C
onductor, pianist, composer and pedagogue Robert Spano is known for his unique communicative abilities. Beginning his 14th season as Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, this imaginative conductor has quietly been responsible for nurturing the careers of numerous classically-trained composers and conductors. As Music Director of the Aspen Music Festival and School, he oversees the programming of more than 300 events and educational programs for 630 students, including Aspen’s American Academy of Conducting.
The Atlanta School of Composers reflects Spano’s commitment to American contemporary music. He has led ASO performances at Carnegie Hall (2014-2015 marks Spano’s ninth consecutive season as a guest of that prestigious venue), Lincoln Center, and the Ravinia, Ojai and Savannah Music Festivals. Guest engagements include the New York and Los Angeles philharmonics, San Francisco, Boston, Cleveland, Chicago and Philadelphia symphony orchestras, as well as Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, BBC Symphony and Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has conducted for Covent Garden, Welsh National Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera and the 2005 and 2009 Seattle Opera productions of Wagner’s Ring cycles. Following Britten’s War Requiem in Carnegie Hall and Verdi’s Aida in Atlanta, Spano conducted the world premiere of Steven Stucky’s The Classical Style in Ojai and will reprise the opera at Carnegie Hall in December. In addition to his hands-on leadership and eight Festival concerts at The Aspen Music Festival and School, Spano’s Hölderlin Songs premiere in August with soprano Susanna Phillips.
Recordings for Telarc, Deutsche Grammophon and ASO Media, have received six Grammy™ Awards with an allVaughan Williams disc released in September. Spano is on faculty at Oberlin Conservatory and has received honorary doctorates from Bowling Green State University, the Curtis Institute of Music, Emory University and Oberlin. Maestro Spano was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2012 and is proud to live in Atlanta.

WE WOULDN’T BE HERE WITHOUT GRADY. BOTH MY SONS WERE THREE MONTHS EARLY. I couldn’t believe that a baby born three months premature could live. The doctors and nurses at Grady would give the entire family wonderful attention. They explained, good or bad, what was going on. They gave not only medical support but also emotional support. I am very thankful for Grady because of my healthy babies. They are a miracle from God and I recommend Grady to everyone.

hen Benjamin Britten wrote A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra in 1946 to introduce children to the various sections of a symphony orchestra, a media label certainly wasn’t part of the picture. But over the years, recording has become a more and more important aspect of an orchestra’s public face, and with recent changes in the music industry, orchestras like the Atlanta Symphony have started to form their own recording labels

in order to get music into the hands of listeners. A house media label has in fact become a crucial functioning part of many contemporary symphony orchestras. “It’s really important for us to move quickly in response to what we’re hearing from our audiences,” says Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Interim President and CEO Terry Neal on the founding of ASO Media. “It has become an increasingly on-time, on-demand world. A media label is a way to make sure
when Telarc disbanded,” says ASO Vice President and General Manager Julianne M. Fish. “The ASO has such a rich recording history, to be able to continue this, a media label was deemed to be the best option.” Prior to the formation of ASO Media, creating a recording was ‘one-stop shopping,’ as Fish puts it: Telarc handled almost all aspects of production, recording and distribution. But now nearly all of this falls to the organization itself. Although it’s a challenge for the ASO to handle the new tasks, Fish points out that one of the primary advantages of the new label is that it does give a greater level of artistic control back to the orchestra. “We had a different relationship with Telarc, as did most of the traditional orchestras,” she explains. “Telarc had an interest in what was recorded because we make the artistry of the ASO they had an interest in what sold available to our audiences all and what their markets wanted. the time. in ensuring recordings on the new label kept up the tradition of excellence in capturing the signature ASO sound. “There’s quite a bit of alteration to the hall to make it into a studio, because we’re trying to put the listener into the theoretical best seat in the house,” says the ASO’s longtime recording engineer Michael Bishop. As in the days of recording under the baton of Robert Shaw, 300 sheets of plywood are brought into Symphony Hall to cover seats and concrete side walls in order to transform the hall into a recording studio. “We need the wood out there to make a different kind of ambience in the hall. The whole hall behaves quite differently than when there’s an audience in 18 Atlanta Symphony Orchestra | aso.org
there... The recording’s going to be around for a long time, so you want it to stand up to repeated listening. You want it to be everything the music director and musicians hope for.” For distribution, the ASO now partners with Nashville-based classical music record label Naxos. And as the name implies, ASO Media is not technically just a ‘record’ or ‘CD’ label: more and more, modern listeners no longer want or need to buy a physical product, but use digital downloads from iTunes and other sources to access music. The first release on the ASO Media label was a 2011 recording of Pulitzer Prize
winner Jennifer Higdon’s concerto On A Wire and Michael Gandolfi’s choral work, QED: Engaging Richard Feynman featuring the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus. During the 2011-12 season, ASO Media released two recordings: in June there was the Atlanta Symphony’s commission of Atlanta School of Composers member Christopher Theofanidis’ Symphony and Peter Lieberson’s Neruda Songs, and in October an all-Rachmaninov recording featuring Garrick Ohlsson playing Piano Concerto No. 3. Sibelius’ Symphonies Nos. 6 and 7 were featured on the fourth release in November 2013. The latest, a collection of Vaughan Williams’ works released on September 9, allows the orchestra to utilize some of its most popular elements: the recording features a popular concert program from the 2013-14 season, the ASO Chorus takes center stage on Williams’ famous Dona nobis pacem, and Concertmaster David Coucheron records as soloist with the ASO for the first time on The Lark Ascending. No matter the format and no matter the label, the emphasis remains on capturing the living artistry of the ASO. “Nothing can replace live performance because there’s always something electric about it,” says Coucheron about the process of recording. “The challenging part of playing The Lark Ascending is to capture the serenity, the quietness, the slowly accelerating motions. And to do that in fifteen minutes, creating an arc from all the many different sections of the piece, a beginning, middle and end: to get that right is tricky. I have to get myself in a specific mindset. When I play recordings I try to make it seem as live as possible, trying to imagine that there are thousands of people listening.”
The recording’s going to be around for a long time, so you want it to stand up to repeated listening. You want it to be everything the music director and musicians hope for.

ANTONIO VIVALDI was born in Venice, Italy, on March 4, 1678, and died in Vienna, Austria, on July 28, 1741. The Gloria is scored for soprano and alto soloists, mixed chorus, oboe, trumpet, continuo and strings.
A
ntonio Vivaldi was one of the most prolific and influential musicians of the Baroque era—not just as a composer, but also as a violin virtuoso and teacher. The son of a professional violinist, Vivaldi originally trained for the priesthood and was ordained in 1703. However, Vivaldi suffered from an ailment he described as strettezza di petto (“tightness of the chest”)—in all likelihood, asthma. As a result, Vivaldi later recalled: “I said mass for year or a little more. Then I discontinued it, having on three occasions had to leave the altar without completing it because of this ailment.” Vivaldi left the priesthood in 1703. That same year, he began his association with Venice’s Ospedale della Pièta, a home for orphaned girls renowned for its excellence in musical education. Despite extensive travels throughout Europe, Vivaldi remained affiliated with the Ospedale as a teacher, composer and music director for the better part of four decades.

The date and specific circumstances surrounding the composition of the Gloria, RV 589, are unknown. However, its omission of any male soloists (unlike RV 588) indicates that Vivaldi may well have composed this beautiful work for performance at Ospedale della Pièta. Gloria in excelsis (Chorus)

Although Vivaldi enjoyed great success during much of his life, the composer was poverty-stricken when he died in Vienna on July 28, 1741, at the age of 63. Like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonio Vivaldi was buried in a pauper’s grave.
Domine Deus (Soprano Solo)
It is in the realm of the concerto that Vivaldi exerted his most profound influence. Vivaldi composed approximately 550 concertos in which he explored a wide variety of instrumental combinations. But Antonio Vivaldi’s compositions also include numerous chamber

Christmas Portion and “Hallelujah!” Chorus from Messiah (1742) GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL was born in Halle, Germany, on February 23, 1685, and died in London, England, on April 14, 1759. The first performance of Messiah took place at the New Music Hall in Fishamble Street, Dublin, Ireland, on April 13, 1742. Messiah is scored for solo soprano, alto, tenor and bass, mixed chorus, two oboes, two bassoons, two trumpets, timpani, organ, continuo and strings.
T
he creation of George Frideric Handel’s most beloved work, Messiah, took place during a challenging period in the composer’s life. The steady decline in London of the popularity of Italian opera had caused Handel tremendous financial hardship. In addition, Handel’s rigorous work schedule had taken a profound toll on the composer’s health. By the summer of 1741, a period of lethargy had set in. It was at this point that Handel received a libretto for a new work, an oratorio based upon the birth, life, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The author of the libretto was Charles Jennens, who collaborated with Handel on several oratorios. In July of 1741, Charles Jennens wrote to a friend: Handel says he will do nothing next Winter, but I hope I shall persuade him to set another Scripture Collection I have made for him, & perform it for his own Benefit in Passion Week. I hope he will lay out his whole Genius & Skill upon it, that the Composition may excel
Handel began composition of Messiah on August 22, 1741. There seems to be no question that the libretto, based upon the Old and New Testaments, proved to be a source of majestic inspiration. Handel, working at a lightning pace, completed Messiah in just 24 days.
(T)he best Judges allowed (Messiah) to be the most finished piece of music. Words are wanting to express the exquisite Delight it afforded to the admiring crowded audience. The Sublime, the Grand, and the Tender, adapted to the most elevated, majestic and moving Words, conspired to transport and charm the ravished Heart and Ear. It is but justice to Mr. Handel, that the World should know, he generously gave the Money arising from this Grand Performance, to be equally shared by the Society for relieving Prisoners, the Charitable Infirmary, the Mercer’s Hospital, for which they will ever gratefully remember his Name…
Once Handel completed Messiah, he focused his attention upon Samson, another oratorio inspired by the Bible. It was during this period that Handel accepted an invitation to travel to Dublin for a series of concerts in aid of charity. In November, Handel set sail for Dublin, bringing with him several works for performance at the charity concerts. Among those works was The London premiere of Messiah, which Messiah. took place at Covent Garden on March 23, The premiere of Messiah took place at 1743, was more problematic. yearly tradition at the Foundling Hospital. On April 6, 1759, Handel made his final public appearance, conducting a London performance of Messiah. Eight days later, Handel was dead at the age of 74. The funeral, held in Westminster Abbey, attracted an estimated 3,000 mourners. Three years later, the great church unveiled a monument to Handel, created by the French sculptor, Louis François Roubiliac. The monument depicts Handel, holding the score of Messiah. Overhead, an angel plays a lyre. The score is opened to the soprano solo that serves to begin the oratorio’s Third Part: “I know that my redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth.” This concert features Part I, the Christmas Portion, of Messiah, as well as the “Hallelujah!” Chorus from Part II. Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel! They lookèd up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel! Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heav’nly Lord, That hath made heav’n and earth of naught, And with His blood mankind hath bought. Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel! “Hodie Christus natus est” from Benjamin Britten; traditional Latin text Today Christ is born. Today the Savior appears. ASO | 12.11/13 | guests
he Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus (ASOC) was founded in 1970 by former ASO Music Director Robert Shaw. Comprising 200 auditioned voices, the Chorus is an all-volunteer organization that performs on a regular basis with the ASO and is featured on many of the Orchestra’s recordings. Led by ASO Director of Choruses Norman Mackenzie, the Chorus is known for its precision and expressive singing quality. Their recordings with the ASO have won multiple GRAMMY® Awards, including Best Choral Performance, Best Classical Recording and Best Opera Recording. Those include Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony and the Berlioz Requiem. The ASOC performs large choral-symphonic works with the full Orchestra under the batons of Music Director Robert Spano and Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles. In addition, the Chorus has been involved in the creation and shaping of numerous worldpremiere commissioned choral works. The Chorus made its debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1976 with a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. In addition, the Chorus performed in Washington, D.C., for President-elect Jimmy Carter’s Inaugural Concert in 1977. The chorus has traveled to Germany three times to be a special guest of the Berlin Philharmonic in December 2003 for performances of Britten’s War Requiem, in May 2008 for the Berlioz Requiem and in December 2009 for a week of Brahms Requiem performances — all with ASO Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles. Within the Chorus, there is an auditioned group of 60 musicians called the ASO Chamber Chorus. The Chamber Chorus, which formed before the larger Chorus in 1967, performs music of the Baroque and Classical eras, as well as works by modern masters.

what school should be. Our students know how to grow turnips, groom ponies, lead class discussions, write knock-out research papers, and explain how math was used in the development of ancient civilizations. They ask great questions, climb trees, and know what it means to be academic risk-takers. High Meadows has mastered the art of education, inspiring children to become life-long learners.

Music Director Robert Spano led ASO Concertmaster David Coucheron as soloist in Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5, rounding out the night with the ASO and world-renowned ASO Chorus performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in an “Ode to Joy” performance to be remembered for many years to come.
