Sometimes you have to wait for the good things.

Personally, I know this to be true. The second marriage turned out to be the lifetime one. The child I couldn’t possibly live without came along at an improbably late date. And toast is so much better than slightly warm bread.

Professionally, I also know this to be true. It took the Alliance a while to get that Tony, but that made it all the sweeter. The directing projects coming my way now challenge my whole being in ways the early ones never did. And, while it took time to get the planets to align, we’re producing Harmony here in Atlanta.

And let me tell you, this is worth waiting for.

The two guys responsible for this work know something about waiting as well.

A few decades back, they had every good intention of writing musicals for the stage together but then this whole total domination of popular music thing happened and they had to wait. And even when they did finally get back to their original plan, the path forward was circuitous. But those guys — Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman — cared so deeply about telling this beautiful story that they kept pushing forward.

I have to believe it’s tempting to rest on one’s laurels when your laurels are world class. But that’s not what they did. This is their proudest piece, this musical called Harmony, and they kept looking for the right place, the right time, the right team.

And they’re here. Now. With a brilliant creative team and acting company.

A final word. I’m perfectly happy to sing the praises of the Alliance (any old time, just ask) — but we’re just a part of the reason Mssrs. Manilow and Sussman brought their work here. You’re the other part. It’s out there in the wider world that Atlanta has become a remarkable place to develop new work. That our audiences embrace new art with enthusiasm, sophistication, and a deep sense of their role in creating a new history.

Manilow-Sussman songwriting team celebrate a dream come true, finally!

By Bret Love Barry Manilow and longtime songwriting partner Bruce Sussman have dreamed of writing Broadway-style musicals together since they first met. More than 40 years later, the Alliance Theatre production of Harmony means that dream is at last coming true.

As Sussman recalls, he was in grad school and working part time as a waiter while Manilow (who had written the score for off-Broadway’s The Drunkard) was gigging as an audition musician. The first song they wrote together — the American Bandstand theme — led to what’s

described as a “surprising left turn” into pop music. But theatre was always their first love.

“What we loved about theatre,” Sussman says, “was the opportunity to write for characters and situations, and to have the musical numbers move the narrative along.

These are the things that excite us.”

“If it’s good, theatre is the most thrilling thing I’ve ever been involved with,” adds Manilow.

“Everyone will tell you, that is what keeps us coming back. When the curtain goes up and that first song works, there’s just nothing like it.”

The duo’s remarkable success — Manilow had five albums on the Billboard charts simultaneously in the late 1970s and charted 25 Top 40 singles between 1974 and 1983 — delayed their dream.

Then, in the late 1990s, Sussman read a New York Times review of The Comedian Harmonists, a four-hour documentary about a six-man vocal group that found fame and fortune in Germany until the Nazis banned them in 1934. He went to a screening of the film and was “blown away.”

“The thing about this group is that they were so huge,” Manilow says.

“They were the Beatles of their generation — the first boy band.

How did we not know about this group? They were as funny as the Marx Brothers, as complicated musically as Manhattan Transfer, and we had never heard of them before. That’s the story!”

The project challenged them.

Sussman did research in Germany; the two spent a year studying late1920s and early-1930s music. They worked on the project off and on for nearly 15 years. When it came time to mount a stage production, they decided to focus on perfecting the show rather than raising millions of dollars to put it on Broadway.

“We called the main number and asked to speak with Susan Booth, whom we didn’t know,” Sussman continues. “Lord knows what they thought. We said, ‘Hi, it’s Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman.’ They connected us to Susan and she picked up the phone and said — and I quote — ‘Please tell me you’re calling about Harmony!’ By the time the call was done, we had a commitment.”

“We’ve had such a rough road on this work,” Manilow confesses.

“Susan read it and listened to the score, and she flipped out over it.

It was such a beautiful phone call because she was so enthusiastic and said all the right things. For Bruce and I, it was so important to hear someone go off like that on a work that is so important to us. There was no doubt that this was the place we wanted to be.”

Bret Love, an Atlanta-based freelancer, writes for more than a dozen national and international publications. He also does improv with Jackpie at Relapse Theatre.

“We wanted to go to a regional theatre because they’re about the work,” Sussman says, “and commercial considerations are on the back burner. We made a list of theatres we knew about, whose work we thought was terrific.”

“We looked up the Alliance Theatre on the Internet!” Manilow interjects.

Recent opera credits include Tigrane at Opéra de Nice, Dido and Aeneas with the Boston Early Music Festival, the world premiere of Charles Wuorinen’s It Happens Like This at the Guggenheim Museum Theater and Oliver Knussen’s Higglety Pigglety Pop! at the Tanglewood Music Center. With music director Ted Taylor, he has created several cabarets of American songbook repertoire. Future engagements include new productions of Handel’s Acis and Galatea directed by Mark Morris at Lincoln Center, Aggipina with Opera Omaha and Monteverdi’s Orfeo at the Berlin Staatsoper with dancer-choreographer Sasha Waltz. Doug can be heard on the Grammy-nominated recording of Psyché with the Boston Early Music Festival (2008). He trained at Yale School of Music, New England Conservatory and Shakespeare & Company.

profiles ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION founded in 1913, represents more than 45,000 actors and stage managers in the United States. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. BRUCE SUSSMAN (Book and Lyrics) is the co-author of more than 200 published and recorded songs written for dozens of artists, films, TV programs and stage musicals. The majority of these projects were written with his collaborator of 40 years, Barry Manilow. For the stage, he co-authored the scores for Ted Tally’s Coming Attractions (Outer Critics Circle Award, Pulitzer Prize nominee) and Wendy Wasserstein’s Miami, both produced off-Broadway by Andre Bishop at Playwrights Horizons in New York. His songs have been featured in numerous stage revues including The Madwoman of Central Park West, Tuxedos for Hire and the long-running off-Broadway and London productions of Whoop-Dee-Doo! (Drama Desk Award, Obie Award). With Mr. Manilow, he wrote the scores for the animated feature films The Pebble and the Penguin, Thumbelina and Disney’s Oliver and Company.

He is particularly proud to have written a song with Mr. Manilow for the televised bicentennial celebration of the U.S. Constitution. The song, “Let Freedom Ring,” was later performed at the televised Inaugural Gala for President Bill Clinton. His songs have been featured in more than two dozen feature films and have been recorded by an array of pop, jazz, country and international artists, earning Grammy awards and multiple Gold and Platinum records.

BARRY MANILOW (Music) is an internationally known star whose talents and success have reached every facet of entertainment. He has sold 80 million records. Rolling Stone called him “the Showman of our generation.” Manilow is a Grammy, Emmy and Tony award winner, as well as an Academy Award nominee. His theatrical roots go back to his days in the mailroom at CBS in New York, when at 18, he wrote the entire original score for a musical adaptation of the melodrama The Drunkard. The show ran off-Broadway for eight years. He made his film scoring debut in 1994 with the Warner Bros. animated film Thumbelina, for which he contributed songs written with his Harmony collaborator Bruce Sussman. His second animated feature, The Pebble and the Penguin (MGM), also featured songs by Manilow and Sussman. Copacabana – The Musical (written with Sussman) played a sold-out run in London’s West End for 18 months, toured the United States and is touring worldwide. Manilow was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. He recently finished a sold-out six-week run in New York at the St. James Theatre. The show, called Manilow on Broadway, received glowing reviews and played to wildly enthusiastic audiences. He considers Harmony the most rewarding creative experience of his career.

TONY SPECIALE (Director) is the founder of Plastic Theatre — conceiving, co-authoring and directing the world premiere of Unnatural Acts (Classic Stage Company, 2011, a Drama Desk nominee for outstanding play and director; GLAAD Media Award nominee for outstanding NY theatre Broadway & off-Broadway; off-Broadway Alliance Award nominee for best new play). Other directing credits at Classic Stage Company include A Midsummer Night’s Dream featuring Bebe Neuwirth, Christina Ricci and Taylor Mac; Macbeth; Twelfth Night; Romeo and Juliet; and The Taming of the Shrew.

Tony’s work has been seen at Actors Theatre of Louisville, The Gym at Judson, Theatre Row, New York Musical Theatre Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, HERE Arts Center and La MaMa. He is the former associate artistic director at Classic Stage Company, studied musical theatre at the Boston Conservatory and holds an MFA in directing from Columbia University. profiles JODY FELDMAN (Associate Producer) began her theatre career as an actress in Atlanta before moving into administration as the Assistant General Manager at Frank Wittow’s Academy Theatre. Jody is currently the Associate Producer at the Alliance Theatre where she started in 1991 as Casting Director.

While at the Alliance, Jody has cast and produced over 200 LORT B, D and TYA productions including a wide range of world premiere dramas such as The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, What I Learned in Paris by Pearl Cleage, Broke by Janece Shafer, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and ten years of Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition winning plays, as well as world and regional premiere musicals such as Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act: The Musical, Bring It On: The Musical, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, and most recently Zorro. Booth (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/ Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, created local producing partnerships and has overseen regional collaborative productions as well as commercial partnerships on projects including Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’da Noise, Bring in ’da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. As a director, she has worked at theatres including the Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern and DePaul universities, and serves as adjunct faculty with Emory University. She is the past president of the board of directors for Theatre Communications Group (the national service organization for the field), is on the artistic board of the Steinberg Charitable Trust in New York and is a trustee of Denison University. Questions — When are we just ourselves, singular individuals? When are we the member of a group of our choosing? When are we a member of a group defined for us? Harmony plays with the issues of identity, love, and hate against the gathering clouds of one of humanity’s greatest failures. As with any great theatre, Harmony mixes healthy doses of silliness and truth tinged with bitter sadness and ultimately binds together stories of lives with the only emotion that can last — love. Chance may guide our individual lives, but the world’s great tragedies were the result of decisions and most often inactions.

Perhaps we in the here and now will learn from history; perhaps we will bring it into our minds when faced with our present day opportunities to bring greater harmony to our world. We will, I hope, we must.

Comedian Harmonists Harmony is inspired by the true story of the Comedian Harmonists, a remarkable German singing group that was the toast of Europe from the late 1920s through the early years of World War II. The group’s musical brilliance and comic talent were a welcome diversion from the harsh war reparations, economic collapse, unemployment, decaying moral order and ceaseless political turmoil that enveloped Germany between the two World Wars. Over a few short years, this poor, unknown group rocketed to fame and international acclaim. It is sadly ironic that the triumph of this tightly knit vocal group coincided with the ascent of such devastating discord and dark political tyranny. Because of this timing, the Comedian Harmonists’ story, like those of so many people living in Germany at the time, has been nearly lost to history.

In retelling their story, one is reminded of how difficult it is to see that time from the perspective of those living then. In 2013, the reality

of the Nazi horror seems painfully evident. However, until the late 1930s many Germans did not consider this struggling, extreme political faction a very big threat. For a people who had lived through so much political upheaval and social madness, the potential danger of this upstart party seemed remote. Even after the National Socialists began amassing power many German citizens, Jews and Gentiles alike, chose to stay in Germany. For many, the strife at home seemed less dangerous than immigrating to a foreign country.

“In the beginning, few believed that Hitler would last long: it seemed impossible that such insane rule could. Nor were the Nazi organizations remarkable at first for their unity, or for their efficiency in enforcing regulations. Yellow stars and other markings like armbands, didn’t come until much later—not until

1941,” remembers one Berlin Jewess.

I didn’t leave until 1939, “ and almost right up until then restrictions were either not applied very strictly, or it was possible to circumvent them. I remember going to a ball, and at it an SA man in full uniform asked me to dance.

What could I do? I danced with him. He was quite a young man.

After we’d been dancing for a while I said to him.

‘Isn’t your racial instinct telling you anything about me?’ He blushed as red as a beetroot and said, ‘You mustn’t think we’re all like that, Miss.’

But that was 1934.

The events of the Comedian Harmonists’ career are dramatized here largely as they occurred.

Some license has been taken with regard to chronology and locale.

Greater license has been taken with regard to the characterization of the women, and this for several reasons. Most notably, much less has been documented about them.

Also, there were several more of them. Some of the Comedian Harmonists were married several times. Ruth, for example, is a composite character – though Erwin Bootz (“Chopin”) did indeed marry a Jewish woman during the early years of the Third Reich. We thought it appropriate, therefore, to give her a fictionalized name. Mary, on the other hand, is dramatized very much as we believe her to have been. The characters of historical merit – politicians, performers, men of science and letters – all indeed factored in the story. The uncanny meeting on the train, dramatized in our second act, happened. alliancetheatre.org

It has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act, Come Fly Away, Bring It On and the U.S. premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings. The Alliance nurtures the careers of playwrights through its Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing a premiere for the winner and national networking opportunities for four finalists.

The Acting Program and Education Department reaches nearly 50,000 students annually through performances, classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives.

The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance offers community education classes for all ages and levels of theatre interest, and adult student productions of unproduced plays in developments.

Active in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatre techniques to help students learn through storytelling and problem-solving.

The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include GA Wolf Trap, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K – 2nd grade, and Dramaturgy K-12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Twice recognized by the U.S. Education Department as leaders in arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access.
