4 | betweenus Silence is golden. It’s also really hard. In his gorgeous book Biography of Silence, Pablo d’Ors does a quick and brilliant dissection of why we’re so often uncomfortable with silence: “Remaining in silence with oneself was much more difficult than I had suspected before trying it. It did not take me long to come to a new conclusion: it was almost unbearable for me to be alone with myself, which was the reason I constantly fled myself.” We surround and fill ourselves with noise. Some literal — the car radio, the television, the computer beeps and buzzes and chimes that alert us to input, and some cognitive — the ruminating on what was, what should have been, what might be. It can get loud up there in our heads. But there’s a strange comfort in that noise, I think, as it masks what might emerge in the silence and the stillness. Whether in solitude or in company, there can be a dis-ease with silence for fear of what truth might emerge. (A writer friend once counseled me on my own incessant need to fill a silence in a discussion or argument. “Let it happen,” she said. “And then spell the word ‘awkward’ in your head before you fill it. See what happens.” I seldom make it past the second a.) Bess Wohl’s Small Mouth Sounds, a meditation of a play, is chock full of silence. Purposefully. If you have a moment over the next 90 minutes where you wonder if someone has forgotten their lines, it’s likely purposeful because this is a play about how we reckon with the mess and potential wonder of being human, and how inadequate all of our words and noise can be as tools for that reckoning. There are many reasons I fell in love with this play. (Recall — awkward.) But one of the big ones was a stage direction at its very beginning: Note: Everyone in this play is in some kind of agony. In this way, they are not unlike the rest of us. Not much to say after that, right?

hat do you do when called to write a play about a silent retreat? Do you strip yourself of the ability to use words — your most powerful, welltrained tool — or do you sacrifice the objective and let your characters break the given circumstances of the world within a few pages? This is the conundrum Bess Wohl found herself up against when she set out to write Small Mouth Sounds. “It was a very long process to try to figure out the exact answer to that question,” Wohl says. “My first draft of the play actually had a lot of dialogue in it. I set up the rules of the world as, ‘We’re going to be in silence,’ and because I am a playwright, and I like talking, I let the characters break the rules immediately. So within three pages, everyone was chatting.” A friend of Wohl’s encouraged her to meet her own challenge of limiting dialogue, so in a complete 180 rewrite, the next draft of the piece had no talking at all. But even then, Small Mouth Sounds felt flawed to her. “When I put that on its feet with some actors,” shares the playwright, “it became clear that there were moments where the situation really called for somebody to speak, and you felt that a real person would say something in this moment even if they had taken a vow of silence. But the silence felt sort of imposed by the writer rather than what would organically be truthful to the moment.”

Having experienced silent retreats herself — the first under false pretenses — Wohl knows what that moment can truly be like. “My first silent retreat was with a close friend of mine who sort of dragged me there. The first night that I was there, I realized that we were actually going to be in silence, and I had brought a few bottles of wine,

some snacks… I just had the totally wrong idea of what I was walking into.” Misunderstanding aside, the wheels in her playwright brain immediately began turning. “I pretty quickly thought that this was an interesting place for a play because so much of theatre is about need and transformation, and the reason that people come to these retreats is because they need to be transformed in some way.” She also realized that theatre audiences are already on their own silent retreat of sorts and therefore provide the ultimate last piece to her puzzle. “For me, one happy discovery working on this play was realizing how theatre audience members are participants in a sort of silent retreat together in that they’re called into a space together and asked to observe silence together. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don’t, just like the characters in my play,” she points out. “I was really interested in including the audience as the last piece of the puzzle and having them feel like they are on this retreat with the characters in the play. So, by the end of the play, they too have had some kind of spiritual experience of being in silence together.” Not only do audience members and characters have a spiritual experience, but Small Mouth Sounds has taken Wohl herself on a journey of intense personal growth. “Honestly, one of the reasons I was interested in writing this play was to try to challenge myself to sit with silence in my work and in my life,” she shares.

10 | encore “Can you pause and be brave enough to be in silence and not have to fill every moment with some kind of noise? I definitely found myself as I wrote the play and experienced rehearsals of the play struggling with the questions, ‘Can I live with my feelings of anxiety or boredom or itchiness or need to please the audience in some traditional way that I’ve seen before? Can I stay with the uncomfortable feelings and see if there’s something beyond that that would lead to making something that feels different?’” Wohl’s posture of questioning and exploring has allowed her to keep learning about her own piece from everyone who produces it.

“If I knew what I was writing about when I started, I don’t know if I would need to write it,” Wohl admits. “But the writing process and the process of sharing it is really an exploration. It’s a process of discovery.” This process of discovery encompasses even the audience, from whom Wohl says she learns the most. “I always find, in a wonderful way, that the audience teaches me really what the play was about all along, and I really don’t know until then. But also, people have such different reactions and experiences, and that’s really the beauty of making something: for people to come and teach you. That’s the last piece of the puzzle, and it’s always really a revelation for me.”

Origins of insight meditation Satya Narayan Goenka, a Burmese-Indian teacher, is credited as one of the most influential modern educators of Vipassanā, or insight meditation. This ancient Theravada Buddhist meditation technique emphasizes seeing things as they really are. In 1969, after 14 years of studying under teacher Sayagyi U Ba

Khin, Goenka began teaching Vipassanā meditation in India to lay people of any social class, religious sect, or gender. Western interest in Goenka’s teachings During the 1970s, with Westerners becoming increasingly interested in Eastern religion, many American and European travelers would study with Goenka and attend

his 10-day meditation retreats. It was during this time that Sharon Salzberg, one of the first American teachers who influenced the Vipassanā movement in North America, was introduced to Goenka. In 1974, Salzberg opened one of the oldest western meditation centers, Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, along with other American

Vipassanā teachers Joseph Goldstein, Jack Kornfield, and Jacqueline Schwartz. In 1985, Goenka established the Vipassanā Research Institution at Dhamma Giri, a Vipassanā meditation center in Igatpuri, Maharashtra, India. Over the course of his life, he would teach several thousand Westerners the Vipassanā meditation.

Western Vipassanā is widely lay-based, with few of the spiritual and religious goals remaining in common with the traditional Theravada Buddhist religious context. Most western leaders of the Vipassanā movement do not identify with an organized religion or institution. Insight meditation at silent retreats Silent retreats create

an environment for individuals to practice insight meditation, an experience of selfpurification by way of self-observation. Insight meditation is a technique that eliminates suffering and creates mental purification as well as an art of living which gives positive contributions to society. Silent retreats are conducted as group retreats, allowing participants to have a gratifying connection with other participants through stillness, ultimately granting a deeper sense of connection with the self.

ou are about to experience a visit to the world of a silent retreat that will encourage you to take part in the changes the characters go through during their time on the stage. In Beth Wohl’s satiric comedy we are introduced to 6 characters who are brought together to disconnect from the world for a period of time (some do this better than others). There is an unseen “teacher” or guru who guides the program but for the most part the audience is observing the changes that the characters go through as they concentrate on themselves and others at the retreat. Small Mouth Sounds shines a worthy spotlight on mindfulness and meditation, as they are currently in the forefront, being studied and taught to many in today’s society. Experts at the Emory Brain Health Center in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences teach meditation as a cognitive technique that leads people to become more attentive to their environment and their inner thoughts. This has been shown to have lasting effects on people over time. There are ongoing imaging studies, including ones conducted at Emory, that show areas of the brain are enhanced after meditative practices and that there is an improvement in alertness and attention-related regions of the brain which ultimately change brain structure. These changes can also ultimately lead to psychological well-being and enhance the ability to cope with stress. This play shows how the characters develop empathy for one another as well as the ability to connect to the suffering that all of us feel at different times in our lives. This experience allows the audience to connect to themselves as well. As you experience the feelings that the characters are trying to convey in their effort to connect to each other, one realizes how eloquently silence can speak and how profound this can be.

She has directed nationally at the Goodman Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. LESLIE M. TAYLOR (Scenic Designer) has designed sets and costumes for over 170 productions. Most recently she designed sets and costumes for Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s premier of BUZZ. SKYLAR BURKS (Stage Manager) is delighted to continue her work at the Alliance Theatre. MIKE SCHLEIFER (Managing Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2014 as general manager, and in 2016 became managing director. While at the Alliance, Schleifer has led the administrative team on more than 50 productions and was one of the architects of the “On the Road” season, in which the Alliance produced 12 shows at 12 venues. He is proud to have started the Alliance’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and to serve on the League of Resident Theatre’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. Previously,

He is married to theater director and educator Laura Hackman and is the proud father of two boys, Jack and Ben. JODY FELDMAN (Producer/Casting Directing) began her theater career as an actress in Atlanta before moving into administration as the assistant general manager at Frank Wittowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Academy Theatre. Feldman started her career at the Alliance as Casting Director in 1991, and added Producer to her title and responsibilities in

We wanted to use our resources and the arts community we share on this campus to support one another and build each other up through our desire to achieve personal health goals. Thus the Woodruff Wellness Committee was started. Led by Stephanie Thevenin, our committee is made up of employees from all three organizations at the Woodruff and we have one goal in mind - to spread wellness, support, and education to our employee community. Through monthly meetings we devise strategies, wellness activities, build community partners, and design health goals. We use these to encourage our fellow employees to get involved, be motivated, and get the proper support on their wellness journey. In regards to physical heath, some of the programs we offer are weekly yoga classes, 5k Walk/Run challenges, and fitness classes. We also understand that wellness is not only about physical health but also mental, financial, and emotional health. With this in mind, our committee also offers classes on retirement planning, healthy cooking demonstrations, flu shot events, and mental health awareness classes. Our goal is to remove the stigma and intimidation from wellness and help people to learn that wellness is about personal growth and betterment, community, and building oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s personal confidence. Our committee is young and is still growing, but we are extremely excited about what we are building with our Woodruff family and the city of Atlanta as a whole. We look forward to the lives we will help change for the better in the process.
