The 79th season for the Grammy® Awardwinning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra promises to be full of thrills with dynamic debut performances and blockbuster return engagements, including world-renowned soprano Renée Fleming and violinist Joshua Bell. Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann and Vice President of Artistic Programming Gaetan Le Divelec, the architects behind the season, have created programming that plays to the Orchestra’s strengths, including several weekends of masterworks featuring the ASO Chorus, and introduces Atlanta audiences to composers and artists with a diverse story to tell through their music.
“This is one of our most diverse and exciting seasons to date, with artists of great range and gravitas side by side with fresh voices, and tremendous variety,” says Executive Director Jennifer Barlament.
The Delta Classical season opens in October with Maestro Stutzmann conducting an evening of Tchaikovsky, including his Symphony No. 4. Joining the opening weekend program is harpist Xavier de Maistre, considered one of the foremost harpists in the world, making his ASO debut. Gramophone called de Maistre “a virtuoso of the highest order, profoundly musical and capable of realizing a remarkable range of nuance.”

In January of 2024, the ASO celebrates the 200th birthday of Anton Bruckner with two performance weekends dedicated to the celebrated composer called “Architect of the Spirit: Bruckner at 200.” The first weekend, January 18 and 20, Stutzmann will conduct Bruckner’s brilliant but unfinished Symphony No. 9, with the often-used Te Deum to close the performance, featuring the ASO Chorus. The following weekend, Stutzmann conducts Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7.

In February, Grammy®-nominated composer Carlos Simon curates a program conducted by Jonathan Taylor Rush. The Orchestra, along with vocalists Kearstin Piper Brown, soprano and Brian K. Majors, baritone, will be joined by the outstanding Glee Clubs of HBCUs Morehouse College and Spelman College, as well as poet and spoken-word performer Marc Bamuthi Joseph. On the program, Simon’s brea(d)th and Motherboxx Connection, which explore contemporary life in Black America, as well as Morehouse College professor Uzee Brown’s We Shall Overcome.
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus features heavily in the next season, making appearances with Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann, herself a highly regarded contralto and a proponent of the great choral works.
In the 2023/24 season, Stutzmann conducts the ASO Chorus in an evening of Brahms rarities and Rachmaninov’s The Isle of the Dead in November, and Verdi’s Requiem in February of 2024.
The Chorus, under the baton of Krzysztof Urbański and prepared as always by Director of Choruses Norman Mackenzie, brings to life the spellbinding Carmina Burana for four performances in March of 2024. They’ll be joined by an all-star cast of soloists including Janai Brugger, soprano; Miles Mykkanen, tenor; and Anthony Clark Evans, baritone; and the Georgia Boy Choir, under the direction of David White.
In keeping with a long-running tradition of bringing new music into the world, the ASO will present three world premieres, including a new work from composer Chanda Dancy, an accomplished film and television composer who has been creating orchestral works since age 12. In May, the Orchestra will premiere a new work for orchestra and chorus called Sacrifice of Isaac, from composer Jonathan Leshnoff, as well as the world-premiere of a new concerto for orchestra from Adam Schoenberg.
Both the Leshnoff and Schoenberg pieces will be conducted by Music Director Laureate Robert Spano, who will also be joined by Garrick Ohlsson playing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3.
The Orchestra’s own musicians will take center stage in Symphony Hall multiple times next season. Concertmaster David Coucheron directs the orchestra and plays a special concert featuring Vivaldi’s

The Four Seasons in January of 2024. In April of that same year, Coucheron is joined by Principal Viola Zhenwei Shi to play Mozart’s brilliant Sinfonia concertante, and Principal Percussionist Joseph Petrasek plays Adam Schoenberg’s Losing Earth in February of 2024.
Six guest conductors are taking the podium in Symphony Hall, including the legendary Osmo Vänskä, who conducts a program that includes Sibelius’ Third Symphony in February of 2024, with pianist Alexander Melnikov playing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2. In spite of a long and storied career in conducting, Vänskä has never led the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and this concert weekend will be both his and Melnikov’s debut appearances in Atlanta.
Another classical music legend making their debut in Atlanta is pianist Maria João Pires. Widely considered to be one of the greatest pianists of our time, Pires is also a renowned interpreter of Beethoven and will present the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with Stutzmann in April of 2024.
That same month, Stutzmann conducts an evening of Strauss songs with Fleming, who has not performed in Symphony Hall since 1995, when she sang with the ASO under the baton of Robert Shaw. And in October, Bell returns for a special performance, not in the subscription series, that includes the Bruch Violin Concerto and excerpts from The Elements, a suite for violin commissioned by the artist, conducted by Peter Oundjian.

MASSAMBA DIOP, TALKING DRUM SOLOIST
Massamba Diop is one the most renowned masters of the tama, a talking drum from Senegal, West Africa, known for its abilities to replicate the sounds of human speech. Before the advent of telephones and radio, it was the tama that was called upon to announce important events and send messages from village to village. Recognizing the central role talking drums play in many African cultures, Ludwig Gorensson decided to put it, and Massamba, front-and-center of his Grammy- and Oscar-winning score for Marvel's Black Panther.
But by the time of Black Panther, Massamba was already a seasoned figure on the world music scene. He first came into the limelight as lead percussionist and founding member of Daande Lenol (The Voice of the People), the band of Senegalese super-star Baaba Maal. Over the past 40 years the group has toured the world, working with many notable musicians and releasing dozens of albums, including "Firin' in Fouta", which was nominated for a Grammy in 1996. Massamba has also performed and recorded with the likes of James Brown, Mumford & Sons, Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, Harry Belafonte, and Angelique Kidjo. He appeared on Peter Gabriel's landmark release "Passion", which won a Grammy in 1990, and has made several appearances with Playing for Change's "songs around the world". He has been part of many major international diplomatic events like the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in Oslo, the 2012 Olympics in London, and joined Stevie Wonder and a star-studded cast in 2009 to perform "Happy Birthday" for Nelson Mandela to close out Mandela Day at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Massamba is also a Remo Percussion, Inc. endorsed artist, and in 2016 helped them design and launch the "Tamani Talking Drum", the first mass-produced tama available to the public.
encoreatlanta.com | 21
In 1993, Massamba and American percussionist Tony Vacca co-founded the Senegal-America project, a grass-roots cultural exchange program which has sponsored various educational, health care, and artistic initiatives in Senegal, and has provided an important venue for African musicians in the States. Massamba and Tony tour the Northeast each year with a variety of performances, school programs, and workshops, from their Northampton, MA base. Massamba has several other regular collaborators including Surabhi Ensemble in Chicago, Walo Walo in Portland, Oregon, and Total Rhythm in San Francisco. He currently calls Columbus, Ohio home.

The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses National Geographic: Symphony for Our World Heroes: A Video Game Symphony
Jason Michael Paul Entertainment’s Founder, Jason Michael Paul — the producer and creator of the first stateside FINAL FANTASY concerts, The Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary concerts, The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses concerts, and Founder of JMP Entertainment — envisioned the “Heroes” experience to take audience members on a heroes journey, as set forth by Joseph Campbell’s monomyth — a narrative framework that can be seen in many of the games, film, and books throughout history. Each stage in the monomyth is a chapter in our story, and each game/musical selection was chosen primarily for its suitability in the chapter where it is featured. Everyone’s story is the story of a hero, told through the amazing worlds of other heroes, in an unforgettable experience that is not to be missed.
JMP Entertainment is celebrating its 20th anniversary since its inaugural video game music concert series with Dear Friends: Music from FINAL FANTASY; Paul has produced over 300 video game music concerts since the inaugural stateside performance in 2004. A seasoned concert producer who is known for staging concerts worldwide for notable artists such as Luciano Pavarotti and the Three Tenors, Paul realized that if philharmonic regulars set aside their preconceived notions about gaming culture, they could appreciate the rich musical virtuosity and magic of video game soundtracks. His vision was spot-on, and he has created a global phenomenon over the past two decades. “It’s beyond wonderful to celebrate our 20th anniversary with this unparalleled ‘Heroes’ concert series,” notes Paul. “The narrative of the Hero is so fundamental to our human experience, and these incredible video games symphonic pieces bring that rich tapestry to life.” For the “Heroes” concert series, a 70-piece orchestra will be joined by a choir to perform new arrangements of a variety of songs from multiple video game franchises. Represented titles will include FINAL FANTASY, Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Portal 2, BioShock, Guild Wars 2, Oblivion: The Elder Scrolls, Skyrim: The Elder Scrolls, Blades: The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Starfield, Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, Halo, Mass Effect, Dear Esther, Journey, God of War, Dragon Age, Shadow of the Colossus and more. The series promises to be an entirely new music concert format and the definitive concert experience for video game enthusiast and music afficionados alike.

Moreover, the concert story is narrated by BAFTA award winner, Nigel Carrington, from the popular video game “Dear Esther” and a host of other credits.
Jason Michael Paul has produced concerts all over the world for artists and companies such as Luciano Pavarotti, The Three Tenors, Elton John, Foo Fighters, Outkast, Michael McDonald, James Ingram, Patti Austin, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Tokyo Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Houston Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Utah Symphony, Ft.
