between us

Meet Ken Lin. Ken’s one of those crazy-smart young things who could work in absolutely any medium, but — lucky for us — decided he wanted to say what he had to say in the world of theatre. We first met Ken when his political thriller “…said, Said” won our National Graduate Playwriting Competition’s second season. It was a work of astonishing ambition and intersecting stories of family, history and politics. We loved producing the play, and had the very strong feeling that here was a writer that would be making a mark on the American Theatre. I love it when we’re right. If you flip a few pages into your program, you’ll come across Ken’s biography. You’ll wonder how many decades he’s been in the field to have those kinds of credits. And then you’ll do the math on what a short period of time he’s actually been doing this, and you’ll be gobsmacked. But even better than the reading and the math I just suggested you do, how about this? How about you lean into a play called Warrior Class — a play The New York Times called “an incisive work of crackling authenticity” — and welcome its author back to Atlanta?

POLITICS

In ‘Warrior Class,’ playwright Kenneth Lin exposes those back-room machinations

By Kathy Janich In 2007, The Dramatist magazine named playwright Kenneth Lin one of “50 to Watch.” So far, he hasn’t disappointed. The New York-based Lin, now in his mid- 30s, married and the father of a toddler son, is one of the most widely produced Asian-American playwrights in the country. At the moment, he has four plays in some stage of development, is creating a new limited series “American Way” for USA Networks and is a staff writer on Netflix’s “House of Cards,” starring Kevin Spacey. His ”…said, Said,” you might recall, received its world premiere at the Alliance Theatre in 2006, as winner of the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition. With Warrior Class, he returns to celebrate the 10th anniversary of that groundbreaking program, which helps graduate school playwrights move from academia into the real world. “Ken is not only a great storyteller,” says Mark Bly, Lin’s mentor and

8

ENCOREATLANTA.COM

one-time instructor at the Yale School of Drama. “He tackles subjects that challenge us as artists and audience members. He creates rigorous stories for the stage that raise questions about our responsibilities as human beings to our fellow human beings.” Warrior Class, which follows the surging political career of a young ChineseAmerican lawmaker with Obama-like magnetism, debuted in July 2012 at off-Broadway’s Second Stage Theatre. Critics called it “taut” and “provocative,” “smart, tight and topical.” Even The New York Times liked it. A lot. Lin himself says, “I’m interested in politics in terms of how an ethical society is engineered.” By email, he shared a few other insights: Question: Where did the idea for this play come from? Answer: I began writing Warrior Class when I noticed an interesting phenomenon within myself. Whenever

Opposite: the New York State Capitol building in Albany, NY; above, inside the New York State Assembly.

I heard a news report about a gunman that went on a mass rampage, a little part of myself worried that the shooter would be a young man of Asian descent. This scared the hell out of me, and I promised myself to always tell stories about what terrifies me to the core. Q: Why this story? Why now? A: America is changing, demographically, at a lightning pace. There are more languages spoken here than have ever been spoken before. Crowds looks different. Media looks different. We are stretching and growing as a nation. Length comes with pain. Let’s talk about it.

Photos: Matt H. Wade

Q: How did your interest in politics start? A: I am interested in people. There’s people micro, and people macro. Politics is people macro. Power, lust, seduction is people micro. Fold it together and good things happen onstage that talk about who we are individually, and who we are as a people. Q: What common thread, or idea, that runs through your plays? A: In looking at my body of work, I find

myself talking a lot about confinement or ensnarement. ”…said, Said,” is partially set in a prison; Po Boy Tango is about a man who can only bear to see his mother through a television screen; Intelligence-Slave is set in a prison; Fallow traces a journey on the way to see someone in a prison; Warrior Class is about the complicated philosophical, intellectual and personal ensnarements that are involved in a political career. Q: What does Ken Lin bring to a play that another playwright might not? A: I am a child of immigrants who ferociously trekked throughout the world, surviving political strife to come to America. I like a good fight, and I especially like them when there are serious stakes involved. I’m from a restaurant family, so I have a pathological need to feed you. Hopefully, it doesn’t taste like anything you’re accustomed to being served.

For more insight into Kenneth Lin’s work, read a longer version of this story on the Encore Atlanta website at www.encoreatlanta.com.

KENDEDA TURNS

10

Anniversary season features new plays from old friends and 2014’s winner

The Hertz Stage this season is home to an epic conflagration of imagination, talent and original voices. The four-show lineup introduces Atlanta audiences to new work by some of America’s brightest young playwrights — three old friends and one new one. Together we’re celebrating a milestone for the Alliance/Kendeda National Playwriting Competition, an idea that took root 10 years ago and has grown stronger and more vibrant than we could ever have imagined. This oneof-a-kind national competition helps student playwrights in the country’s leading graduate programs make the transition to professional theatre. We happily introduce you to 2014 winner Madhuri Shekar, from the University of Southern California, and welcome back Tarell Alvin McCraney (In the Red and Brown Water, 2008), Kenneth Lin (…,” said Said, 2006) and Meg Miroshnik (The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls, 2012). Each is sharing a new piece with us. Alliance audiences have already seen McCraney’s Choir Boy, a coming-of-age story about a charismatic boy at an all-boys private prep school for African-Americans. McCraney’s work has been across the country and in London and, in September, he was awarded a prestigious MacArthur “genius” grant. The rest of the lineup: Warrior Class. Through Nov. 17. Lin’s critically acclaimed political thriller features an Asian-American candidate who’s being groomed for a big Republican race — unless an ex-girlfriend gets in his way. Lin have become one of the most widely commissioned and produced Asian-American writers in the country. In Love and Warcraft. Jan. 31-Feb. 23, 2014. Evie, a master of relationships, is the focal point in Shekar’s world premiere. She has a waiting list of classmates willing to pay her top dollar to fix their relationships. How does she do it? By using the skills and tactics she learned playing World of Warcraft. The Tall Girls. March 7-30, 2014. Sometimes basketball is the only way out. Even for a girl. Even in the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. When a mysterious man gets off the train in Poor Prairie, a few things are clear. He’s teaching at the high school, he knows the game and he has the only inflated basketball in town. Another world premiere from Miroshnik. These writers are among 50 extraordinary artists to have come through the Kendeda program, which, this season includes 12 readings/workshops by other alumni. Experiences have already included an exciting portrait of a drag family hosted by the Jungle and a reading of a play about dementia that brought together Atlanta’s caregiving community. Chicago newspaperman and humorist Peter Finley Dunne graduated last in his high school class, but that didn’t stop him from coining one of the bestknown phrases about American politics: “Politics ain’t bean bag,” Dunne wrote sometime in the 1890s. Now in 2013 we have Warrior Class, Kenneth Lin’s modern-day political cautionary tale to confirm Dunne’s observation. Lin has created a scenario where nothing is as it seems, no motives are pure, and there are no good guys for whom to cheer. It’s a world of sharp elbows and back-room maneuvering. And to a guy who covered American politics for more than 20 years, it feels pretty damned real. Politics indeed ain’t bean bag ... and the characters in Warrior Class are pitching hardballs high and inside. Bill Nigut, 30-year Alliance Theatre patron

SYNOPSIS

Warrior Class centers on Julius Weishan Lee, a New York assemblyman who’s been dubbed “The Republican Obama.” Lee, the son of Chinese immigrants and a decorated war veteran, seems to have a limitless political career ahead of him. But when someone from his past threatens to reveal a college transgression, he must decide how far he’ll go to keep the incident out of the public eye. Whatever his decision, the consequences may be costly.

Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance Children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher Corps. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact Shana Orr at shana.orr@ woodruffcenter.org or call 404.733.4761.

She can also connect your loved ones to resources throughout the community. Your Nurse Navigator will manage coordination among your doctors, help you understand your treatment options, and simply listen to your concerns. WellStar Nurse Navigators are available to all cancer patients and their families. To learn more about cancer treatment at WellStar, call 770-956-STAR (7827) or visit wellstar.org.

We believe you are stronger than cancer. The vision of WellStar Health System is to deliver world-class healthcare through our hospitals, physicians and services.
