carol turns 28 this season, but for director Rosemary Newcott, it’s a new show every year. By Julie Bookman 8 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

f you’ve gone looking for Scrooge this season, you’ll find the Alliance Theatre’s famous miser in a new locale. Oh, he’s still spreading misery in 19thcentury London, greedily counting his shillings and ha’pennys and turning the less fortunate out of their homes, but he’s moved from Midtown to Cobb County. So, revelers from far and near, welcome to Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre and the Alliance’s 28th annual telling of David H. Bell’s musical, multiracial adaptation of the Dickens holiday classic. At its redemptive core, of course, is ol’ Ebenezer — actor David de Vries — who wears the character’s bathrobe and nightcap for a fourth season, and finally sees the good in mankind in time to carve the Christmas goose. Ooh, we sort of gave away the ending. But that likely doesn’t matter even one smidge of figgy pudding. Audiences return year after year, making this Christmas Carol one of metro Atlanta’s most popular holiday traditions. We’ll let director Rosemary Newcott say more. QUESTION: You’ve directed this Christmas Carol at least 20 times. What’s your history with the piece? ANSWER: Yes, I’ve lived with this show a lot. I acted in the first production at the Alliance. I was in the ensemble and played a number of roles —including Fan, Scrooge’s sister and Belle, Scrooge’s long-ago love interest. When Kenny Leon started directing, I was Mrs. Cratchit for a while. Then David Bell took over, and I was assistant director for about five years. I’d help him direct it here, then direct it for Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera [which has staged the same version for almost as long as the Alliance]. Q: What sort of difference has this Christmas Carol made in your life? A: What a lovely question. It became a family event for me as my brothers and nieces and nephews all traveled here to see it. and myself in Atlanta, and to once again see A Christmas Carol. Dad became ill during that visit and lived in assisted living in Atlanta for five years, until he died. He was the biggest cheerleader for our production, telling relatives and complete strangers in restaurants and stores: “It’s Broadway, just beautiful, you have to see it!” I think this adaptation is an extraordinary piece, and the longevity proves it. And I always get to remember my dad loving it so much. Q: What about this production makes you most proud? A: The number of people who tell me that coming to A Christmas Carol became their family tradition. They say: “We come every season, and we all dress up.” They might have a child in the family who has become old enough to see it for the first time. That’s also so lovely. Q: How do you keep it fresh and new? A: I reread Dickens’ original text. It’s such a beautiful piece to revisit, and it always pulls me back. Every year is a new year, and our production is that way, too. There are always new actors, and they always brings new ideas. My job is always to be as true to the story and characters as possible, because then it’s going to work. The story is so positive in the way it affects audiences — that’s like a gift. Because we’re staging it in the Cobb Energy Centre this year, it’s paramount that I make sure the story’s sentiment doesn’t get lost in the large-ness of the place.

Q: How do you account for the story’s timeless power? A: It’s more than a gentle reminder of what’s most important in life. We only have a short time in this world, and what are you going to do with that time? That’s just one message, but it’s a big one. Scrooge is wasting his life. He has isolated himself and, because of that, he is wasting away. Also, for me, its power involves the child that’s in all of us still. I’m so much about serving the child and the child within. We submerge it, but we need it. This story reminds us it’s OK to think and feel like a child does, in that sincere and joyful and uncomplicated and uncluttered way. Q: This might be impossible, but do you have a favorite line? A: I have many. But what comes to mind is a line spoken by Fred [Scrooge’s nephew]. It’s about the measure of a man.

Measures of forgiveness and charity; of opening hearts so long shut up against the evils of this world and joining with a multitude of other hearts in celebrating all that is holy and good; celebrating all that man is capable of, yet so often ignores.” A

The Alliance Theatre’s A Christmas Carol By Celise K alke
T
he Alliance’s production of A Christmas Carol is a cornerstone of the Atlanta holiday cultural season. It is one of the longestrunning productions of A Christmas Carol in America, a testament to the show’s ability to evolve over time. It is a highly theatrical Broadway-style experience, with a large cast and carols drawn from caroling traditions stretching to the 19th century – and with arrangements that sometimes echo our own time. 16 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
The production was created to fulfill thenartistic director Kenny Leon’s imperative to adapter and then-associate artistic director David Bell to create a Christmas Carol that reflects the great diversity of the Atlanta population. Built on a script Bell created when he was artistic director at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., this version uses direct address (actors facing the audience and narrating from Dickens’ original text) to make sure audiences always realize the

play onstage is telling a story. The production uses ritual and pageantry to create the parable of Ebenezer opening his heart to humanity. The tradition continued under artistic director Susan V. Booth. The ritual and pageantry is now directed each year by Rosemary Newcott, the Alliance’s Sally G. Tomlinson artistic director for Theatre for Youth and Families. Even though it’s a long-running production, as a work of live theater it constantly needs rehearsing
and remounting. Newcott’s job includes making sure performances are up to the high standards of the production, managing the performances of child actors who quickly age out of their roles, and adding new and improved production elements to surprise longtime audience members. In recent years, for example, a new puppet for the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come was added to the special effects that end the second act. Newcott is assisted in ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG 17

the hunt for new talent by the Alliance’s producer and casting director Jody Feldman, who finds a 7-year-old for Tiny Tim as easily as she finds new Broadway-caliber singing talent for the ensemble — all of them performers based in Atlanta. Margaret Ivey, for example, joined the show as a Cratchit child. She’s now a professional adult actor dual-based in New York and Atlanta, who returns to play Scrooge’s beloved Belle. Keep an eye out, too, for members of the ensemble who appear in your favorite TV shows and movies. Many have a long list of media credits, as the greater Atlanta acting community continues to be a draw for the many films made in athe region. You may recognize Joe Knezevich (Fred), for example, from a small but important role in last year’s acclaimed
Hidden Figures. And our Broadway-scale show has a Broadway actor as Scrooge: David de Vries was in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in New York and on tour before he decided to settle permanently in Atlanta. The Alliance tries to make A Christmas Carol as familyfriendly as possible, with childpriced tickets so families can afford to see the show together. There also are ticket programs for military veterans, teachers, teens, seniors and groups. It’s important to the Alliance that the actors and the audiences reflect the diversity of our city. She is a 2009 recipient of the Princess Grace Special Projects award and several Suzi awards, including the 2010 Spirit of Suzi Bass Award. BOOTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Palefsky Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/ Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, local producing partnerships and regional collaborations as well as commercial partnerships such as The Prom, Tuck Everlasting; The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away With Me; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’ da Noise, Bring in ’ da Funk and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. As a director, she has worked at such theaters as the Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern, DePaul, and Emory universities. She is a past president of the board of directors for the Theatre Communications Group, the national service organization for the field, and is a trustee of Denison University. Susan is married to Max Leventhal and is the proud mother of Moira Rose Leventhal.

It reminds us of the joy of family and the power of redemption. The metamorphosis of Ebenezer’s spirit draws us in again and again, and we eagerly await his transformation because it reminds us of our inherent capacity for good and the true meaning and spirit of Christmas. But the transcendent quality of this piece belongs to the multicultural cast which subtly reveals to us our shared humanity – our foibles and failures, our hopes and dreams and the beauty of our ability to transform and return to goodness. Ebenezer Scrooge, a stone-hearted Victorian accountant and money lender, learns the true meaning of Christmas after he is visited on Christmas Eve by four fantastic spirits: the ghost of Jacob Marley, his former partner in the counting house; the Ghost of Christmas Past; the Ghost of Christmas Present; and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. The specters reveal to Scrooge the seeds of his loneliness in his youth, opportunities for happiness still within his reach, and his dire future if he continues in his mean and miserly ways.

The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The three committees are the Theatre Advocates, the Theatre Educators, and the Theatre Ushers.
