HIGHES T R ATING BA SED ON PERSONAL E XPERIENCES OF PATIENTS
Recently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services implemented a new ratings system to help consumers quickly and easily compare hospitals. That system is based on the results of a patient-experience survey referred to as HCAHPS, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems. Fewer than 6% of hospitals in the country received five stars, the highest rating possible, including Cancer Treatment Centers of America® in metro Atlanta.* In the surveys, 96% of our patients said they would definitely recommend our hospital to others—and 94% rated their overall experience a nine or ten on a 10-point scale. With results like that, it’s easy to see why so many of our patients travel here for treatment. To learn more about five-star care at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in metro Atlanta, visit cancercenter.com/atlanta.
cancercenter.com/atlanta 888.845.2471 * HCAHPS results can be found at www.cms.gov and were based on the published summary ratings provided by CMS for a data collection period of 1/1/2014 to 12/31/2014.

ASO | welcome Dear Patrons,
I
joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors because I love this city and I love classical music. As such, a little over a year ago when asked to step in as the Orchestra’s interim president & CEO, there was only one answer with which I could respond: Yes. Those who know me well know that my plans are always prepared well in advance, detailed and process oriented, to prevent surprises. Sometimes, however, life doesn’t happen according to plan. As I conclude my tenure here, I am reflecting on the signature surprise of this remarkable journey. This surprise changed the trajectory of my life, expanding it to include genuine friendships and affection for the people of this incredible Orchestra and organization. I will leave my interim executive office with life-enhancing relationships I never imagined making. This alone will add more meaning to me than perhaps any business accomplishment of my career. I am getting a lot of credit for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s recovery. However, I cannot possibly celebrate all we’ve accomplished this past year without bringing to my side every musician onstage, every member on staff, my peers on the boards of the Orchestra and the Arts Center, and I would be remiss to not acknowledge my wife, Jeanne, for believing I could do this job and supporting me ever step of the way. Our new executive director, Jennifer Barlament, takes the reins in January. I could not be more thrilled with her experience, passion and vision. Her leadership will sustain our momentum and guide our Orchestra to even greater heights. Much work remains to be done, and she’ll need our help and our advocacy. Together, we will make sure that our city remains home to one of the world’s great orchestras. I will always be deeply grateful for the opportunity to have been entrusted with the stewardship of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The experience truly enhanced my life and I thank you for the support you’ve given me on this journey. On behalf of everyone at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, we send our warmest thoughts and best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful Holiday Season and a very Happy New Year! With warmest regards,
Terence L. Neal

I WOULDN’T BE HERE WITHOUT GRADY. I STARTED FEELING A LITTLE DIZZY. The day after I had my second baby, Valentina, I had a stroke. The doctors found a blood clot on the right side of my brain. I was transferred to Grady in a helicopter. Within hours after the surgery, I was back to life. It was just incredible. Miracles do happen and we have to thank Grady Hospital. Because of them we are still a family. I can take care of my babies.

When the musician, who has performed with the Colorado Symphony for seven years, went to pick up his instrument from baggage claim at the Denver airport, it was clear that at some point during the journey something terrible had happened. A section of the fiberglass case was ripped away, and when he opened it, he saw every musician’s nightmare: the neck of his double bass had been snapped in two. “The second I saw the damage, I almost cried,” he said. “I stopped and I thought, on the bright side, the body is mostly fine. It was the kind of thing that could be repaired. I knew of examples when new necks had been put on instruments, and they’ve come back sounding better.” Fenner will move to Atlanta in January to begin playing full time. Fenner says he’s sure of one thing; when he comes to Atlanta in January, he’ll be driving. “I have not flown with my bass since that incident and I’m going to stay away from it for a little while.” He says he’ll likely settle in Midtown to be within walking distance of the Woodruff Arts Center and Symphony Hall. Before his work with the Colorado Symphony, Fenner attended Cleveland Institute of Music for his undergraduate degree and Rice University for his master’s. He then had a brief stint with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach. He says joining the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra feels like a sort of homecoming since he already has longtime friends and colleagues in the Orchestra, including violist Jessica Oudin, with whom he went to junior high, high school and college. “I’m very excited to be joining the Orchestra,” he said. “It’s wonderful to see so many friendly faces.”

ALEXANDER STRELTSOV is a Russian aerial artist who started working with famed cirque choreographer Pavel Brun and producer Valentin Gneushev when he was 12, performing on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre. The same year he won the gold medal in the competition among international cirque artists at the prestigious Festival Mondial Du Cirque De L’Avenir in Paris. His combination of natural strength, artistic expression and grace sets his performance apart from other aerialists. Also known as “Sasha,” he has performed for three Russian presidents and the Bolshoi Ballet, as well as numerous symphonies in the United States and Europe, and elaborate theater and stage productions worldwide. He has made many TV appearances, such as the ABC special “Christopher Reeve — A Celebration of Hope” and the PBS nationwide broadcast of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s Fourth of July celebration. He continues to be a favorite at music halls, where he soars out over the audience in a spectacular display of aerial artistry or when he sets his riveting spinning cube act in motion.

A
T
s Director of Choruses for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra since 2000 and holder of its endowed Frannie and Bill Graves Chair, Norman Mackenzie was chosen to help carry forward the creative vision of legendary founding conductor Robert Shaw to a new generation of music lovers. At the Orchestra, he prepares the Choruses for all concerts and recordings, works closely with Robert Spano on the commissioning and realization of new choral-orchestral works and conducts holiday concerts annually. During his tenure, the chorus has made numerous tours, garnered several Grammy awards for best classical album and best choral performance and made an acclaimed debut with the Berlin Philharmonic. Mr. Mackenzie also serves as organist and director of music and fine arts at Atlanta’s Trinity Presbyterian Church and pursues an active recital and guest conducting schedule. The New York Times has called Mr. Mackenzie the “designated successor” to Robert Shaw. In his 14-year association with Mr. Shaw, he was keyboardist for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, principal accompanist for the ASO Choruses and, ultimately, assistant choral conductor. In addition, he was musical assistant and accompanist for the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers, the Robert Shaw Institute Summer Choral Festivals in France and the United States, and the famed Shaw/Carnegie Hall Choral Workshops. He was choral clinician for the first three workshops after Shaw’s passing and partnered with Robert Spano for the 20th anniversary workshop featuring the Berlioz Requiem.

he Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus was founded in 1970 by music director Robert Shaw. Comprising 200 auditioned voices, the Chorus is an all-volunteer organization that performs on a regular basis with the Orchestra and is featured on many of its recordings. Led by director of choruses Norman Mackenzie, the Chorus is known for its precision and expressive singing quality. Its recordings with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra have won multiple Grammy awards, including best choral performance, best classical recording and best opera recording. Those include Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony and the Berlioz Requiem. The Chorus performs large choral-symphonic works with the full Orchestra under the batons of music director Robert Spano and principal guest conductor Donald Runnicles. In addition, the Chorus has been involved in the creation and shaping of numerous worldpremiere commissioned choral works. The Chorus made its debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1976 in a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, with the ASO led by Robert Shaw. In addition, the Chorus performed in Washington, D.C., for President-elect Jimmy Carter’s inaugural concert in 1977. The Chorus has traveled to Germany three times as a special guest of the Berlin Philharmonic in December 2003 for performances of Britten’s War Requiem, in May 2008 for the Berlioz Requiem and in December 2009 for a week of Brahms Requiem performances — all with ASO Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles.

HOME ALONE
Ever since Home Alone appeared, it has held a unique place in the affections of a very broad public. Director Chris Columbus brought a uniquely fresh and innocent approach to this delightful story, and the film has deservedly become a perennial at holiday time. I took great pleasure in composing the score for the film, and I am especially delighted that the magnificent Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has agreed to perform the music in a live presentation of the movie. I know I speak for everyone connected with the making of the film in saying that we are greatly honored by this event ... and I hope that the audience will experience the renewal of joy that the film brings with it, each and every year. — John Williams
