“Do you not love this? Is this not heavenly?” Thus exclaims young Louisa Geller, coming upon the Cotton States Exposition — a slice of the whole world that’s taken up residence in Piedmont Park for 100 days. For a girl whose life has hitherto been circumscribed by the familiar and the known, those 100 days of 1895 provide a window to places beyond imagining. Suddenly she knows how little she knows — and her heart is filled with wonder. Wonder is a dazzling and precious thing that we all too easily assume is the province only of the young. We grow up — some of us — and clad ourselves in cynical tones of “been there, done that, heard that story.” And we forget how much there is still to know. Still to find. Still to evoke gasps of discovery. Inside our own terrain, even, there are pursuits and passions not only untapped, but even unimagined. We need only the nudge that a postcard can offer. Or a travel ad. Or a play, maybe. My friend Janece Shaffer is full of wonder. You sit in conversation with her, and I guarantee you, at some point she will suddenly lean forward and explode with a “so listen to what I just found out!” or “Wait till you hear who I just met!” And this fierce appetite for discovery pervades not only her every conversation, but, too, every play she writes. She eats curiosity for breakfast and that’s what makes her plays, her stories and her characters a kind of tonic for the wonder-deprived soul. Welcome to Atlanta. To 1895. To then, to now, and to the wonderful world of The Geller Girls.

When the Whole World Came toAtlanta The Geller Girls playwright revisits a passionate 100 days in our city’s history

By Kathy Janich Justin Bieber. Yes, playwright Janece Shaffer’s journey with The Geller Girls, set in 1895 Atlanta, began with the Biebs. Her eighth-grade daughter, tasked with a social studies project, wanted to write about the pop music phenom. Shaffer was less enthusiastic. “I just didn’t want her to do Justin Bieber,” Shaffer says, “so I started pitching ideas.” One was the 1895 Cotton States and International Exposition, which brought some 800,000 people to what we now know as Piedmont Park.

12

ENCOREATLANTA.COM

Shaffer’s daughter didn’t buy the idea, but the playwright became obsessed with the images she pulled up on her computer, and a New York Times story in which everything in Atlanta was described as “charming” and “enchanting.” “I started reading and daydreaming,” says Shaffer, a nationally produced, awarding-winning playwright and an Atlanta native. The story came together for her during one holiday vacation. While her daughter slept till noon every day, Shaffer wrote. That was three years ago, and pieces of her play came from everywhere — a trip to Charleston with husband Bill

Nigut, the former TV newsman turned producer. A 2005 book called Women in Atlanta, which included a photo of young women playing basketball. One girl, ball tucked beneath her arm, looked straight at the camera.

days did, when she was “hold-yourhand little” and would see Theater of the Stars shows on Sunday afternoons with her grandmother. She remembers seeing Paul Lynde in The Pajama Game and that each outing ended with a trip to Morrison’s.

She became Shaffer’s main character. “This play was vivid from the start,” she says, “probably because of all those photographs. But I knew these people. This play was delicious, and I just couldn’t wait to get to it. The whole world came to Atlanta for 100 days. And I kept imagining, I kept wondering how, if I was living then, would it be if the whole world came to town? “I’m not a historian,” she says, “so I took bits and pieces of things I really love. I know Atlanta was famous for its street corners. Women would gather at one, men at another. And there were really visible representations of the Civil War — bullets, shells.” The Exposition itself, Shaffer says, was a marketing gambit by Atlanta businessmen and the newspaper, a sign to the world that the post-Civil War capital of the South was open for business. Shaffer’s connection to theater doesn’t go back quite that far. But it began long before her playwriting

Her playwrighting career began in 1999 with He Looks Great in a Hat, her first world premiere at the Alliance Theatre. The Geller Girls is her fifth here. In between came Bluish (2006), Managing Maxine (2008) and Broke (2011). She’s written about romance and religion, identity, race and motherhood, sex over 70 and the fallout of the Great Recession. She’s also been produced at Theatrical Outfit (Brownie Points, 2010) and Horizon Theatre (The Genes of Beauty Queens, 2001). Nationally, her work’s been seen in Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle and Washington, D.C., and at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Asolo Rep in Sarasota, Fla., among others. But The Geller Girls, her first period piece, proves once again how firmly rooted she is in writing about her hometown. “I am Atlanta born and bred. I am a product of this community, these schools, UGA,” she says. ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

cast Setting: Atlanta, Georgia. 1895 Synopsis: In 1895, The Cotton States and International Exposition floods the city of Atlanta for 100 days with cannibals, Hoochie Coochie Girls, and Suffragettes forever upending the lives of the Geller sisters—17 year-old Louisa and her older sister Rosalee. In spite of being nearly engaged since she was six years old, Louisa is suddenly captivated by a handsome New York visitor who proposes not marriage but college, and Rosalee, who is bothered by the expo, is busy hounding her father for one thing — a dress shop of her own. After a window on the world has been thrown open, can the simple lives that Louisa and Rosalee have always imagined for themselves be enough? And if not, can they escape convention and unyielding family expectations to pursue a life of their own? discover us discover us. discover you. The Geller Girls accomplishes one of the primary purposes of art — to remind us that there is no such thing as a normal family. Without such regular external validation, we would all go mad. I often wonder why children of established families leave a wonderful city like Atlanta for browner pastures. Siblings raised in the same environment have very different familial experiences and memories. Could family dysfunction be an evolutionary trait to ensure dispersal of our genetic material? At the Atlanta History Center we encourage and value works of contemporary art that use the past as a method of interpretation to add significance and meaning to our modern lives. We integrate theatre into our own tours and public programs as an effective means of surfacing difficult historical and contemporary issues that generate an emotional response to create perspective and stimulate lasting memories.

Kendeda-winning playwrights onstage this season include (from left Tarell Alvin McCraney (Choir Boy); Kenneth Lin (Warrior Class); Madhuri Shekar (In Love and Warcraft) and Meg Miroshnik (The Tall Girls).

KENDEDA TURNS 10 Anniversary season features new plays from old friends and 2014’s winner

The Alliance Theatre’s Hertz Stage this season is home to an epic conflagration of imagination, talent and original voices. The four-show lineup introduces Atlanta audiences to new work by some of America's brightest young playwrights — three old friends and one new one. The lineup celebrates a milestone for the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, an idea that took root 10 years ago and has grown stronger and more vibrant each season. This one-ofa-kind national competition helps student playwrights in the country's leading graduate programs make the transition to professional theatre. This year’s winner, Madhuri Shekar, comes from the University of Southern California. Returning to the Alliance are Meg Miroshnik (The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls, 2012), Tarell Alvin McCraney (In the Red and Brown Water, 2008) and Kenneth Lin (…,” said Said, 2006). Hertz Stage audiences have already seen McCraney's Choir Boy, a coming-of-age story about a gay young man in an all-boys private prep school for African-Americans, and Lin’s Warrior Class, a political thriller about a charismatic Asian-American Republican with ex-girlfriend trouble. Still to come: In Love and Warcraft. Jan. 31-Feb. 23. Evie, a master of relationships, is the focal point in Shekar's world premiere. She has a waiting list of classmates willing to pay her top dollar to fix their relationships. How does she do it? By using the skills and tactics she learned while becoming one of the best World of Warcraft players on the planet. The Tall Girls. March 7-30. Sometimes basketball is the only way out. Even for a girl. Even in the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. When a mysterious young man gets off the train in Poor Prairie, a few things are clear. He’s teaching at the high school, he knows the game and he has the only inflated basketball in town. Another world premiere from Miroshnik. These four writers are part of a group of 50 artists to have come through the Kendeda/Alliance competition. The anniversary season also includes 12 readings and workshops by other alumni winners and finalists. Experiences have already included an exciting portrait of a drag family hosted by the Jungle and 570 people sobbing through a mother/daughter reunion in the face of dementia. For details, please email celise.kalke@woodruffcenter.org or check Alliance.theatre.org for details.

about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre has become the leading theatre of the Southeast, creating the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse audiences. The Alliance values excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. Reaching more than 200,000 patrons annually, the Alliance delivers programming that challenges adult and youth audiences to think critically and care deeply. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, the Alliance received the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award in recognition of excellence. The Alliance, known for its artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, has premiered more than 80 original productions including Tony winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. It has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act, Come Fly Away, Bring It On and the U.S. premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings. The Alliance nurtures the careers of playwrights through its Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing a premiere for the winner and national networking opportunities for four finalists. The Acting Program and Education Department reach nearly 50,000 students annually through performances, classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives. The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance offers community education classes for all ages and levels of theatre interest, and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development. Active in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatre techniques to help students learn through storytelling and problemsolving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include GA Wolf Trap, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K — 2nd grade, and Dramaturgy K-12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Twice recognized by the U.S. Education Department as leaders in arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access. The Alliance delivers the finest talent, art and educational opportunities for Atlanta audiences — proving once again that this is where great theatre lives. alliancetheatre.org or 404.733.4650

Girls Gone Worldly When the act of imagining a choice is a radical act, what choices will young women make?

By Celise Kalke

In Janece Shaffer’s The Geller Girls, the playwright invites us to look backward to 1895. When Atlanta was a much smaller city, everyone within a social class knew each other, and the cultural life of Georgia still resided along the coast, in Savannah. Atlanta had risen from the ashes of the Civil War still a railroad hub and commercial leader but not yet an international city. Then, almost 100 years before the Atlanta Olympics of

1996, a city of some 80,000 people invited 800,000 visitors to the Cotton States Exhibition. Atlanta was on the map and getting ready to start chasing its present-day significance. Shaffer has chosen two young women also poised on the brink of change to portray this exciting time in Atlanta’s history: Louisa, everything a young Southern lady of the time should be, and Rosalee, who is straining at the bit

and ready to break loose. Shaffer looks at this time almost before the suffragette movement, and asks what choices young women would make when the act of imagining a choice was a radical act. Especially in a commercially stable, upwardly mobile family like the Gellers, where steadiness and family pride demanded following a prescribed life path. This is not a new story, it’s the stuff of romance and coming-of-age novels. In Shaffer’s hands looking backward to simpler choices in a less global world presents 1895 mores as deliciously comfortable and warm, and breaking free seems terrifying. Except when the play makes moving seem exciting and adventurous and comfort seem constraining and rigid. The genius of Shaffer’s tale is presenting options as true options, without the playwright loading the bases for her characters. The Geller Girls celebrates the history of Atlanta and the history of America. It is a passionate experience with complicated characters and real insight into the years after the Civil War in Atlanta. The play is a true romance, a journey that travels no further than the Geller house to Piedmont Park and back. But in that distance, the girls discover not only the world, but a world of possibilities.
