Between Us
Who is this play for?
There’s an unfortunate assumption that work for young audiences and families needn’t aspire to the same artistic heights as work for grown folks. Or that the material should somehow lower itself to the age level of the audience. Or that young audiences and adults couldn’t possibly be moved by the same artistic experience.
Bina’s Six Apples beautifully upends each of these assumptions.
Lloyd Suh has written a play for the ages. All ages. One that neither condescends nor presumes but rather reveals fundamental truths about the human experience. One that speaks to families across seemingly insurmountable generational divides. And that was by design, for Lloyd mined his own family lore to create a story that could speak both to his father and to his children. He wrote it for them. But in so doing, he crafted a play that generously invites all of us — no matter our age or level of experience in this world — to participate in Bina’s courageous journey.
This play takes its inspiration from Lloyd’s father’s experience during the Korean War and takes place during that period of unfathomable and senseless tragedy. When the circumstances of the world no longer make sense, we rely on stories to be our guides. Mere facts and figures can’t fully hold the truth we’re seeking. Lloyd Suh has created a parable of resilience that has much to reveal about what truly matters as we journey through a fragmented world.
So thank you, Lloyd Suh, for sharing your story with all of us and for encouraging us to hope no matter the odds.
And a special thanks to all of you for venturing back to the theater to seek out those truths that you find in stories exquisitely told. So, a long-winded answer to my original question: This play is for you!
