hen Bridie Carroll steps onto the Fox stage to perform in the musical Grease, it will be a special homecoming. Though she lived in many places growing up (including Hong Kong), and has appeared in many musicals (including Hairspray), Carroll spent much of her youth right here in Atlanta.

“My mom mentioned the other day that it was seeing Debbie Boone in a show at the Fox when I was only five or six years old that really put the fire in me to have a career in theater,” Carroll says. “She reminded me that when we left the theater, I made [them] wait by the stage door to get Debbie Boone’s

gets into the show with their cheering. It makes it even more fun to do what we do on stage — the enthusiasm is infectious.” When asked about her plans while in Atlanta, she says, “I haven’t been there in quite some time, since just before the Olympics, so it will be very interesting to see how different it is compared to how I remember it. “I’d really love to go back to Roswell and see places I remember there — like the theaters where I performed — and see what old memories are rekindled.” Grease will play The Fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta from August 7-16. This tour, which is based on the 2007 Broadway revival not only blends the two versions of show, it features “American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks. “People are really into this show, especially when Taylor performs,” Carroll says. “Women show up in Poodle skirts like those worn in the ’50s [with] the words ‘Soul Patrol’ stitched on. (It was a nickname Taylor picked up during his ‘American Idol’ days because of his soulful voice.) They wave homemade signs and just go crazy when he steps on stage. It’s almost surreal, like one of those reality television moments.” Carroll plays the role of “Jan,” one of the Pink Ladies’ female gang members. “It’s great being a Pink Lady,” she says. “Growing up, I was never one of those girls who belonged to a group or a clique, so it’s fun to get to wear the big [pink] jacket and be one of the girls everyone wants to be.” Her favorite musical numbers include her duet “Mooning” with her onstage boyfriend, “Rump” (the character known as “Putzie” in the film version), and the show’s opening number, “Grease is the Word.” “I’ve always loved that song, and it’s always great to see how it gets the audience going from the start of the show,” she says. Speaking of audiences, Carroll says they have been wonderful throughout the tour, inspiring the cast with their enthusiastic responses across the country. “We love it when the audience really

Dora, The Explorer LIVE! The Search for the City of Lost Toys comes to The Fabulous Fox Theatre this month. The bilingual, animated little girl springs to life, with Susan Oliveras in the lead role. Encore Atlanta was keen to know more about the pint-sized explorer who has helped so many children learn. So, Oliveras shared these fun facts with us.

riginally, there was no Dora. When creators Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh Valdes, and Eric Weiner decided to create a show that would encourage active problem solving with all sorts of games, their main characters were animals: first a squirrel, then a marten and finally, the most promising of all, a bunny. But the bunny eventually became a 7-year-old Latina girl ... named Dora!

He achieved worldwide fame in 2006 when he was named the winner of the fifth season of “American Idol” garnering more than 63.4 million votes in total. Born in Birmingham, Ala., his passion for music began at an early age. He toured the southeastern United States during his teenage years and released two independent albums. During that same time, he had shared the stage with Willie Nelson, Earth, Wind & Fire and The Allman Brothers, to name a few. Known for his energetic performances with influences derived from classic soul, country blues and R&B music, he quickly grew a large fan base among the millions of viewers and voters who tuned in to “Idol” each week. JIM JACOBS (Book, Music and Lyrics, On-Air Judge) is the co-creator of the hit Broadway musical Grease and was one of three judges on NBC’s talent-competition series “Grease: You’re the One That I Want.” Jacobs, who created Grease (in 1970) with Warren Casey, was born and raised on the mean tough streets of Chicago’s far northside. During the golden era of rock ’n’ roll (1956–1960) he was a guitar-playing “greaser” student at Taft High School. In 1963, Jacobs met Warren Casey when they were both cast in a community theatre production of A Shot in the Dark. Seven years later, the pair sat down and wrote what was to become one of the greatest musicals of all time. An instant success, Grease opened in 1971 in an old former trolley barn called the Kingston Mines Theatre on Chicago’s North Side. A year later, Grease made it to Broadway and “Greasemania” took off, eventually resulting in one of the longestrunning shows (3,388 perfs.) in Broadway history. And the 1978 Grease movie became the highest-grossing motion picture musical of all time (a record that still stands today). Originally an actor, Jacobs has appeared on television, in motion pictures, regional theater, national tours and on Broadway. He is the co-author of several other plays and musical comedies including Island of Lost Coeds, a musical spoof of the low budget sci-fi/horror/jungle movies of the 1950s which he wrote with his Grease collaborator, the late Warren Casey. WARREN CASEY (Book, Music and Lyrics) was born in Yonkers, New York and attended Syracuse University. During the late ’50s, he learned all about “greasers” while working as a high school art teacher in upstate New York. He moved to Chicago in 1962, where he hoped to pursue an acting career and appeared in dozens of productions, including creating the role of Bernie Litko in David Mamet’s Sexual Perversity in Chicago. He supported himself with jobs in retail, including working as an assistant manager of a chain of apparel stores and as a record salesman. As a hobby, he taught himself how to play the guitar and began writing songs mostly for the amusement of his friends. Mr. Casey acted with the Chicago Stage Guild (where he met Jim Jacobs), the Old Town Players and the Kingston Mines Theatre. The latter company staged the original production of Grease, which he co-wrote with Jim Jacobs. After the incredible success

PAUL NICHOLAS (Producer) is one of the U.K.’s leading actors. His theatrical career began in 1969 as Claude in Tom O’Horgan’s original London production of Hair. He created the roles of Jesus and Danny in the original London productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and Grease and was invited by Andrew Lloyd Webber to take part in the original workshop of Cats and originate the part of Rum Tum Tugger. His venture into pop singing gave him numerous U.K. hits as well as a top five on the Billboard Top 100 with Heaven on the Seventh Floor. Paul became a household name with his role as Vince in the BBC television series “Just Good Friends.” In 1992 he formed a production company with David Ian, and they have been responsible for several productions including Jesus Christ Superstar, The Rocky Horror Show, Chess, Evita, Singin’ in the Rain, Saturday Night Fever, Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Grease. Paul was the acting coach on the U.K. search for Danny and Sandy in “Grease Is the Word” produced by Simon Cowell. Mr. Manos has been in Atlanta for more than 40 years. He has produced over 700 works of theater, ballet and opera. He has been recognized with numerous civic awards, including the Atlanta Critics Award for the development of the art of theater in Atlanta and the Governor’s Award in the Arts. He has been instrumental in the creation of such organizations as the Winter Play Season, Grand Opera in the Park, Just Us Theater Company and the Fall Film Festival – just to name a few! During the early months of the Woodruff Arts Center, Mr. Manos was responsible for 12 productions of theater, ballet and opera in that facility. Mr. Manos is a member of the Broadway League, the Independent Presenters Network and the National Alliance of Musical Theatre Producers. In 1999, Mr. Manos received the Coca-Cola Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award from the Arts & Business Council of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. In 2005, Mr. Manos was the first recipient of the GAELA Award presented by the Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts. In 2007, Mr. Manos was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Broadway League. Mr. Manos was married for 45 years to the late Glenn Ryman Manos. He has two sons, Chris Jr. and Nick, a daughter, Ann, and is the very proud grandfather of seven grandsons and four granddaughters.

Mr. Manos is a graduate of the Westminster Schools in Atlanta and the University of North Carolina. His business career spans two decades in sales management with a multi-national employee benefits company. In the fall of 2000, he returned to Atlanta to become the managing director of Theater of the Stars. In 2008, he assumed the role of president. Since 2000, Mr. Manos has been heavily involved with the touring aspect of the company and has been the driving force behind many of the artistic and cultural marvels brought to the Theater of the Stars stage, including Disney's High School Musical, the coproductions of Deaf West’s Big River, The King And I with Sandy Duncan, and Bombay Dreams. Mr. Manos is the founder of the Junior Theatre Festival, an event that takes place every January in Atlanta, and brings drama students from all over the world together to perform, learn and celebrate theater. Mr. Manos has served on the boards of the Houston Grand Opera and Theatre Under The Stars in Houston. He and his wife Laura have three children, Andy, Kate and Sam, and one dog, Peach.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION The Theatre A fully restored 1929 “Movie Palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,678 seats, is a multiple-purpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballet, symphonies, concerts, movies, and private corporate events. Private Rooms The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, with accommodations for 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The brand new Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. All rooms include the Fox Theatre’s professional sales and coordination staff. To book your ”Fabulous Fox“ evening, please call 404.881.2100 or visit us at www.foxtheatre.org. The Box Office The Fox Theatre Box Office is located in the arcade entrance to the theater. The Box Office is open for walk up ticket sales Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., and Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Fox Theatre Box Office is not open on Sundays unless there is a performance. During Events, the Box Office opens two hours prior to show time. Doors to the Fox open one hour prior to show time. Tickets for all performances at the Fox may be purchased at any TICKETMASTER outlet, by calling TICKETMASTER at 404.817.8700 or 404.249.6400, or by visiting the Fox Theatre Box Office in person during regular Box Office hours. You may purchase tickets for a particular nights performance that night only until 8pm at the box office. Concessions Concession stands are located in the Spanish Room, adjacent to the main lobby, and on the mezzanine lobby level. Restrooms Restrooms are located on the main lobby and mezzanine lobby levels. Restrooms are also located on the Gallery level. Restrooms for patrons who are physically challenged are located in the Spanish Room. Gift Shop The Fox Theatre operates a gift shop selling history books, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and an assortment of other theaterrelated merchandise. The gift shop is located in the main lobby and is open at each performance. Tours Tours of the Fox Theatre are available through the Atlanta Preservation Center. Tours are conducted Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Tours begin in the Peachtree Street Arcade entrance to the theater. Smoking In accordance with the Fulton County Clean Air Ordinance, the Fox Theatre is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas. Special Needs Ken Shook, Patron Services Director, is our liaison to the disabled community. He can be reached at 404.881.2118 and can provide information on such topics as the locations and prices of accessible seating and other programs for the disabled. The Fox Theatre also has a new brochure detailing all of these programs for our patrons with special needs. They are available at the Guest Relations Table. Fox Ambassadors are located at the Guest Relations Table in the main lobby at the Fox Theatre Merchandise Kiosk to offer their assistance, theater information, and several rental items to enhance your performance enjoyment. An audio clarification device (Phonic Ear) is available for patrons with hearing disabilities. It is available, free of charge, on a first-come, first-serve basis on the evening of a performance, or you may reserve a device by calling the Patron Services Director. A limited number of booster seats are also available free of charge. Binoculars are available for sale. All items require a form of identification to be held until the item is returned. Elevators Elevators are located at the north end of each lobby. The elevators are available during all performances and make it possible to access each lobby without the use of stairs. Parking Parking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Box Office or by calling TICKETMASTER at 404.817.8700. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned parking lots operating in the Fox Theatre district. Performance Notes All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to the Theatre. Please be aware that not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management, in conjunction with the wishes of the producers. Please turn off all pagers and cell phones prior to the beginning of each performance. Please limit conversation during the performances. Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited.

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. That experience inspired him to make Dora a bilingual Latina heroine, which has had a huge cultural impact. Dora’s popularity introduced new generations to the richness of Latino culture and has made it a part of American pop culture.

O
h what I’d give to be able to hop a flight and land at Sprinkles Beverly Hills. I’ll save Rodeo Drive for later visits; I’d rather splurge on delectable goodies. An assortment of mouth-watering cupcakes is just what a girl (or anyone) needs to get over life’s ho-hum moments. Whether you like them as an occasional treat or as a mid-day sugar fix, they always hit the sweet spot. Now that cupcakes are all the rage, bakeries specializing in the trend are popping up everywhere, especially in Atlanta. So, I set out on a citywide hunt to find the best ones. In my quest, I learned a few truths: A cupcake is only as good as its ingredients; you can’t judge a cupcake by its frosting; and I’ll gladly walk in the rain sans-umbrella when

there’s an edible reward attached to it. (Don’t judge me. People do crazy things when under the influence of sugar.) My first stop was a warehouse a few turns off of Howell Mill Road. If I weren’t hungry, I’d think I was in the wrong place, but the signs clearly read Metrotainment Bakery. Since I didn’t pre-order, the pickings were slim. Not quite what I was expecting, just the basics: chocolate, vanilla, red velvet … the usual. The cashier recommended the carrot cake cupcake, but I opted for German chocolate instead. Mari’s Sweets’ 24 Karat cupcakes
I’ll go with the pina colada or peanut butter and jelly ones ($2.25). Bellystore. com or 404-872-1003. At times I struggle with instant gratification, and this happened to be one of those times. But since Mari’s Sweets is a virtual (delivery only) bakeshop, patience was necessary. I browsed the selections online, and with such yummy names as Sweet Georgia Brown (pumpkin), Sweet Almond Crème and Spiced Lemon Ginger-Twist, I imagine this place to be like heaven. I decide on the 24 Karat cupcakes (carrot cake with orange-infused frosting topped with pecans) and hope for the best. Indeed, I’m impressed and I fall in love at first bite. While I’d like to say I’ve found the ultimate cupcake, the verdict is still out; several of the cupcakeries on my list were closed for baking (sweet-pockets.com, buttersweetbakery.com and littlecakebakery.com). So, I’ll leave the choice to you. After all, it’s best I start my next adventure: pursuit of the perfect treadmill.

There were quite a few flavors of jumbo-sized cupcakes ($3.95) to choose from. And, I was pleased to find out they came in minis ($.95) also. That meant I could sample the coconut, chocolate peanut butter gnache, red velvet and carrot. And sample I did. I can’t say I was smitten, but my taste buds weren’t complaining either. On my way over, the cloudy sky finally turned to rain, but I wasn’t about to let that stop me. Rather than giving the weather time to die down, I parked my car (there’s only street parking) and walked down the block without an umbrella. I’ve been known to do some questionable things in the name of food, but this took the cake. Literally. The sweet smell of calories beckoned me through the door, and I quickly forgot all about my trek. After scanning the long counter, I found what I was looking for. Not the most attractive I’ve seen, but a cupcake is a cupcake, right? I was about to find out. I pointed out a red velvet one, only to later find out it wasn’t red at all, more like an amberhued brown. Why didn’t they just call this chocolate? I fight disappointment and bite into it. I’m thankful for my “hybrid cupcake,” but next time I think
