ennis in Nablus takes place in the spring/early summer of 1939, in Nablus under the British Palestinian mandate. The British Empire took over Palestine from the Ottoman Empire after World War I and remained, occupying the territory, until 1948. The play takes place in the waning days of an Arab revolt that began in 1936 and almost succeeded in driving the British out. The summer of 1939 was a tense time in Europe as well, with Germany, having already occupied Austria and

Czechoslovakia, amassing arms and men for the surprise September attack on Poland. With nationalism and anti-colonialism on the rise, and the European empires on the edge of extinction, 1939 was a year that marked the beginning of a period of great tension, marked by conflict and momentous global change. It is amidst this historical moment that Tennis in Nablus takes place. The role of the history play is to look back and animate a historical period for contemporary audiences. The great

East as well as the rise of a Palestinian national consciousness. The years 1936-1939 saw a revolt among the indigenous Arabs of Palestine against British rule and growing Jewish immigration from 1933 onwards. Promises of Arab independence were not kept by the British who were also promising Palestine to Zionist leaders. By 1939, the British had succeeded in brutally smashing the Arab rebellion.

Palestine was under British rule from 1917-1947. During this time, Jewish immigration to Palestine increased dramatically as a result of the growth of the Zionist movement, the Balfour Declaration of 1917 (which promised a Jewish homeland in Palestine), as well as growing anti-Semitism in Europe. This period coincided with the rise of Arab nationalism across the Middle

About the Kendeda Graduate Playwright Competition

history plays (Shakespeare’s Henry V, Schiller’s Mary Stuart and Brecht’s Mother Courage for example) allow us to examine perceptively and with the 20/20 vision of hindsight a complicated political time not our own. Tennis in Nablus belongs in this proud tradition. Its characters cut across a wide spectrum of a diverse and global society with the humor and tragedy of real life, portraying a large world onstage with humanity and complexity, ideally using the past to inspire hope for the future. Although the Zionist militias in Palestine had been incorporated into the British army in order to defeat the Palestinian rebels, the Zionists would also break with the British after the onset of WWII in response to the London-issued White Paper which challenged Zionist nationalist aims by putting quotas on Jewish immigration from Europe. The Palestinian independence movement never recovered from the defeat of the rebellion in 1939.

The Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition is a one-of-a-kind national competition that transitions student playwrights to the world of professional theatre. The grand prize for the winner of the competition is a professional production at the Alliance Theatre. Now in its sixth year, the competition has become a national leader in discovering the latest playwriting talent while aiding local theaters to create ongoing relationships with Kendeda winners and finalists. This year’s finalists: blu by Virginia Grise. Monday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m. A woman who discovers the love and support of another woman in the face of her husband’s incarceration and the death of her son in Iraq. No One But You by Paul David Young. why we love the alliance Why Atlanta, now? Tennis in Nablus is a genre bending play, thoughtful, hilarious, historical with contemporary resonances. It is witty and sharp while addressing a challenging historical period with sensitivity. The work is incredibly theatrical, while using a family story to invite conversation about larger geopolitical issues. We hope it will start many different kinds of conversations in our audience, both about the history and current situations in the Middle East, and also about the role of historical understanding in the contemporary world. The play is one we bring very proudly to Atlanta.

Synopsis Tennis in Nablus is the sixth winner of the nationally recognized Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition. Written by emerging playwright Ismail Khalidi, this World Premiere provides an unexpected view of Palestine, circa 1939. Tennis in Nablus looks at Palestine’s embattled status through the eyes of a lifelong rebel, his wife (a writer of anti-colonial tracts) and his enterprising young nephew. It is a play about allegiance, struggle and crisis, where events and people are not what they seem. Khalidi was the finalist for Williamstown’s prestigious Weissberger Award, awarded the Goldberg Prize in Playwriting (Tisch), as well as the Quest for Peace Award from the Kennedy Center (ACTF), and a second place prize for the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Award.
