Southwest Arts Center “Blues is the roots, everything else is the fruits.” So proclaimed Willie Dixon, blues composer, famed recording-session maestro, bass man, and an early bridge between the blues and rock ‘n’ roll.
This thought is brought to life in the untold story of Paramount Records, Chasin’ Dem Blues. This roof-raising show is a foot-stomping, multi-media musical celebration, which thrills audiences with storytellers’ accounts of how a small Midwest town changed the landscape of American music, and ushered in the sound of the early 20th century, a sound that still reverberates today.

History is a funny thing. Twenty years ago, Kenny Leon, the very smart artistic director of the Alliance Theatre, asked his friend Pearl Cleage to write a play. She’d previously written the wildly successful Flyin’ West, and he wanted another one. What he got, what Atlanta got, and what the American theatre got, was a play called Blues for an Alabama Sky — that since its world premiere in 1995, has been an annual and popular production choice for professional theatres and universities across this country. Flash forward. That same smart artistic director, having invited me a time or four to come direct at the Alliance, decided to move on. And while I was determined to pave my own path, I was also — thankfully — wise enough to pay attention to some of the profound investments Kenny had made in art and artists. And I was lucky enough to come to know Pearl Cleage. Flash forward a little further, and that relationship has become a deep and generative one, with Pearl as a treasured member of the Alliance family as our resident playwright. And lucky me again, she has also become a frequent and beloved collaborator with whom I have been blessed to twice partner as director on her newest works — What I Learned in Paris and The Nacirema Society. And then we’re here. 2015. And with the blessing of her original director, Pearl and I are making a new Blues for an Alabama Sky. The words — the beautiful words — are the same. The vivid and heart-rending characters and their complicated relationships with one another are the same. But the particular alchemy of writer, director, cast and designers is new. And the times, well, they have a-changed. But here’s the thing. The play is evergreen. Love is love, hope is hope, and dreams are as desperately needed and dangerously elusive as they ever were. Welcome to history. Welcome to right now. Welcome to Blues for an Alabama Sky.

‘Blues’ brings playwright, leading lady back to the future By Julie Bookman

Harlem Renaissance artist Archibald Motley Jr. (1891-1981) never lived in Harlem. In fact, the New Orleans-born African-American painter spent most of his life in Chicago, as part of that community’s affluent and elite. Heavily influenced by the jazz culture, Motley’s works depicted a vivid, urban black culture that bore little resemblance to the conventional and marginalizing rustic images of black Southerners so popular in the cultural eye. He was the first African-American artist to have a one-man exhibit in New York City; there he sold 22 out of 26 paintings. The piece pictured here is titled “Saturday Night.”

don’t get that many in life. Wedo-overs
For playwright Pearl Cleage and actor Crystal Fox, Blues for an Alabama Sky represents a delicious redo, some 20 years after each had her first go-round with the Harlem-set drama. When Cleage learned that the Alliance Theatre wanted to mount a 20th-anniversary production of her five-character 1995 play, she was surprised that two decades had passed. Blues, set at the beginning of the Great Depression, has been staged elsewhere every year since its Atlanta premiere, but Cleage hasn’t been involved. When she did revisit her script, she decided it “is still very much relevant to the times we live in.” For the Alliance premiere in 1995, Phylicia Rashad played the leading role of Angel Allen, a down-on-her-luck nightclub singer. Kenny Leon directed here and in Boston, again with Rashad as Angel. A relatively unknown Atlanta actor named Crystal Fox, barely 30 and handpicked by Rashad, was the understudy.
14 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
“Phylicia knew [Fox] was too young for Angel,” Cleage recalls, but she said Crystal had all the right qualities for the role and would be able to play it later. Later has arrived. Fox and Cleage “were like kids jumping up and down” when offered the chance to revisit Blues, says Fox. “Pearl was so curious to know why the play meant so much to me. I’m just so excited to be able to do it with her. I feel that with her in the room [for part of the rehearsal process], anything I want to try, I can check in with the mother of this fine play and see if it will work.” At the moment, Fox is earning widespread acclaim playing Hanna, the soulful but always worried and stressed-out maid on Tyler Perry’s soapy TV drama “The Haves and the Have Nots.” Tyler Perry Studios and the Alliance reportedly had to “move mountains” to free Fox for Blues. “The chance to play Angel was too good to pass up,” Fox says. When asked about the one time she performed the role, she recalls thinking, “Oh my God, what big shoes I have

to try and fill” and how much she didn’t want to let Rashad, Cleage, Angel or herself down. Angel is misguided and more than a little disappointed, deceptive and desperate. She has nothing in common with the no-nonsense Hanna that Fox plays on television. “They are polar opposites — at this moment in their lives,” Fox says. “That’s why I’m excited to play them both. I want audiences to know I’m more diverse than any one character, that I have more dimensions to explore.” Angel has not yet “hit bottom enough to need to call on something or someone higher than herself,” Fox says. Hanna, in contrast, is full of regrets and has learned tough life lessons the hard way. Angel may be at the center of Blues for an Alabama Sky, but Cleage gives ample weight to the journeys of the four other characters: Guy, an optimistic costume designer whom Cleage calls “an unapologetic gay man in an undeniably homophobic environment”; Delia, the neighbor who wants to start a family-planning clinic decades before it was acceptable; Sam, a Harlem doctor also ahead of his time; and Leland, a
conservative Southerner, a newcomer who can hardly relate to the lives of those around him. Although not the play’s focus, Leland was Cleage’s inspiration for the play and its title. She recalls clearly one winter night in 1994, when she and husband Zaron Burnett Jr. were driving back to Atlanta from Montgomery, where Alabama Shakespeare Festival was staging her Flyin’ West. As they drove, Cleage noticed “the sort of sky you never see if you’re in a big city.” She stuck her head out the window for a better view and imagined what it might be like for someone who belonged to that sky to visit a place like New York City. From there, the play took root. This time, Alliance artistic director Susan V. Booth directs. Cleage calls Booth “a playwright’s director, because she so honors the script. She is thorough in her investigation of who these characters are and where they are in time and space. I cannot wait to see what she will do with this play. “This is a wonderful thing for me to celebrate. It’s a full circle kind of journey.”

Twenty Happy Years of
Blues by

Pearl Cleage
hen Susan Booth first told me she wanted to direct a 20th anniversary production of Blues for an Alabama Sky, my first thought was: Twenty years? Did she say 20 years? I couldn’t believe it had been 20 years since the play premiered at the Alliance in 1995, but she was right. The play was commissioned by Kenny Leon, then Alliance artistic director, and it opened to a packed house on what is now the Hertz Stage. The setting was so intimate, and the audience’s response so genuine and immediate, that when an actress playing a drunk scene gave a little stumble, the whole front row reached out to catch her. It was a playwright’s perfect moment, and the beginning of an amazing journey. I am proud to say that since that premiere, there has not been a single year when the play did not receive multiple professional productions across the country. Equally satisfying to me is the fact that a generation of young actors introduce themselves to me by identifying the characters they played in their campus productions of Blues.

Susan’s invitation brought with it a flood of memories from that first production. I remembered when Phylicia Rashad, my former classmate from Howard University, fresh from her 10-year run as iconic TV mom Claire Huxtable, took on the role of Angel Allen as she reclaimed her place as a stage actress of depth and grace. I remembered a young actress who was handpicked to understudy Ms. Rashad after being spotted in the Alliance production of From the Mississippi Delta. That young understudy was Crystal Fox, who comes back for this production featured in the role she first explored 20 years ago and only two years after giving Alliance audiences the great gift of her performance in What I Learned in Paris. Also returning to the Blues cast is Tyrone Mitchell Henderson as Guy, whose real-life friendship with Crystal began during that first production, and whose epic struggle with a stubborn champagne cork during one memorable show still stands as a model of how to keep your head when props rebel! I also remembered a story that Susan had told me during rehearsals for The Nacirema
ALBERT TROTMAN
Playwright Pearl Cleage
Society about her first experience of Blues when it was produced at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. On the staff there at the time, Susan sat in rehearsals and realized she was watching a play that was both deeply rooted in the specific African-American story it was telling and reflective of our shared national narrative of big dreamers, passionate reformers and broken-hearted romantics. Night after night, she watched diverse audiences embrace and experience the play as if the story was their own. She decided that one day, she wanted to direct that play. It took me about two seconds to decide that’s what I wanted, too. So now we come full circle to a production that allows Susan to discover the play as a director for the first time. For the cast, it is a chance to
make this play and this production their own. For Alliance audiences, it is an opportunity to celebrate a great American play that started right here in our own backyard. And for the playwright, it is a time to say thank you for being part of this incredible journey and for giving me a place to tell the stories of our lives. I am more grateful than I can ever say for the gift of a life in the theatre. And now, let the good times roll!

discover us. discover you. discover us. discover you. In Blues for an Alabama Sky I discovered a timeless and thoughtprovoking reflection on the state of African-American life and culture that feels as relevant and vital as it was when it was first produced 20 years ago. I found the richly layered characters grappling with issues of race, class and gender that many artists still struggle with today. Poignant and surprising, it’s a story that will stick with me for years to come. Angela Burt-Murray Co-founder of Cocoa Media Group and former editor-in-chief of Essence
synopsis It is the summer of 1930. Harlem. The creative euphoria of the Renaissance has given way to the harsher realities of the Great Depression. Young Rev. Adam Clayton Powell is feeding the hungry and preaching an activist gospel at Abyssinian Baptist Church. Black Nationalist visionary Marcus Garvey has been discredited and deported. Birth-control pioneer Margaret Sanger is opening a new family planning clinic on 126th Street, and the doctors at Harlem Hospital are scrambling to care for a population whose most deadly disease is poverty. But far from Harlem, African-American expatriate extraordinaire Josephine Baker sips champagne in her dressing room at The Folies Bergère and laughs like a free woman.

about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre has become the leading producing theatre in the Southeast, creating the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse people. The Alliance values excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. Reaching more than 200,000 patrons annually, the Alliance delivers powerful programming that challenges adult and youth audiences to think critically and care deeply. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, the Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance Theatre, in 2007, received the Regional Theatre Tony Award in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 80 original productions including Tony Award winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice, and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. The Alliance has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act: The Musical; Come Fly Away; Bring It On: The Musical; Stephen King and John Mellencamp’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; the American premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings; Harmony: A New Musical by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman; and, most recently, Bull Durham and Tuck Everlasting. The Alliance also nurtures the careers of playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing a premiere for the competition winner as part of the regular season, and the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, providing developmental support and production resources for three performing arts projects each year. The work produced by the Alliance gives locally based artists the chance to create on a nationally watched stage, building and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Each year the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department reaches close to 50,000 students through performances, acting classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives. The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level, from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to the groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance also offers community education classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest, and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development, working with local and national playwrights. An active participant in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatrical techniques to aid in student learning through storytelling and problem-solving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K–2nd grade, and Dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Twice recognized by the U.S. Education Department as leaders in arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access.

Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance Children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher Corps. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact Shana Orr at 404.733.4761 or shana.orr@woodruffcenter.org.

Tumors have nowhere to hide Patients now have somewhere to turn The future of cancer treatment is here. And it’s only available at WellStar. WellStar is the only health system in metro Atlanta to offer TomoTherapy® and CyberKnife® for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.
TomoTherapy
CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System
Unlike conventional systems, which allow radiation to be delivered from only a few directions, TomoTherapy rotates in 360 degrees, meaning that treatments can be delivered continuously to the tumor from every angle. More beam directions give physicians more control in how they plan treatments – and more assurance that the dose will be confined to the tumor.
The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System involves no cutting, and for many, can offer a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of tumors. The system is composed of a radiation delivery device, which is mounted on a flexible robotic arm which enables CyberKnife to deliver radiation to tumors anywhere in the body. Its exceptional tracking ability eliminates the need for patients to have stabilizing head frames or limited breathing during treatment.
