Première rhapsodie for Clarinet and Orchestra (1909-1910) CLAUDE DEBUSSY was born in St. Germaine-en-Laye, France, on August 22, 1862, and died in Paris, France, on March 25, 1918. In addition to the solo clarinet, the First rhapsody is scored for three flutes, two oboes, English horn, three bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, triangle, cymbals, suspended cymbal, two harps and strings. Approximate performance time is nine minutes. First ASO Classical Subscription Performances: January 8, 9 and 11, 1970, Alan Balter, Clarinet, Lee Everett, Conductor. I
n 1910, Claude Debussy completed two works for clarinet and piano. Debussy originally wrote the Première rhapsodie to serve as a test piece for students participating in wind competitions at the Paris Conservatoire. The far briefer Petite pièce was intended to be a sight-reading test. Later, Debussy created orchestral versions of the piano parts for both the Rhapsodie and Petite pièce. The Rhapsodie had its first performance in Paris on January 16, 1911, part of a concert by the Société Musicale Indépendente. The Rhapsodie’s dedicatee, P. Mimart, was the clarinetist. Debussy seemed to hold this charming, lyrical work in high esteem, commenting that the Rhapsodie was “one of the most pleasing pieces I have ever written.” Symphony No. 3 (2011, rev. 2014) RICHARD PRIOR was born in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, United Kingdom, on July 26, 1966. The first performance 14 Atlanta Symphony Orchestra | aso.org
of the Symphony No. 3 took place at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts, Atlanta, Georgia, on March 3, 2011, with the composer conducting the Emory University Symphony Orchestra. The Symphony No. 3 is scored for piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, English horn, two clarinets, bass clarinet, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets, two trombones, bass trombone, tuba, timpani, percussion (4-5 players), piano, two harps and strings. These are the first ASO Subscription Performances.

international venues ranging from Chicago to Norway and Portugal; he was Composerin-Residence for the 2003 Association for Music in International Schools (AMIS) at The Hague in the Netherlands. Recent performances of Dr. Prior’s music in Atlanta include …of shadow and light… (incantations for orchestra), a work commissioned and premiered by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and its Music Director, Robert Spano. ichard Prior’s Symphony No. 3 premiered at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts on March 3, 2011, with the composer conducting the Emory University Symphony Orchestra. Subsequent performances of the work in 2014 included the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra, Victor Yampolsky, conducting, and the Cairo National Symphony Orchestra, led by the composer. Richard Prior prepared the revised, 2014 edition of his Symphony No. 3 as part of the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Robert Spano, Music Director. The Symphony No. 3 offers many of the admirable and compelling qualities associated with Richard Prior’s music. Rich and evocative lyricism and energizing rhythms, almost suggestive of organic jazz improvisation, are also heard in such recent works as the Stabat Mater, the two String Quartets, and the Cello Concerto. The Symphony No. 3 displays a remarkable 16 Atlanta Symphony Orchestra | aso.org
musical and dramatic unity, the product of the ingenious manipulation of central thematic material. The Symphony No. 3 is in three movements. The first, soundscape, opens with an expansive, mysterious slow-tempo introduction (lento e molto intenso). Out of the mists arises the principal ascending and descending motif, first played by the English horn, and echoed by the violins. The introduction inexorably gathers intensity that finally subsides, leading to the opening movement’s quick-tempo section (marziale), based upon the principal motif. An abbreviated reprise of the slow-tempo introduction heralds the recapitulation of the marziale section. The music propels to a fff climax, subsiding to the hushed final measures. In the slow-tempo second movement, threnody (molto espressivo, intimo), the central motif serves as the basis for introspective, lyrical expression. There are also moments of anguish, most notably in an episode toward the movement’s close that is punctuated by pounding kettledrums. Plaintive solos for the winds resolve to the threnody’s hushed conclusion. The finale, conclusion (molto appassionato, dramatico), opens with the restatement, in various forms, of the central motif. A gruff, pesante figure in the timpani, horns, and lower brass and strings launches a brilliant virtuoso orchestral fantasia on the central motif. In the closing measures, a triumphant, glowing transformation of the motif is capped by the thrilling final bars. Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Opus 67 (1808) LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN was baptized in Bonn, Germany, on December 17, 1770, and died in Vienna, Austria, on March 26, 1827. The first performance of the Fifth Symphony took place in Vienna at the

B
eethoven’s immortal Fifth Symphony is music that continues to astonish listeners with its elemental power, taut drama, and, above all else, a sense of absolute inevitability. And yet, there was nothing inevitable about the process of the work’s creation. The composition of the Fifth Symphony took place over a span of approximately four years (1804-1808). During that time, Beethoven wrote and rewrote passages, filling sketchbook upon sketchbook with ideas for the Symphony. Beethoven finally completed his Fifth Symphony in the spring of 1808. The Fifth received its premiere at a December 22, 1808 concert, sponsored by the composer, and held at the Vienna Theater an der Wien. Beethoven served as both conductor and pianist in a marathon program, featuring almost four hours of his music. Perhaps a music lover who had access to a time machine might choose this concert as his first destination. Imagine the opportunity to witness Beethoven performing several of his greatest masterworks! By all accounts, however, the event was far from a triumph. A lack of sufficient rehearsal time, coupled with Beethoven’s failings as a conductor, led to performances that were haphazard at best,
and disasters at worst. Further, the audience endured this marathon concert—held in the dead of winter—in an unheated theater. Today, of course, the Beethoven Fifth maintains its status as one of the greatest and most popular symphonies. However, the extraordinary power and revolutionary nature of the Beethoven Fifth at first inspired confusion, awe, and even fear on the part of some music lovers. In his Memoirs, Hector Berlioz recalled an 1828 performance of the Beethoven Fifth in Paris, attended by one of the young French composer’s teachers at the Conservatoire, Jean-François Lesueur. After the concert, Berlioz rushed to Lesueur, anxious to learn his professor’s opinion: I went striding up and down the passage with flushed cheeks. “Well, dear master?”...“Hush! I want air; I must go outside. It is incredible, wonderful! It stirred and affected and disturbed me to such a degree that when I came out of the box and tried to put on my hat I could not find my own head! Do not speak to me until tomorrow.”... The next day I rushed off to his house, and we at once fell to talking about the masterpiece which had stirred us so deeply...It was easy to see that I was talking to a quite different being from the man of the day before, and that the subject was painful to him. But I persisted until Lesueur, after again admitting how deeply the symphony had affected him, shook his head with a curious smile, and said, “All the same, such music ought not to be written.” To which I replied, “Don’t be afraid, dear master, there will never be too much of it.”

ASO | 11.20/22/23 | guests
ASO | 11.20/22/23 | guests The Fifth Symphony’s furious opening movement (Allegro con brio) begins with a proclamation of the famous “short-shortshort-long” motif—the seed from which the entire work will grow (Anton Schindler quoted the composer as describing this passage in the following manner: “Thus fate knocks at the door!” The authenticity of this quote has long been a subject of dispute). The second movement (Andante con moto) is in the form of variations on two themes, the latter incorporating the central fournote motif. The third-movement Scherzo (Allegro) proceeds to a breathtaking transitional passage, in which the timpani softly repeats the four-note motif. The first violins intone echoes of the Scherzo, as the orchestra moves inexorably to the glorious finale (Allegro), which follows without pause. Now, the central motif is transformed into a triumphant celebration, reinforced by the introduction of piccolo, contrabassoon and trombones—all making their first appearance in a Beethoven Symphony. A quiet reprise of the Scherzo resolves to the work’s glorious presto conclusion, where all is bathed in the brightest sunlight.

soprano with a sparkling voice to match her personality, Connecticut native Kristen Plumley brings her joy of being on stage to every role she performs. Lauded as “sensationally note-perfect” (St. Petersburg Times), “a roguish comedienne” (TheMiddletown, CT Press) and “Met-worthy” (The Dallas Morning News), Ms. Plumley has portrayed Adina (L’Elisir d’Amore) and Gilda (Rigoletto) with Greensboro Opera Company, Musetta (La bohème) with Amarillo Opera, Norina (Don Pasquale) and Zerlina (Don Giovanni) with Virginia Opera, Barbarina (Le Nozze di Figaro) with New York City Opera and countless other stunning performances. Other roles to her credit include Juliette (Roméo et Juliette), Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi), and Kathy (Student Prince), and musical theater favorites Maria (West Side Story), Carrie (Carousel), Fiona (Brigadoon) and Laurey (Oklahoma!). On the concert stage, Kristen Plumley has performed a broad spectrum of works, including Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Requiem, Haydn’s Mass in Time of War and Handel’s Sing Unto God with the New England Symphonic Ensemble at Carnegie Hall. Additionally, she has sung Mozart’s Mass in C minor, Elgar’s For the Fallen, Bach’s Coffee Cantata, Respighi’s Laud to the Nativity and Bach’s Cantata No.1 across the US, as well as Jack Everly’s Sci-Fi Spectacular (music from science fiction movies and television shows) with the Cleveland, Indianapolis, Seattle and Baltimore Symphonies and “An Evening of Gilbert and Sullivan” with the symphony orchestras of St. Louis, Richmond, Memphis and Minnesota. Enthusiastic about contemporary works, she has been active in many new operas at the prestigious Banff Centre for the Arts (Alberta, Canada) and in companies throughout New York City.
GEORGE TAKEI, narrator
“Flashback” in 1996.
G
George and his husband, Brad Takei, are residents of Los Angeles. They met while running with the Los Angeles Frontrunners in the early 1980s. Life partners for more than 27 years, they were married on September 14, 2008, in the Democracy Forum of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. Brad’s last name, Altman, was changed to Takei by decree of the Los Angeles Superior Court in 2011.
George is always in demand as a vocal artist. His voice is featured in two episodes of George Lucas’ cartoon version of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. George’s voice is featured in Walt Disney Pictures’ full-length animated features, “Mulan” and “Mulan II”, “Star Trek” audio novel recordings, Fox Television’s “The Simpsons”, “Futurama”, “Adventure Time” and in numerous voice-overs and narrations. George has been a guest narrator with numerous symphony orchestras. In February 2013, George narrated “A Survivor from Warsaw” with the Nashville Symphony and in February 2012 narrated “A Survivor from Warsaw” with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. He narrated “Sci-Fi Spectacular” with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in January 2014 and North Carolina Symphony in June 2013, amongst many others. All “SciFi” concerts were conducted by Jack Everly. George narrated “Look to the Future” with the San Francisco Symphony in July 2009. Television appearances include “The Neighbors,” “Watch What Happens Live,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “The New Normal,” “Celebrity Apprentice,” “Ellen: The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Conan” and countless others. George is grateful for his association with “Star Trek,” TV’s quintessential sci-fi show, and the character he portrayed, Hikaru Sulu. Originally helmsman of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise, Mr. Sulu was promoted to captain of the U.S.S. Excelsior in “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country”, released in 1991. George reprised his Captain Sulu role in a “Star Trek: Voyager” episode titled

WE WOULDN’T BE HERE WITHOUT GRADY. WE HIT A DUMP TRUCK HEAD ON. When we came to, the engine was on top of us. We both suffered multiple compound fractures, broken ribs, and other life-threatening injuries. The work Grady did was amazing. It was a lot surgeries and a lot of time. When you go to a hospital, you don’t expect staff to care too much about the family members. The staff treated our family like they were a part of the Grady family. We can’t thank Grady enough.

the art of inspiration
what school should be. Our students know how to grow turnips, groom ponies, lead class discussions, write knock-out research papers, and explain how math was used in the development of ancient civilizations. They ask great questions, climb trees, and know what it means to be academic risk-takers. High Meadows has mastered the art of education, inspiring children to become life-long learners.
