4 | a letter Have never been quite so glad for the advent of a new year as this one. We welcomed 2021 with high hopes and will continue to hope throughout the year. I’m deeply mindful that the description of our upcoming programming that follows needs to be coupled with the same asterisks that have accompanied all of our future tense statements for the last ten months: *provided we can do so safely;
*provided our artists’ unions approve our work proposals;
*provided no additional “Well, THAT’S never happened to us before” occurrences crop up.
All caveating aside, here’s what we’re thrilled to be offering you this spring. With a profoundly grateful hat tip to the Atlanta Opera, we’re producing a series called Under the Tent for six weeks, beginning in April. Featuring a concert production of the musical Working — with music from Stephen Schwartz, Lin-Manuel Miranda, James Taylor, and more — we’ll be celebrating the songs and stories of America’s workers. Remembering that all of Atlanta deserves great theatre, we’ll be offering day time performances of two of our favorite pieces for young audiences and families — Songs to Grow On, a family-friendly concert event featuring American folk music legend Woody Guthrie’s classic children’s songs, and Beautiful Blackbird LIVE, Atlanta’s favorite feathered funk band. We're also delighted to be offering a few evening options and will be releasing more information through our website soon, so keep an eye out! Pitched right on Calloway Plaza, adjacent to the Woodruff Arts Center, our tent offers socially distant seating, CDC recommended safety protocols, and — most importantly — a step back toward sharing theatre together as artists and audience. Can’t wait to see you there!

UNDER THE TENT AND AFTER THE TENT A look at our upcoming offerings and everything we’re hoping to bring after it. STORY BY

By the time this issue of the Alliance Theatre Magazine hits homes, we’ll be quickly approaching the oneyear anniversary of the shutdown last March – March 13, to be exact. That’s a long time to be without theatre. Though we’ve seen theatre continue to carry on online and, rarely, in person (including our own drive-in production of A Christmas Carol: The Live Radio Play), not being able to bring live theatre to our patrons has left a massive hole in our hearts. This is why we’re ridiculously excited to present you with our updated plan for the rest of the year! UNDER THE TENT Warmer weather is right around the corner and, with it, outdoor concerts! Due to the massive success of A Christmas Carol: The Live Radio Play, we’ll be closing out our current season with a bang! This spring we’re popping up a tent in Callaway Plaza for a series of shows Under the Tent. We can’t wait to have you back on the Woodruff Arts Center campus taking in live theater. What is your work? Put a night out at the theater back on your calendar with our concert staging of the Broadway hit Working: A Musical. With original music by Stephen Schwartz, James Taylor, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and more, this

show explores what makes our work meaningful across all walks of life. During the day, we’re reenvisioning two of our most loved shows for young audiences as fun family concerts! Atlanta’s favorite feathered funk band is back in Beautiful Blackbird LIVE! April 8-18. Featuring original music by Eugene H. Russell IV and inspired by Ashley Bryan’s children’s book, this concert will have you shaking your tailfeathers and celebrating your uniqueness. April 29 – May 9, we’ll stage Songs to Grow On, a Woody Guthrie concert for children. Drawn primarily from American folk music legend Woody Guthrie’s iconic album Songs to Grow On for Mother and Child, this whimsical song cycle captures the joy and wonder of childhood. We have redesigned the theatergoing experience with your safety in mind. All performances will be outdoors under the tent on Callaway Plaza in open air, and patrons will be required to wear masks at all times. You will sit with members of your party in pods of 2-4, socially distanced from those around you. To reduce contact, ticket scanning will be contactless when you arrive, and staff will be masked and equipped with gloves.
8 | encore AFTER THE TENT Drama camps are back in-person this summer! In addition to camps at the Woodruff Arts Center, we will be expanding to a new Decatur location at the Museum School. All in-person camps will follow enhanced safety protocols including masking, social distancing, and smaller camp sizes. Virtual camps will also be available. We can’t wait to connect and create again this summer! Starting in January, we opened our very first animated film, Sit-In, based on an original play by our own Distinguished Artist in Residence, Pearl Cleage. The film centers around three friends as they learn about the sit-ins of the Civil Rights era, and powerfully apply those lessons to issues they – and

we all –face today. The short film will be available on Alliance Theatre Anywhere, our new streaming platform, through the end of June. Our original production of Data will also be available on Alliance Theatre Anywhere starting in May. This play, written by Matthew Libby, was our 2020/21 Kendeda Winner and will be presented to audiences in a unique, interactive way. Hands Up has been shifted to a full production that will be presented on our Hertz Stage in the Fall. In addition, our production of Toni Stone has been moved to next season and Accidental Heroes has been cancelled. We’re so excited to welcome you back home to the Alliance Theatre!

ATLANTA IS IN THE HOUSE: ADAPTING WORKING FOR A 2021 AUDIENCE We chatted with Tamilla Woodard, the Director of our upcoming concertstyle reimagining of Working: A Musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, James Taylor, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and more. Take a look! STORY BY
Kathleen Covington What drew you to want to direct a concert staging of Working: A Musical? I wanted to tell the stories of the everyday people who keep a city going and to celebrate those folks who are often unseen, overlooked, or undervalued. We’ve been witnessing it for a year now — the folks who don’t have the luxury to work from home but make it possible for those of us who do. I wanted to use the theater as a way to acknowledge and say thank you to those whose collective labor is the very fabric of a city — of any community. Why is this work important for audiences right now in this moment? We need to gather right now. We need to gather around stories that remind us of our humanity, of the vitalness of our communities,
alliancetheatre.org | @alliancetheatre
of how we need each other even in the expressed conflict of our differences. The theater is one of the few places besides sporting events where people from all walks of life may find themselves in the same room, sitting next to perfect strangers leaning in and towards the same thing. In the theater, we can experience the full radius of our emotions in 90 minutes or two

hours or even 60 minutes or so and then go home and savor that communion for hours or many days more.
visions are reshaping Atlanta as we speak. This new song is going to be HOT! I can’t wait for you all to hear it.
How will the Alliance's production of Working: A Musical be different from past versions of the work? (How might it be personalized for Atlanta?)
What has it been like collaborating with Stephen Schwartz to respond to the world we're in today?
Oh man, all sorts of ways! First of all, ATLANTA IS IN THE HOUSE!! We have been working hard to collect the voices of Atlanta through contributed interviews of the good people who call Atlanta home. We’re talking to everyone from high school students to health care workers about what their work means to them and what the futures looks like to them. We asking Atlanta’s citizens to tell the extraordinary dreams they have for the communities they live and work in. Then we’re taking those very words and putting them into the show on stage every night. And not only that, we’re also asking Atlanta to sing along with us by contributing their recorded vocals to the opening and closing song. It’s a virtual community choir. AND — yes there is more!! — I am so excited for this — we are commissioning an original song created by a super special Atlanta artist and inspired by interviews from remarkable community organizers whose
Stephen is — I mean — I don’t even know where to start. It’s freakin’ humbling to sit in the (virtual) room with one of the greatest lyrists and composers in ALL OF THE AMERICAN THEATER! Each meeting with him was an absolute master class in this form. And at the same time, he remains so deeply inquisitive of the process and collaborative and trusting as we made our way through the concept and how that would be reshaping the show. From changing lyrics to removing scenes and songs to replace with new interviews from Atlantans, he was always on board, asking questions that would inevitably strength the proposition, clarify, and inspire us forward. His guidance has been tremendous and confidence inspiring. Working is truly evergreen and this sort of modular reshaping and adaptation seems to be part of its DNA. Starting with Stephen himself who, along with Nina Faso, adapted it to the stage from Studs Terkel’s bestselling book of interview with American workers. Stephen adapted
12 | encore it again in 1982 from its original Broadway premiere (1978) and since then Working has continued to evolve, including the addition of new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda in 2012 and a 2018 Encore series in NYC using unique interviews of the workers at the City Center. Working is truly a piece of art that is enduring and speaks across the ages.
alliancetheatre.org | @alliancetheatre
Is there anything you can tell us about the new song? This new song will honor the intrepid spirit of Atlanta, a city that is in a dynamic evolution. The new song will call to the shared future and also, we hope, make you wanna come up out of your seats and sing along.

hen I arrived in Atlanta in August of 1969, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was only 4 years old and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 had only been around a year longer. Atlanta was changing with the times and in 1970 when a young lawyer named Maynard Jackson was elected the city’s presiding officer of the Board of Aldermen, everybody I met told me he was certainly going to be chosen as Atlanta’s first African American mayor in the next municipal election. When I got a job on the archival staff of the newly created Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, I found myself right in the center of the city’s close-knit community of Civil Rights activists. My co-workers were not much older than I was but while I was finishing high school in Detroit, they were already staffing SNCC and SCLC officers in Greenwood, Mississippi, and Selma, Alabama. They had already been arrested and held without bail in the notorious Parchman Prison, beaten on Freedom Rides, lost friends to Ku Klux Klan violence. They had known Dr. King and marched beside him. I was in awe of their courage and spent hours listening to their stories about how it felt to be on the front lines of the movement that had transformed America. Those people became some of my closest friends and in the last few years, it has been hard to lose them to old age and the various ailments that sometimes come with it. As I began to work on Sit-In, another one of their number, my amazing friend, Donald P. Stone, joined the ancestors. Stone was a key part of the Atlanta Student Movement, which is why I gave some of his history to the character of Mr. Payne, so he could share it with his granddaughter as she discovered her inner activist.

Our play was inspired by the beautiful children’s book, Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down by Andrea Davis Pinkney and Brian Pinkney. But somewhere along the way, their text became more of a jumping off point to develop our own story, deeply rooted (L-R) Eden Luse, Bella Fraker, Lena Castro in Atlanta’s movement history and present-day activism. The main character, Janet Payne, an 11 year old student at the fictional Grace Hamilton Academy, discovers her grandfather’s activist history when she herself stands up (by sitting in!) to protest climate change. “You’re part of a family tradition,” her grandfather tells her when she runs into some resistance. “I’m proud of you.” His faith in her gives her the inspiration to keep going. In these times of great social change and political upheaval, I believe we all need that kind of inspiration every once in a while! We’re proud that our Sit-In team has been able to translate the play into an amazing animated journey with some brand new freedom songs that none of us could have imagined. But here we are — trying something new to tell a story that is as old as the human struggle to be free. I think my friend Donald P. Stone would have loved it. Presenting Sponsor

A DIGITAL SEASON IS BORN: A Walk Through AllIance Theatre Anywhere’s Streaming Options STORY BY
Jessenia Ingram, Alexis Woodard, Skylar Burks, and Raiyon Hunter Nothing about this season has been normal. The pandemic has forced us to expand our minds, stretch our imaginations, and shatter the boundaries of what it means to create theatre. As theatre artists, we have been put in a position to create in ways we have never done before. For us, the beginning of this new endeavor has taken the form of an entirely digital season of programming to live in tandem with our in-person season. Our live season begins with the theme joy, so what better way to spread some love and light than through laughter! With a combination of creativity and comedy, Laugh Track was born. We envisioned a sketch comedy show with a company of kooky, yet lovable characters, and who better to partner with than some of the funniest people in town, Dad’s Garage. Jon Carr and the team at Dad’s took the idea and ran with it, creating absurdly funny episodes that are released monthly. Even though our audiences aren’t able to gather within the four walls of the Coca-Cola Stage for now, our sincerest hope is that Laugh Track will remind people of the joys of theatre. Next to take the digital stage is Spotlight Studio, a platform dedicated to Atlanta Artists where we will grant seven artists $5,000 to produce digital work for our platform. We can't wait to share more about this later! Following is Backstage Atlanta – an original documentary series about our city and the people and places that make it what it is, a true embrace of our motto, “Your Story. Your Stage.” Closing our digital season is Classic Remix, where we will work in tandem with our Teen Ensemble to create an entirely new digital production, devising a modern story from a classic text. We are so thrilled about what we have in store for you and can’t wait for you to come on this new adventure with us.

IN TRANSITION: ALLIANCE THEATRE BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTS JOCELYN HUNTER AS CHAIRPERSON In her capacity as board chair, Hunter will help lead the Alliance through two seasons of recovery and growth post-COVID, which will see an ever-bolder effort by the staff of the theater to carry out their mission of expanding hearts and minds onstage and off. STORY BY
Kathleen Covington
In December of 2020, Jocelyn Hunter was chosen as the new Chair of the Alliance Theatre’s Board of Directors. She previously served as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors, is a member of the Governance and Executive Committees, and has served on the Alliance Theatre Board of Directors since 2006. As Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Home Depot, Hunter brings a wealth of leadership and legal experience to her role as Alliance Board Chair. She is also the first person of color elected to Chair any board of directors at the Woodruff Arts Center.
of fiercely smart and deeply passionate board leaders, and I’m delighted to see that trend continuing,” said Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director of Alliance Theatre.

In addition to her deep support and involvement with the
22 | encore Alliance, Hunter’s long history of volunteerism and leadership has benefited numerous organizations and causes in the Atlanta community. Additional volunteer positions include serving on the Advisory Board for the Duke Law Center for Judicial Studies, as a fellow of The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, and as a member of the Board of Visitors of Duke Law School, where she is cochair of the Future of the Profession task force. Hunter also serves as the Board Chair for the Atlanta History Center. In 2013, Hunter had the prestigious honor of receiving the Georgia Multicultural Leadership Award. Hunter succeeds Lila Hertz as the previous Chair. Under Hertz’s leadership, the Alliance successfully completed its first season on the brand-new Coca-Cola Stage, welcoming tens of thousands of new and returning patrons to this beautiful, state-of-the-art venue. The Alliance also expanded its education and in-school partnerships focused on literacy, learning, and imagination to more than 90,000 annual participants, as well as codified and launched antibias and allyship training programs for corporate and non-profit clients through its Alliance@work corporate training department. With Hertz’s long-standing, deep, and

thoughtful leadership, the Alliance also finished a successful strategic planning phase in December 2020 which saw the theater reach for growth and expanded mission from 2021-2025. “Lila Hertz has been and continues to be,” Booth continued, “a consummate example of a tireless and inspiring leader who is ready, willing, and able to spend her phenomenal social capital on behalf of the Alliance. That we get to follow that with Jocelyn Hunter’s leadership is truly a gift that builds strength on strength. Jocelyn has a brilliant strategic mind and has long been a driving voice both within and on behalf of the Alliance. I so look forward to these next years of her thought partnership and guidance as the theatre moves ever upward and onward.” Jocelyn Hunter's term as Board Chair will start June 1, 2021.

Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fund-saving and fundraising projects to benefit the theatre. The three committees are the Theatre Advocates, the Theatre Educators, and the Theatre Ushers. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact ATushers@alliancetheatre.org.
