ast summer, Second City Chicago writer Seth Weitberg and head writer/director Matt Hovde were on a mission: Find out what’s funny about Atlanta so they could create a show for Alliance Theatre audiences. I sat down with them to talk about what they discovered about Atlanta.
education, the clergy, older Atlanta citizens and younger Atlanta citizens. We’re really getting an opportunity to interact with the community in many different ways, which is important to us, given the breadth and depth of social and political issues that we want to incorporate into the show.
Tell me about this trip. How do you go about gathering materials and finding things you want to parody? Matt Hovde: The Alliance has such a good relationship with our producers back in Chicago, they teamed up to provide us with what we’re calling an immersion experience that has enabled us to talk to a really broad swath of people in and around Atlanta that are involved with the mayoral race,
So what are some of your impressions of Atlanta? Hovde: We’re definitely interested in some of the political issues that are hitting the town right now. We’ve talked to a lot of people about the mayoral race, about what issues [outgoing Mayor Shirley Franklin] is leaving for the next mayor to solve and what issues she’s
EncoreAtlantA.com
solved. One of the things we’ve dealt with on this trip is the Beltway Project, which is really interesting due to its length and complexity. Seth Weitberg: Everyone seems to have an opinion on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” so we need to learn more about that. One thing that the show dealt with last year that we’re still witness to is the transitory nature of an Atlanta citizen and how many folks are not native Atlantans and what that does to the cultural ethos of a city. Understanding that balance and how that plays into the traditions is really important for us to grasp. Have you ever thought about having an Atlanta-only cast of actors or having local writers help you write the show? Hovde: Blending the two communities is a huge goal of ours, and I think we’re even closer to that this year. Last year, we hired two local actors and brought four from Chicago, and one of the Chicago actors was from Atlanta, originally. This year, we’ve brought three Chicago actors, and we’re hiring three local actors. Mixing the actors enables us to keep our stylistic voice and intellectual/ blue collar satire point of view.
How do you take all this material you’ve gathered and make a sketch comedy/improvisation show out of it? Weitberg: It will have some archive material, but also have material that Matt and I are writing. We are here to immerse ourselves so ... we can develop material that feels of the city. Once we head into rehearsals, we will tweak some of the writing so it will feel more in the voice of the cast, [who] will have input as well. Hovde: A Second City show is put together like a giant puzzle with different scenes and different actors with their own distinct styles talking about completely unrelated topics. Each scene has a unique length, and the goal is to build a two-hour show that keeps moving, keeps every actor visible, showcases different strengths and still keeps the audience guessing what comes next. DIRECTOR’S NOTE Second City turns 50 years old this year, which makes this an especially fun time to be creating new shows and reconnecting with old friends. Many unique and talented individuals have played at Second City over the years, but while traditional theater often divides roles into lead, supporting and ensemble roles, at the Second City, ensemble is the be all and end all. It is the notion that we all work together to produce a show that reflects our collective strengths and talents, and that we share this creation equally. And that has been the best part of my experience with the Alliance. To put it bluntly, I love working with people here. Our collaboration both this year and

last has enriched our Second City family and strengthened our creativity. Like all Second City revues, this show will feature a variety of themes and subjects, but the final product is a unique reflection of the collective talents of both our Chicago and Atlanta production teams. why we love the alliance Why Atlanta, now? Atlanta during the holidays is a joyful noise of Christmas humor, cooking, traditions and slightly teary sentiment. Upstairs, the Alliance offers our beloved holiday A Christmas Carol production. Downstairs, the Alliance offers a respite from all that holiday spirit. Come down to laugh, snort, chortle and get ready for the humorous side of late December. Second City will allow us to celebrate and laugh at our warm weather, our need to wear down coats when it’s 50 degrees out, pink pigs, trees on malls and artificial snow.
Synopsis A two-act sketch comedy revue that features classic scenes from The Second City archives as well as original material created specifically for and about Atlanta, The Second City: Peach Drop, Stop and Roll is a thoroughly original spoof of the city and its colorful community. From Buckhead living to Coca-Cola, from The Varsity to Spaghetti Junction, The Second City cast lovingly mocks all things ATL.

he Second City has come back to Atlanta, this time during the holidays. Once again, the writing team sent in from Chicago spent four days exploring the city, beginning with Atlanta holiday traditions. The Alliance called on our audience for ideas, anecdotes and memories, and the following are select highlights from a generous group of ideas they submitted. These seeds were the beginnings of tonight’s show, the dramaturgical underpinnings of hilarity. Thank you to everyone who shared their Atlanta holiday stories with us! Below is a sampling of the material we received: “The tree on top of Lenox Mall has always been a strange sight — like a 30-ft. tall Charlie Brown tree.”
roasting marshmallows, drinking hot chocolate, and buying quality tacky ornaments at gift shop at the end.”
“[I saw] a woman dressed in a big holiday sweater with jingle bells go off on an old lady for breaking in line in the bathroom of the Fox Theatre. Thought she was going to cut her (we were all there to see The Rockettes) with the grand finale of the birth of Jesus. Happy holidays one and all!”
“Props story: Theft at the holidays! Every year, random props are stolen off the edge of the [Alliance Theatre] stage [during the annual A Christmas Carol production]. Apparently, a few patrons misunderstand what the phrase “our holiday gift to Atlanta” really means. Some folks think it means help yourself to our [stuff].”
