between us

I love baseball. For the better part of the 1990s, I spent many of my summer Sundays at Wrigley Field rooting for the (usually dismally losing) Cubs. I loved everything about the ritual — the raucous bleacher bums, the beerflavored water that passed for ballpark brew, and the sun-dazed sense of community we all formed in those stands. And while I’m older and ostensibly wiser now, I have happily replicated that same experience at Turner Field a time or 30. Here’s the thing. Much like theatre and love, baseball requires a willing suspension of disbelief. Think about it. If you let go of the stats, the standings and the losing streaks, then hope can spring eternal in those stands. You can believe in something that connects you with those around you in a kind of optimistic pact that makes you glad to be alive. I don’t think I fully understood the resonance of that metaphor until a genius guy named Ron Shelton wrote a story called Bull Durham. That story gave me a fierce new heroine who worshipped at the church of baseball with a zest for life that inspired not only those Sundays at Wrigley Field, but those willing suspensions I made in the theatre and in love. So thank you, Annie. So thank you, Ron. And thank you to each player on this gobsmackingly talented team of artists who have brought our love affair with baseball to roaring life on the Alliance Stage. In the words of the immortal Harry Caray, it might be … it could be… IT IS A HOMERUN!!!

PLAY BALL! For its creators, moving Bull Durham from screen to stage was ‘pure joy’

You steal bases in baseball, and also in songwriting. Composer Susan Werner admits that she has stolen freely from Ron Shelton, who wrote the 1988 movie on which the world premiere musical Bull Durham is based. She also admits she “about fell out of my chair” when asked to join the project. “By stealing from Ron’s dialogue and his monologues, I have benefited so much,” Werner says. “I’ve just been lifting his words

because they are so beautiful and so real.” For example, in Shelton’s film script, Annie Savoy has the line, “Every woman deserves to wear white.” That became the title of a song, Werner says, “but that’s all Ron. The bells go off in your head, and you realize you can build four to five minutes around that great line.” Shelton drew on his own experiences in the minor leagues to write and direct the iconic 1988 baseball movie featuring Susan

Left: RON SHELTON, ballplayer, filmmaker — and now theater artist — Ron Shelton played minorleague baseball from 1967 to 1971, mostly at shortstop and second base for clubs in Rochester, N.Y., Bluefield, W.Va., and Stockton, Calif. He still remembers his salary: $500 a month for Single-A ball (plus $3 a day for meals) and $900 a month for Triple-A ball ($7.50 a day for meals). A 1972 strike that canceled spring training led to the end of his baseball career. He went back to school to study painting and sculpture, and a much more lucrative film career followed.

Sarandon, Kevin Costner and Tim Robbins as the sultry Annie and ballplayers “Crash” Davis and Ebby Calvin “Nuke” Laloosh. “She just gets it,” Shelton says of Werner. “She came right off the farm in the Midwest, so she has the dirt under her nails like a ballplayer, and also a sense of the sexiness that was required.” For the record, Werner was raised in rural Iowa and studied classical voice at Temple University in Philadelphia. Shelton describes Werner’s score as sexy, earthy, fresh, funny and smart, with melodies that linger in your mind. “If you were to pull the bus into a roadhouse somewhere in the South in the late 1980s, this is the kind of country-fried music you might hear coming from that roadhouse.” Werner says the score “lives at the intersection of sports and sex.” Like baseball players, Werner has her superstitions. She played softball in a junior league when young and while working on Bull Durham kept her childhood catcher’s mitt at her feet. “I so believe in good juju,” she says. “That old glove of mine was less than 5 feet away from me the whole time I was writing these songs.” The idea of turning Bull Durham into a musical had been tossed

Bulll Durham composer Susan Werner knows her stuff. The All Music Guide says she is “...a songwriter and musician who is in such complete command of her gifts that it’s almost scary.” The Chicago Tribune classified her as “one of the most innovative songwriters working today.”

around for a decade, says Shelton, who always saw the story “as a very musical movie.” He’s been involved in scores for his previous movies, too, including the sports-themed White Men Can’t Jump (1992) and Tin Cup (1996). To turn Bull Durham into a musical, Shelton studied musicals he admired, from Larry Gelbart’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

the Forum (1962) to Arthur Laurents’ Gypsy (1959), calling Gypsy “as pure a piece of storytelling as you will ever find in the musical theater.” Werner agrees. Gypsy became “sort of a model for us because it’s a great piece of architecture. It holds up so well as these great characters grow and change and challenge each other. It’s tuneful, immediate, easy to follow — and at the same time so impactful.” Both author and composer describe the creative process as “pure joy,” for them and the team that includes director Kip Fagan and producers Laura Stanczyk and Jack Viertel. The gang got together a few times in New York, but much of the work was done via email, Skype and by sharing MP3 files of songs in progress. The musical borrows generously from the movie, but some entirely new scenes have been written. Shelton decided his movie, for example, didn’t need a speech in which Annie, Durham’s “‘high priestess’ of baseball,” explains her passion for the game. For the musical? It became the basis for a song. “I really like the fact that you can be less literal and linear in storytelling

for theater,” Shelton says. “A bedroom can turn into a ballgame can turn into a bus. It didn’t have to be real — it just had to be dramatically real.” Now Shelton wants audiences to “just forget about the film. We’re not trying to remake the movie. This is an entirely new life for the story and these characters.”

As far as any baseball movie is concerned, I think Bull Durham would be in the top five for most baseball fans.” “The last trip we took to Durham, my wife and I got a chance to see the old stadium. The gate was open, so we kind of snuck in and got to walk around where they filmed the movie.” “Some of the bus trips remind me of our daily rigors at the Triple-A level. Some of the bus scenes that they showed definitely emulate the minor league travel. And of course, the minor league veterans like “Crash” Davis, who have been around for a while and being a good clubhouse guy, also remind you of players you run into at this level.” Sean Kazmar Shortstop, Gwinnett Braves

SYNOPSIS

Bull Durham began life as a 1988 movie directed and written by Ron Shelton, who had spent some of his formative years as a minor league infielder. Shelton wanted to write about what was most important about that experience, which was graduating from it. While still young, he got too old for the game; it was time to become a real adult. And he decided to tell that story largely from a woman’s point of view. Annie Savoy, who every season takes one minor leaguer under her wing and into her bed, has been the “high priestess of the Durham Bulls” for more than a decade, with no end in sight. Crash Davis is a 38 year-old lifetime minor leaguer who is sent to Durham to tutor a wild and wildly talented young pitcher named Ebby Calvin “Nuke” Laloosh. For Annie, the choice isn’t clear – does she want the veteran or the “phenom?” For Crash, it’s a last chance to try to work his way up to the majors before his career expires. And for Nuke, it’s just a matter of growing up enough to play in the bigs. In the course of Bull Durham all three of them are taken by surprise as they interact, push each other’s buttons and learn things they didn’t know they needed to learn. And by the story’s conclusion, Annie and Crash have found their way to a new definition of what it means to join the major leagues.

The Alliance has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring, and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act: The Musical, Come Fly Away, Bring It On: The Musical, Stephen King and John Mellencamp’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, the American premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings, and most recently, Harmony – A New Musical by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman. The Alliance also nurtures the careers of playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing a premiere for the competition winner as part of the regular season, and the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, providing developmental support and production resources for three performing arts projects each year. The work produced by the Alliance allows locally based artists the chance to create on a nationally watched stage, building and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Each year the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department reaches close to 50,000 students through performances, acting classes, drama camps, and inschool initiatives. The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level, from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to the ground breaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance also offers community education classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development, working with local and national playwrights. An active participant in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatrical techniques to aid in student learning through storytelling and problem solving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards, and increase student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K – 2nd Grade, and Dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Twice recognized by the U.S. Education Department as leaders in arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to city wide arts access. The Alliance delivers the finest talent, art and educational opportunities for Atlanta audiences—proving once again that the Alliance is where great theatre lives. alliancetheatre.org or 404.733.4650
